Common WordPress Installation Issues

Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a “Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the docs?

You can find the online docs here: http://www.wpexplorer.org/online-docs/thunder/

Where is the changelog for this theme?

Installing and uploading sample data video guide

Trouble Installing?

The thunder theme is fairly larger then most themes out there due to all the included plugins. If you are having troubles installing it is most likely due to your server memory limit.

1. My first suggestion is to upload your theme via FTP
2. Contact your host to see if they can increase your memory limit.
3. Increase your memory limit yourself – http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP 4. The largest portion of the theme is the plugins folder. If you want you can unzip the theme and remove the plugins folder then re-zip and upload the theme. If you do this you’ll then need to install your plugins manually using the removed zips.

How do I Install the Recommended Plugins?

The plugins required with this theme should be automatically installed, however, if they don’t auto install or if you are looking for the latest version you can find them inside your theme’s “plugins” folder.

How do I upload Sample Data?

Sample Data isn’t automatically added to your site, for most people this wouldn’t be beneficial, instead there are specific files included to import sample data.

When you go to download your purchase click on Download->Main files. After this folder downloads, unzip it and locate the folder called “SampleData”.

Within this folder you will find your sample data file(s).

  • Before uploading your Sample data you might want to install and activate the recommended plugins (please refer to the documentation) to help prevent any errors after import.

To upload your WordPress sample data, log into your WP install and browse to Tools->Import and follow the instructions.

After the import is complete you should have all the posts/pages from the demo with dummy images.

There are certain things a WP import can not do, so after uploading sample data

  • Go to Appearance->Menu to set your menu locations.
  • Go to Appearance->Widgets to add your widgets (widgets aren’t included in a WordPress export)
  • Set your homepage at Settings->Reading using the “Home” page as a static page.
  • Go to Appearance->Theme Options to setup your theme options.

Is Sample Data For Sliders & Pricing Tables Included?

Yes! Within the SampleData folder in your theme purchase you will also find the sample data for the sliders from the demo and pricing tables.

How do I first setup my homepage?

  • Create a new page
  • Select the “Homepage” template
  • Publish
  • Browse to Settings -> Reading
  • For “Front page displays” select “A Static Page”
  • Choose the page created earlier
  • Posts page:” can be left blank (best) because you can create your blog page using the “Blog” template.
  • Go to Appearance -> Theme Options -> Home tab to edit your homepage options.

Where is the theme admin panel located?

To access your theme options panel simply log into your WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance->Theme Options. Here you will find all the different settings for your theme.

How do I setup my contact page?

For our themes we generally just use some shortcodes to create a new contact page layout. You would get this if you upload the sample data, otherwise it’s not hard to re-create or make your own fancy contact page using the included shortcodes.

The contact form itself is not built-in. Contact forms shouldn’t ever be built-into a theme. That said, we provide support for a great free plugin called “Contact Form 7”. So we recommend you download and use this one: http://wordpress.org/plugins/contact-form-7/

To add your map at the top like the demo, simply use the Symple Shortcodes plugin or another Google map plugin of your choice.

How do I fix 404 Errors?

If you are getting any 404 errors on your site most the time it can be fixed by re-saving your permalink settings.

Go to Settings->Permalinks and click the save button

How do I add my blog page?

We include a blog template with the theme. To create your blog page simply create a new regular page then select the Blog template.

If it doesn’t work, make sure under “Settings > Reading” the option for “Posts page” is set to ”- Select -”. Otherwise it can conflict.

How do I link to my Portfolio, Services, Staff, Tesitmonials or FAQ in my WordPress Menu?

You can link to these either via a custom URL or you can use the following plugin to add them directly to your menu dashboard for easier usage: http://wordpress.org/plugins/post-type-archive-links/

How do I add multiple images to my portfolio post to create a slider?

1. Select the “Gallery” post format
2. Add images using the metabox as shown in the image: http://www.wpexplorer.com/wp-content/uploads/thunder-portfolio-gallery.png

What are some awesome plugins you recommend?

How Can I make sure my theme is fast?

The theme is already super well optimized for speed, but of course there are always more you can do, here are some tips:

  • First I suggest going into the admin and in the optimizations tab enable the Homepage Query caching.
  • I would also recommend you try the following minify plugin – http://wordpress.org/plugins/bwp-minify/ – I tested it with my theme and saw no issues, but its always good to test everything after you try it out especially if you have 3rd party plugins active.

What should my child theme style.css look like?

/*
Theme Name: Thunder Child
Theme URI: http://yoururl/
Description: Child Theme based on Thunder
Author: Your Name
Author URI: http://yoururl/
Template: wpex-thunder
Version: 1.0
*/

@import url(”../wpex-thunder/style.css”);

Symple Shortcodes Inserter Pop-up Showing Blank.

Had this issue a couple weeks ago and after re-setting up Cloudflare I had the same issue, but it’s solved now.

If anyone has an issue with getting the shortcodes pop-up to work (loads blank page) – and you’re using Cloudflare – add the following pagerule to your Cloudflare setup:

yourdomain.com/wp-content/plugins/symple-shortcodes-premium/

Typically, /wp-admin/ is removed by default in Cloudflare, but because the admin is pulling from outside wp-admin in this case, it causes issues.

How To Create Staff Categories (different staff pages):

Creating staff categories are very easy…here are some screenshots to help (think about it just like standard categories):

How can I change the colors of the header area (page title).

This section isn’t added in the theme options for a few reasons, so you’ll need to add some css to the Custom CSS tab in the theme panel.

