Hi there – I am currently following the tutorial on how to replicate the demo layout of the site. However, the video relating to the front page (vimeo) says that the video does not exist. Is there a problem with the video? Or is there a new link?
Hello, unfortunately that video was recently taken down and it won’t be replaced any time soon. Please follow the instructions found on the documentation page instead: http://themestation.co/documentation/podcaster/#getting-started
If you run into any trouble setting up the theme, just let me know I’d be happy to help. Sorry about that.
Hi,
Really nice theme. I have set it up and it looks cool. Just one thing:
I want to have a different image set as the background, and a different image as thumbnail. Know I can only choose 1 of the two options. How can I put 1 images: one as the background, and one as the (featured) thumbnail?
Hello, Podcaster pulls it’s header background from the featured image and then crops a thumbnail as well from the same image. Unfortunately, as of now, there is no way of doing what you describe. I’ll keep this in mind for future updates though. Can’t promise anything as of now, but it’s on my list.
Hi, I installed the theme using the SoundCloud preset but can’t get the following options to work:
Front Page Header: Won’t display Newest or Featured Episode on Header Content.
Blog Main Layout Sidebar: Won’t display custom sidebar content on inside blog pages.
Please let me know how I can fix these issues Thanks
Replied to your email, sorry for the delay
I realise you only have 2 font options – Lora and Raleway – but my developer should be able to add code to override this function, surely?
Hello,
Yes, Google Fonts are included and Typekit can be added as well using custom CSS, all within the theme options. And of course all fonts can be overridden using CSS within the child theme as well.
After over a year I am still loving this theme! A few questions:
- I have the “blog” page as my main page. Is there a way to put an extend page button or “next page’ button on the bottom of the page for people who want to keep scrolling?
- Where can I customize page headers? It seems to tile the featured image by default. Can I change that to stretch or something? Can I set a header image that is not the featured image? Some of my pages have a specific featured image that look odd tiled across the top.
- I am also noticing speed issues. Any updates on that that or have any code/plugin suggestions to help out with that?
Thank you!
Hello,
Happy to hear that you’re still enjoying the theme! To your questions:
- Do you mean a “read more” button that loads posts? Regular pagination should be available at the bottom of the posts.
- When creating your page, scroll to the box called “Page Header Subtitle”. You can choose whether you want to display your header as tiled or stretched. And yes it is tiled by default, so I’d suggest cropping and resizing images beforehand so they fit in the header regardless of whether they are stretched or tiled.
- Is this something specific, say on a specific browser? Are you using any caching plugins? WP Super Cache seems to be a popular choice. Podcaster will be updated soon to include, among other things, further speed optimizations.
I hope this answers your questions, do let me know if anything is unclear. I’d be happy to help.
Hi there!
Sorry it took so long to get back to this! I’m actually talking about the main page. You can see mine here: happyjacks.org – is there a way to put a “show more” or “next page” at the bottom of that page?
Is there a way to get play bars on that page as well? That would be amazing!
Thanks for the info about the images!
I figured out the speed issues as well! Thanks!
New questions:
I am getting double play bars on the individual post pages. Is there a way to avoid that? I’m not sure if my podcasting plugin is doing it or if I have a setting that is wrong.
Also, where can I update the Podcast/Subscribe links that post with every podcast? I can’t find the settings to update them even though I must have set them up at one point.
You can see both those last two things here: http://www.happyjacks.org/hjrp2118-legacy-campaign-tainting-experience-triumph-and-learning/
Thanks!
No worries!
Ah, I see what you mean. To add a button linking to your episode archive for example (you can put any URL you want though) simply go to Theme Options > Front Page and check “Podcast Archive Button Text” as well as “Podcast Archive Button URL”. Simply add the text and URL you’d like to use, save, and you’ll have a button at the bottom of your posts.
If you are getting double players, you can disable the PowerPress plugin from displaying the default players. From your dashboard simply go to PowerPress > Settings > (After making sure “Advanced Mode” is active”) select the “Website” tab. Then scroll to “Display Media & Links” and select “Disable. This will keep your feeds and all other settings/enclosures in place, but will hide the default players. Podcaster manually pulls the players, so you will still see the featured players.
