Today I had one of the worst surprises in a long long while. I`ve told a client about my portfolio here and he immediately dumped me as far as the work goes. Here`s some of his feedback and after some further research mine.
Plagiarism. As long a plagiarism does NOT have direct consequence people will do it over and over again hoping that the author the`re copying from does not notice. I know that ideas will overlap here and there, it`s only natural. But blatant plagiarism should be banable. Refund to the customers might not be a bad idea also.
Weak quality. Especially on the logo section, although clearly visible on all sections. I know Envato is trying to compete with 99piecesofshit and get some potential clients from there, but this is still really bad. Potential customers have little faith in the site overall when sorting through 10 pages of useless shit to find what they need. Submitting a portfolio before being accepted as author might alleviate the problem somehow.
Ridiculous forums. “Hello I`m 21 years today”, Is Random country day”, “I got xxx sales”, etc. This is particularly offensive to the authors since the forums should be centered on design topics / staff announcements etc. I get so tired filtering through dozens of random useless topics. Personally this is the main reason I gave up on using the forums.
Very nice achievement.
I would not quit my full time job for a freelancer “job” though. After 10 years of design I found out that being part of a team is invaluable. The`re so many freelancers these days stuck in a office / at home working alone anywhere up to 12 hours a day. Maybe is just me, but exchanging ideas, brainstorming, socializing with fellow designers is too important, especially considering personal growth in this business.
Here`s my entry. Thank you.
On a scale of 1 to 10 of “freakin` awesome”, last one is 11.
P.S. Of to the market
Romanian law in regards to software and copyright is STUPID . You need to buy the software from Romania and have the receipt. If you buy the software from outside the country and use it here you are in breach of copyright laws. Why do you think the prices are so high ?
There is always a bad apple (sad moron who cannot read the readme file) but other than that buyers are generally fair. Sometimes is hard to be objective about your own files.
2 ways to look at this… Sometimes is accidental. Try this http://observatory.designobserver.com/entry.html?entry=4357
If plagiarism is intentional and can be proven I think Envato should do something about it.
This will look amazing in my office along with http://www.behance.net/Gallery/Periodic-Table-of-Typefaces/193759
I have attended a conference on design and one of the main talks was called “Fail. Try again. Fail better.” It was one of the most inspiring speeches I`ve ever heard, but I`m telling you the title said it all.
It is irrelevant weather the file was accepted or not as long as you make the best of it, and you get better at it.
