I like the template. It seems lightweight, really just made to have a personal blog. Has configuration options, but not too many and it really looks nice with some custom blocks that can be added as well. It is not complicate to use, works great out of the box. I would prefere so have color schemes available - it is basically a dark theme but as the dark theme is so well designed I decided to just use that as my main theme. Keep up the good work.

I was very excited to use Koala, and it is a beautiful, mobile-responsive template.

I rated it three stars however as the update process for the theme was difficult. For example, the built-in functionality to display code like JavaScript within the page content (I post code blocks on my site and this was one requirement i looked for in the CMS) was changed in updates, and instead of working gracefully when i updated to a new version I had to go back and change the way JavaScript code was displayed for every blog post. Another example is that the framework used to for image thumbnails (that opened the lightbox / overlay to show larger images) also was changed in an update so I had to manually change the syntax used to show images for every post once updating.

Likewise, certain functionality like displaying information in tabs also did not display visually correctly, to the point where i opened a bug and was told this is how it was supposed to display.

I took one star off for not upgrading gracefully (requiring users to manually change the way their posts were implemented every time the theme updates) is not a functional theme.

I took half a star off as the "site import" / "template" (ie. build a site with all the base content) did NOT work as easily as advertised and required multiple work arounds. I took another half a star off as part of my goal was for the site to be SEO friendly and perform well from a performance / site-load, but with each update performance was negatively impacted.

I will say that bug / ticket response was very good, almost always within 24 hours of posting the ticket and have to give the developer credit for that.

If you're looking for a mobile-responsive layout that doesn't use the code blocks or are happy to put in the time to re-do posts when you update the theme this theme will work for you. As for me the post-update changes needed were a non-starter and I eventually just switched to static HTML.

Hey nik7k7,

Thanks for your review and rating of Koala.

As with all continuously developing software on occasion features need improvement which can bring breaking changes. We do our best to communicate this to customers by making a change the the themes major version number (i.e version 2.0 to version 3.0) when this occurs, and always include detailed documentation about what changes have been made and how to accommodate them. The alternative to this is to not make any major improvements to the themes functionality over its lifetime, which we feel would be more detrimental than infrequent breaking changes. I can assure you this was not the case with 'every update' and updates are always optional - you can stay on the currently installed version if feature progression is of no interest.

As for Koalas demo import, this uses the default WordPress importer plugin, which is not developed by ourselves but the WordPress team. Therefore we have no control over the functionality of this plugin. Reviewing your support ticket regarding this, it seems you had issues with this plugin due to your server configuration and its limited permitted memory usage which caused the import to fail, this is one of the top frequently asked questions on the plugins description page, and you were advised on a work-around.

As for performance, Koala still performs great regardless of its update history, and still loads extremely quickly at its advertised speed of 0.6 seconds. Which can be seen here with a Pingdom speedtest taken at the time of writing this response.
