Hi AJ,

As a follow up to my earlier post, I tried to change several files to do what I had hoped to do. The admin/dashboard reflected the changes, but the post type functionality was broken.

I imagine I made it more complicated than it needed to be. All I really need to do is alter the labels that the client sees. I ended up changing the PHP variable names. I think I was getting close to getting it all to work, but gave up, replacing the files I had altered with the original theme files.

Thanks in advance,

Jon

WPExplorer

Hi Jon,

You mean the custom post types? You should be able to change them in the theme admin. What do you mean by “broken”? If you get 404 errors after changing the options please go to Settings->Permalinks and re-save your permalinks because you’ve probably changed the slugs. This is mentioned in a big blue box above the settings.

Hope that helps!

Hi AJ,

I was able to change the labels in functions.php line 435. However, that didn’t change all of the labels. So, I ended up trying to convert Staff to become Newsletter.

I ended up replacing “staff” with “newsletter”, “staff member” with “newsletter”, “position” with “description”, “department” with “volume”. Except for CSS uses, I replaced all (of the above terms) in the functions.php file, and custom-editor-columns.php.

I then created a new taxonomy-newsletter_description.php based on taxonomy-staff-newsletter_description.php. I also created a new template-newsletter.php based on template-staff.php

I’m finding that I can create a newsletter and add a volume. I can also create a page and set it to the newsletter template. However, on the Newsletter Issues page, (below Slider Options) my Template Options still show Parent Staff Category. I can’t select a category, though.

I also noticed “staff” in loop-entry.php, so I added || get_post_type() == 'newsletter' at the end of the else if( get_post_type() under //Portfolio Entry. I’m not sure why it’s there, though.

I have a test newsletter. http://optimalhealthtoday.com/newsletter/march-13/ I have a Newsletter Issue page which shows the Volume (2013), but the test newsletter doesn’t loop. http://optimalhealthtoday.com/newsletter-issues/

Any suggestions? (This is what I meant about making it more complicated than it likely needs to be. I’m fine reverting to original Surplus files, if you think that would be easier. I may be close, though. Right?)

BIG thanks!

Jon

WPExplorer

Jon,

I think the issue is you changed the post type name not just the labels. If you did you’ll need to edit your template files accordingly as well. That’s why I added the options in the theme panel so people wouldn’t accidentally change the post type name.

Hi AJ,

I don’t feel confident I can fix the issue, since I thought I had changed the template files. So, I’m going to revert back to the original Surplus theme files, and just try to change the labels.

I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks!

Jon

WPExplorer

Try changing via the theme panel ;)

Hi AJ,

I think my reconfiguration may have worked properly (and I shouldn’t have deleted the files I made). I went back and read the documentation to ensure I was setting things up properly for Staff, and I saw that you have to include a featured image, which makes perfect sense.

Not a big deal. Going through all of the theme files and making changes gave me a better appreciation and understanding of how it all works. ...Better, not complete. lol ;)

So, I’m going to see if I can change the labels without changing the other code. By the theme panel, do you mean mean Dashboard > Appearance > Editor?

I often seem to try to complicate simple things.

Thanks!

Jon

WPExplorer

Oh cool ;) Good luck!

I got everything to work. The client will only see “newsletter”, but it’s really “staff”.

I think my challenge is knowing when and where to stop replacing the terms. If you go a bit too far, there can be a cascade of changes (in multiple files) that are necessary in order to keep things functioning properly.

As always, thanks for your quick and thoughtful guidance!

Best,

Jon

Hello, I have a question. I have added a portfolio item which I would like to appear full width but it only shows with a sidebar. I don’t know how to get rid of the sidebar in the portfolio template.

WPExplorer

Hum, none of the portfolio items are supposed to have a sidebar – have a look at the demo.

By any chance did you accidentally delete single-portfolio.php?

I solved the problem with the sidebar, but is there a problem with wordpress 3.5 and this theme? I tried to add images to a portfolio post but they are not appearing in a slide. I installed the example content and when I go to a portfolio post with more images I cannot find them in the gallery. What is going on? Do I have to wait for an update of this theme? Or is there another solution?

