Scott Huelsman of The Huelsman Way
A native of Wisconsin, I began my career with the U.S. Air Force and spent four years maintaining digital flight simulators at Homestead Air Force Base, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1987. I then moved back to Wisconsin and attended UW-Milwaukee, earning a BS degree in the Environmental Sciences in 1991. Out of college, I accepted a project engineering position with Olin Corporation and helped manage environmental projects at the Badger Army Ammunition Plant near Baraboo, WI.
For all the science and technology, however, I also had a strong creative streak, and in 1995 started my own web/multimedia development company, partially to assist local Wisconsin companies but mainly to develop my own multimedia novel which I published in 1997. Today, I continue to develop web sites and applications for a diversity of Wisconsin clientele, I work full-time for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as their Division of Forestry webmaster, and I continue to dabble with interactive literature.
While I’ve seen my share of general website and application development projects since 1995, I specialize in content management systems (CMS). I built my first CMS to develop my own interactive novel back in 1997, created several content learning management systems that provided an educational as well as managerial component, and even developed a grandiose CMS for small businesses in 2003, a system that is still in use today. I really enjoy both content strategy as well as management and today specialize in DotNetNuke and Joomla.
But beyond the technology, what I love most about the profession is working with people and helping my clients achieve their web-based goals (especially when they don’t have a lot of time or money). While my professional journey has certainly been a challenging one, I’ve also had the good fortune of going WAY beyond where most web developers go, and I sincerely enjoy the opportunity to share my expertise, make recommendations, provide mentoring and develop sites and solutions that allow my clients to be more productive and efficient. Through these experiences, I’ve found better ways to build and manage websites and applications, the source of inspiration for my small business “The Huelsman Way.”
