hi, I have renewed my support, opened a ticket a few days a go, and can’t see any response??? In fact, I’m not sure how to view my ticket? how does it work? I’m at loss, and I need your help urgently. Please respond asap. Many thanks
Hi,
Everything on how the “tickets” work can be found on the submission site – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/how-it-works/
It is all email based so you should have received an email with our reply (looks like my support staff replied the same day – https://cl.ly/oDbP
By default, responses go to the email you use for your ThemeForest account but when submitting a ticket you can also enter a custom email. Make sure to check the correct email and it’s not going to your spam box.
I’ll send another reply now as well just as a test.
- AJ
Oh and there was 2 other tickets we replied to that we never heard back from you either
Usually this happens if our emails are going to your spam box. If you prefer I can also update your account to use a different email such as a gmail, just let me know.
- AJ
hi, oh yes, I kept asking my boss for the answer (his email address), but he kept saying nothing has come through. Probably in his spam folder. Please use monia.londyn@yahoo.co.uk for our account for the future. Can you send me all your previous responses to that email too? Many thanks!
Hi,
I’ll switch the email over. I can’t “forward” the emails because of how the ticket/email system (helpscout) we use works. But I can send you a direct email with screenshots
- AJ
Alright I sent several emails to this email address. If you need further help, please be sure to submit a new ticket using the new email address to ensure we receive it and reply accordingly.
I hope you had a nice weekend!

Hi AJ, I have breadcrumbs enabled but they dont appear to be showing on any of my webpages, any advice, the site in question is carlomullenphotography.co.uk
thanks
Hi,
Breadcrumbs is shown by default in the page header but you don’t have the default page header enabled on any pages so it can’t show.
You can either use the page builder breadcrumbs module (added a few updates ago) to display the breadrumbs on pages with a hidden page title or you can add it to the site via a child theme easily using theme hooks – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/action-hooks/
By the way…I’ve noticed you’ve opened many support requests for various websites, but I only see 1 active license under your username. Please be sure to purchase a license for each site the theme is used on. Or if you are purchasing the theme under different accounts please seek support with the username the theme was purchased on , this way your support license can be verified.
It’s very expensive to run a theme market so it’s important that customers follow the licensing terms – https://themeforest.net/licenses/terms/regular
Thank you!
- AJ
Hi, Sorry i do keep meaning to update the licence or to get a new licence, i will get onto that asap.
i add the theme breadcrumbs its puts them above my header/title image.
i dont appear to have the breadcrumbs module
Hi, Is there any reason why if i insert an image grid, im being limited to the only adding four photos?
thanks
Hi,
The image grid should display all photos by default. If you can only add 4 photos most likely server is returning an error that won’t allow you to upload more. Do you see any errors in the browser console when you try to insert more then 4 images?
If you renew your support license and submit a private ticket we can have a look for you – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/

RE: * HOW TO DISPLAY CUSTOM MENU ON THE CURRENT PAGE *
Hello AJ,
I used your snippet, linked below, to display a custom menu for my blog posts and blog archives:
https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/snippets/display-custom-menu/The end result is that the custom menu only displays on the blog ARCHIVE page, not the blog posts.
What changes do I need to make to the snippet to get the custom menu to also display on each individual blog post?
As always, thank you.
- Debbie
Hi Debbie,
Sorry for the confusion the Total function wpex_is_blog_query doesn’t return true on the singular posts. I updated the snippet for you, please have a look
- AJ
AJ does it again! Thanks, the update worked.
HI AJ!!!!!
I am having such an awesome time now editing my new site with this template. Seriously great. Your vids on YouTube have really helped.
Here’s my main question now, the thing I need help with:
I’m using the site as a way to sell items. So I’m using the Portfolio Grid With Filter to showcase them. I’m using the filter inside it—not adding the search bar that uses a separate menu above it technique. Just turning on the filter inside the Portfolio Grid thing itself. In other words…..I’m using the “show filter” technique shown in the first half of the video here (not the way you added the filter in the second half of this video that uses the Navigation Bar): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifhQ7Fb-0lE
I tried the use of the Navigation Bar—incorporated the menu I created into it, etc. and it didn’t work for my site. I think because somehow the menu I used was using options that went to Pages in the site rather than Portfolio Items. And I couldn’t figure out how to make that custom menu access the categories in my Portfolio rather than categories in my Pages. So I gave up.
