Common WordPress Installation Issues

Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a “Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Changelog?

View the theme changelog here: http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/changelog/

Are there any Video Tutorials?

Yes! I will be adding video tutorials on my Youtube playlist – https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMGCosyDx4aqiPFpdRKROLW9XnT_J4-y4

Why can’t I upload/install the theme?

Please first see the guide on installing the theme: http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/how-to-install-your-theme/

This theme is fairly larger then most themes out there due to all the included plugins. If you are having troubles installing it is most likely due to your server memory limit.

If it’s a memory limit error you will generally get an error such as “Are you sure you want to do this?”.

These are my suggestions in order of what I think is best:

1. Contact your host to see if they can increase your memory limit to at least 128M and then try re-uploading the theme.

2. Increase your memory limit yourself – http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP

3. The largest portion of the theme is the plugins folder. If you want you can unzip the theme, locate the “plugins” folder and remove all the plugin zips (move them to your desktop so you can install them later – only remove the zips though there are important files in there that are needed), then re-zip and upload the theme. It should be much smaller now and install just fine!

4. As a last resort you can always upload your theme via FTP, I don’t recommend this on most servers though because some servers have issues with file permissions which would require you to also have to fix up file permissions.

Why can’t I install the included plugins?

If you can’t install the plugins automatically it’s most likely due to strict server/user permissions. What I would recommend is simply extracting the theme on your computer and uploading the plugins as you normally would.

All the plugins will be inside the “plugins” folder once the theme zip has been extracted.

How can I make my site look like the live demo?

The sample data .xml file is included. You need to download the full package and extract it and it’s inside the “Sample Data” folder. I usually recommend and most developers do this…to create a localhost WordPress installation and upload the sample data there so you can see how the theme works locally then build the live site from scratch so you don’t have any extra “stuff” in there.

If you do want to import the Sample Data to a live site, keep in mind it’s fairly massive so I would recommend importing without the images (you would change these anyway), so it imports quick and doesn’t bring your server “to its knees”.

Also you can always see the code for the pages here – https://github.com/wpexplorer/total-sample-pages – you can copy/paste the code for any page into “text” mode in the page/post editor then switch over to the Visual Composer.

How do I upload Sample Data?

How can I recreate a sample page from the demo?

You can upload the whole sample data .xml file or the best way is to check out this public repository with all the sample pages – https://github.com/wpexplorer/total-sample-pages – so you can easily copy and paste them onto your site.

Simply go to “Classic” mode in the editor (so not the visual composer editor) then click on “Text” and paste the dummy data there. Then you can switch back to the Visual Composer mode.

The Sample Data is taking too long to upload (or it won’t upload), how can I make it faster?

The theme is really large so the Sample Data is also large. My suggestion would be to install WordPress locally and load the sample data there. This should download/upload much quicker then on a live server.

Now you can work with the theme locally and make edits much much quicker. Once your site is ready, push it to the live server.

Especially when working on client sites, you should ALWAYS work locally. It will save you a lot of time.

If you can’t work locally, my suggestion would be to try increasing your server memory limit – http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP – and see if that helps.

As a last resort you can always upload the sample data and choose to not import any attachments. This way none of the images will be uploaded to your server and it will upload very very fast. You will be adding your own images anyway, so maybe it’s the best option ;)

How do I setup my homepage, it looks like a blog!

By default WordPress always shows latest posts on the front-page, this is how WordPress works. If you imported the sample data and want to setup one of the homepages from the sample data or simply want to define your own homepage on the front page, please do the following:

I didn’t import sample data:

  • Create a new page
  • Add your content to the page
  • Publish
  • Browse to Settings -> Reading
  • For “Front page displays” select “A Static Page”
  • Choose the page created earlier for this setting
  • Posts page:” setting should be left blank because you can create your blog page using the “Blog” template.

I did import sample data:

  • Browse to Settings -> Reading
  • For “Front page displays” select “A Static Page”
  • Choose one of the pages imported with the sample data for this setting
  • Posts page:” setting should be left blank because you can create your blog page using the “Blog” template.

Tips for using W3 Total Cache

- turn minifying from auto to manual
- get on firefox, look for all .css files and .js files in page source
- add them .css files manually to w3tc minify list, save
- make a list of all .js files, minify all of them in the head with blocking except (plugins.js and layerslider.js)
- save/apply/clean cache

How can I make my theme SUPER fast?

The theme is already super well optimized for speed, but of course there are always more you can do, here are some tips (do at your own risk, if you mess something up its not covered in theme support because none of these are theme related):

  • If your host doesn’t have built-in cache you might want to use a plugin such as the W3 Total Cache plugin.
  • A CDN can really speed things up, if your host doesn’t have one built-in you might want to try one of these Free CDNs
  • I would also recommend you try the following minify plugin – http://wordpress.org/plugins/bwp-minify/ – I tested it with my theme and saw no issues, but its always good to test everything after you try it out especially if you have 3rd party plugins active.

