Not a question of being lazy. To you may be obvious what to do with the zip package, but not to many people especially first time buyers. So, put yourself in their shoes…
The problem is that they cannot get to the Documentation, people have asked me “Where is the Documentation?...”.... So, I have to tell them that they need to extract the zip to get to the Documentation, hence back to my point … all these questions can be avoided…When you sell a package of some sort it is your responsibility to make sure the client understands how to install it or what to do with it. They can’t read your mind.
You are completely right. There are other Marketplaces (Templatemonster, etc.) which got a little bit other working system and deliver the files ready to upload. Still: I don’t ask anyone to read my mind and if Envato obviously doesn’t allow to rename files into *-UNZIP-FIRST.zip, I cannot handle this anyway. But is it overcharged to expect of buyers, who obviously could first deposit money on their PayPal account, than were computer affine enough to buy the theme and hopefully at least knew, that they’re buying a WordPress theme (so they should know what WordPress is, too) and not a complete website, to just UNZIP the file? To just try? To just look, if they missed something? To simply see what’s in there? To show a glimpse of initiative after they’ve payed 30-40 bucks? I personally don’t think so.
But I apologize, this is probably not the directory this thread should point to, so this probably is my last 2cents concerning the buyers
Enova saidI think TF renames the packages with the item name – so I think you are struggling for nothing
I already do this , i add UNZIP -FIRST_packagename…. but they always upload the whole extracted folder or the whole package.
Well maybe i’m the lucky one who doesn’t get the package renamed becouse when i check the website of buyer who says “the theme is not working i want a refund” or “why theme doesn’t work” etc.. etc… the path of the theme into the source of the page it’s UNZIP -FIRST_packagename…
(i always upload my themes here on tf using ftp)
Car and WP theme are not equal. Are they? You cant buy a car for $35. can you?If you ignore the customers, then they will ignore your theme for next time! Wont they? they will. At least I will.
Right, they’re not equal. I would rather show the car buyer how to drive it (but not buy him a license, of course ) than to show how to install the theme, because I will get for the car so much more money (call me egoistic) than for this theme. Also, I don’t mind if these buyers will ignore me for next themes (it would be even better for me and them, if so). They, who don’t know how to install a WordPress Theme but buy one, won’t know also how to follow me here on TF anyway, so what.
Also, don’t forget please, that most Themes have a good documentation attached, where installation is explained anyway. Buyer is too lazy to read? Not my problem. I don’t care about karma in this case, sorry. If support questions are theme related and logically and I see, that buyer at least has read the docs before contacting I’m glad to help and do my best. But, as I said, not in this (and, I must admit, some more cases, too) case.
I think it’s people like you that make it bad for others, I have bought 7 themes here at themeforest, and i was having trouble installing my first one, and the author of the theme helped me, and i did all the others the same.
But i would never buy a theme from you, you have no heart for other people and you sound like your just here to make money.
I think it is a good idea to make it easier for noobies, we all had to crawl at one time, before we called walk.
Sorry to bump a 2 month old thread but this needs to be addressed. I get on average 2-4 support queries a week where users are uploading the zip file they download from ThemeForest directly into WordPress. Of course they then get “stylesheet not found” error and assume my theme is to blame.
If the ThemeForest devs could just add -UNZIP FIRST ! to the end of the file download it would save all of us a great deal of time. I’m not exactly a huge author here, I imagine it must drive the bigger authors insane.
WOW ! I came here looking for installation instructions, and found out that the people making the products hate my noobie self. I know where I won’t be spending money anymore! And to the hater, use some of that money to learn how to write.
Really sad to see another topic that has not been picked up by envato for nearly a year now. The “broken theme” issue could be fixed with a tiny change to the review process, like internq7 suggested: RENAME THE DOWNLOAD FOLDER TO “UNZIP-FIRST…” or something. That’s a flick of a switch.
But, like many other issues (forum improvement, price changes, low quality items, plagiarism), envato doesn’t care about it and rather lets authors spend hours and hours of support.

I like what elegan* themes does – on the members page you got two links – theme pack & image sources – that makes it easy for the user to know what to download and upload.
Just my 2 cents.
