Discussion on Salutation Responsive WordPress + BuddyPress Theme

I have some inquiries, before a buy: 1 – when the theme is updated, i’ll get the new update with regular license? 2 – Are there language files Po. Mo.? 3 – What are the advantages of support available for my regular license? waiting ..

1. Yes, updates are free. The license does not change.

2. Yes, we include PO/MO files for the localizing the theme.

3. Not sure what you mean. We provide free support for all of our themes at our Help Center.

What is the font that the Salutation lol is done in?

I don’t remember. It’s in the help document and Photoshop file included.

Responsive or no responsive..I’m buying

But inquiring minds want to know – on the alternate home page layout under the “Our Clients” heading…can you replace this with a third party carousel plug-in?

Also thinking it would be nice if the sponsor links can point to the Buddy profile of the sponsor – I’m hoping to use the “Group” category as a “sponsor” category. Can this be done?

Yes, you should absolutely be able to do that. The example is using a slide show we built, but you can setup headers to have any content you choose. If you have a plugin that can be inserted with a shortrcode or custom code that can be added as HTML/JavaScript, it can be inserted in this area.

I think I get what you’re saying. You would have to create the links yourself to the Groups from each image but that’s not a problem. You can have images launch a lightbox, link to a page/post or any URL you choose so with the BP Group path as your link it should do just what you’re wanting.

Hello ,

Can a pay section ( pay subscription ) be integrated? ( woocommerce or Paypal)

There are plugins for WordPress and BuddyPress that allow this ability. One I’ve been told is very good, s2Member, although I have not used it myself.

Where can i find the french or other translation of the thème ?

I’m starting a french translation. but if some one have already this translation, he is my hero :)

themeforest erased my download info. I dont have the “special key to get into support group! How frustrating!

We only provide support directly to the account used to purchase a theme. If we can’t verify a purchase we can’t give support. You need to download the updated version of the theme to fix your issue.

Please contact ThemeForest support to get your account/purchase reinstated.

I need help!

I lost my support login, and I forgot to the email address I used for the account. I tried to make a new one but it won’t take my code anymore.

Also, the layout manager is broken. It’s not letting me slide the page elements.

Thanks, Greggy / littleboybluish

Please make sure you are using the latest version of the theme.

Can you help me gain access to the support forum? my email is greggy@outlook.com

and thank you for the fast response

Hello Parallelus My client has given me this theme to customize so sorry if I’m not using the purchased account. I just want to know, I want to add a certain div right in between the logo and the navigation bar and I wanted to know where I can locate the PHP file with this part of the header because it’s not default nor it is design. ,thanks a lot

Actually he ended up giving me access to your support forum and I saw what I was looking for. Thank you!

Ok, great.

I have a few questions before purchasing:

1. I have an established web site (over twelve years old) that is running wordpress/buddypress on a custom theme. I very much want to update and get a contemporary theme for the site and am looking at Salutations. But I don’t know if my site would qualify for a regular theme or the extended theme. I do have paid subscriptions, the content is spread across subdomains – as a way of organizing the content – and I do allow members to have blogs on subdomains, but their content must fall under site topics. I have no intention of running the theme on any other domains and have no intention of including it in any sort of resell package. The domain is: http://www.artist-at-large.com.

Could you tell me if the site qualifies for a regular license?

2. Many of my users are afraid of the WordPress Dashboard. If a user is blogging on their subdomain, are the admin pages themed? Maybe a better question is, do the admin pages come skinned out of the box, or would I have to use a separate plugin?

3. The site is image heavy, and potential users will want to use a gallery system on their blogs. I’m currently using NextGen for galleries. Would I have to reconfigure all of my current images and galleries in order to use the Salutations theme?

4. Just to make sure – theme colors are totally editable? I’d like to keep my color palette as a segue into a new look.

Thank you!

1. The licenses have recently been updated and they are “unclear” to me at best. If you want to see the information it’s available here:

http://themeforest.net/licenses And details on the Extended license: http://themeforest.net/licenses/extended

I’m actually very frustrated by the constant confusion and ambiguity in these Envato licenses so here is my stance on the issue. The last line of the license, clause 17, states:

The author of the Item retains ownership of the Item but grants you the license on these terms. This license is between the author of the Item and you. Envato Pty Ltd is not a party to this license or the one giving you the license.

And, as such, since this license is between me and you, I say that what you want to do is perfectly acceptable under the Extended license.

I will be making more inquiries on this matter directly with Envato. If I can specify terms on these licenses myself, things are about to get a whole lot easier for my customers.