WPExplorer

All my themes are running WordPress 3.5 and you can see the slider working here:

http://www.wpexplorer.me/premium/sencillo/portfolio/hong-kong-at-night/

Please try logging into that post’s editor in the WP dashboard and hitting the “add media” button and uploading some images. They should then show up automatically in the slider.

I’m pretty sure I just answered a previous question from you as well. Sorry for the delay.

Hi there, l love your theme.

my question: is there a way that the portfolio toggle/Filter page shows the title and content (text) of a portfolio item as well?

Thanks for yourhelp, Frank

WPExplorer

Glad you like it ;)

It is possible but you will have to edit your template file. In both files template-portfolio-toggle.php and template-portfolio-filter.php you will see an article container with a class of “portfolio-item” you will want to show your title and excerpt there.

Hope that helps you out Frank.

Hi AJ,

This is a really great theme! I’m really loving it so far! I just have one quick question: For the portfolio posts, how do I make the slider appear on the right hand side of the page across from the body text (like in the example page here: http://themeforest.net/item/surplus-minimal-responsive-business-wp-theme/full_screen_preview/2129394). I have all of my portfolio posts set to default with a Flex Slider in the post, but the slider keeps appearing at the top of the post (like in this page: http://themeforest.net/item/surplus-minimal-responsive-business-wp-theme/full_screen_preview/2129394). How do I prevent it from doing that? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I’m brand new to Wordpress and am just figuring things out as I go along. Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

WPExplorer

Oh, it’s pretty simple. Change the post layout style to default for your posts.

If you want it always like this without having to set the option manually you can edit single-portfolio.php and change line 14 from:

$portfolio_style = get_post_meta($post->ID, 'surplus_portfolio_style', true);

to:

$portfolio_style = 'default';
Default-user

Hi! Thanks for the reply! I changed line 14 of single-portfolio to the code you specified but the content slider is still appearing at the top of the post not the right hand side. The only difference now is that the text is on the left side of the post instead of across the entire post and there is now a large blank space on the right where I want the slider to be. I started a ticket on your support site with a url to one of the pages so you can see what I mean. Please let me know if this is a bug or if I’m just doing something wrong. This is happening with all of my portfolio pages no matter what I try. :/ Thanks for you help.

WPExplorer

Alright I’ll take a look at the ticket. Thanks for opening one.

Hi, how do I make the Services page display services in 3 columns instead of 4?

Thanks! :)

WPExplorer

Alter your CSS to change the widths of your service columns. It’s simple math really. Take the width of the main wrap, subtract margins and divide by 4 to get your services widths.

See line 1638 in style.css for current services dimensions.

This is a customization you’ll need to do on your own, since it’s not issue/bug related.

Default-user

I tried that and it’s now in 3 columns, but the second row was broken up. I have five services – 3 are on the first row, 1 is on the second row, 1 is on the third row. Any idea what went wrong?

WPExplorer

See template-services.php line 90 – there is a div added to clear floats. You’ll need to change to $count==’3’.

Default-user

Awesome, got it. Thank you so much!

Does the theme use a css grid like 960, bootstrap or foundation?

WPExplorer

Pretty sure I didn’t add any specific grid styles here. CSS is applied directly to each section of the site accordingly.

Does the theme use a css grid like 960, bootstrap or foundation? The reason is i’d like to also increase the size to 1140 and make more complex layouts than just 4 columns.

I bought this theme awhile back and just getting around to cleaning it up this month. I can’t seem to figure out how to add the thumbnails to the default post thumbnail swap portfolio option.

Can you walk me through this?

WPExplorer

The thumbnails are added automatically to the thumbnail swap style.

The way the portfolio works is you simply go to your portfolio post editor, click on “Add Media” under the title and upload any photos you want included in the slider. They will then become “attachments” and will show up automatically.

