Shopping cart is live. But wait… where did the sales go?
You can’t just tell your tax office – hey my money came from Australian bank account, I will not pay VAT.
You can and you should and not because of australian bank but because of Envato is australian company, is registered in Australia and it is your one and only ‘client’.
As an author, as far as you are concerned, you are receiving the money from one entity: Envato. This entity is located in Australia. You will be required to pay your taxes, income tax and what have you. However, you do not have to pay VAT.
My accountant suggested that Envato was my only client and it made direct ecommerce with the purchasers, since I didn’t know the purchasers, I couldn’t collect their data, I couldn’t decide the price of my products etc.
I have the same info from two independent tax consultants. End of story.
@QuanticaLabs – so you need to pay those 16% income tax (in my country not sure in others) but regardless how much you manage to earn you still don’t have to pay VAT? That’s a bit strange. Here you need to pay VAT after you pass 65k euros or something like that.
These are two different things. You can be registered as VAT payer and be exempted from VAT to a certain threshold. But even if you are registered as VAT payer (regardless of the income) there is also reverse charge mechanism which applies to some transactions.
I do however have a huge question to @Collis. (Please allow him to reply if he sees the question, don’t send me your opinions because I can’t use your point of view as defense if the IRS ever asks questions ).
1. As things stand at the moment, should the authors pay VAT or any kind of taxes on the money they make on Envato Market?
2. What about when things will settle down with the new changes?PS: EU based author.
For EU based authors: as long as you get money transfer directly from Envato you do not have to pay VAT. You need to pay income tax.
Following on from the announcements and extensive conversation about Item Support on ThemeForest and CodeCanyon at the end of August, we’ve posted our new proposal on the Market Blog. Please check it out and use this forum thread for conversation.
Thank you stewboon, it sounds good (changes in the API too).
