Hi,

Again me :)

This time:

- How can I trim the lenght of the excerpt of the post? - What is the best way to translate themes language strings?

Hi Tane!

1. Localization: This theme is ready for translation but still require you to actually do the translating (either manually or though a plugin) as I don’t speak any language other than English.

What does this mean? It essentially means that the theme has been coded so that it’s ready to accept mult-language translation without you needing to sift through the code. It’s “internationalized”, if you want to use WordPress developer’s lingo.

For true translations into native languages, I recommend the “Code Style Localization” Plugin, which is available for free in the WordPress plugins directory. Find more details and instructions on how to create the translations here: http://www.code-styling.de/english/development/wordpress-plugin-codestyling-localization-en

Essentially, you’ll need to create a custom .PO file with the plugin, fill in your translations for each text string used in the theme, then use the plugin to create a .MO file that will be used for the theme. If you’ve done a lot of translations in the past, you’ll know you also may need to do this for each involved plugin.

2. What pages are you looking to trim on? There’s a couple different excerpt functions running so I need to point ya to the right now. Likely it’s either “use the more tag” or trim the number in functions.php in the custom excerpt section :)

Hi B,

I hope this will be my last one!

How can I center the social icons on the top hat?

; )

Heya Pencil! That ones a bit trickier… are you also removing the text on the left side? It’ll factor into how I tell ya to address this, but either way it’ll take a bit of editing on the code-side because it requires some changes to the layout. Right now that top hat area is coded into two columns, when, for centering, you need just one. B

Thanks! I think I’ll leave it as it is. Can the navigation bar be customized ? I’ve used firebug to see code , but can’t find what files they’re in (this is definitely the last question)

You get 5++ star in customer service!

MDNW

Thanks and sure! What precisely did ya want to customize though? Keep in mind there’s a ”:hover” selector on Firebug that’s useful for spotting just the hover styles… anyways, fire away with any specific ideas/questions. It’ll either be a CSS patch, element-navigation.php or the functions.php Walker function that sets up the navigation.

Hey Brandon, great theme – I own most of yours!

I still suck at WP though – I’m trying upload portfolio items onto my homepage http://houstonlacrossecamps.com/

For some reason I can’t get it to work – I’m also having trouble getting images into your sliders? It’s weird because I’ve been successful in both of these things on your other themes. Is there an ideal size?

Thanks for any help, Turner

Heya Turner!

Let’s start with the basic rundown for that page template just to be safe:

1. Create a page – assign the portfolio template – pick a few category filters. 2. Make sure that there are posts using those categories and that each post has a featured image assigned.

For the slider – this theme is slightly different. We’re still using the same basic idea for the frontpage slider where you can upload slides from the Theme Options panel and then “insert” the frontpage slider on any other page… but the new addition in this theme is the “page slider” that grabs all images associated with a page or post and drop them into the carousel. The trick here is uploading images directly to that post or page and not to the generic media library.

Let me know if that helps – you can also file a ticket at http://makedesign.ticksy.com and I’ll be glad to help out over there (it’s a great way to share a temporary login with me so I can take a peek inside and see what’s up). I appreciate the feedback though – especially in these early rounds as it helps me refine the documentation and wording so there’s the least amount of confusion :)

Thanks for picking up the themes btw! Hope you like them!

Cheers! B

Hi B,

I’d like to change the grey gradient effect on the navigation bar (when it scales down to mobile size it turns to this color). I would just like it to be plain white if possible (with the black outline)

Try this out in your Theme Options > Styling Options > Custom CSS field::

.sf-menu > li:hover {
    background: none repeat scroll 0 0 rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.0);
    box-shadow: 0 0px 0px rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.0) inset;
}

“Heya tane! Have you setup an account at http://gravatar.com yet?”

Of course! That helped, thx.

Then still another issue. It seems (at least for me) that the search results are breaking the theme a bit.

Loving the theme!

MDNW

Heya Tane! What’s the issue with the search results again? I have a small update coming today or tomorrow (1.9.3), but I’ll make sure to add any search fixes to the list if you can help spot them :) B

Nope that doesn’t work. It’s still grey/graient. E

MDNW

Ok so let’s maybe clarify what you’re trying to change… any chance you have a screenshot or something? I suspect I’m providing a patch for the wrong element ;) B

Nope that doesn’t work. It’s still grey/gradient. E

i’m interested in purchasing the theme and was wondering if for the portfolio display on the homepage, if i have like 50 items to display, but only want to show 10 at a time, can i set the item display number to limit to 10 items and have an auto generated 1/5 >> at the bottom?

Thanks!

MDNW

Sure! The pagination would by default be a simple { << Previous Posts … Next Posts >> }, but you can absolutely set the post-count to 10 or whatever you’d like :) B

excellent, thank you very much for taking the time to respond : )

Hey Brandon,

Purchased the theme a few days ago and am busy customizing everything to our liking. Wanted to say it looks amazing. I’m a graphic/web design major and am very picky when it comes to our website. This one blew everything we saw out of the water. The responsiveness was the thing that sold us the most along with the amazing design.