2. The admin is not themed, and if you have not used Salutation before you may not like some of the functionality it provides in the editor interface. There are options to modify the layout, header, footer and skins in the post/page edit screen. You will probably not want your users having that ability. The solution could be a modified version of the theme be activated for user created blogs. There are also some great plugins allowing users to post articles from the public side of your blog. Here are a couple lists I found with a quick search. I’m sure you can find more with just a bit of time:

http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2012/03/wordpress-plugins-for-user-submitted-user-generated-content/ http://www.noupe.com/wordpress/building-community-sites-with-wordpress-15-plugins-to-get-started.html

3. NextGen will work fine with the theme.

4. Using the “skinning” ability of the theme to make a custom style sheet specific to your site’s colors, yes you can completely control and edit any color, font, width, height, etc. Anything can be changed.

My added thoughts…

I would highly recommend buying a copy with the Standard license and testing it before making a commitment like the Extended license. ThemeForest will not refund the purchase if you decide you don’t like it and I would hate for that to happen.

This theme has many advanced features you don’t see in a lot of other themes and for most users that is what they love about it, however when you have a specific need like yours that might present additional challenges.

The theme works very well in a multi-site environment, as it was built on a multi-site install. However, I didn’t design the features or functionality with multi-site use in mind. There are many things I would probably do a bit different or specific to multi-site use. Some users working on multi-site setups have posted modifications they’ve made on our Help Center. They can be very clever and useful updates.

I’m not trying to talk you out of buying the theme, but it is more important to me that you get the product which is right for you than just making a sale. If you have more questions please let me know.

Thank you very much!

The Extended License is out of my price range, which is why I asked about using the Standard License on a WP/BP Multisite using subdomains.

Yes, I’m used to being able to hack every bit of code in a theme, which is why I have been hesitant to upgrade the site. It seems that as WP moves along, the themes being created – especially those that are not free – are more and more difficult to work on. So that’s why I’m trying to be thorough with my questions before a purchase!

My current users have a really hard time using NextGen – they are terrified of it. So I’m looking for something that will integrate the posting of images and content process for them, and that the “Add New” post page is skinned for them – as part of the theme – maybe that would be a buddypress issue.

Is there a demo download available for testing purposes?

No, there is not a demo download available.

Hi there!

I’m loving the theme so far, it seems perfect the project I am working on!

One quick question regarding the top tabs. Using the shortcode to call the static content blocks doesn’t seem to work here. It’s really weird because in the widget text area if I remove the the shortcode and just type “test” it displays when the tab is clicked. However, with the shortcode in place, nothing displays. I’ve tested the shortcode on my homepage and it displays the static block just fine.

Any thoughts?

I’m not sure why that would be. The demo website uses a static block shortcode to insert content into the tabs so it will will. Please create a new topic on our Help Center so we can look into this. Thanks.

I take that back! I can’t seem to get the [static_content id=””] shortcode to display anything. Help! =)

Hi, I’m trying to join the support center (I bought a licence for the Salutation theme) but registration requires an Envato account but I can’t see how to join Envato and get a required username. I’m not really even sure what envato is, to be honest! I’m not a developer; just trying to put together my own art class web site: http://www.mcsherrystudio.com Any help gratefully received. http://2.envato-static.com/images/smileys/grin.png?1343094657

Envato is the parent company of ThemeForest. If you scroll to the bottom of this page you’ll notice an Envato logo on the lower right, that’s why.

Your Envato username is “kevinmcsherry”, the same as you login to ThemeForest with.

What is the name of the font used on the salutation logo? I bought this theme and i would like to make my logo using the same style

Inside the “Design” folder is the file used to create the font. The name is in the file name and in the help document. You can also open the file in Photoshop and it will show the font name.

When going to the “Forum” tab under a member’s profile, the pagination and topic count seems to wor, but the topics themselves aren’t listed. It looks like their invisible … the length of the page is long as if there should be content, but there isn’t. Any ideas?

I have bunch of pre-sales questions:

1) Is it possible to remove BuddyPress logo through the admin from My Account pages? I want to be able to remove it via admin – as I am not a good coder?

2) What is the width of sidebar on Forums? http://themeforest.net/item/salutation-wordpress-buddypress-theme/full_screen_preview/548199 – I want to make sure I can put 300×250 banners in there?

3) Are avatars automatically assigned to new users to assure that theme looks good?

4) Can register user create a blog, or this is reserved for site administrator? I thought registered user could start a blog, but when I registered I could not see option how to start a blog. Please make this little more clear for me.

5) Where can registered user create content – through forums only?

5) Do visitors have to be registered to view forums, or forums are public and indexable by search engines?

1. I’m not sure where the BuddyPress logo shows in the admin. Maybe you’re asking if using the admin options you can remove the logo showing in the public BP areas on the demo? If that’s the question, the answer is “Yes” it is just a piece of demo content we added so viewers would know they were using BP features in that section of the demo. It won’t even show up on your site unless you add it.

2. The layouts are specified by you in the admin so it is your choice if you have a larger or smaller sidebar (or none at all) for the BuddyPress areas. These are the sizes of the sidebar in specific layouts:

  • Full width: 926
  • Half width: 449
  • One third width: 289
  • Two thirds width: 607
  • One fourth width: 210

3. The default avatar set in your admin will automatically be used for any users new or existing without a custom avatar.

