One questions to the featured images: are they cropped in the height or can I use also portrait images there?

Yes, you’re right – this problem exists only on live preview – it was fixed. Theme available on TF doesn’t include such problem.
Yes, you can use portrait images as well – they aren’t cropped in the height.
