Hello!

I am having an issue with the Portfolio. If you go to http://fortyunder40.innovateprincegeorges.org and click on the portfolio item, you will see that a large photo comes up also. How can I disable to the slider/photo area above the content? Please help!

WPExplorer

Hey there ;)

This isn’t really an issue. This is the way the portfolio is designed all post attachments show up in the slider. If you aren’t going to use the slider at all what you can do is remove the following from single-portfolio.php:

<?php get_template_part( 'includes/single-portfolio-media'); ?>

This will leave just the regular content from the editor.

Hi – I am having trouble changing the link colour from the green for links like author, category, tag and links within a post.

Where do I go to change that colour?

Thanks, Rach

WPExplorer

This is probably the body link color you speak of. Take a look at style.css line 92:

a {
    text-decoration: none;
    color: #6c981a;
}

Thanks for the purchase Rach

Hi again,

I am wanting the featured image on my blog posts to show as the full size of the image regardless of length rather than the same post-thumbnail size each time – it’s cutting my image and you can’t see the full effect of the image. I had a developer do it for me previously (you can see all my previous posts have it at www.penelopeandpip.com/blog), but I’ve lost that change now I have upgraded to the newer version of Surplus. Is there an easy way for me to make that change myself?

Thanks, Rach

WPExplorer

I’ts super simple to do Rach,

1. Open functions.php 2. Find line 45:

add_image_size( 'post-image',  700, 260, true );

3. Change it to the following:

add_image_size( 'post-image',  700, 9999, false );

4. Install, activate and run the “regenerate thumbnails plugin”.

Hi,

I’m trying to insert a youtube clip but it doesn’t seem to work correctly.

It sometimes doubles up or the size is always the full width of the page.

Is there a way to insert a youtube clip and able to amend the size?

Thanks,

Greg

WPExplorer

Hi Greg,

This theme has a jQuery script called “fitvids” which makes all videos expand to 100% for responsiveness. If a video had a fixed size, when you go down to a mobile size it could potentially be larger then the site itself and cause issues.

  • You can try adding it inside a column shortcode to limit it’s width.
  • Remove fitvids if you don’t care about mobile devices
  • Wrap inside a div with a width % added with inline css via HTML mode.

Hi, a noob here, have bought your lovely theme for some simple presentations :)

Uploaded 3 pictures for the image slider. How can I change the order in which these are displayed (currently I delete them all and upload again in the order they should appear. again: noob).

TY!

Hi again,

Loving Surplus. Having a weird issue with single portfolio pages. I have it set to default and each has a featured image. For some reason it isn’t pulling in the featured image attachment and displaying it in the post here (I promise there’s a featured image set for this post): http://www.gatehouse-design.com/kristalpooler/portfolio/21-middle-street-gloucester-ma-01930/

On others it’s working, but I think, through testing it has something to do with having had non-featured image attachments in those posts. I tried adding images in the main editor, refreshed, and the images show up. Then if I delete the extra one and just update with the featured image there it works. If I’ve never had any other images it doesn’t show the featured image.

It may be something I have messed up but I never touched those files (just working with a child theme and haven’t worked on single-portfolio at all). Or it may be a plugin conflict. Thought I’d ask your opinion first before I spend hours on it.

Best- Alice

WPExplorer

Hi Alice,

By default the theme only loops through your “attachments”. So if you have a featured image, but it wasn’t uploaded to that post it will not show. For example on that post you showed me, if you want the featured image to be included on the page, simply re-upload it, but make sure it’s uploaded while in that posts editor so it becomes an “attachment”.

When you click “Add Media” (WP 3.5) there is a little drop-down. All the images inside “uploaded to this post” will show up on the post. Anything else wont.

This allows for people to define a separate featured image for the thumbnail then the one displayed on the post.

Hope this explanation makes sense!

Default-user

Thanks AJ that makes sense. Sorry to be a pain.

So I took a look and commented out line 36 in template-gallery.php. ‘exclude’ => $featured_image_id. I thought that might fix if for me but I still don’t see my media-library-added featured image in the single portfolio (default) view. I’ve got my browser set to disable cache… hmm.

My client likes to upload images to the media library and then later go in and choose featured images from the selection in the library. If I ask him to re-upload the image into each post so it registers as an attachment it’s going to confuse him as he has only just got used to setting a featured image from the library. So I’d love it if I can somehow turn off that feature. We’re happy with always showing the featured image in any slideshow.

If it’s not possible I can probably figure out some other way around it.

Thanks again – your themes really are the best.

-A

Default-user

I think I was editing that in the wrong spot. I tried a couple of other hacks via the child theme but I can’t get the media library-added featured image to show. If it’s an easy fix for you to share, let me know, if it’s a tough one, maybe you can generally explain what I need to look at and I’ll see what I can figure out. I’m usually ok at working around things. Thanks in advance.

