Hi, how can i change the prettyPhoto lightbox from “single image” to “image gallery”; http://www.no-margin-for-errors.com/projects/prettyphoto-jquery-lightbox-clone/#prettyPhoto[pp_gal]/1/

Thank you very much.

WPExplorer

Where exactly are you trying to change it?

If you add:

 rel="prettyPhoto[gallery]"

to any link it will create a gallery lightbox.

I want to add next and back buttons to this gallery… http://bit.ly/TmbfSQ the code now is [gallery link=”file” columns=”4”].

WPExplorer

Because this is the standard WP gallery the only way to do that is to alter the entire wp-gallery output via a fairly complex function. I don’t do this because it can cause some issues. What I suggest doing is editing the js/jquery.init file line 137 to remove – .gallery a – from the prettyPhoto function. This will remove the lightbox completely from the WP gallery. Then see about using an external plugin that accomplishes what you seek – maybe the JetPack carousel? http://jetpack.me/2012/07/13/jetpack-1-5-with-carousel/ (haven’t tested it yet, but looks alright).

Hope this helps, thank you for the purchase,
Aj

Hi there,

I’m trying to get my newsletter page set up in the way the sample blog page is set up. However, I end up with most of the blog page blank and the blog excerpts in an area 470px floated right.

When I click one of the posts, I see more of what I would expect with the article on the left and the sidebar on the right.

In the Wordpress options, I have my static page set to (a 3 language option) portal page, since the site will be divided into 3 language versions (with buttons leading to one language version mini-site). My posts page is set to newsletter (which is the blog page).

In theme options for blog, I have URL set to http://icmf.whitbeckweb.com/icmf-newsletter/ and full content enabled.

I think the theme is confusing my blog page as my home page, but I’m not sure why this would be the case. If I disable “blog & portfolio” on the theme homepage settings, my blog article disappear.

I’m sure I’m doing something wacky, but I can’t figure it out.

BIG thanks in advance for your help.

Best,

Jon

WPExplorer

It is definitely confusing your blog page as your homepage. When you create your blog page you should be creating it as a regular page and using the blog template. This template will automatically pull your blog posts. So you’ll need to make sure under Settings->Reading for the second option you leave it blank, otherwise this will happen. See img below for clarification:

Hi AJ,

You ROCK ! Thanks so much for your quick reply. I was going crazy trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.

Could you add that little tidbit to your documentation? Maybe other folks haven’t made the same mistake, though. :)

I gave this theme a 5-star rating. Have a great week!

BEst,

Jon

WPExplorer

I thought I had that in the docs, I’ll make sure it’s in there ;)

Glad I could help you out & thanks for the rating Jon!

AJ -

Thanks to your excellent commenting I’ve been able to manage customizing this theme well thus far. So I hope this is a simple question born out of wordpress / php ignorance: As I add portfolio items, I cannot seem to get the awesome-icon-th to appear between the left / right icons on the portfolio detail pages.

What do I need to do to make this appear? Is there a way to make this icon persistent for all portfolio items?

I’m trying to ensure an easy link back to the portfolio filter page from the detail pages. I plan to have several different portfolio types on the site. It seems like the function is built in, but I must be doing something wrong…

Thanks in advance!

WPExplorer

For a while we couldn’t bundle these fonts with our themes so you have to add them manually as explained here:

http://www.wpthemehelp.com/knowledgebase/add-font-awesome-icons-to-your-theme/

Now we can add them in the theme by default, I will be updating all my themes shortly so people don’t have to do this.

If you have added the fonts and the issue persists, let me know!

There is an option in the theme panel under the portfolio page to enter the URL of your portfolio page for that little 4 squares link back as shown in the demo. Because the portfolio page is just a page and it can have any slug, the only way is to have that option in the theme panel. Should be easy to spot ;)

Hope this helps!

AJ – thank you for the ridiculously fast response!

The URL in the theme panel fixes the issue I was having, but sadly creates a new issue: what happens when you want to have more than one portfolio root? I have several product categories and I would like to separate each into filterable portfolios.

I’m terrible at PHP but it looks like, at minimum, I need to adjust line 531 of theme-options.php and line 29 of single-portfolio.php.

Can you lead me in the right direction to make this possible?

Thanks again!

WPExplorer

The issue with that is because there is no actual association between the single posts and filterable pages. You can easily link to the automatically generated portfolio categories created by WordPress (www.wpexplorer.com/premium/surplus/portfolio-category/scenery/) because there is a core function for that. However, if you wish to link to a filterable portfolio page you would actually need a specific meta option that you enter a URL for into each and every single-post. So every time you add a new post you would then have to paste the URL of where you want that link to go to and it will override the theme panel setting.