So. Using the Show Filter option in the “Portfolio Grid with Filter” thing instead…that’s what I’m doing.
Now, all I want to do now is have that Portfolio Grid with Filter have a “Search Bar” to be there, for people to use…that will display to the right of the Categories that are used in that filter that appear there…..the categories I’ve used for the items I’m having show in the portfolio there. I’m only going to have 6 or 7 categories for all items in the portfolio grid to show, because all designations of items to show up there as tabs would be like….200 of them. Not kidding!
And I want that Search Bar to search all items in the Portfolio Grid with Filter, and be able to search the items in the Portfolio Grid with Filter—search the categories AND the tags I have for each item there.
Note: please keep in mind that I also want the Search Bar that already appears in the header for the site to do the same thing, but more. I want all search bars to be able to find items I tag, and to use both categories and tags to find the items. BUT the difference between the search bar that appears above the Portfolio Grid with Filter and the search bar that appears in the header area of the site (that came with the template): the Portfolio Grid with Filter search bar will ONLY search items in that Portfolio Grid with Filter, while….the search bar that appears in the header that came with the template will search all items in the Portfolio Grid with Filter AND everywhere else on the site. Because eventually I will have other pages with other ((different)) items. And I want to parse each page out with its own search bar, but to have each page searchable with a “master search option” that will be the option to search in the header.
AND….for both search bars….the one in the header and the one on the Portfolio Grid with Filter: I want them to search Categories and Tags…AND ALL OTHER text that pops up in the description of an item once you click on it. In other words, the search function for both search bars will be the same. Will search in the same manner, but the search bar on the Portfolio Grid with Filter will only search items in that Grid, no further. It’s the “Master Search Bar” thing (as I like to call it) that pops up in the header that will search ALL items in the entire site. And once again—I will eventually have more than one separate page with its own Portfolio Grid with Filter there, with different items than other pages for each page. So Page 1, Page 2, Page 3….all that will have different “things” to display there. For example: Page 1 will have all shoes, Page 2 will have all scarves, Page 3 will have all gloves. I want each Page to have a search bar that will search in those items ONLY for that search bar, but the “Master Search Bar” that came with the template will use all text in the descriptions, all Categories, all Tags to search ALL Pages and everything there.
How do you suggest I best achieve this, AJ?
Thanks again for all your help!!!!! <3
....hello??
so, i am confused. i see you answered every other ticket put in today, except mine. tickets from people who ‘purchased’ their theme from you…like i did. but my purchase has a little green button, one that says, “SUPPORTED”...does that not mean that i am meant to be given tech support? and…perhaps even given priority tech support over others who do not have that little green “SUPPORTED” button by their name?
i know you’re busy, and i respect that. but seeing you support everyone else here before me, even others that….put in their tickets after me, well…that’s unnerving.
please respond to my ticket. thank you.
Hi,
Sorry for the delay. Usually I answer all the quick questions first and then get to the longer ones (this is more efficient and beneficial to everyone). I wasn’t feeling good and had to take some time off to rest in bed. I’m not back to work catching up on tickets.
So regarding your question…
- Adding a search bar next to the filter isn’t very difficult using theme hooks – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/action-hooks/
But the searchform won’t “filter” the items when you search it would still open up the WordPress search page and show results. If you want it to search only the grid items and pull the results via ajax that’s going to be a massive customization since you need to create the javasript for the search that pulls items via ajax and then updates the grid accordingly.
You may want to consider instead using a 3rd party filtering plugin such as facetWP – https://facetwp.com/ – which allows you to create custom “facets” (grids) and filters to filter out the displayed entries. This plugin is amazing but it is geared towards developers as it takes custom code to set everything how you want.