WPExplorer

Hi Alice,

No it’s a really really simple edit.

1. Open includes/single-portfolio-media.php 2. I’m assuming you are using the default “FlexSlider” style correct? 3. If so, go to line 93 and right under “ul class=”slides”” add the following:

http://pastebin.com/1RPVQGqW

4. Now you want to exclude this image as well to prevent it from showing in the slider. So go up to the vary top and inside the “img attachments loop” add a new parameter to the array..
'exclude' => get_post_thumbnail_id( $post->ID )

Hope this helps ya out!

Default-user

Thanks so much. I followed your instructions but is still empty. I have done the following:

1. tested that I am editing the right stuff by just throwing a

hello

instead of the include single-portfolio-media and that showed up fine.

2. checked that flexslider is selected in the portfolio type and that I am refreshing the correct page.

I wonder if, because the post_thumbnail was added just by picking an image from the media library, instead of being inserted in the post, it’s not being picked up by the img attachments loop.

My reasoning there is that I tested just adding a hello right under the if($attachments) ?> in the flexslider section. It didn’t show up. So I don’t think the loop is getting the post_thumbnail back as an attachment.

Thanks again for your help.

Default-user

p.s. I think I’d just like to leave the type set to simple images instead of the flexslider as that’s the default position and then the client has one less thing to remember to change.

Default-user

Hey AJ, sorry for all the bother. I think I fixed it for my purpose, using the code you sent and one more hack (I should emphasize that this is just customizing it for my specific need, not a bug at all, this theme is great and super-well-coded).

I figured out that it wasn’t getting the media-library-added featured image in the attachments loop. So because there was only that featured image in the post it wasn’t meeting the conditional and the code you sent me wasn’t actioned.

So I removed the if($attachments) and associated brackets from the stacked images section. That mean it could go ahead and print the code you gave me. That worked perfectly.

So thanks for all the help and if anyone needs to make this customization be sure to do it in your child theme ;)

Great theme, trying one customization I could use some guidance with. I note that your sample page: http://www.wpexplorer.me/premium/surplus/portfolio/desert-road/ uses the single-portfolio.php template. I would like to use this template as a page template for our services. So for this page: http://dev.allislandlandscape.com/landscape-maintenance/ the text appears on the left and a thumbnail swap slider of all the photos for this service on the left.

This way I have the text for that service on one page and the images pulled for that thumbnail swap slider related to that service.

I hope I was able to articulate that. I want all the services to have the description on the left and thumbnail swap slider on the right and only have one page to enter the text and point to the portfolio category for that service.

WPExplorer

Sorry I never got back to you. I honestly just didn’t see this comment. I’ve responded to your second response though, hopefully not too late!

too long – forget it

WPExplorer

Sorry, I must have gone through all my recent comments and not seeing yours then marked them as read ;(

I’ve come back to see your original message.

Basically from what it sounds like you want service posts to work just like portfolio posts? Have a look in includes/single-portfolio-media.php starting at line 130 under the title “show thumbnail image swap” you’ll want to duplicate this code into your single-services.php (don’t forget to also add “img attachement loop” on line 13 of this same file. And of course you’ll probably going to have to add a new class name to this section so you can style it accordingly for the service posts.

This is a fairly large customization so walking you through step by step would be a bit nuts. I hope I’ve helped guide you in the right direction!

Hi I’ve just purchased your theme, and I’m thrilled so far. I am from Denmark, and pretty new into making websites ( My 1.st). So I was wondering, if I could translate some of the preentered text from the theme, like the all the text in the blogfunction, so that it fx. says “leave a reply” in danist instead of english. Also the searchbar, I would like to translate. Is the only way to go through the PHP files and search for the text, or is there a more clever way to this. Thanks

Hi there,

First of all, love the customization of the theme!

Second, I’m seeing some strange jQuery errors on site:

http://www.wpexplorer.me/premium/surplus/files/2013/01/js-errors.png

Are you by any change using a caching js minify feature? Some of these have been known to cause issues with the js files.

If not, you can try re-downloading the theme and replacing those files mentioned in the screenshot with yours incase somehow yours got corrupt.

Default-user

Hi WPexplorer,

Will try replacing some jquery files let you know if it’s working again. Thanks for the great service and theme!

Hello,

I’ve purchased a few of your themes and Surplus a couple of times. Great stuff!

I am using Surplus for a 3 language Wordpress Multisite, and I’m wondering if there’s a way to have the search box text show in English, Spanish or French, depending of which subsite is being viewed. (The backend needs to be in English for all.)

If that’s not possible, perhaps I can remove the “to search type and hit enter”. Any suggestions?

For the Spanish & French, I added a header that says Search above the search box. The client would prefer consistency in language throughout, though.

http://icmf3.whitbeckweb.com/

Kind thanks,

Jon

WPExplorer

Hi Jon,

The searchbox should be localized, I’ve verified in the .po file.