How can I make background areas that display on scroll like Homepage #30?

The backgrounds don’t actually scroll, the way we’ve done it is we’ve created some row’s, set a minimum height and added a background. Here is the exact code from that page template if you want to insert it to a page (in text mode, not visual) then switch back to the composer mode and see how we did it – http://pastebin.com/Ns4ZHH03

How do I keep submenu items open in the custom menu widget when on a subitem page?

Add the following custom css to your site:

.widget_nav_menu .current-menu-ancestor ul {
    display: block;
}

What font is used for the logo in the demo?

How do I update the included plugins?

Please refer to the online documentation: http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/update-plugins/

How can I customize embeded videos?

This theme uses the WordPress oembed function for your videos so if you want to alter them, you’ll need to hook into that function, here is a great forum post explaining how to do so – Customizing Videos for WP Total Theme: I found a good article online with a custom function code in it that works for Total: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/adding-youtube-parameters-to-oembed-function

How can I change the date color in the Recent News Module?

Simply add the following CSS (and tweak the background hex value) to your child theme or the custom CSS field in the admin settings:

body .vcex-recent-news-date span.month { background: #000; }

How can I change the color of the testimonial slider bullets?

This would be done via adding some Custom CSS to your site (using a child theme or the custom CSS field in the admin settings).

Example CSS:

/*non active*/
body .flex-control-nav li a {
 background: #000 !important;
}
/*active*/
body .flex-control-nav li a.flex-active {
 background: #000 !important;
}

How can I alter my category layout?

The category layout can be altered in the theme panel under the blog tab but also on a per-category basis if you want – http://cl.ly/image/1z3P2o0u0S39 – you can choose between the different blog layouts, columns, pagination and so forth.

Blog Issues:
Why won’t any of the page options work for my blog and why does the title display the first post title and not the page title?

If you are having these issues it’s because the blog template wasn’t setup as mentioned in the documentation.

Your blog page is using both the blog template and you also have your posts page defined to the same page under Settings->Reading. That means you aren’t actually using the blog template. To fix go to Settings->Reading and for the option that reads “Posts page” leave it blank (Select).

If you continue having issues please let me know!

Why aren’t my icons working?

This could be an issue with @font-face not loading correctly on your server. Try creating a .htaccess file in your theme’s “fonts” folder with the code below:

<FilesMatch ".(ttf|otf|eot|woff)$">
  <IfModule mod_headers.c>
    Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*"
  </IfModule>
</FilesMatch>

Why can’t I activate the Visual Composer and other included Plugins?

Very simply put…because you didn’t buy it.

The way it works on ThemeForest is when a plugin is included for free with a theme you can use the plugin for free without any issues, but if you want update and support from the plugin developer you need to purchase it separately (optional). The plugin will work just fine without the purchase code and if you ever need to update it please see this FAQ – http://themeforest.net/item/total-responsive-multipurpose-wordpress-theme/6339019/faqs/19682

Activating Visual Composer If you have purchased the visual composer you can still activate it, but you’ll need to go to the Visual Composer tab in the theme panel and disable the option that reads “Run Visual Composer In Theme Mode”. Then go to Settings->Visual Composer to activate it. Now you’ll get access to auto updates and direct support from the Visual Composer author.

But the Plugin Still Works & Updates! This doesn’t mean you don’t get access to the plugin or updates. The plugin will still work 100% exactly the same and you can still update it as described in the other FAQ here – http://themeforest.net/item/total-responsive-multipurpose-wordpress-theme/6339019/faqs/19682

How can I translate the “All” text in portfolio, staff, testimonials and blog filters?

Easy! This is an option in the composer module.

Example: http://wpexplorer.s3.amazonaws.com/themeforest-assets/faqs/filter-all-text.png

If you don’t see this, you probably have to update your theme.

How can I link my logo to another page besides my Homepage?

Easy! You can use the built-in “wpex_logo_url” filter in your child theme to alter the logo url location.

Example (paste and edit in your child theme’s functions.php):

function my_custom_logo_url() {
    return 'wpexplorer.com';
}
add_filter( 'wpex_logo_url', 'my_custom_logo_url' );

How can I translate items in the Theme Panel, such as the top bar content?

You have 2 options:

1. Use WPML to translate the values in the wp_options table – https://wpml.org/faq/translating-entries-in-wp_options/
2. Or use the built-in shortcode like such:

[wpml_translate lang=es]Hola[/wpml_translate]
[wpml_translate lang=en]Hello[/wpml_translate]

Why can’t I see the Visual Composer when switching to it in the editor?

