TBH it is not one of our priorities for two following reasons:

The common situation is that the post belongs to two categories. If that is the case, as it often is, then there is no way to display hierarchical “path” as you expect it, for both (or more than two) categories with parents. The only solution to this situation is to display the categories to which the post actually belongs to (the leaf categories) as it is now.

So far, none of the users requested change of this behavior – you are the first one

So currently our conclusion is that the current functionality meets the needs of most of the theme users. Naturally, we will monitor the situation and if this changes we will act accordingly. Keep in mind that this change would affect all existing sites if implemented “instead” of the current functionality.