Another way to “attach” images to a post is to go to your main media library and any image unattached you can click “attach” to attach it to a post. In WordPress any image can only be attached to 1 post.

Hope this helps!

The issue that I am still having, when I attempt to add the “Gallery” and use the swap thumbnail setting, it just sets a gallery shortcode into the portfolio post. At that point, it doesn’t appear correctly on the published page.

WPExplorer

Have you read my message above?

If it adds a gallery shortcode into the post it means you are inserting a WordPress gallery, which is not the way the theme works. I’ve explained above.

If you want to open a support ticket I can log in and make a sample post for you – http://wpexplorer.org

Sorry about the confusion. I don’t add it as a gallery. I click the “add Media”, I select my images, I click “insert into post” and they end up in the post and not as an attachment. They appear where ever the cursor was in my post page.

WPExplorer

Exactly. You don’t have to insert anything into the post.

Can you please re-read my message above?

I have a couple of additional questions about the Services: 1) How can I manually set the order in which services appear on the Services page? I’d like to highlight some before others. 2) I adjusted the services to show in 2 rows of 3 on the Services page, but when I added them to the Home page via Theme Options the alignment was way off. It had one row of 3, then one row of 1, then one row of 2. Any ideas? 3) How do I disable the blog post sidebar on the individual service pages? The site doesn’t have a blog so we don’t want that to show.

Thank you so much for your help!

WPExplorer

1. http://www.wpthemehelp.com/knowledgebase/changing-post-order-portfolio-services-highlights-staff-etc/

2. There is a div with a classname of “clear” added between items to clear floats. That might be causing the issue. Have a look with firebug.

3. I suggest using WooSidebars for better sidebar management: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/woosidebars/ – to remove completely delete the get_sidebar() function in single-services.php then edit your CSS to make the posts full-width.

In case anyone is interested, to fix the duplicate HP Highlights in WPML

edit /wp-content/themes/Surplus/includes/home/highlights.php

and replace this text

'post_type' =>'hp_highlights',
'numberposts' => '-1'

with this (make sure there is a comma at the end of the lines, well except for the last one)

'post_type' =>'hp_highlights',
'numberposts' => '-1',
'suppress_filters' => '0'

It works! I just tried it myself. You can use the same method to fix the following pages. All that you have to do is add ‘suppress_filters’ => ‘0’ after numberposts (or somewhere else within the $args array. If you get an error, you may have forgotten a comma.

includes/home/portfolio.php
includes/home/services.php
includes/home/highlights.php
includes/home/blog.php
includes/home/slides.php

WPExplorer

yes the suppress_filters is definitely the way to fix it.

The latest version of this theme should already have these adjustments. I think we forgot to mention the update on the changelog. We’ll double check to make sure.

Thanks for sharing!

Hey,

Great theme Surplus. One quick question: if I want to link the potfolio item to an external web address on the frontpage, how do I do this? Is there a plug-in for this? I am referring to the sections where it reads “mainos.”

http://www.mattipohjonen.com/demosite/

Thanks!

Matti Pohjonen

WPExplorer

This theme unfortunately doesn’t have the ability built-in for external URL’s on portfolio items like my more recent Ultra theme.

The only way you can do this is by:

1. Customizing the theme and adding a new meta option for an external URL.

2. if it’s only a few items I would suggest just using a 301 redirect either via the .htaccess file or a plugin.

Hey,

Question: Toggle Bars

Hey there,

I have a question regarding the Toggle Shortcode.

In the FAQ section the Toggles have the ”+” icon making it clear for users they can click on it. http://themeforest.net/item/surplus-minimal-responsive-business-wp-theme/full_screen_preview/2129394 However, the Toogle Shortcode does not have this icon which makes it less intuitive: http://themeforest.net/item/surplus-minimal-responsive-business-wp-theme/full_screen_preview/2129394

Is there a reason for this and is there a workaround to add this icon in the Toggle bars?