Read through every comment to make sure I hadn’t seen a few of my questions. Found a couple but still had a couple.

1. I am wanting to change the height of the div that the logo lives in. I tried the custom css but its getting overridden by an element style of some sort. 2. Also want to change the height of the nav. 3. My twitter feed is giving me an error. Sometimes it will show but its been showing an error here lately. Thanks man.

Here’s the link to the dev site. http://www.spry-media.com/dev

Sure! It’ll be in the next update, till then use this in your Theme Options > Styling Options > Custom CSS field:

a.twitter-link div.tweet-thumb {
float: left;
margin: 0 8px 2px 0;
}

.tw-time{display: none;}

.sidebar-advert img {
    width: 43%;
}

.hybrid-blog-4 .aside, .hybrid-blog-3 .aside, .hybrid-blog-2 .aside {
    margin: 8px 0 5px;
}

Cheers! Brandon

Mortified about the multiple messages! :S

Here’s a link to the site (with screen shot), the navigation bar is still grey.

I’ll see if I can find the code somewhere : )

Hehe no worries :)

Oh! Maybe it’s just that silly Chosen dropdown script that’s bugging you – try turning that off from the Theme Options panel. I’m probably pulling it in the next update or two anyways as it causes more phone issues than it solves apparently ;)

B

I would be interested in hiding the author images (as a previous poster inquired). What is the “single line of text” you mentioned?

Also, there seems to be a large amount of space below the slider (or above the posts) on my front page. Where would I look to adjust this?

Thanks for your help, and for a great theme!

Ok…so one more question (hopefully). Is it possible to resize the width of the top hat and footer to match the rest of the content instead of stretching across the entire width of the screen?

MDNW
MDNW Author

Hi Life! Sure – you can do this with CSS – I actually have a skin coming out in the next version that accomplishes something like this – http://reason-boxed.makedesign.wpengine.com :) B

Heya B,

It’s been a little over a week since I lasted messaged you and I’ll unexpectedly have sometime to get acclimated with your theme this coming Fri / Sat. So, I wanted to get a status update.

Have you had a chance to deal with the “boxed” layout skin request yet or will you before this weekend? If not, no worries I’ll check back in again when I have the time. Your work queue is likely somewhat un-tameable. LOL .

Hopefully this message finds you doing well! :-)

MDNW
MDNW Author

You can always grab updates for free from the Downloads page here – or even better in this case though – I can just hand over the CSS snippet that I used to create the skin and you can copy/paste it into the CSS field for the theme options panel and you’ll be all set to go :) B

Default-user

I’m quite aware updates are free. Unless you’ve submitted an update that has yet to be approved, the download from Sunday didn’t appear to contain the new skin. The documentation would also appear to be un-searchable so helping myself was made somewhat difficult.

At this time, if I could request and actually get a refund (as a store credit / deposit) for Reason WP, I would do just that. However, I don’t see that as being possible / allowed since it was my fault for purchasing it. So I’m abandoning this theme, counting it as a loss, you no longer have to support me, etc. :-)

Heya Electro! The update should be going up today now that I’m back in the office – till then, drop this snippet into your Theme Options > Styling Options > Custom CSS field:

a.twitter-link div.tweet-thumb {
float: left;
margin: 0 8px 2px 0;
}

.tw-time{display: none;}

.sidebar-advert img {
    width: 43%;
}

ul.social li {opacity: 1;}

#section-tophat, #section-tophat:after,
#section-footer, #section-footer:after,
#section-sub-footer, #section-sub-footer:after{
background: none transparent !important;
border: 0 !important;
box-shadow: 0 0 0 !important;
}

#section-tophat, #section-tophat a,
#section-footer, #section-footer a,
#section-sub-footer, #section-sub-footer a{
color: white !important;
}

#tagline{padding: 2px 0 8px;}

#section-header .container {
    border-radius: 8px 8px 0 0;
}

#section-content .container {
    border-radius: 0 0 8px 8px;
}

Cheers! Brandon

Hi B,

Thanks! That worked….button is still grey though. Anyway of changing it to?

That’s actually controlled through your device’s default UI… so if you’re on a computer, the browser defines it (it’ll look different in IE than it does in Safari) – if you’re on a phone, the phone itself defines it. I’m not entirely sure if there are really stable ways of hacking around that default styling without hurting the usability of the dropdown selectors… Hope that explanation at least helps though! B

I’m really pleased with this theme, but I have one problem which I can’t figure out.

If I try to see just posts in a particular category, or with a particular tag, instead I see all posts. Text search works just fine, showing me just posts with the searched-for text. But categories and tags, nope, I see everything.

Can you suggest anything I can do to fix this? I’m a software developer myself, but not familiar enough with WP and PHP to see where it’s going wrong.

If you want to see how it behaves on my site, it’s here: http://narratorium.com .

Updated in your next post – I’ll follow through and check this out though! B

Hmmm, I just commented out a block of code in index.php, and it seems to have fixed it. Not sure what I’ve just broken, though!

It’s the code which starts <?php wp_reset_query();