If you can wait 2-3 days I can update the theme to include this option so you don’t have to do it yourself. If you wish, please open a ticket at wpthemehelp.com and I will get to it as soon as I have some spear time.

AJ – You’re a rock star! I opened a ticket at wpthemehelp.com “Surplus Theme – Help creating separate filterable portfolios”.

I really really appreciate your help adding this additional functionality!!!

Thanks again!

WPExplorer

Alright. I have quite a bit of tickets and since this is a customization request which I usually would charge for it might take me a day or two to get back to you. If you don’t hear from me just reply to the ticket or something as a reminder ;)

AJ,

Any chance you can address this request soon? I tried reminding you via the ticket system as you suggested, but in the end the ticket was closed with out a solution. Is this not something you have time for? My offer to pay you for your time still stands.

WPExplorer

I decided it wasn’t worth updating the whole theme because it would be really easy to do this by simply creating new portfolio templates. If you contact me via my profile page I can email you (tomorrow probably) a template file that has been commented out showing you how you can easily make new templates for different filterable portfolios.

Default-user

Thanks AJ!!! I dropped you an email via your profile page.

I bought your Woodstock theme awhile back for my web design site and have loved it ever since. Just bought this theme for a client site and already love the theme options area and the site’s functionality. Keep up the badass work my friend! 8-)

Hi, firstly I love your theme and found it really easy to work with. We run a web design school here in Bangkok and i`ve referred many students to use your theme.

We are now about to re-design our main web site www.webcoursesbangkok.com and I was hoping to ask your advice.

What is the best starting theme? Or should we design the whole theme from scratch? What CSS framework do you use or is it also custom? Do you have any starter tips for us as this will be our first responsive wordpress theme we are creating.

Thanks again!

WPExplorer

Hi.

Fist of all thank you for your purchase!

Personally every theme I make I currently start mostly from scratch. Which isn’t really the ideal way to do it. I am working on a framework to use in the future, but these take a while to finish and I’ve been fairly swamped.

It really depends what you will be doing. If you are simply taking your current design and making it responsive, I wouldn’t bother with any css frameworks, I would just use media queries to “responsify”the current design.

To be honest I don’t really have any tips. I think your site looks pretty good how it is. I would just make slight modifications here and there to spice it up – such as updating the footer area, the logo, maybe simplifying some graphics…etc.

If you want to start pretty much from scratch using a framework you can use a free theme called “The Bootsrap” or “Skeleton”. These are 2 pretty decent starter themes.

I can`t thank you enough for this great reply thanks.

Actually we are going to move to a design like http://coworkchicago.com as we really want to show off our design skills as well as responsive prowess (we should if we are claiming to teach these two vital skills.)

We made www.webcoursesagency.com using Zurb Foundation and I am thinking of using the wordpress theme wp-foundation or Reverie to get us started.

What about using surplus as our base theme? Here is a interactive wireframe of what we are thinking of building: http://share.flairbuilder.com/?sid=6dh5b1H2o9 (note the top nav takes you to the pages we have created)

Hi WP Explorer, Love your theme! Quick question: I have tried to modify the width of the Highlights on the Home page so that if I only show one, it takes up the whole width. I have been mostly successful. However, the width shrinks back down to approximately 30% when on a tablet, portrait orientation. I have tried to modify the responsive.css file to resolve this issue, but nothing changes. Do you know where I might be able to fix this? Thanks in advance for all your assistance.

WPExplorer

Changing it in the responsive file should work, however, the quickest solution without messing with all the files would be to simply add the following in your css option in the theme panel or child theme – the !important tag should override the responsive settings:

Hi Aj,

This worked great with the exception of one thing. The right margin extends all the way to the edge instead of having some white space. However, this only occurs for the desktop and tablet sizing, not for the mobile sizing.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

WPExplorer

It should work fine – I tested it. The reason it would extend all the way is a negative margin on the main wrap which should be overwritten by:

#home-highlights{ margin-right: 0; }

Maybe try adding an !important tag?

#home-highlights{ margin-right: 0 !important; }

ps: Please hit the “reply” button on the original comment to create threaded comments so I don’t have to go searching for the original one. Thanks!

Hi AJ,

That didn’t seem to work. Is there somewhere private I can send you my WP login info and/or FTP info for you to take a look?

Thanks!

