I’m unsure which one to use. I’ve always used [b] without giving it much thought, but I got across the issue when a client asked me why I had used [b] instead of [strong].
Is there any reason why I should use one or the other, other than [b] being shorter?
Had to replace the triangular brackets with square ones, as the forums wouldn’t render them correctly
b is a font-style tag that makes the text bold
strong is a “phrase tag” that “strong emphasis” the text, were for example em “emphasis” only
[PS] I hate formating on this forum, you can’t place links one under another,
Ah, oke. But for HTML rendering it doesn’t make a difference, right?
Yes, but for W3C standards it makes difference and only
<strong /> is accepted as a valid tag
b will change how the font is displayed, but because now we have css, the w3c recommends to use styles instead of b
strong will make the portion of text enclosed more important than the normal and the emphasis “em” part. This is important in the semantic web I’m sure that search engine crawlers gives more importance to a certain portion of the text on the page if is enclosed in those phrase tags.
The confusion appears because they do not change the importance only but also how the text looks, while b change only how the text looks. Don’t know why browser creators decided to apply this behavior to this tag, maybe they did not understood whats the purpose of the tag Who knows?
But, this semantic web is interesting to study, check this youtube videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjFjgIPXw_I
while you are at, look at the channel of those who posted that video, it has english section/playlist. http://www.youtube.com/user/keiouniversity#g/c/7D92E27B2B607317
They have very awesome videos that gives insight on the next computer technology in the next 20- 50 years, with some incredible stuff as applied quantum computers. Not to many people watch this channel unfortunately, people prefers looking at 10 hours of Nyan rainbow cat. Then one try to understand how nuclear disasters, oil spil polution, wars and other nice stuff can happen without no one cares about it. I got to the conclusion that if tomorrow a nuclear bomb will explode somewhere people reaction will be like. “meh, give me another cat video while I wait for the shock wave”