AJAX searching and displaying entries is a complex but more importantly bulky function so it’s not something you would find built-into a theme by default (since most customers wouldn’t use it and it adds significant bloat to the site).
- Now in terms of allowing the WordPress search to search by categories and tags that’s also an advanced function outside the scope of any WP theme. By default WordPress only searches by title and content. If you need it to search by tags/categories it requires altering how the WP search works completely which requires a lot of custom code – luckily there are plugins out there you can use for this (free and premium). The most popular one is probably searchwp – https://searchwp.com/ (it is premium but it’s the one most people use).
- Now…regarding the filtering. The default filtering function is a javascript filter so it only filters the items on the active page – https://cl.ly/oCtI – this means if you will have like 200 items you will want to paginate the page and the filter will only filter by the items displayed on that specific page. But it sounds like you may want instead an AJAX filter which actually pulls items from the database and then shows them on the page. That’s another reason why you may need to use a 3rd party plugin such as facetwp which can display items via AJAX as mentioned previously.

Hello. I’ve got problem with backend visual composer, which is included in to Total theme. Strange thing but i can’t save any editing results when im using Firefox v 56 and 57. I double checked this on Win7 Win10 and Linux Mint with XFCE 18. No problem on Brave, Chromium or Opera.
Hi,
This was a known bug with the WordPress 4.9 update. The fix has already been added. Please make sure to update your theme and the page builder plugin then clear your firefox cache and it should fix the problem.

Everything is working now. Thanks
Hi, Is there a way to import just the paris demo landing page into our website wihout impact our current landing page? After import paris demo landing we will make required changed and then finally replace it with existing landing page. Thanks
We would like to add tawk.to chat on our website, we have got the widget code scripts (<script></script>). Please let me know where to add that in the theme panel for the tawk.to chat to display
Please reply to both our questions
Hi,
- Because the paris demo uses a local scroll menu it’s easier to import the demo but if you are willing to learn how things work you could just copy the code from here – http://bit.ly/2B3RtH0
And paste it into your page via the standard WordPress “text” mode (not visual). Then you can just edit things accordingly.
This is probably the best method because it won’t import any images or customizer settings so you will only have the layout and not have to worry about deleting imported images.
Here is the guide for setting up a local scroll menu – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/creating-local-scroll-menu/
You could also just import the demo to a stagging or local installation to see how it works and then create your own page. It’s very easy to create a page with the builder – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JyW4yAyTl0
- You can use the panel at Theme Panel > Custom Actions to add your code to either the wp_head or wp_footer tag (depending where your scrip needs to be added – header or footer).

Hi AJ!
How are you doing?
I’m buying yet another version of this theme btw – thanks for making such a great product.
I’ve got a question about functions.php. I’m doing a redirect for a thank you page from contact form 7 (you helped me with this 5 months ago). The issue is that it uses a single URL to redirect to. However, the site is in multiple languages and therefore multiple thank you pages. Is there a way to extract some bit of information to tell me the language the user is seeing either by a parameter functions.php has access to or if it is able to pull a url (the contact form itself is different per language as is the url the contact form sits on)?
My thinking is that I could grab that parameter and use a conditional to change the location variable. Right now, this redirect only works in English. In other languages, the form just spins and spins.
//redirect of contact form 7
add_action( 'wp_footer', function() { ?>
<script>
document.addEventListener( 'wpcf7mailsent', function( event ) {
location = 'http://interrainternational.com/contact/thank-you/';
}, false );
</script>
<?php } );
Example of french not sending: http://interrainternational.com/contactez-nous/?lang=fr
Example of english redirecting properly: http://interrainternational.com/contact/
Thank you!
Julie
Hi Julie,
What language plugin are you using? Because there is actually a known bug with one of the language plugins which can cause the contact form from not submitting correctly.
And yes, you could easily tweak the function to change the URL based on the laguage. I can help with the modification but need to know what plugin you are using so I can write the conditional accordingly.
- AJ
WPML – thanks!
the form is submitting now – it had a bug before. I *think it’s been resolved. as we had issues with chrome and wpml but that is working now. So I think I just need to figure out how to tweak the function to change the url based on the language.. any help is much appreciated.
