Does a user that just signed up need to get their account approved before they can start posting questions?

@armed – Everyone that signs up is allowed to post questions. There is an admin option (checkbox on the theme settings page) that allows an admin to prevent normal (non-expert or admin) users from posting answers to questions. You can also start asking a question when you are logged out and it asks you to either login or signup right from the ask-a-question page.

There are also moderation features built in to help to flag unwanted questions by the user community. You can manage these flagged items in the specific Manage Flagged Content Section.

Hi, I love this theme! Just what I am looking for. I have a few pre-sale questions however. 1 – Does it come with facebook/twitter log in feature? 2 – Is there an option to set a price to ask a question?

The first is the biggy for me. This is something I would need and if the theme cant provide I would need to do it myself.

Hi,

1.) Facebook and Twitter logins can be done via a plugin or if you know about the api and buttons you can get the code from those providers. It is not directly part of the theme. Just standard site registration at this point.

2.) There is currently no option for charging a price for asking questions. You would need to add in this function on your own.

Can we use blog feature, and can we make it pay per question by a plugin?

Hi,

1.) Currently the post/comments use the main post type. I guess you could create a new custom post type for a blog and then create a sub pages for a blog but there is no “blog” option built right in. Would require some coding.

2.) I am not familiar with a plugin off the top of my head that does this but that doesn’t mean that there isnt one out there. The only issue i would see is it pairing with the advanced functions built in this theme out of the box. My initial guess would be that this would be a custom code job to get this to work.

The only option currently to get this theme is to buy a version here on ThemeForest. There is no offering to try then buy. The price is very reasonable for the service it can provide.

You could easily have this work on any language and the translations process is an easy 1 step process.

Hi,

If i read your question right, you are asking to know if a user has to be logged in and registered to post a question?

If this is the question, the answer is yes they need to be a member of the site to store the info and make it possible to do queries build member pages and other functions. There is no easy way to make it so a user can post without being a member, Since it is a database you need to attribute the data and post to some kind of user.

I guess if you were to create a general user that everything posted to them ONLY you could have it post without login but again that is not part of this theme out of the box. You would have to code it this way on your own. There are many security reasons why you WANT to have members and associate things to them.

Hi thanks for answering my previous questions.

Could you add social integration for a price? All I would want is users to be able to sign in with facebook and twitter, and for the questions (or answers) to be auto posted to the respective social site that the user logged in with.

Is this something you could do? I really want to buy and get going with this, but I need the social elements mentioned above.

Hi,

I know you can install a plugin to get the social buttons and they usually supply you the code to copy and paste them anywhere on the site you want to have them.

Unfortunately at this time i don’t have the bandwidth to do this for you.

Looks like there are settings for posting to your facebook account.

The issue that i see is that it links to 1 account vs everyone posting to their wall’s when they add questions.

I think it is more of a 1 way post to a fan page or a profile of the account data that you have from FB.

I dont have any experience with connecting FB to wordpress but i am sure there are some plugins to get you there.

On the demo site the admin user is currently and expert: http://wordpressqa.com/robust-qa/profile/admin/

They get a star badge next to their name anywhere it shows up on the site. Also there is an admin menu that shows up that will allow you to assign and remove expert status to any member on the site. Being an expert allows you be answer questions on the site when the “experts and admins can only answer questions” feature is turned on.

If i read you question right, you are asking for a method for people to assign questions to and expert user? Currently built in you could do this:

1.) have the admin watch the unanswered tab on the site or create a bookmark to the page on the site: http://wordpressqa.com/robust-qa/unanswered-questions/

2.) There are admin alerts that you can setup for ANY question or ANY answer when they are posted to email you the addition so you can be aware of it. Both of these are checkboxes on the Theme Settings page.

I think this will suit your needs.

Looks really cool, especially on a mobile device!!

1.) Do you allow Sub-categories and how are they listed in the widgets area?

2.) Do you have a widget for a Pull-Down Categories list?

3.) How does the Leaderboard work.

a.) If I ask 5 questions and give 10 answers is my rating 15?
b.) If I ask 25 questions only is my rating 25?
c.) What if my answer is selected as the best answer, do I get any extra points?
d.) I noticed admin has a Gold star next to his rating is this something special?
e.) Does the questioner choose "best answer" or does it get selected automatically depending on the likes?
f.) In the demo version under the demoUser account I could not "Like" any of the answers, is this because I am in demo version?

Thanks for the questions:

1.) Sub-cats will only show up on the category pages in a separate box.

