Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a "Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

How to update my theme?

Automatic updates:

For getting automatic updates you need to use Envato Market WordPress Plugin. Detailed instruction can be found on the plugin’s page.

Manual update:

  1. Login into your Themeforest account and go to downloads (Dashboad > Downloads)
  2. Download the theme into your computer. If you’ve downloaded only installable WordPress file then skip 2 and 3.
  3. Unzip the package
  4. In the unzipped folder you’ll find the file “vernissage.zip”
  5. Navigate to Dashboard -> Appearance -> Themes
  6. In the top left click on ‘Add new’ and download the new version
  7. Once uploaded click on ‘Replace current with uploaded’.

P.S You will not lose your theme settings or galleries/etc. If you modified original theme files, you can lose your modifications. Use child-theme if going to modify original files.

Migrating to version 2.0+

If you migrating to version 2.0+ from a lower version, after installing the new version you need to do the following.

Step 1:

Once the theme was activated, in the top of the screen you’ll see a notice. Please, follow the instructions. It’s important for future theme functioning.

Step 2 (recommended but not mandatory):

  • Install and activate Delete Thumbnails plugin by davidsword.
  • In WordPress admin panel navigate to Tools -> Delete Thumbnails and delete all resized images.

Step 3 (recommended):

  • Install and activate AJAX Thumbnail Rebuild plugin by junkcoder.
  • In WordPress admin panel navigate to Tools -> Rebuild Thumbnails and click on ‘rebuild all thumbnails’ button. Wait until plugin rebuild all thumbnails.
  • That’s all. Now your theme will use adaptive images. TopPic is the only photography theme on the market that use adaptive images.

After update you need to setup contact form (built-in contact form was removed). Use Contact Form 7 plugin or any other plugin.

All theme settings were moved into the native WordPress live customizer (Appearance -> Customize).

What will not be imported to new settings:

  • social profiles (Appearance -> Customizer -> Social Profiles)
  • default background image (option that was used as default background image for the whole website. Can be found in Appearance -> Customizer -> Backgound image)