Hi Julie,
It’s very easy, here is an example:
// Redirect of contact form 7
add_action( 'wp_footer', function() {
$url = 'http://interrainternational.com/contact/thank-you/';
if ( defined( 'ICL_LANGUAGE_CODE' ) && 'fr' == ICL_LANGUAGE_CODE ) {
$url = 'french_url_here';
} ?>
<script>
document.addEventListener( 'wpcf7mailsent', function( event ) {
location = <?php echo $url; ?>;
}, false );
</script>
<?php } );
But also if you ever need tweaks like this for WPML you can always contact them for help. I am happy to help but it is outside the scope of the theme
I hope you are having a nice weekend,
- AJ
Thanks AJ – appreciate the effort. that didn’t actually work for me and yes, I understand this isn’t the theme’s pervue.
With that understanding, I’d like to ditch this attempt and instead simply have it register a google analytics event on send.
could you help me implement this within the theme?
https://contactform7.com/tracking-form-submissions-with-google-analytics/
how can I tell if the google analytics are on each page like it requires?
this says to put it the snippet in the header.php – I’ve been using the child theme’s functions.php – where can I find the header.php?
on a good note – I just purchased another license for Total. Thank you again,
J
Hi,
That’s weird, the code provided should have worked
I did test it locally before sending it over.
The correct way to add code to the header via a child theme isn’t using header.php (to modify it though you would copy it from the parent theme). The correct way is using a hook to inject the code into the head tag via the wp_head hook. Like this:
add_action( 'wp_head', function() { ?>
YOUR CODE HERE
<?php } );
You can learn more about hooks here – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/action-hooks/
And this code of course would go in the child theme’s functions.php file.
- AJ
ps: You should only really need to add the code on the pages that have the form though, I think the reason they say to add it to all pages is so if you do have multiple forms or add new forms later on it still works. But if you wanted to limit the code to a single page it’s very easy as well, example:
add_action( 'wp_head', function() {
if ( ! is_page( 'contact' ) ) {
return;
} ?>
YOUR CODE HERE
<?php } );
thanks – sorry – just trying to figure out all of this –
The first step is finding out that your google analytics are present on each page, at least on the contact.
how can I check to see it is on each page?
I go to the contact page, view source, and search for Analytics and there is nothing to be found.
I know the tracking code being used and it isn’t actually on the page, but does that matter?
thanks for your help
Hi,
1. Make sure to grab the Analytics code from Google and add it to your site on all pages – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/google-analytics-tracking/
2. Then use the snippet I provided previously (added to your child theme’s function.php file) and where it says (YOUR CODE HERE) you should be adding your contact form 7 code.

Hello, love this theme! When it comes to site speed, is it better to have the ‘image sizes’ box checked in the theme panel? or unchecked? What does that do?
Great, I’m glad you like it
In terms of speed it doesn’t matter if it is checked or not. Having it checked will help limit the number of images stored on the server which will make functions like full site backups faster (less images to import).
When it comes to actual site speed and images the important part is using image sizes that aren’t super massive and if speed is very crucial then using a CDN to host the images may be a good idea.
I have a doc article here on speeding up the site – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/speeding-site/
- AJ
slider revolution & layer slider still include in this theme..?
Hi,
Yes. But only Slider Revolution is a “recommended” plugin LayerSlider is included in the download from ThemeForest so it if you wanted it it would have to be installed manually.
There is no need to have 2 slider plugins active though, so only install the one you prefer (we prefer slider revolution which is why it’s the one recommended via the dashboard).

Hello, I have added some code to Custom CSS on my Theme – Total and it is not making any difference on site. I was wondering if you could please advise? I basically want to make the one different box wider and also make the quote mark a slightly different colour (though remain opaque) Thanks! } .blog-entry.format-quote .fa-quote-right { color: #0a99f0;
.blog-entry.format-quote .post-quote-entry-inner {
padding: 800px 700px;
}
Ah, this does work if I look on my mobile…. must be cached…. Thanks!
hmm… Caching is not the issue! Have you got any idea why this has taken effect on only mobile and not on desktop??! Thanks
Hi,
It does sound like a caching issue, can you share the URL so I can look?