Sometimes the page settings metabox loads above the Visual Composer and this is the most likely reason. Simply drag it up so it’s above these options and easier to access.

http://cl.ly/image/3e1i1f3l3h0U

Can you add “blank” social option to the top bar?

The social icons in the top bar are font icons so they are dependent on FontAwesome. I am more then happy to add any missing social services, but they must be available for use by that icon font set – http://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/

But you can use the filter “wpex_social_options” to add more options, example:

function my_add_social_options( $array ) {
    $array['apple'] = '';
    return $array;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_social_options', 'my_add_social_options' );

This would be code to add to a child theme’s functions.php file and “apple” would be the social option/font-awesome icon.

TIP: You can always disable the Social output via the theme panel options and use the Social Alternative editor to add your own social icons and links.

How can I increase my Google Page Speed Score?

This theme is highly optimized for speed and with every update I try and make it even faster and more optimized. You can see my demo loads really fast even without any CDN or minifying – cool huh?

If you want to increase your Google Score this won’t be on the theme end, this is what you want to do:

To increase your Google score you have to:

1. Setup a CDN – this isn’t done via the theme.
2. Minify your scripts – this should be done via a plugin or sometimes the CDN can do this
3. Setup caching – some servers do this on their own such as what I use (WPEngine). But if your host doesn’t have built-in cache you need to use a plugin.
4. Smush your images – again not done by the them.

How can I center the images in the FlexSlider module and remove the automatic 100% width?

This would require a little CSS added to your site, example:

body .vcex-flexslider-entry-media img {
    width: auto !important;
    min-width: 0 !important;
    display: block !important;
    margin: 0 auto !important;
}

I don’t really recommend this (using larger images will look much nicer), but some people have asked me so I thought I would share ;)

How can I add Full-Width Content?

Adding full-width content is very easy and it’s mentioned in the included theme Documentation file under the “Building Pages + Visual Composer” section and the “Creating Full-Width Background Areas” subsection.

How can I remove Theme Panel Sections?

You can remove sections via your child theme using a custom function such as the one below ( Total v 1.53 required ).

Example:

function override_redux_array( $sections ) {
     unset( $sections['5'] ); // Remove the 5th section
    return $sections;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_redux_sections', 'override_redux_array' );

You can have a look in the parent theme at framework/redux/admin-config.php to see the default sections array.

Have fun!

How can I completely disable a custom post type (portfolio, staff, testimonials) via my child theme!

Easy…since version 1.33 you can remove it from the array of active post types like such:

// Function to disable custom post types
function wpex_disable_post_type( $array ) {
    unset($array['portfolio']); // Remove portfolio
    unset($array['staff']); // Remove staff
    unset($array['testimonials']); // Remove testimonials.
    return $array;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_theme_post_types', 'wpex_disable_post_type' );

If you remove any custom post type via your child theme it will also remove it from the theme options and prevent any code associated with that custom post type to load on the site. Sweet!

How can I center content when using the Full-Screen post/page layout?

This is very simple, simply click to edit your row and check the box to center it like this: http://cl.ly/image/1D2C3l1n3a1l

How do I use the Revolution Slider Plugin?

Full documentation for the Revolution Slider is included with your purchase, make sure to download the main zip that includes documentation and extract it. You’ll find the docs inside the “Documentation” Folder.

Why do I see blank squares in my menu on mobile sizes?

This would happen if you setup a menu on the “Mobile Icons” menu area incorrectly -> http://cl.ly/image/0Q1l2p1S3O0Y

Please refer to the included documentation on how to setup the mobile icons menu area. Thanks!

How Can I keep my subitems visible always on the mobile nav?

Easy! Add this custom CSS to your site:

.sidr-class-dropdown-toggle { display: none; }
.sidr-class-dropdown-menu ul { display: block; }

Result: http://cl.ly/image/3s301Y1F2f02

How can I add a simple button into my posts without using the Visual Composer?

There is a built-in “theme-button” class which is used for buttons throughout the site and can be easily added to any link in your post editor.

http://cl.ly/image/0n3J3x120829

How can I link directly to any section on my site or FAQ?

See this youtube video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=885iaTNsOw0 – must be using at least version 1.34 of the theme.

How can I open a video or Google Map with lightbox?

It is very easy, simply add the classname “wpex-lightbox-video” to any link and it will work. If you are using the Single Image Visual Composer module then you would use the “Extra class name” field but instead enter “video-lightbox”.

This class supports only 3 different iframe types (youtube, vimeo, google maps). Examples below:

// YouTube
"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HKoqNJtMTQ"

// Vimeo
"http://vimeo.com/123123"

// Google Maps
"https://maps.google.com/maps?q=221B+Baker+Street,+London,+United+Kingdom&hl=en&t=v&hnear=221B+Baker+St,+London+NW1+6XE,+United+Kingdom"

How can I add the WPML Language switcher to my theme?

