I notice lots of spam in the item comments today. How about just deleting users that leave spam for Via…, Lo…. Vuitt.. etc.?
I think this would be faster and more comfortable for everybody than manually reporting comments as spam and mods removing them manually.
By using a keyword filter you could quickly discover newly registered users that do nothng but leave spam.

This is my first post on the forums so let me introduce myself;
My name is Glenn Engelen and I’m a long time member of the envato marketplaces. I recently became an author and uploaded one theme to themeforest.
It’s now up for a 3 days but I’m getting a lot spam messages on the comments. I always report the spam messages but I’m starting to feel sorry for the staff that I bother with these reports…
Is it normal that I receive like 2/3 spam messages a day? Do you report these messages or do the staff automatically remove them?
I’m looking forward to upload more themes and getting to know the community better.

Is it me, or are there any other authors receiving spam comments in the product pages ? This is pretty annoying…

Yea I got maybe around 6 spam comments already in the past few days.. really annoying.
How about if a user gets a lot of reported comments (spam comments) in a day or two (maybe 3 reported comments), he can’t comment anymore and would need to contact support to validate his… humanity?
The spam comments I got had a lot of URLs and dollar signs, maybe that can be a temporary back-end comment filter for the meantime

Please continue to report spam comments to support – they’re on it!

Well, you kinda have two choices:1. Deal with spam filtering manually (FREE solution
)2. Pay to have Akismet handle it
Automatic spam filtering works by collectively monitoring all sites using the filtering software – since they have to pay for all the server bandwidth and processing that it takes to effectively filter spam for you, it makes sense that this is a paid service – it’s not just a standalone plugin that runs solely on your server – it’s the network of sites that makes it valuable, and centralizing that information and processing is expensive.
If you don’t want to deal with spam, paying Akismet is worth it.
Depending on the CAPTCHA plugin, it may not be blocking direct hits to the comment submission URL. I’ve been using Conditional CAPTCHA for WordPress, and found that it cut down on about 95% of the spam comments I was getting. Maybe try that one.
Another option would be to use something like Disqus.
Good luck!Awesome response! Thanks
I am going to try this out: Conditional CAPTCHA for WordPress
And Disquis yes have seen that, will it block 100% spam without any other plugin needed? I know it requires to register or login with social networks.Reason I cant use paid service is that, I have 2 clients want to stop this and they don’t want to pay for that at this moment. And I am sincere to them and trying to find a solution to their problem.
Please comment about about the above question I mentioned regarding Disquis. Thanks much!

I am reading a tutorial from WpTuts that says you can help stop spam by disabling access to the wp-comments.php file by adding this code to your htaccess file
If I look in the htaccess file, some of this is already in there or says something else. So should one just add the lines that aren’t in the file or change them? Here is the link to the tut http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/security/6-easy-and-efficient-ways-to-combat-spam-comments/<IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} POST RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} .wp-comments-post.php* RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !.*yourdomainname.* [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^$ RewriteRule (.*) ^http://%{REMOTE_ADDR}/$ [R=301,L] </IfModule> -

This spam is getting ridiculous now! I’ve reported at least 20 spam comments on 1 item alone. They seem to target all the front page items.
I like the idea of a new badge too!

I was browsing to see themes that exist/featured in the home page.. guess what? its amazed me that in every comments section of each item there is several chance (maybe 99% if the item is featured in home page) I see spam comments. Within this few minutes only, I reported more than 20+ spams! wow :))

I had some spam comments on my items from a new user, and flagged the comments, which were later removed.