The Podcast/Subscribe links should be editable within the PowerPress plugin as well. Within the options page, please check the Feed, iTunes, Google Play tabs. Since this is a 3rd-party plugin I am only able to give limited instructions unfortunately, but those are the places I would check. Chances are you entered the URLs there.
I hope this answers your questions, do let me know if anything is unclear. I’d be happy to help.
Hello, I am using Podcaster and having a few problems. Mainly figuring out how the link to subscribe is supposed to work, is it supposed to directly subscribe you or just give you the rss code (that’s what it currently does.) Also wondering what the best pixel ratio is for the header image? right now I cannot get it to fill the whole space without cutting off part of the picture. Lastly am I supposed to be able to play the podcast from the front page? I would like to be able to, there is a play button on the photo so I thought that’s what it was for, please let me know. Thank you.

Not sure if this is a wordpress thing, but my domain root http://wonderfullifepodcast.com is pulling up the wrong page. Not sure where this page is being generated from. The one that should be there can be found at http://wonderfullifepodcast.com/front-page.
NVM Went to Settings->Reading and set the home page to the static page front-page.
Ok, happy to see you figured it out
FYI, LIbsyn just announced their support of embed.ly.
Thanks for the heads up, I’ll look into this.
Hi there, I did a fresh install on PHP 7.1 and I am getting this error on the homepage: Warning: A non-numeric value encountered in /srv/users/../apps/../public/wp-content/themes/podcaster/index.php on line 154
Is this a PHP version error? How can I resolve this?
Hello,
I’m sorry about that. In order to resolve this I need to know some things: could you send me your URL so I can take a closer look at what you are seeing? Is the site loading at all? Are you getting this error on the dashboard or site? You can send it to support@themestation.net as well.
So it appears that it is, in fact, a PHP warning with 7.x. I downgraded the PHP version and am now no longer seeing it. Just an FYI for future releases
I had the same issues with megamenu and other plugins as well.
Thanks for the feedback and heads up.
Podcaster has yet to be made fit for PHP 7 keep an eye open for the change log in future updates.
Request: I’m happy this also supports the Seriously Simple Speakers extension for SSP. BUT, it would be nice to have more than an on/off for it. Turning it on adds the speakers to the sidebar, which is fine and dandy for the podcast itself, but it also adds it to normal blog posts, where contextually that doesn’t really make sense. I’d love to see an option to limit it showing on just podcast episodes, or at least change the labeling on normal content to say something like “Author” or such.
Thanks for the feedback, I’ll look into this for the next update.
Awesome, thanks!
Hi, Another pre-purchase Libsyn question (sorry, I’m not sure I understood your previous answers). I am going to host my audio files on Libsyn, but want a visitor to my website to be able to play from there (via a link, and without slowing down the site much). Like in this website (which may be your template? looks very similar) http://podcast.cdsporch.org/episode-46-i-know-its-you-rebroadcast/ I like the “play in new window / download” options also. Is this possible? Thanks!
Yes, you can do this by using Podcaster with the PowerPress plugin along side (which is the plugin used in the link you sent me). As long as you have a direct link to your audio file (ending in *.mp3 for example) you can link to it in the style shown in the example above. I hope this answers your question
Thank you!
Hi, all! Does anyone know how, if it’s possible, to have audio play in the background of the homepage? It’s just my show intro, 16 seconds long. I can’t find where to possibly make that happen lol any help is appreciated!!
While Podcaster doesn’t offer this in it’s settings there are ways of simply adding an <audio> tag with your track to the HTML. Make use of the child theme, it should work that way.
Hi there, love your theme but have 2 questions that I am struggling with at the moment: 1. Although I have updated the theme and wordpress to the newest version I cannot find the “featured post” box in the articles. There is just no such box like explained in your documentation (http://themestation.co/documentation/podcaster/#featured-posts). Is it because I installed the German version of wordpress? What can I do to get posts/articles to be “featured” so that the newest featured article is displayed in the front page header?