Easily, you can use the built-in shortcode to add it where you want. A good location might be the top bar content area.

The shortcode:

[wpml_lang_selector]

This will output the Language Switcher as defined int he WPML settings.

Here is an example adding it to the Top Bar:

Adding: http://cl.ly/image/04462J1g2o1k
Result: http://cl.ly/image/1d3J2b1E2h00

Why cant I automatically update the Visual Composer Plugin by WPBakery?

Auto update notices in the admin are generally for Free themes/plugins hosted on WordPress.org. However, some developers add their own system, as I have for my Total theme.

Why not for the Visual Composer? Simply put, because you didn’t buy it. Because the plugin is included for free with the theme I can’t legally offer automatic updates for it because that would involve hosting it on a 3rd party server which violates ThemeForest licensing.

If you want automatic updates for the Visual Composer plugin you must purchase it and then disable the following option in the theme panel – http://cl.ly/image/2J2Z1E0c3P3Z

Where Can I find a list of available theme filters?

How can I make this theme into a one-page site where you can click an item in the menu and it will scroll down to that section rather then going to a page?

Please refer to the included HTML documentation file under the heading “Local Scroll Menu”.

How can I disable the Mobile menu and display the standard menu on mobile?

You can do this really easily via your child theme. First add some custom CSS like this:

#mobile-menu { display: none !important;}
#site-navigation-wrap { display: block !important; }

You should also disable the whole mobile menu so you aren’t adding redundant code, you can do this via a function in your child theme:

function wpex_mobile_menu() {
// Don't add the mobile menu in the first place
return;
}

How can I add my languages into my child theme?

Very easy, please have a look at the guide on WordPress.org – http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/load_child_theme_textdomain

So basically you just have to add your languages into your child theme and then use (add to your child theme’s functions.php) the following function to load it from the child theme instead of the parent:

add_action( 'after_setup_theme', 'my_child_theme_setup' );
function my_child_theme_setup() {
    load_child_theme_textdomain( 'my_child_theme', get_stylesheet_directory() . '/languages' );
}

Why Is The Visual Composer Extension built-in to version 1.4 of the Total Theme?

  • You only need to keep the Total theme up to date, making it easier to keep track of updates
  • All functions and assets are in the theme making it possible to share between the theme and the extensions better
  • All extension shortcodes can now be translated using the theme .po/.mo files
  • People were often updating only the extension plugin and not the theme causing issues/bugs. This prevents that issue.
  • Prevents other authors from stealing my code – which has been done quite a bit already unfortunately :(
  • And many other reasons!

Why is my logo so small?

The default Header height for the theme is only 40px because the default logo is fairy small. To increase your logo height simple increase or remove the custom header height in the theme panel – http://cl.ly/image/0t0J403e1g10

How can I change the portfolio, staff, blog grid js filter buttons color?

Use the theme options here: http://cl.ly/image/3K0m1v2d3a2f

How can I open a video with lightbox using the Button 2 module?

All you have to do is add the classname “wpex-lightbox-video” to the link classes – http://cl.ly/image/1z1X0h1h0T1K

ps: This will only work with youtube, vimeo, google maps

How can I change the search placeholder text in the header?

You can use the filter “wpex_search_placeholder_text” in your child theme to change this (must be using Total version 4.1 or greater).

Example:

function my_search_placeholder() {
return __( 'Your custom text', 'wpex' );
}
add_filter( 'wpex_search_placeholder_text', 'my_search_placeholder' );

How can I disable the main page header/title?

How can I change the “bars” in the mobile menu toggle link to something else (this is the square with bars that you click to open/close the mobile menu)?

Use the filter “wpex_mobile_menu_open_button_text”. Example:

function my_alter_mobile_menu_toggle( $return ) {
   return 'Example';
}
add_filter( 'wpex_mobile_menu_open_button_text', 'my_alter_mobile_menu_toggle' );

You might have to also add some custom CSS afterwards to match your edit.

How can I add my translated files into my Child theme?

Add the following code to your child theme’s functions.php and then put your .mo and .po files in your child theme’s “languages” folder (you might have to create this).

add_action( 'after_setup_theme', 'my_child_theme_setup' );
function my_child_theme_setup() {
    load_child_theme_textdomain( 'wpex', get_stylesheet_directory() . '/languages' );
}

Don’t forget to open the files and change the Sources Paths ( ../ and ../../Total/ )

How can I change the default title meta tag?

All you need to do is override the default wpex_meta_title() function in your child theme. Below is a basic example:

function wpex_meta_title() { ?>
     <title><?php wp_title('|'); ?></title>
<?php }

How can I remove the overlay over the page header backgrounds?