Tks,

Marcel

WPExplorer

I think I just wanted to keep them clean ;)

You can add the plus icon with a little CSS…

.toggle-wrap .trigger a { padding-left: 30px; background-image: url(url to an image of choice); background-position: left center; background-repeat: repeat-none; }

There isn’t an image in the theme though by default so you’ll need to use your own.

Or if you want maybe you’d want to try out my new shortcodes plugin:

Yes, you would do this via CSS. Either using a custom CSS plugin or adding custom code to your style.css file

Hi there,

I use your Surplus-Theme and it’s beautifully made! Just one little question regarding the portfolio-section as thumbnail-gallery: Is ist possible to display the projects name next to the thumbnails? Would be perfect to be shown as overlay or at least under the image…

Thanks for your answer,

This would require updating the template files to display the image caption or description. If you open a ticket at the support site – http://wpexplorer.org – I can’t give you the full step by step procedure but I can at least guide you in the right direction.

Mixing Thumnail Swap Images with Video Thumbs

I am currently creating a portfolio page with preview images set as featured image.

On the detail page to which I get when I click the featured image on the portfolio main page I selected thumbnail swap pages: http://wpexplorer-demos.com/surplus/portfolio/trees-killed-by-lava-flow/

What I would like to do now is the thumbnails on the portfolio detail page (for one project) either being connected to an image showing in the slider viewing port or an embedded video when clicking on the thumb.

So that for a project for which I have both – video and images – I can show them both on the project detail page.

Is there a not too complicate way of doing that?

Tks a lot.

WPExplorer

In terms of “complicatedness” it depends on your coding skill levels or that of the person you hire for the work. What you can do, since the single portfolio post works with an attachment loop is you can check for the attachment description field which you can use to enter a video URL, if the field isn’t blank use oembed to render the video instead.

The javascript would have to be modified as well, because it would it’s currently a simple image swap. Would need to be changed to be more like a show/hide div function (more like tabs where the images are the tabs).

Issue Symple Shortcodes

I have some text on a page which is organized in a list and displays properly. Now I wanted to add a Button with Symple shortcodes underneath the list which I did with the plugin switchin from text editor to Visual Editor.

After adding the button, the list changes with weird spaces etc. which then looks as follows:

The steps basically look as follows:
    • Supplier Assessment

    • Product Design & Prototyping (if required)

    • Product Sampling & Sample Approval Procedure

    • Bulk Production & Bulk Production Approval Procedure

    • Quality ControlNormally we conduct several on-site quality controls before and during the different steps of the production process

    • Product Testing & Certification

  • Logistics & Customs HandlingDepending on the shipment and delivery method agreed on)
  -

Why is that?

Would be great if you could help.

Tks a lot.

PS: I thought it would just display the text not the html of the text but you could probably still see the weird formatting in the source.

Hi there, on listing of portfolio items is there a way we can show the title and some intro text for the item. Also where do I change the size of the image that is called?

http://secure.webcoursesagency.com/star/?portfolio_cats=courses

We would like more of a portrait look to the image with the title and text below.

Thanks,

C

WPExplorer

- Not by default. You’ll have to edit your template files. I’ve had several people request it though, so I will likely be adding portfolio details to the next update when 3.6 is released.

- You can change the image sizes in functions.php – see line 35 under “Images”. If you change the size though you will have to either re-upload your featured images or run the Regenerate thumbnails plugin – again, this will be altered in the next version to use an “on-the-fly” cropping img function.

Question Password Protected Post

Hi AJ,

I just tried to password protect a portfolio post with is a Thumnail Swap. The post does not have any text but only pictures at the moment.

After setting the password, I realized that the protection that requires a password only refers to the text part of the post, not to the images included in the post’s slider.

Is there a way to protect these as well without any programming or changing of the CSS?

Tks,

Larry

WPExplorer

Hi Larry,

There is no way of protecting the images without editing the template files.

You simply need to edit single-portfolio.php and surround anything you don’t want to show inside a conditional like such:

<?php if ( !post_password_required() ) : ?>
don't show this content if the post is protected
<?php endif; ?>
