We work to reframe how we communicate environmental issues and to facilitate a growing dialogue about humanity’s everlasting footprint.
Reframing is Social Change:
While we feel with our hearts, we think with our brains. We have no other choice. Our perspective is therefore defined by mental frames that shape the way we see the world. Frames are like stories in our heads that inform the goals we seek, the plans we make, and the way we act. To change this, we need to change our frames. That is, reframing is social change.
When we successfully reframe the way we communicate environmental issues, we change the way the public views the environment. We change what counts as common sense. Everything that human beings understand about the environment is understood through frames.
Thinking Differently: Communication is the dominant tool that activates our frames so we need new communication to come up with new frames. Thinking differently requires communicating differently.
Reframing is not easy or simple. It is not a matter of finding a magic way to communicate. Reframing is more a matter of accessing what we and like-minded others already believe. It is about aligning our values to determine what we all think is important. It is about making our unconscious thinking conscious. It is about right and wrong. It is about being empathetic and then acting compassionately.
It doesn’t happen overnight. It is an on-going process. It requires repetition, focus, and dedication. The stories we speak about everyday and the way we talk about environmental issues really do matter.