2. Is there a way to include all categories in the posts displayed at the front page? At the moment only the ones from the podcast category are displayed. Or if this doesn’t work, how can I include the podcast category in the blog section? I want to have a blog style page with all categories being displayed, either on the front page (wold be my favorite) or at the blog section…
Cheers, Fabster
Okay, meanwhile I figured out how I can include the podcast category in the blog section. But still I am looking for a way to display all categories on the front page and not only the podcast category. Another question: where can I translate things like “leave a replay” or “post a comment” into another language (German in my case)?
Sorry for the confusion. I figured out the translation part. So things that I didn’t figured out are question 1 from above and the way to include all categories on the front page..
Hello,
Thanks for getting in touch, I’ll get right to your questions:
1. Under Theme Options > Front Page Header > Header Type make sure you’ve selected “Static (Posts)”. After doing that the Featured Post box should be available.
2. The front page only includes posts from your podcast category. You could create an overall category into which you file all your posts and set that as your podcast category. Keep in mind that will also influence your archive page as well.
I hope this answers your questions
Thank You!
1. I had “Static” ticked on and changed it to “Static (Posts)”. Now everything works fine.
2. Okay, if there is no other way, maybe I will go this way. But maybe it’s an idea for the next update
Happy to see it worked. Hey I’m always open for feedback and suggestions. Will keep this in mind.
I’m interested in this theme, but my client wants to be able to see how many people have listened to an audio file – is this possible?
This depends on the plugin you are using, as statistics and the likes are kept out of theme code. If you let me know what plugin you are using, I’d be happy to let you know if it is compatible and to what extend it’s features are currently supported.
Hi all, it’s me again (sorry for all these requests!). I was checking my homepage and it seems some of the issues reported by an online checker could be solved by you:
a) Malformed Head – The <head> area appears to be malformed. This can be due to text or invalid tags in your <head>, or due to meta or link tags in your . One effect of this issue might be missing meta information This can cause misinterpretations (missing Canonical for instance) The w3c validator below might help you figure out the exact reason
b) css files – There is more than one CSS file which need to be loaded. From performance perspective it would be better to merge them into one file to improve page speed. The page loads 18 css files and uses 3 inline css blocks
c) JavaScript Files – There are quite a lot of JavaScript files which need to be loaded. From performance perspective it would be better to merge them into one file to improve page speed. The page loads 31 javascript files and uses 10 inline script blocks
d) Caching – It looks like the page does not provide browser caching. This would improve user experience! Only pages which have a rapidly changing content should disable browser caching.
Also, what is the standard way to create a sitemap while working with your environment?
Thanks a lot!
Hello, don’t worry about it, that is what I’m here for
As to your questions:
a) Without actually taking a look at your HTML code, I cannot tell what may be causing this. Do keep in mind that your active plugins also add code to the <head> of your file, so they could be the ones causing this. If you send me your URL I’d be happy to take a closer look. You can also send it to support@themestation.net
b) Again, I can only repeat what I said in a) plugins will load their own CSS files when needed, so not all those files are loaded by Podcaster. As for the ones that are, there are also reasons to load separate files, this makes updating them easier, especially if it is a 3rd party plugin and means the file will only be loaded if it is actually being used or is active. I will keep this in mind for future optimization, though.
c) Same as in a) and b) Do keep in mind that if you are using a customizable theme, it will tend to have many elements that can be plugged in and out and that will be loaded when active (be it CSS files or JS files.) If you set up a more static website, where customization and updating isn’t necessarily in the foreground, you can optimize much easier to suit your exact needs. I hope this makes sense.
d) Caching is usually kept out of theme code and using a plugin is advised. There are several caching plugins available in the plugin repository, you should be able to find one that suits your needs.
e) Podcaster does not come with a sitemap function ready made, but if you let me know what structure you would like your sitemap to have, or can send me an example, I’ll see what I can do.
Noticed a comment about load times… have you been able to get the load times down? As I am sure you know, load times are a critical SEO/usability challenge and I want to make sure we are good before I purchase. Expecting Page Load to be below 1 second…
Hello, Thanks for your question. Load times are being worked on, but do keep in mind that since Podcaster also has to load media files and embeds (if these are active) this massively impacts the load times as well, since those are usually large files.
Hi! Is it possible to refer to external feed link podcasts like: http://seismograf.org/lyt-dybt/feed? If yes, does your beautiful player also support external feed links?
