Too many useless plugins need to be installed.
Sorry to hear the bad experience. I found that couple of links in the documentation were pointing to the old support site URL of ours and needs updation - we moved from portfoliotheme.org/support to support.portfoliotheme.org to better handle the load on our servers. Will update the documentation to point the changed support site URL. The readm.txt file does provide the correct URL for video tutorial BTW, if you were missing the same. Rest of the URLs in the 50+ page documentation are valid.
Regarding the plugins - I am not sure which plugins you are referring to. Revolution Slider, Visual Composer and SiteOrigin page builder plugins are some of the most popular plugins that are being used by millions of WordPress users and hence I wouldn't fault the theme for recommending the same. Of course, beauty of plugins is that you are free to deactivate them if you do not need them. For example, if you are going to use VC, you can deactivate all SiteOrigin page builder plugins and you can remove VC if you plan to use SiteOrigin page builder. The theme runs fine even if these plugins are deactivated.
Hope you will revise the rating in future - 1 star for these issues is a little harsh IMO specially when we have an active support forum to assist you with annoyances like the above. Thank you.