Add this custom CSS to your site:

body .background-image-page-header-overlay { display: none; }

How can I display the queries and memory usage on the front end for troubleshooting?

Easy! Add the following function into your child theme:

function my_display_queries( $array ) {
    $array['helpers']['display_queries_memory'] = true;
    return $array;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_global_config', 'my_display_queries' );

How can I change the icon in the Toggle Bar toggle (the plus)?

Copy this code into your child theme’s functions.php

function wpex_toggle_bar_btn() {
        if ( !wpex_toggle_bar_active() ) {
            return;
        }
        echo '<a href="#" class="toggle-bar-btn fade-toggle '. wpex_option( 'toggle_bar_visibility' ) .'"><span class="fa fa-plus" /></a>';
    }

Then edit the fa-plus class to match another font icon class – http://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/icons/ – or delete the entire span and add some text if you prefer.

How can I change my layout on any page, archive, category, post…etc?

By default you can change your default layout for most sections of the site via the theme options as well as in the page settings on a per-page basis, however, if you want greater control Total has a nice hook called “wpex_post_layout_class” that will allow you to set the layout for anywhere on your site and it will override any theme or meta options! Here is an example:

function my_fullwidth_homepage( $class ) {
    // Make the front-page have a full-width layout
    if ( is_front_page() ) {
        return 'full-width';
    } else {
        return $class;
    }
}
add_filter( 'wpex_post_layout_class', 'my_fullwidth_homepage' );

Available options: full-width, full-screen, left-sidebar, right-sidebar

How can I change the Next/Previous links for posts?

Important: Version 1.52 required

You can easily override these via your child theme. By default they display the post title ‘%title’.

// Change previous post link text to 'Prev'
function my_custom_prev_post_link_title() {
    return __( 'Prev', 'wpex' );
}
add_filter( 'wpex_prev_post_link_title', 'my_custom_prev_post_link_title' );

// Change next post link text to 'next'
function my_custom_next_post_link_title() {
    return __( 'Next', 'wpex' );
}
add_filter( 'wpex_next_post_link_title', 'my_custom_next_post_link_title' );

How can I disable the Header on any page, archive, category?

There are already built-in options via the custom fields and the admin panel for this, but if you prefer to do so via a child theme you can do so like this:

function my_disable_header( $return ) {
    // Disable header on the homepage
    if ( is_front_page() ) {
        return false;
    } else {
        return $return;
    }
}
add_filter( 'wpex_display_header', 'my_disable_header' );

How can I re-order the social sharing links?

  • Version 1.52+ required

You can alter the social sharing links by using a custom filter. Example for your child theme:

function my_custom_social_sharing_sites( $array ) {
    return array(
        'twitter'        => 'Twitter',
        'facebook'        => 'Facebook',
        'google_plus'    => 'Google Plus',
        'pinterest'        => 'Pinterest',
        'linkedin'        => 'LinkedIn',
    );
}
add_filter( 'wpex_social_sharing_sites', 'my_custom_social_sharing_sites' );

Simple move the items around in the array. Then go to your theme panel and re-save your settings to register the new array order.

How can I create re-usable templates with the Visual Composer?

How could I add a searchbar into the navigationbar?

Below is a ample function to add in your child theme’s functions.php file which places a searchbar in your header:

// Function for adding a searchbar into your navigation
// Place this function in your child theme's functions.php
function add_search_to_header() { ?>
    <form role="search" method="get" class="my-custom-searchform" action="<?php echo esc_url( home_url( '/' ) ); ?>">
        <input type="search" class="field" name="s" value="<?php _e( 'search', 'wpex' ); ?>" onfocus="if(this.value==this.defaultValue)this.value='';" onblur="if(this.value=='')this.value=this.defaultValue;" />
    </form>
<?php }
add_filter( 'wpex_hook_main_menu_bottom', 'add_search_to_header' );

Now you just have to add some custom CSS to style it and place it how you want it ;)

How can I change the color of the main buttons (search, contact form, password protection) on the theme?

Go to Theme Options -> Styling and under the “Button & Links” alter the colors for the “Theme Button”: http://cl.ly/image/1T1e1E311P1C

How can I customize the theme’s viewport meta?

Easy! You can do this by adding a custom function to your child theme’s functions.php like this:

function my_custom_viewport() { ?>
<meta name="viewport" content="initial-scale=1, maximum-scale=1, user-scalable=no">
<?php }
add_filter( 'wpex_meta_viewport', 'my_custom_viewport' );

How can I position the WooCommerce Category names under the image instead of over the image in the black background?

Easy add some custom CSS like this to your child theme or the custom css field in the admin panel:

body .products .product-category h3 {
position: inherit;
color: #777;
background: none;
top: auto;
left: auto;
}

How can I change the default color of the prices for WooCommerce products, widgets and cart?

