What about this… when a customer buys a theme, included in the price is a free subscription to support and updates for 1 year. After a year, if they wish to update their theme, they have to renew their subscription and pay a small fee.
@envato Please seriously consider the yearly subscription idea that includes support. This will be good both for authors and buyers. Many authors including myself could finally invest more time to upgrade their portfolio. The second year subscription can be %50 off. This will be encourage us to re-code or re-design our very old items rather than fixing for new browser or make it compatible for new WordPress versions. This is a win-win solution for all of us. I think buyers will be happy also when they see a big upgrade of the items they purchased years ago. From an author perspective you can not invest serious time to your old products that doesn’t sell anymore. I hope it make sense.
Lets take a step back: why can’t we simply make the entire purchase valid for 12 months? After that, the user has to purchase again for their license to be active. I think that makes the things very simple while not changing the rules? We all, including Envato, can learn from this small change.Am I crazy?
There must be only one package to purchase like: 1 Regular License + 1 Year Subscription for updates & support. With this way everyone will be happy.

Well thought improvement! I have a support team and know how it is important for buyers. I think most of the authors has no problems with this new rules.
I have some questions however; what if an author got sick and couldn’t work for 15 days? Will you add some exceptions for such cases? Will you block the item or author’s account when you got a complaint from a buyer?
