Now using Gutenberg with the Spiritual Theme seems to work fine, actually.
So I do not have a problem anymore, but thought I would write this in case it is useful to others. Other users who want to use the Gutenberg editor (but do not try this change unless you are comfortable with editing PHP files for your site!). Or the author in case they want to include this fix in the next release.

You are getting revolution slider plugin with theme ( free ) so you don’t need to activate it or any registration. If you want it then you have to buy separate copy from codecanyon to became direct buyer of this plugin ( http://codecanyon.net/item/slider-revolution-responsive-wordpress-plugin/2751380 ) which is not necessary because we are updating plugin version regularly.

Recurring events feature is not available with the theme. You can customize it with any recurring events plugin.

Default Page template. This gives only 2 columns instead of 3.
I tried Default Events template. This gives only 2 columns.
I tried 100% width page. This gives me horizontal scroll.

Process of updating the theme looks like delete the parent theme and then upload the zip file. Is that safe with no data loss or is there a better way?
