Sure you can assign to category page please.
Can you let me know how i can’t work this out in the back end. I’ve set up a new sidebar using the theme options but am not sure how I can assign it to anything other than a page. Thanks

You can add widgets to “Blog Sidebar” for that.

Please check. There are javascript conflicts between theme’s script and plugin’s script. Try to disable all plugins