2.) Built into WP there is a widget that allows you to do a category drop-down list. All built in widgets are styled and ready to be used in the right-rail.

3.) Leader board works as a top down points leader board from all members of the site.

a. – c.) Points work like this:

1 Point for signing up 1 Point for asking a question 1 Point for answering a question that is not your own 2 Points if your answer is selected as Best Answer by the question giver

d.) On the demo site the admin user is currently marked as an Expert. This is what the badge means. This allows this user to get this badge anywhere on the site their name shows up and more importantly it allows admins and experts to answer questions only when that feature is turned on in the theme settings page. It is a checkbox. If checked it will only show the answer form to these two user types and all normal users will only have the option to ask more questions and they are messaged that experts can only answer.

There is a whole admin only management of these experts page from the admin my-account page, where you can see the current experts, select new users to become experts and remove expert status from current experts.

e.) The question giver will see links to select that answer as the best answer. They can change this at any point to a better answer if it comes along.

Answers are sorted on the page like this:

Best Answer – pinned to the top of the answers list with an indicator that it is the best answer: http://wordpressqa.com/robust-qa/hobbies/hobbies-for-quitters

Then after that comes any answers ordered by their like count.

f.) You need to be logged in to like something otherwise it will send you to the login page. But i pass through a redirect value so you will end back on the same page. I just did a few test to confirm that it was still working and it is working fine.

You can like questions and answers but not comments to answers.

Hi,

So i would recommend installing an instance of wp in a sub-folder of the site which would be this theme. Then linking to it from your main site.

As for the look and feel you have the options to change out the background with an image or a color, can change the logo in the header and other slight mods. As for pairing 1 for 1 with your existing site you could always start by editing the css if you wanted your menus to be blue etc.

I think that after looking at your existing site you could make it work without much work on your end. I tried to make it semi-agnostic to the user so that the could do this exact thing and not have too many over-designed items. More towards many trends that are happening with the web. Simple clean and long lasting items.

If you are using WP for both there are a few options:

You might want to look into Wordpress MU. I have not tested to see if this would work under that but basically you could share the users datbase which would allow those existing users to have instant access to the new site.

There are other ways to mod the new instance wp_users table to map over from the old site so it would get the similar site.

Again this is beyond the standard support and i would do some google searches on this since i know there are ways to do it.

Instant QA provides a 3 col design and simplified layout and is compatible with over versions of WP.

Robust is a new theme that works with 3.5.1+ There are translations for this theme, reporting content, experts, and much much more.

Hi, i’ve installed Robust QeA: i like it very much but i have some problems: - In order to avoid spam and low quality content, i need to moderate questions and answers before being published. Using the comments wp options, i set up the answers for being moderated before publishing, and it’s ok for me. Unfortunately, i can’t moderate questions, as they are directly published even if i choose the capability of CONTRIBUTOR as default

- i have a problem in the answers pagination: it seems not to receive the Enter/br command. This is what happens in my answers: if you write: word1
word2
word3
The result is: word1 word2 word3

Hi,

1.) You can do this pretty easy, in the functions.php page, there is a function to add_new_question that has a:

'post_status' => 'publish',

If you change this to be:

'post_status' => 'pending',

This should not allow them to publish to the site until you approve them.

You might want to change the success message for when a question is posted to let them know that it has been submitted and is under review until approved. Something like that.

2.) br tags should work as with these other ones for answers:

<b />, <a></a>, <i />, <u />, <p></p>, <br />

There is a php tag in there to remove extra whitespace and that might be what you are seeing happening when you just do an enter in the browser input box. You would need to modify the code to remove this function.

If you email me a login i will change this for you. Or i can talk you through how to modify it on your own.

In regards to your #2 question:

I was able to find an easy fix to this issue.

in comments.php file:

line 276 you will find this:
<p class="answer"><?php echo $comment->comment_content; ?></p>
change it to this:
<p class="answer"><?php comment_text(); ?></p>
This fix will be updated to the theme as soon as i can.

1. If I use single quote as in How’s, an escape character comes up as How\’s. How to fix this? 2. I don’t see anything in the dropdown to choose experts, the drop down is empty. 3. Is there a way to add a checkbox for I agree to the terms of the site on login screen?

1.) I will look into this, i wasn’t aware of this. 2.) How were your users created? Were they existing ones or were they new ones that were created with this theme? 3.) Yes this is possible but not done out of the box. You would need to add an input and check handler in the add_new_user function to check for this. If you know php you could mimic the efforts that i have done for some of the inputs. If not i can help you get this done if you email me via my profile.

