Hello,
Fantastic theme! I just purchased it and have finished the basic setup. Tomorrow I’ll start adding all of my posts/images and launch the new site!
There is one thing that REALLY bothers me though. Had I known this from the get go I may not have purchased the theme, but I’m knee deep in it now and have decided not to turn back. There really should be a way to exclude regular blog posts from the gallery slider. Many blog posts will have featured images that are not taken by the photographer. As it is now, people will think those images were. Plus, why circumvent regular blog posts in one of the best pieces of software made specifically for blog posts???
I’m a PHP programmer. I took a quick look at the code and think there is a really easy way to do this.
1) Add another tab in the custom theme options called “Blog Posts” (Appearance > Theme Options > Blog Posts). In there, users will be able to check off categories that have regular blog posts. If you really want to simplify it, have them select just one category from a drop down (they will just have to put all of their regular blog posts in that category). You can also place an enable/disable button for those who don’t want separate blog post functionality.
2) Create a page that looks identical to the core home page, except it only pulls posts from those categories listed in step 1 and it has a scrollable grayed out area directly in the center of that page that contains the blog content.
3) Edit the home page slider so that it doesn’t pull posts from the categories in step 1. Done!!!
Maintaining a blog is a great advertising tool for photographers when done right! Working the above changes in will add a ton of value on top of the already excellent features this theme offers.
Shutter uses image/video post formats by choice. This way it’s much easier to add content and all searches (keywords/tags/category) always target the main gallery so user can easily browse/search a huge database of pictures.
You’re right, to exclude a category from the main blog main page would require very little (if any) effort but we can’t use gallery layout with a scrollable area showing full post content because that would basically destroy mobile experience.
We may add such feature in a future update if there’s enough demand for it but, in this case, we going to use a dedicated layout to handle regular posts not meant to be shown in the gallery.
BF
That would be great (“we going to use a dedicated layout to handle regular posts not meant to be shown in the gallery”), just having them separate from posts that features actual photography is the main concern. Thanks for the reply!
Hello,
I just noticed that background images on pages and posts isn’t working on my blog. I’ve gone through the documentation but I can’t seem to get it working. Here is an example…
Pixelentity Demo: http://shutter.themes.pixelentity.com/2012/04/06/post-title-01/ One Of My Blog Pages: http://www.jabarihunt.com/h4d-review-well-sorta/You can see that the featured image displays in the background on your your post, but not mine. I’m sure I’m missing something simple, can you help me out?
Thanks!
Hi
check the value of Theme Options -> Background -> Post/Page Background Image
you probably have the option set to “none”, use “black and white” instead.
BF
That was the first thing I tried…both Color & Black & White
then please head to our our support forum, create a new thread about it and use “contact us” link on forum footer to send us admin access to your site.
BF
hey, how can I use NextGen Gallery to replace category from the left-bottom side where now are post thumbs from a specific category. Thanks
Hi mihai
such feature is not currently implemented, you’d need to customize theme code to obtain it
BF
Full-width page option? Is there anyway you could add a full-width page option to this theme? It would be nice for photographers to use your gallery as their portfolio (like on the home page and their photos in the categories) but then have full width pages where photographer’s clients can view that has their private gallery only (password protected). You know what I’m saying?
A full width page would also require an horizontal header (logo + menu). We may add in future updates if there’s enough demand for it
BF
This may be a general WordPress question more so than one for this particular theme, but is there a way to have the home page default to a particular category?
Not out of the box – you’d have to change theme code for that, like detecting if is_front_page() and alter query post so that posts are only fetch from a particular category.
BF
Gotcha…page.php or index.php?
index.php
please note that, as customization, we wouldn’t be able to provide any specific help on this subject

Great looking theme – however on mobile you can’t read the text without zooming/out. Are you using media queries to denote screen size so I can modify the css etc to increase font size to make items readable on screen etc?
Hi,
The gallery is the only “responsive” part of this theme, meaning it adapts its elements for display on mobile screen size (done using js detection & not media queries). All other pages display on mobile just fine, just like they would on a desktop site, so as you have noticed, zooming and panning is required to read the page’s contents.
DOK
Oh that is a real shame as if it was truely responsive it would have made a great theme (don’t get me wrong – nice looking theme on desktop)
Hi,
I am done setting up the theme but there is one hitch. In the “information” box (when you click the i button for a picture), I get “Posted in Random by Admin on” and there is no date following the “on”, but the intro text (before the “read more”) follows. I have no idea why this happens. Please help ASAP .
Thanks
P.S. I just realized that the date shows on some posts and does not show on some others
Hello,
Update: only the first post on the home page (gallery page) shows the date in the information box “Posted in Category by Username on May 6, 2012”, all other posts show ””Posted in Category by Username on”. However when you click through (click read-more) to the article page, the date is properly displayed for all of them. The same issue exists in your online demo so can you fix this please?
Secondly, please how do I add a blog page list / archive list (paginated) of all the posts?
Hello
please head to our support forum

Done. I sincerely hope responses on the forum are faster…

Hi. i just purchased your theme. I don’t belong to your support forums and can’t figure them out. I do not have a logo for my website and want to simply put text in that area. How do I do that? Thank you.
Hi,
You will have to write your text in an image program, such as photoshop and save it as a png image. That area only accepts images.
DOK
I did that and it worked. Thank you for such a quick response!
Is there a tutorial somewhere? I have never used Wordpress before and need help setting this up. I don’t even know where to put my images in the theme. Thank you.
Hi dmregan,
In the download package you will find comprehensive documentation covering all of the functions in the theme. Use of this theme and any theme from Themeforest requires a basic understanding of how to use WordPress. There are many resources online designed to help first time users of WordPress and we would recommend that you search for some of these. Teaching our buyers on how to use WordPress is unfortunately beyond the scope of our support.

Hi,
Right click on the link and select “Save Target As” or “Save Link As” and then save the xml file to your computer somewhere.

Please can somebody explain where the plugins are on the unzipped file as I cannot see them for the life of me. Many thanks.
Hi,
There is only 1 plugin that this template uses (NextGEN Gallery), and even this plugin is optional and has nothing to do with the main homepage gallery. To find the download link for this plugin (its not included in the download package) see the appropriate section in the help documentation.
Regards,
DOK
Thanks – I am referring to the instructions where it says “Unzip the plugin you have downloaded, onto your local machine and using an FTP client (eg. Filezilla) upload the plugin folder into the following location in your WordPress installation: wp-content/plugins/”
Hi,
This is referring to the plugin (“nextGen Gallery”) once you have downloaded it. As mentioned earlier it is not included in the download package.