- AJ
ps: It is possible for something to be cached on one device and not the other.
Hi, it was my mistake, Turns out I had the CSS in a media query
A couple more questions though please, Website is Ygeiaa.com
Can you please advise how I could make just the box that contains the words “Actionable health tips & inspiration based on latest scientific research” wider? So to take the space of two boxes instead of one? (Something to try) Also he writing is going over the quote mark, how can I stop this?
Also, is it at all possible, for the dark overlay over each photo, to add a green tinge?#117713, it is just something that I would like to try out and then decide.
It says for blog customizations, that to eliminate certain categories from home-page that I have to add the “id”. How do I find the “id” of each category?
Thanks, Lisa
Also one more thing! If I do purchase a logo jpg, can I input this in place of the current logo?
Forget the Logo JPG question as I found that. Wondering if any way to be able to keep the menu always visible on mobile as you scroll down? Thanks!
Very last question!! Any way to space out the menu? Thank you
Hi,
Thank you for your patience. I wasn’t feeling very good lately
Can you please advise how I could make just the box that contains the words “Actionable health tips & inspiration based on latest scientific research” wider?
You can make it double the width, the issue is with the masonry style layout it will cause issues since the script won’t be able to properly position items – https://cl.ly/oCun
You could use javascript instead to make the first item have 2x width but your quote won’t always be the first item..
Also he writing is going over the quote mark, how can I stop this?
This is on purpose but you can use a little css to prevent it or remove the quote completely or make the quote smaller, what do you prefer to do?
Also, is it at all possible, for the dark overlay over each photo, to add a green tinge?#117713, it is just something that I would like to try out and then decide.
Of course, that’s easy with some CSS like this:
.overlay-cats-title-btm-v {
background: #117713;
background: rgba(17, 119, 19, 0.6);
}
Just change the 0.6 to the opacity you want.
lisaanemari PURCHASED SUPPORTED 2 days ago Flag Also one more thing! If I do purchase a logo jpg, can I input this in place of the current logo? (for others wondering, I know you already found your answer)
Of course you can – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/custom-logo/
Very last question!! Any way to space out the menu? Thank you
There isn’t a built-in option due to the complexities of the menus but very easy with a little CSS. Example:
.navbar-style-three .dropdown-menu>li>a {
padding: 0 10px;
}
Simple change the 10px until you like the way it looks. If you go to Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS you can add custom CSS and see how it affects the site live.
I hope you are having a nice weekend!
- AJ
Hi AJ, Thank you very much, Will try this
Lisa
Hello!!!!! AJ, one question. Disregard it if it’s out of the scope of the theme. I’m using Elementor as my preferred builder. The ONLY issue I found with Total is the footer. I LOVE the functionality of Footer builder. I do as always: add new page, build it with elementor, and then go to Theme panel – footer builder – selec that page. First, I can see it, but when I go to the pages that show the footer, it looks like the image I’m attaching: https://imgur.com/x67eK59
And, when I try to edit it again, it shows this: https://imgur.com/JA2HJe5
In the learn more button, they say there are 3 common problems, such as : 1. Sometimes the theme has a front page template that is already pre-built and does not include content from the page. This is most common on free WordPress themes. 2. Custom made page templates that do not include the_content. 3. WooCommerce product pages that do not include the_content
And there’s a solution to add this line: <?php the_content(); ?>
But I don’t know where
I don’t want the post to be super extensive, so I’m adding the link: https://docs.elementor.com/article/56-content-area-not-found?utm_source=editor-panel&utm_medium=wp-dash&utm_campaign=learn
Thanks so much
Hi,
The thing is because you don’t want the footer to actually be a real page on the front-end people can assess the Total theme redirects it. And Total uses functions to make sure it doesn’t get redirected on the backend, but unfortunately Elementor returns false for the is_admin() check when in the live editor.