You can open a ticket at WPThemehelp.com – this is a customization request though and not a theme issue so it will get answered after other tickets have been resolved. I hope you understand ;)

Hi there – Building a site for a client and having had bad luck with the first theme she purchased, I have to say that Surplus is amazing and very flexible. I was looking for a way though to change the fonts on the headers. I’m using the Google Fonts plug-in and was able to change the body font no problem. Header fonts though are another matter. Also tried altering headers through CSS . I can change the colors no problem but not the font family. I’ve been digging through comments but no luck yet. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

WPExplorer

Hi Robb. Sorry for the delayed response. Hopefully you still get this.

First of all I am glad you like the theme!

Changing the font for the headers should be quite easy, but it really depends where you are changing them. Some has a special class of .heading, main titles have an id of page-heading. I would help you with the CSS you need, but I’ll need to know exactly which ones you are changing.

Hi AJ – It seems there is one header type that I have not been able to crack in terms of font control, namely the homepage slider caption header. I can control the caption body font fine, but I can’t seem to figure out the source for the header. Please help. Thanks!

WPExplorer

The font is being added like this:

.full-slides .caption h3 { }

Hope that helps! AJ

Hi AJ. Is there a way to add social icons at the top of the page to the Surplus theme (like you have in beta)? Thanks.

WPExplorer

If you notice the little “plus” symbol at the top loads in some social icons:

http://www.wpexplorer.com/premium/surplus/

If that doesn’t work for you, maybe you can remove the javascript then customize the CSS to position/style the social icons how you wish them to look.

Hello,

Is there a setup guide for this theme? I just downloaded it and I really need the help.

Thanks!

If you extract the zip file from the purchase there should be a folder in there called “Documentation”. And of course if you need any further assistance you can open a ticket at WPThemehelp.com

Hi again – figured out the issue with the fonts. Now another one: I’ve noticed that there is no “edit” button on posts, and I’m wondering if there is a way to add them back. Or maybe I did something on my end to eliminate them. Please advise, thanks.

WPExplorer

I simply didn’t add an edit button to this theme. You can easily add it in single.php around line 56:

<?php edit_post_link(); ?>

See the function for reference: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/edit_post_link

Hey there,

I’m trying to update my header but getting the ‘cheatin huh’ bug… how do I fix this?

Thanks

WPExplorer

This is an old issue that should be fixed in the latest version. It’s just a bug from WordPress 3.4+ – If you download the latest version and replace the file at admin/medialibrary-uploader.php with your version, it should fix up that problem.

-Aj

Default-user

Hey Aj, I’m still not really sure what you mean? Which file do you want me to replace it with?

I’m not great at this. Should i download 3.4.2?

Default-user

Should I install the update or just replace the admin/medialibrary-uploader. php with the latest one?

WPExplorer

Just replacing the file would be ideal so if you’ve made any adjustments to the theme they won’t be overwritten.

Oh, sorry if I confused you. When I mean download the latest version. I mean the latest version of the Surplus theme and replace the file in the theme’s admin folder called medialibrary-uploader.php.

I mention WP 3 .4, because that’s what’s causing the issue. And the newest Surplus version has the fix for it.

Hope that clears things up, AJ

Default-user

Cool, thanks Aj!

Default-user

Hey Aj,

Where about’s do I find the latest version? It looks like I’ve just downloaded the same version as last time?

WPExplorer

Maybe I forgot to update the theme version in the zip. But the fix should be there.

If you continue having the issue simply contact me via my profile page and I will help you out asap.

Simple question. Before I purchase this just need to know if it supports latin character set. need ö ä å for a swedish site. Thanks

WPExplorer

The font used in this theme is called Open Sans. You can see all the characters it supports here:

http://www.google.com/webfonts/specimen/Open+Sans

By default the theme doesn’t load the Latin set though to keep the site loading quickly. But it would be really easy for me to let you know how to update the google font. Or once purchased you can contact me via my profile page so that I can send you the updated files.

Please check above to see if the characters you require are included.

Before purchasing the template, I wonder if it supports WPML multilingual plugin. Thank you very much.

WPExplorer

It should. But there are certain things, like theme panel options that might need some tweaking. I made a little plugin so you can use a shortcode for translating text. It would be required for a couple areas.

Also, I’ve seen some troubles with WPML before in get_posts loops. You might have to tweak a couple templates by adding apply_filters => ‘true’ to the array – I could help with that though. If you see posts being “duplicated” that’s normally the issue.

I can help as best as possible, but in general it is a 3rd party plugin ( a premium one) so they should also provide support.