2.) Since the users are not theme created, you will need to create a function to check for any users that don’t have any points yet and assign them with one.

5.) There are a couple ways to do this. You could create a cookie that is set when the user logs into the site that expires after 24 hours. If they dont have the cookie set then assign a new point to them upon login.

I have a quick fix for the quotes bug:

In functions.php there is a post_new_question function that has this line of code:

$question_content_stripped = strip_tags($question_data['content']);

Change it to be this:

$question_content_escaped = stripslashes($question_data['content']);
$question_content_stripped = strip_tags($question_content_escaped);

Great, glad i was able to help.

There is a function built into the theme that is run when a backend user is updated or created to make them seem like they were created by the theme. Adds 1 point, and some meta values for touch-points on the site. So my guess is that it was a new user created and triggered this function call. It will not affect users that already have at least 1 point.

I think this is what might have happened.

Quick question – Do you allow sub-categories?

I am currently generating a list of 5 categories and maybe about 50 sub-categories. How would the site handle this? How will they be displayed?

Yes sub-cats are shown on the category pages. In your case where there are a lot of sub-cats it might need a mod to the code to make them show up in a scrolling box vs what it does out the box which shows all of the at the top of the category page.

Hi,

I am trying to use the 1 click option to create pages. Unfortunately, when I click the button, nothing happens. The pages are not created and it looks like there is no processing happening.

I have tried in both Chrome and Firefox and the result is the same. What’s more I don’t see any documentation that explains what the pages are supposed to be.

I appreciate your help.

Update***

The problem was caused because the create page pop-up is triggered in the Theme Preview mode http://mysitename.com/wp-admin/customize.php

When I went to the front end, the same create page pop-up appeared and when I clicked the create page button on the front end, it worked and all pages were created.

It seems as though you might want to disable this pop-up in the Theme Customization screen (back-end) or have it be fully functional as it is on the front-end.

Hi, are you trying to do this from the theme preview page? If so WP blocks all clicks and actions on that page.

If you activate the theme and then visit the main page of your site you will be able to do the 1-click page create.

The site doesn’t know when it is being shown in an iframe or not. I could trigger it from another page i guess.

Yes I understand. I guess that many admins will head to the theme customization area in wordpress back-end, before they hit the front page. When the iframe pops-up, and then doesn’t fire an action it gives the impression that something is broken.

I didn’t notice any message that prompts me to go to the front end to use the create pages functions. I wonder if that would help.

Hi again,

When I activate your theme, the add new category function in wordpress stops working correctly. (i.e. add new category, but the category doesn’t appear in the list unless you refresh the whole page).

From Wordpress forums this seems to usually be associated with a some invalid code in the functions.php file but I can’t find the error.

Can you help? Has anyone else reported this problem?

I looked into it and it was add due to 1 whitespace char after the closing ?> in the functions.php file. Crazy that just adding that space would do that to the cats page. I will apply this update.

Do you mean the icon? THere is no easy way to do that at this point. What were you thinking of doing?

Oh good point. If you’re referring to the star icon, I’m okay with that. I don’t want to have the word “expert” appear anywhere on the site. If it does, I’d like to replace the label with another word.

Well i dont think that there is an expert value just the badge. But in the case you want to change wording vars on the site you can always do this via translations.php. This is so you dont have to start digging through the site to figure out what needs to be changed. It is all in one file.

Another challenge encountered:

I am not able to upload an avatar or get the Gravatar associated with my email to show up.

I browse to the file. Choose the desired image And click on Save Profile I get a message saying the profile has been updated but the avatar still shows the default silhouette.

I have the same issue when associating my gravatar. I click on the link go to the gravatar page, choose the image associated with my profile email and then save the profile.

In this case the default avatar is replaced by a blank white square.

Are you using a plugin like super cache? If you should dump your cache. This was all working fine on my end.

I’m really enjoying your theme so far. I notice that the menu displays on the front end in the opposite order of the back end.

So for example, on the menu admin page, I might create a custom main menu and add three menu items:

Apples Oranges Pears

On the front end, the menu order will appear as: Pears | Oranges | Apples

Small detail but it adds unnecessary confusion for the admin. I hope all this feedback is helpful.

That is due to the floating of the elements to the right to keep away from the categories drop-down list which is fixed.

You can just re-order them in the menu editor to be the way you want if they are showing up one way do it the other way.

Just the natural way floated li elements will show up.