Here is an example CSS for that:

/*make product pricing color black*/
body .product_list_widget .amount,
body div.product p.price,
body .product_list_widget .amount,
body td.product-price span.amount,
body td.product-subtotal span.amount, body #order_review span.amount,
body .cart-collaterals .cart_totals .amount {
    color: #000;
}

That would go in your child theme style.css (preferably) or the custom CSS field in the theme options panel. And you would just alter the #000 HEX color to the color of your choice.

Why won’t my Visual Composer work? It just shows a loading symbol.

How can I add support for the Portfolio Post Type To JetPack Publicize?

Easy, you can add this custom function to your child theme’s functions.php file:

function portfolio_add_publicize() {
$args['supports'] = array( 'title', 'editor', 'excerpt', 'thumbnail', 'comments', 'custom-fields', 'revisions', 'publicize’ )
}
add_filter( 'wpex_portfolio_args', 'portfolio_add_publicize' );

Notice that ‘publicize’ was added into the support array.

The ‘wpex_portfolio_args’ filter hooks into the arguments for register_post_type function for the portfolio – http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/register_post_type – so you can actually change anything ;)

How can I add the main meta options (hide title, custom page background, layout options..etc) to custom post types added by other plugins or custom post types registered in a child theme?

You can do so easily via a custom function added to your child theme. Here is an example:

function add_meta_to_post_types( $array ) {
    $array[] = 'gallery';
    return $array;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_main_metaboxes_post_types', 'add_meta_to_post_types' );

Simply replace ‘gallery’ with the post type you want to add it to. You can add it to multiple post types by duplicating $array[] = ‘gallery’; and changing the “gallery” part for each post type you want the meta options added to.

Please keep in mind though, that as awesomely coded Total is, it’s possible some or all meta-options will not be compatible with your post type due to the way that post type or plugin has been coded. That’s one reason why the meta-boxes aren’t automatically jammed into every custom post type.

Why can’t I use the Visual Composer on posts, portfolio items, staff items, products…etc?

You can! It’s probably just disabled in the Visual Composer settings: http://cl.ly/image/0Y293z422v0E

How can I use a custom menu for a specific area of my site?

You can do this easily via a child theme using the built-in “wpex_custom_menu” filter. Example:

// Use menu with ID 60 for the staff posts
function my_custom_menu() {
    if( is_singular( 'staff' ) ) {
        return '60';
    }
}
add_filter( 'wpex_custom_menu', 'my_custom_menu' );

How can I add more items into the sidr mobile menu?

In version 1.52 I added a new filter “wpex_mobile_menu_source” so you can easily add more items to the mobile menu or re-arrange the current ones – sweet!

See the core function at framework/core-functions.php, it looks like this:

if ( !function_exists( 'wpex_mobile_menu_source' ) ) {
    function wpex_mobile_menu_source() {
        $array = array();
        $array['sidrclose'] = '#sidr-close';
        $array['nav'] = '#site-navigation';
        $array['search'] = '#mobile-menu-search';
        $array = apply_filters( 'wpex_mobile_menu_source', $array );
        return implode( ', ', $array );
    }
}

How to add a new item

Wow that is cool, but how can I add more items to it in my child theme? We’ll that’s easy, just add a similar function to the one below in your child theme’s functions.php:

function my_add_to_mobile_menu( $array ) {
$array['my-custom-id'] = '#my-custom-id';
return $array;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_mobile_menu_source', 'my_add_to_mobile_menu' );

Of course replace “my-custom-id” with the ID of the element you want to add. This would be an element on the site.

How can I remove an item?

Easy! Just use the PHP unset function, here is an example:
function my_remove_items_from_mobile_menu( $array ) {
// Remove the search functionality from the mobile sidr
unset($array['search']);
return $array;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_mobile_menu_source', 'my_remove_items_from_mobile_menu' );

How can I open the sidr mobile menu from the right instead of the left?

Important In version 1.5.4 I added a new option to the theme options panel so you can choose this right in the admin!

Add this function to your child theme’s functions.php:

function my_edit_localize_array( $array ) {
    $array['sidrSide'] = 'right';
    return $array;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_localize_array', 'my_edit_localize_array' );

Important: Must be using version 1.53 or greater of the Total Theme.

How can I change the main site layout for any page or section of my site?

You can do it easily via your child theme, here is an example function:

function my_boxed_posts( $layout ) {
    // Make the single posts have a boxed layout
    if (  is_singular( 'post' ) ) {
        return 'boxed';
    } else {
        return $layout;
    }
}
add_filter( 'wpex_main_layout', 'my_boxed_posts' );

How can I create a transparent header like the header style 4 demo?

