It can work with VC but the home pages can be built faster and easier with it

Shortcodes can work without VC but you can need to work much more a bit to make home pages like my demos, if you do not want to use VC :)

As I said above: perhaps, you did not setup correctly. All of other buyers did not meet the issue like you and I double checked my theme and it is still OK.