Hello, this depends on the plugin you are using to manage your podcast. Do let me know and I’ll be happy to answer your question.
What do you mean? Does your theme not include a way to manage podcasts? And is RSS feed support built-in in your theme?
So, the theme supports two of the most used podcasting plugins, Blubrry PowerPress and Seriously Simple Podcasting as well as an in-house plugin that is currently being overhauled. The reason these functionalities are not built directly into the theme is to that you can keep functionality of your website even when you decide to update to another theme in the future. But when you activate the plugin, the theme will tap into them and pull out all needed functionality and display it where needed. Such as links to feeds and the likes.
However, since the plugins are different in what the offer, I need to know which one you’re using to answer your question.
I am planning on using Seriously Simple Podcasting. Will that be a problem?
Just to be sure.. I want to use websites RSS feed (like http://seismograf.org/lyt-dybt/feed?) to content onto our site automatically. Our site is not http://seismograf.org. Is this possible using Seriously Simple Podcasting?
So I just tried it out, and yes, you will able to use an RSS feed, Seriously Simple Podcasting creates an feed with media enclosures that you can use. You can also link to (externally hosted) audio files and display audio players. I hope this answers your questions!
Thank you – sounds good! So by using Seriously Simple Podcasting we will be able to link to an externally audio file and play it with this themes media player? I am sorry for all the questions but we have bought several themes now, which does not support this feature
Yes, exactly, you can link to the externally linked files while using the themes media player. No worries, I’m happy to answer your questions
Hi
Love the theme! Just need a bit of help.
On my homepage in the blog section – is there a way to specify the categories that the Blog pulls in? Currently it just pulls in everything. I want to be able to specify the category it pulls in. Also, it currently only pulls in 4 posts – I want to be able to specify the number it pulls in if possible.
Also, I want to add some text to the home page above the podcast column (below the header image and buttons). Is there a way I can do that?
Many thanks, Rich
Hello Rich, I’m happy to hear you love the theme. As for your questions, there is no way of changing this within the theme options. But if you are comfortable with making edits to the code, I’d be happy to give you pointers on how to go about it. Just let me know.
Yes please, I can make edits to the code if you could give me pointers! Many thanks!
Ok, to make the changes to the homepage, please make a copy of the file called page-frontpage.php and paste it into the child theme. It’s in the sub-directory /page/ so make sure you create that sub-directory within the child theme as well. This will protect your changes from being overwritten during updates.
Depending on the style you chose for the blog, go to lines 326 and 328 (for columns) lines 389 and 391 (for columns ii) and lines 439 and 441 and increase posts_per_page to the desired number.
In those sames lines you will also find the “cat” setting which manages the categories shown in those sections. Currently it is set to simply show all posts minus the posts in your podcast category. You can change that setting to the categories you want listed there. Find out how to do that here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Class_Reference/WP_Query#Category_Parameters
Now as for adding a little bit of text between the header and the posts: Add the following to line 71 just after ”<div class=”row masonry-container”>”
<div class=”col-lg-12 col-md-3 col-sm-4 col-xs-6 col-xxs-12”> <?php the_content(); ?> </div>
Now the text you enter into the edit text field, will appear above your posts.
Do keep in mind that you will have to make these changes to the “page-frontpage-left.php” and “page-frontpage-right.php” as well if you are using any of the front page templates with sidebars.
Hope this works for you, do let me know if anything is unclear.
How can I make the height of the page title bar a lot smaller (a few pixels bigger then the size of the text). As it is now, it is huge. See below: https://screencast.com/t/GhrmsHEjqjS. Please note I have regular theme installed, not child theme. Thanks.
Hello, that is no problem, the child theme works by loading the main theme while still giving you the option to make your own customizations. Simply make the edits within the child theme, upload it, then go to Appearance > Themes and activate it. By activating it, your parent theme will still be loaded while using the changes you added to the child theme to override settings.
If you want to find out more about child themes, I recommend the following links: https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/child-themes/, https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2016/01/create-customize-wordpress-child-theme/
I hope this answers your questions
thanks. do I just add that code to the functions.php file or to the css file, then upload the child theme?
