Theme has not been updated for 1.5 yrs. Even though it says it will run with wordpress 4.8x, when we upgrade WP core, the site broke. We are not running ANY external plugins that would be in conflict.

Hello, sorry to see that you ran into an issue.
Eatery works well on WordPress 4.9.1 (the latest version of WordPress). We've tested this and we see it working without error.