(update: sorry I hit enter and it submitted before I answered #4, 5 and the other #5)

4. BuddyPress has an option to allow users to create blogs.

5. BuddyPress has forums and activity. The options for enabling user created content on your site is something you can configure and fine tune directly in your WP options and permissions. It’s not related to the theme at all really.

6. BuddyPress offers a number of visibility settings for forums. Public, Private and Hidden. Private can only be viewed by group members. Hidden do not appear at all except for those already in the group. It’s a way to make an invitation only group preventing unwanted members from “requesting” membership. These settings are applied universally so search engines also cannot index an area if it’s not public.

Thank you for quick answer. Couple more questions: 1) What is the installation process – do I have to have default WordPress, BuddyPress and bbPress installed on the server and then I just apply your theme over it and it would automatically recognize all elements?

2) Can you please post some links of live websites from people who purchased the theme from you?

Thank you!

1. You can install, setup and configure those things in any order you like. The only thing you need before installing the theme obviously is WP.

2. I would LOVE to do that, if some customers would give me their links! I don’t post these without the user sending me the link and expressly saying that they allow me to post it publicly. Sometimes I will ask for permission from sites I find or provide help. As it stands now, I don’t know of many. Usually I only hear from a customer when there is a problem and I haven’t heard from a lot of Razor customers. ;)

This WebDesigner wrote an article on reasons to avoid these theme. Here is the article: http://customwebdesignseo.com/why-avoid-wordpress-salutation-theme/

It has nothing to do with the looks (great looks) but the way it works. I realize that this webdesigner did her analysis in October 14th, 2012 and since then you had 3 updates to this theme. However, as I read updates in your log update file, I am not clear on how many of these issues were addressed. I am also not sure if all issues she has reported are legit or not as I haven’t purchased this theme yet.

Could you please take a moment and comment on these issues important to me (she mentions these issues in her review of your theme)

1) Load Time 2) Not Responsive (not a big deal, but do you plan to make it responsive in the next updates, or that is not possible) 3) Buddy Press issue she is reporting – it is very important that this works smoothly 4) Cache Issue she is reporting – important

Thank you for your time!

I’ll begin my response with a statement. This person doesn’t know what they’re talking about. They tried to build a site with Salutation and start a “Salutation Help Center” of their own. I think maybe there’s some sour grapes here because I wouldn’t help drive traffic to that site by allowing links to be posted here as “advertising” for them. Also, I don’t believe they ever used v2 or later of the theme which as an incredible number of enhancements (see change log on item details).

1. Read the article she’s referencing. That original author was incorrect (and has posted an update/retraction) about many things. Specifically the size of the theme he was laughably wrong. That number was including dozens of optional Cufon font files that are never loaded. The theme is nowhere near that size and it’s clearly rebutted (by our customers!) in the original article cited.

Further, the theme loads very quickly. The PHP is not the determining factor in this. Our code is clean and efficient. WordPress is 1,000x bigger in code and you don’t hear people worrying about it loading fast. A bigger factor would be a design with lots of images, of which Salutation has almost none. It’s mostly a CSS driven design.

Visit our demo site and see for yourself. Even without any caching the theme loads very quickly! I could probably cut that time in half if I did even the minimal caching, which is a simple task. We leave it out on the demo because of the testing features and the skin changer that will not work (demo only) when caching is enabled.

2. Yes, the theme is not responsive. We might add this at some point.

If the site is loading slow on a mobile device, it is because of the content added by the user, or a sub-par hosting service. Again, please test our demo and see for yourself rather than taking my word for it.

3. This is absolutely not a caused by the theme. Whatever was happening to this person, which I can’t even imagine, was something else. We have hundreds, maybe thousands of people using the Activity Plus plugin for BP and we have not had a reported issue with it, probably in over a year. If they were having problems, they must not have told us, or known it wasn’t the theme causing them because we never got a report. One thing I can tell you for certain. When something doesn’t work with our theme, customers are not shy about letting us know. If there was an issue with this BuddyPress plugin we would know about it.

With the release of v2 of Salutation, the number of plugin conflicts has dropped significantly. That was the entire focus of the update and it worked. Most of the time when we have a conflict now, it is the plugin needing to be fixed, not the theme. I don’t believe this person ever used v2 or later. Their site had been changed to another theme before it was released from what I remember.

4. Since v2 was released, I don’t know of any caching plugins that do not work with Salutation.

Now that I know about this post, I’ll be making sure my customers know about it. They’ll correct the incorrect and misleading information in the post. We have a very loyal following of our work for a reason and thankfully I don’t have to fight these battles alone. I hope you’ll be one of those soon and can write your own response that post. :)

I am interested in purchasing this theme but firstly wanted to check is the theme responsive? or include a mobile alternative?

The theme isn’t responsive but does work very well on mobile devices.