I added the following code to the child theme and it didn’t not work to affect the page title bar height or the footer bar height. Please advise:
.page .reg .heading, .podcast-archive .reg .heading, .search .reg .heading, .archive .reg .heading { padding: 50px 0; }
.page .reg .heading .title, .archive .reg .heading .title, .search .reg .heading .title { padding: 60px 0; }
https://screencast.com/t/qnz7cvHjlK06 https://screencast.com/t/W1YTZf4WDid you add this to the style.css of your child theme and did you activate the child theme?
You also have to change the padding values and adjust them until they suit what you are looking for. change them to 40px or 30px for example.
yes, added to the css file of the child theme which is active. I also tried adjusting padding, didnt work.
Sorry to hear it’s not working out, could you send me a URL, I’d be happy to take a closer look at what is happening?
Thanks for the link, I just took a look around and the child theme seems to be set up properly. Please change the values within the child theme to:
.page .reg .heading, .podcast-archive .reg .heading, .search .reg .heading, .archive .reg .heading { padding: 10px 0; }
.page .reg .heading .title, .archive .reg .heading .title, .search .reg .heading .title { padding: 10px 0; }
I just tried using developer tools and it worked on my browser. It should work once to change the values within your child theme and save. Do keep in mind that if you’re running a caching plugin, the changes might take some time to be picked up.
As for the footer, add the following to your child theme:
footer .footer-widgets { padding-top: 50px; padding-bottom: 50px; }
This should do the job
this seemed to work!! thanks for all your help!!
Happy to hear it worked!
How can I make the height of the page title bar a lot smaller (a few pixels bigger then the size of the text). As it is now, it is huge. See below: https://screencast.com/t/GhrmsHEjqjS
Yes, this can be done. Adding the following to the child theme and editing it would change the height of the header.
.page .reg .heading, .podcast-archive .reg .heading, .search .reg .heading, .archive .reg .heading { padding: 50px 0; }
.page .reg .heading .title, .archive .reg .heading .title, .search .reg .heading .title { padding: 60px 0; }
I didn’t install child theme, I installed regular theme. Can I still do this?
Hey there, before I answer any more of your questions, you don’t seem to have purchased the theme or support for the theme using this account. If you purchased the theme on another account, please log into that account and ask your questions from there, so your purchase is verified. Thanks!
Hello! I sent a message to support but was unanswered. After struggling to sync iTunes podcasting, my front page header just disappeared. I tried everything to get it back but if you could give me a hand that would be great. I think there seems to be an error.
Hello, sorry about that. I’m not sure where you sent your message to, nothing arrived on my end. I hope I can help you here, though.
May I ask what plugin you are using for your podcast? And could you send me a URL of your site so I can take a closer look at what you are seeing on your end? You can send it to support@themestation.net if you don’t wish to publish it here. Thanks!
I’m using powerpress and seriously simple podcasting. Www.lithiumpodcast.com
Ok there might lie the problem. I recommend using either one or the other, since they both work in similar ways and activating them at the same time will make them clash. May I ask why you activated them both?
Yes, I inherited the website from the client’s intern, who apparently loaded the podcasts on Seriously Simple Podcasting, but could not get iTunes to work without downloading Powerpress. I had the same problem, I initially deactivated powerpress but could not sync iTunes without it. Please give me a hand if you can as I am experiencing big problems with the website and don’t know what else to do.
Also now I changed the logo and main color from coral to red and its not updating on all pages. Please give me a hand or I will have to unfortunately discard the theme!
Sorry to hear you’re thinking about not using the theme anymore. Unfortunately it can take between 24-48 hours for me to get back to support requests. I hope you can understand.
As for the plugin settings, since I’m not a developer of either, I cannot give you definitive answers when it comes to their functionality. But if you want me to take a closer look at the settings in regards to Podcaster, please create a dummy account for me so I can log in and take a look. Use the email support@themestation.net and I will be notified as soon as you create the account. Do make sure it has admin rights. I would then also take a look at your logo settings.
Hello, I sent everything to your email. I understand i have to wait 24/48 hours, we just very much like the overall aesthetic of the theme and want to make it work.
Responded to your email
Very good. Thanks guys for your great support, I`m glad I purchased this Theme.
Happy to hear it worked!