Easy! Just go to your page and select to enable the header overlay from the meta options like this: http://cl.ly/image/0m240O0D1s2u

You must have either the no-sidebar or the full-screen layout selected for the page.

Example: http://totaltheme.wpengine.com/base/header-style-4/

How can I show a different sidebar on an area of my site?

There is a built-in function for creating custom sidebar areas – http://cl.ly/image/2W2D3F0K3u1l – Once you add a custom widget area you can select it on any page/post – http://cl.ly/image/1z1z3i0f1G1h

If you want something more advanced I have added a very useful filter ‘wpex_get_sidebar’ so you can display any sidebar on any area of the site. Here is an example of a custom function to add to your child theme:

function my_custom_sidebar( $sidebar ) {
// Show a different sidebar on categories
if ( is_category() ) {
$sidebar = 'YOUR WIDGET AREA ID';
}
return $sidebar;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_get_sidebar', 'my_custom_sidebar' );

How can I alter the related blog posts query?

How can I add more styles to the Formats->Total Styles dropdown?

Below is an example of how you can hook into this dropdown and add more items to the array.

function my_new_formats_items( $items ) {
    $items[] = array(
        'title'        => __( 'Fancy Image', 'wpex' ),
        'selector'    => 'img',
        'classes'    => 'image-fancy',
    );
    $items[] = array(
        'title' => __( 'Blue Color Button', 'wpex' ),
        'selector'    => 'a',
        'classes'    => 'color-button blue',
    );
    return $items;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_tiny_mce_formats_items', 'my_new_formats_items' );

How can I make my search results page look like my blog?

In version 1.54 I added a new filter “wpex_search_results_style” so you can alter the search results page via a child theme. Here is an example to add to your child theme functions.php

function my_custom_search_style() {
    return 'blog';
}
add_filter( 'wpex_search_results_style', 'my_custom_search_style' );

Why is the JetPack mosaic, tiles, carousel, galleries not working?

By default the theme has a custom output for your image galleries, so all you have to do is disable it in order for the JetPack functionality to work: http://cl.ly/image/3r1B293J1547

How can I remove the fade-in affect of the main menu?

The delay of the hover is due to the javascript. See total/js/global.js

// Main superfish menu without supersubs
$('ul.sf-menu').superfish({
    delay: 100,
    //animation: {opacity:'show', height:'show'},
    animation: { opacity: 'show' },
    speed: 'fast',
    speedOut: 'fast',
    cssArrows: false,
    disableHI: false
});

What you can do is add a little function to your child theme’s functions.php to destroy it. Example:

function my_destroy_menu_superfish() { ?>
<script>
(function($) {
    "use strict";
    $(document).ready(function (){
        $('ul.sf-menu').superfish('destroy');
    });
})(jQuery);
</script>
<?php }
add_action( 'wp_footer', 'my_destroy_menu_superfish', 20 );

How can I have a menu open dropdowns to the left instead of the right?

Add the classname “left-dropdowns” to the parent menu item. Example: http://cl.ly/image/2t2m1l0R1u30

How can I alter my related portfolio items to display only items included in the first category of the current post?

Since I added the filter “wpex_related_portfolio_args” you can easily tweak the query! Below is an example function to add to your child theme’s functions.php file. Have fun!

function my_tweak_portfolio( $args ) {
    // Get first category
    $first_cat_id = '';
    $terms = wp_get_post_terms( get_the_ID(), 'portfolio_category' );
    if ( ! empty( $terms ) && isset( $terms[0] ) ) {
        $first_cat_id = $terms[0]->term_id;
    }
    // Alter the default tax_query
    $args['tax_query'] = array (
        array (
            'taxonomy'        => 'portfolio_category',
            'field'            => 'id',
            'terms'            => array($first_cat_id),
            'operator'        => 'IN',
        ),
    );
    // Return args
    return $args;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_related_portfolio_args', 'my_tweak_portfolio' );

How can I add more social options for the Staff social options?

Easy! I added a filter in version 1.5.4 called “wpex_staff_social_array” that will allow you to alter the default array of social options which looks like this:

if ( ! function_exists( 'wpex_staff_social_array' ) ) {
    function wpex_staff_social_array() {
        $array = array(
            array (
                'key'            => 'twitter',
                'meta'            => 'wpex_staff_twitter',
                'icon_class'    => 'fa fa-twitter',
                'label'            => 'Twitter',
            ),
            array (
                'key'            => 'facebook',
                'meta'            => 'wpex_staff_facebook',
                'icon_class'    => 'fa fa-facebook',
                'label'            => 'Facebook',
            ),
            array (
                'key'            => 'google_plus',
                'meta'            => 'wpex_staff_google-plus',
                'icon_class'    => 'fa fa-google-plus',
                'label'            => 'Google Plus',
            ),
            array (
                'key'            => 'dribbble',
                'meta'            => 'wpex_staff_dribbble',
                'icon_class'    => 'fa fa-dribbble',
                'label'            => 'Dribbble',
            ),
            array (
                'key'            => 'linkedin',
                'meta'            => 'wpex_staff_linkedin',
                'icon_class'    => 'fa fa-linkedin',
                'label'            => 'Linkedin',
            ),
            array (
                'key'            => 'skype',
                'meta'            => 'wpex_staff_skype',
                'icon_class'    => 'fa fa-skype',
                'label'            => 'Skype',
            ),
            array (
                'key'            => 'email',
                'meta'            => 'wpex_staff_email',
                'icon_class'    => 'fa fa-envelope',
                'label'            => __( 'Email', 'wpex' ),
            ),
            array (
                'key'            => 'website',
                'meta'            => 'wpex_staff_website',
                'icon_class'    => 'fa fa-external-link-square',
                'label'            => __( 'Website', 'wpex' ),
            ),
        );
        return apply_filters( 'wpex_staff_social_array', $array );
    }
}

This is located at framework/core-functions.php

So now you can add new options via your child theme by using a custom function such as this one:

// Add new social options for staff members
function my_add_new_staff_social_options( $array ) {
    $array[] = array (
                'key'            => 'instagram',
                'meta'            => 'wpex_staff_instagram', // The meta ID
                'icon_class' => 'fa fa-instagram', // The FontAwesome class (or any class if you want to use another icon set)
                'label' => __( 'Instagram', 'wpex' ), // Label for the alt and link title
    );
    return $array;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_staff_social_array', 'my_add_new_staff_social_options' );

You can find a list of all the icon classes available here: http://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/icons/

By extending the social options you will not only add the setting to the post settings so you can enter your URL it will also automatically be shown on the front-end when displaying the staff social links – sweet!

Why do I get a stylesheet is missing error when trying to install my ThemeForest theme?

You’ll get this error if you try uploading the entire zip with the docs, sample data…etc. You’ll need to either extract that zip you have an locate just the installable theme zip – Total.zip or go to your ThemeForest downloads and download only the “installable zip file” as shown in this GIF: http://cl.ly/image/0c3j2g1w2v1e

How can I keep the custom menu widget items expanded always?

Add this custom CSS to your site:

/* display subs */
.widget_nav_menu .current-menu-ancestor ul {
    display: block;
}
/* hide the arrow */
#main .widget_nav_menu .parent > a:after {
    display: none;
}

How can I add custom Font Options to the Typography font family dropdowns?

Easy, you can add a custom function in your child theme that returns an array of your fonts like such:

function wpex_add_custom_fonts() {
    return array( 'My Custom Font' );
}

Result: http://cl.ly/image/2j1T0p383j28

Important: This will only work on version 1.6.0 and greater. Also, this only adds the Font Family to the drop-down you must also load the correct CSS and font files for your font via your child theme

How can I change the logo image URL for a specific page, post or section of my site?

You can do this using the “wpex_header_logo_img_url” filter in your child theme via a custom function. Example:

function my_header_logo_img_url( $logo_img ) {
    // Change url for the homepage only
    if ( is_home() ) {
        return 'YOUR CUSTOM URL';
    }
    // Return the theme options defined logo img url
    else {
        return  $logo_img;
    }
}
add_filter( 'wpex_header_logo_img_url', 'my_header_logo_img_url' );

Important: This will only work in Total version 1.6.0 or greater!

How can I display a specific slider at the top of a section on my site or multiple pages/posts without having to add it manually to each?

You can do this via the “wpex_post_slider_shortcode” filter by adding a custom function in your child theme.

function my_custom_slider( $slider ) {
    // Display the "test" revolution slider for all posts
    if ( is_singular( 'post' ) ) {
        return '[rev_slider test]';
    } else {
        return $slider;
    }
}
add_filter( 'wpex_post_slider_shortcode', 'my_custom_slider' );

Important: Requires Total version 1.6.0 or greater!

How can I add the fixed header class to the overlay style header?

The fixed header is disabled by default on the overlay style for several reasons, but it can be re-added.

First have a look at framework/header-functions.php here you’ll find the wpex_header_classes function so you can see how classes are added to the header wrap. You will notice the fixed_scroll class is unset when the header overlay is enabled, so you can re-add it via a child theme like such:

function my_add_fixed_class_to_header_overlay( $classes ) {
    $classes['fixed_scroll'] = 'fixed-scroll';
    return $classes;
}
add_filter( 'wpex_header_classes', 'my_add_fixed_class_to_header_overlay' );

That will add the fixed class, you will then have to tweak the CSS a bit though (add custom css to your child theme) to make it look the way you want.
