Is it straight simple enough to add 4 slides instead of the current 3 to the front page and just go deeper instead of trying to fit within the set height?

It is simple. You can add as many as you like, but you need to change the size od tumbs to fit vertical, or it can be modified to show two tumbs in a row, or something like that.