Example for the default layout:

.page-header { background: YOUR CUSTOM COLOR; }
.page-header-title { color: YOUR CUSTOM COLOR; }
#page-header-description { color: YOUR CUSTOM COLOR !important; }

Example for the boxed layout:

body.light-main-skin .page-header { background: YOUR CUSTOM COLOR; }
body.light-main-skin .page-header-title { color: YOUR CUSTOM COLOR; }
#page-header-description { color: YOUR CUSTOM COLOR !important; }

How can I center the fixed header on the boxed layout?

EDIT: THIS HAS BEEN FIXED AND IS THE DEFAULT BEHAVIOR IN THE LATEST VERSION OF THE THEME

The issue is because the theme allows for different widths of the layout its not really possible to create a fixed header that will work for all the possible options people may add in there.

Below is some CSS to help you get started though:

/* make fixed header centered */
body .sticky-header #masthead { background: none; box-shadow: none; -moz-box-shadow: none; -webkit-box-shadow: none; }
body .sticky-header #masthead { background: none !important; }
body .sticky-header #masthead-inner { background: #fff; width: YOUR MAIN CONTAINER WIDTH; margin: 0 auto; padding: 0 40px; box-sizing: border-box; -moz-box-sizing: border-box; -webkit-box-sizing: border-box; }

How can I order my portfolio posts?

To sort the main portfolio would require you to alter the query for that archive and/or taxonomy. This can be done via a custom function in a child theme (although there might also be a good plugin for re-ordering posts, have a look on WP.com).

It’s very easy!

Example: https://gist.github.com/wpexplorer/8682239

Have a look at all order and orderby parameters here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Class_Reference/WP_Query#Order_.26_Orderby_Parameters

Why can’t I see the Visual Composer After Updating?

The Visual Composer as been moved out in Version 1.4 so that you can use it as a plugin rather then having it built-in (ThemeForest rules).

You should receive a notification to download and activate the Visual Composer plugin. If you don’t see the notice you can find the zips for the plugin in the theme’s “plugins” folder.

Where can I get the latest version of the included plugins?

You have 3 choices:

1. Purchase the plugin from CodeCanyon which will give you access to exclusive plugin support and updates.

2. I will update the zip in the “plugins” folder within the theme to always have the latest version. So you can re-download the theme, extract and locate the plugins folder which should have the zips of the included plugins.

3. If you update your theme and it has the latest version of a plugin inside it then you can delete the plugin from your site and you should see the notice at the top again to install it (like when you first activated the theme) this will install the latest version.

4. Message me privately and I’ll email you the zip (Only if the latest version isn’t in the plugins folder, please check there first).

How can I add more room in the header for links?

This theme wasn’t designed to have a massive navigation bar, however, if your site requires it the CSS below can help! It will remove the fixed width for the navigation so your logo and navigation span the whole width of the site. In most cases it might not look super good, but for some it might be perfect. Anyway, it’s just a tip!

@media only screen and (min-width: 959px) {
    #masthead-inner.container {
        width: 100%;
        padding-left: 50px;
        padding-right: 50px;
    }
}

Why aren’t my icons working?

This could be an issue with @font-face not loading correctly on your server. Try creating a .htaccess file in your theme’s “font” folder with the code below:

<FilesMatch ".(ttf|otf|eot|woff)$">
  <IfModule mod_headers.c>
    Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*"
  </IfModule>
</FilesMatch>

How do I update my theme?

You have many options..here are some:

1. In your theme panel under the “Updates” tab you can enable auto updates so you can update your theme via the dashboard.
2. You can use the Envato Toolkit to update the theme via the WP dashboard – https://github.com/envato/envato-wordpress-toolkit
3. You can re-download the theme and override the files via FTP.

PS: It’s always a good habit to backup your whole site when updating themes/plugins just to be safe!

Why Can’t I Activate/Validate The LayerSlider, Slider Revolution or Visual Composer Plugins?

Very simply put…you can’t because you didn’t buy it.

The way it works on ThemeForest is when a plugin is included for free with a theme you can use the plugin for free without any issues, but if you want update and support from the plugin developer you need to purchase it separately (optional).

The plugin will work just 100% without the purchase code and if you ever need to update it please see this FAQ entry regarding updating plugins.

This is NOT an issue and you shouldn’t be worried. The plugins included will work even without a purchase code entered.

I am having WordPress 3.9+ Issues/Problems, How Do I Fix Them?

If you are using WP 3.9 make sure to update the Thunder theme and the Visual Composer plugin. Very Important!

Thunder Changelog: http://www.wpexplorer.com/changelogs/thunder/

Updating Plugins: http://themeforest.net/item/thunder-responsive-multipurpose-theme/5466969/faqs/19596

After updating you MUST clear your browser cache, because the Visual Composer is a javascript driven plugin if you don’t clear your cache then your browser might be loading the old javascript and it can cause weird stuff to happen.

How do I update the included plugins?

Whenever I update a plugin I will make mention of it on the changelog. You may not see an auto notice in your WP dashboard or you won’t be able to update automatically if you do. That is because you didn’t actually purchase the plugin so you can not receive auto updates (due to ThemeForest license).

All the plugins are found in the theme’s plugins folder. So if you download the latest version and extract it you’ll see a folder called “plugins” and all the most recent plugin zips in there. Simply delete the plugin from your site and re-upload or extract and override the files via FTP (easier).

But actually the easiest way to update is by updating your theme, all the plugins will be updated within the theme. Then delete the plugin from your site. You should then see the notice again to install it at the top of the dashboard and install it. This will then install the latest version located within the theme. Here is a video example – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlGC6yp_mpk

Of course the plugins are really affordable so depending what your time is worth, purchasing the plugin to enable auto updates and receive extra support from the plugin seller may be the best solution and I personally highly recommend it.