It seems though you’ve setup your 1 site for each language, if so. Why not just duplicate the theme 3 times and have 1 theme for each language so you can then go in and change the text for each one?

For the default search widget look in searchform.php for the header search look in header.php

Hi there,

Wordpress Multisite works as a single install for as many “networked” websites that you need. Therefore, you can only have one theme install. I wanted a way the client could sign in once & have access to update all three languages.

So, if I go to search form.php I can delete the “watermark” instructions?

Big thanks for your continued support!

-Jon

WPExplorer

I am very well aware of how Multisite works, I have 5+ MS installs I work with on a daily basis.

You can install as menu themes as you want and activate different themes for each sub-site.

Example my demo site runs on an MS install, how could I possibly show all the theme demos if I could only activate 1 theme?

I personally don’t like it, but a lot of people use WPML for their multi-language sites, maybe it’s something to look into?

Default-user
jwhitbeck Purchased

Lol, sorry. Didn’t mean to mean to make assumptions or question your knowledge. Makes perfect sense that you would know… and I wouldn’t know what I was talking about. I didn’t realize that you could activate different themes for different site, but it makes perfect sense.

Do you think it would make sense to install the theme separately (or create 3 child themes?) just to swap out the search text?

So, when I choose “live preview” for any of your themes, that’s all through multisite? Or do you have your own website outside of this one where you have your demos viewable? Just curious. :)

THanks,

Jon

WPExplorer

Ha no worries ;)

Well most people usually use a language plugin for this sort of thing, such as WPML so they can have all 3 languages on 1 single install.

If using a multi-site like you have it setup, you are correct, a child theme for each site would probably be best.

Yes all my premium theme demos are on 1 single multi-site install at wpexplorer.me/premium. And my free theme demos are on a separate MS install at wpexplorer.me. Makes it a lot easier to create new demos when I release new themes, to make updates and just overall to manage. Pretty sure all theme developers do it like that.

Default-user
jwhitbeck Purchased

Yeah, it’s a site for a religious order. An international director is in charge of all of it. He deals with the English component, then has the other pieces translated. It’s a management thing. So, (I think, anyway) that they need the multisite. There isn’t anyone who deals directly with the French & Spanish in his/her native tongue.

I had no idea how developers managed the display of their themes. I also have no idea how you do what you do. I’m just happy to be able to customize the themes for my clients. Your guidance with various challenges has definitely enlightened me a tiny bit with how it all works, though. lol ;)

WPExplorer

Sounds like a jQuery issue, most likely from a plugin. Perhaps you updated WordPress and a plugin that wasn’t coded properly is now causing issues. If you can check using a browser web developer tool to see if there are any jQuery errors on the page. If you don’t know how disabling plugins 1 by 1 should work, make sure to disable any caching first.

I’m having a bit of a difficulty with the gallery. Is there a way I can create albums? So that only a preview picture shows and once clicked the others apear? Or even to use toggles as with portfolio? I tried that but seemed to break the gallery settings.

You can create “categories” for the portfolio. That sounds like maybe what you want. They work just like regular WP categories.

Hello, I’m having some trouble adding the tabs shortcode to a page, and I am hoping you can help. Is this the right format?

[tabgroup set=TEST GROUP channels titles=" TITLE 1, TITLE 2"] [tab position=1 set="TEST GROUP"]Orange[/tab] [tab position=2 set="TEST GROUP"]Apple[/tab] [tab position=3 set="TEST GROUP"]Banana[/tab][/tabgroup]
WPExplorer

Everything looks fine except for the “set” value in the tabgroup needs to match below. Looks like you are missing some ending quotes and added “channels”. Also best to keep it single worded.

Since the release of this older theme of mine I’ve released a shortcodes plugin that has tabs that might be a bit easier to use if you want to test it out:

If not, maybe you’d fine it useful for other projects – and its free ;)

Hi AJ,

I feel like I’ve seen you answer this question before, but don’t know how to efficiently look through your comments without a search. I read through a few pages of discussion without luck.

Anyway, I’m wondering how to change the Staff section to appear as a Newsletter section. (The client also wants a blog.) So, in the admin/dashboard I’d want to change the terminology:

  • Staff > Issue
  • Add New Staff Member > Add New Issue
  • Staff Options > Issue Description
  • Enter a position > Enter an issue teaser
  • Add New Staff Dept > Add New Volume Number

I’m not sure which files I’d need to find and update in order to affect all this change. You can give broad instruction. I think I’ll know what you mean, since I have in the past.

BIG thanks,

Jon

WPExplorer

Hi Jon,

Please refer to functions.php line 435. You can change all the “labels” inside the array and the slug. But don’t change the first ‘staff’ value on line 436 unless you are just starting because you will lose your posts.

If you change the slug on line 456 make sure to re-save your permalinks to prevent any 404 errors.