I think best solution would be to allow you to select Elementor Templates for the footer builder.
I can send you the updated file when that’s ready if you want let me know.
But also their developer docs are horrible
So I’ll need to read through all the plugin code to see if they have any way I can check to see if you are currently in edit mode so I can prevent the redirect.
- Aj
Here is a quick update:
So you can now use Elementor templates – https://cl.ly/oASp
That will fix the issue you were having. I still need to make some edits so when you edit the footer it’s shown at the bottom of your site and doesn’t look like a “post” but this will require editing a few other files.
I do plan on releasing an update though this week and it will have the edits
Will also add support so you can select an Elementor template for your posts dynamic templates
- AJ
WOW. That was FASTTTTTTT! I was just replying to your previous comment hahahaa. You are amazing, have I told you that lately?
Awesome, awesome, AWESOME! I wanna send you a fruit basket or something for Christmas. I really hope Envato pays you well for all of the value you provide. Your support is OUSTANDING.
Ok, I will try that RIGHT AWAY. But I’m not sure where should I put this two files. I just realized I’m not using a child theme, I’ll do it now. I haven’t done much work yet.
Oh my I am sorry I didn’t tell you were to add the files! These would be replaced via FTP at wp-content/themes/Total/framework/addons/
I really appreciate your offer but I am just grateful that you are a very nice, polite and patient customer. That’s all I need. As long as I have good customers I am always willing to help them.
- AJ
(after Envato’s percentage and US taxes I keep about 40% of each sale).
You are the best
Really, thank you for all you do!
Oh hi there. Following along with your installation instructions, and attempting to import demo data. You gave a tool to import data within the theme. That I have to purchase a license to use. Um…no thanks.
Then, you gave great installation instructions on how to import demo content manually. Sent me to GitHub. But there is no separate folder for Total Theme XML files. But a TON of folders for other theme XML demo content. SURELY you do not want me to have to page through ALL of those folders to find demo content for Total….right? You’d have put ONE folder there for me to access, with all XML files in there, right??? GOD HELP ME IF THAT IS WHAT YOU EXPECT, lol!! I mean, FML. Could you guys have at least done that? Where do I get the XML file for total demo theme content? And please, for the love of all things good….please let it be in one location.
Hi,
The reason the demo importer requires a valid theme license is to prevent the thousands of people using the theme illegally to easily import a demo. Did you have trouble activating your license (I see you have purchased the theme) ? Or you just don’t want to activate your license for some reason?
Oh…maybe the confusion is that you think you need a separate license for the demo importer which you don’t. The license is just your theme license see here – https://cl.ly/oADh – if you click that link it takes you to this page – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/envato-purchase-code/ – where you can see how to locate your theme license.
This is used for both automatic updates and for the demo importer.
I hope that clears things up!
If you are having trouble activating the license let me know so I can assist sometimes servers are outdated or have outgoing connections disabled so it may not activate (99% of people don’t have issues though).
Now if you prefer to upload sample data manually, the reason there are tons of folders on Github is because there are tons of demos. So you’ll have to get the files for the demo you want to import specifically.
I hope this all makes sense now. But please let me know if you have any further questions, doubts or issues.
- AJ
OHHHH okay. I just activated my Demo Importer license. Yeah, I purchased the theme today, lol. SOOO CONFUUUUUSED, hahhaha.
So I used the license code I got today with the Total Theme purchase. Had no idea that’s what it was that needed to be entered, thanks for that.
So I now clicked on the Demo Importer tool and it took me to some page; I don’t see the Total Theme there. Where do I find it, to import it?
So…Total is a multi-purpose theme you can create basically anything with it. You already have the “Total theme” on your site but if you want you can import a demo as a “starter” for your site you can see the demos here – https://totalwptheme.com/#demos
Now the demos what they are, are just dummy content and tweaked customizer settings – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/theme-options/ – to create a specific look.
You can do ANYTHING you see in ANY demo with Total, the purpose of the demos are just if you wanted a quick starting point for your site. Most customers that are new to WordPress will choose to import a demo because it helps them visualize how things work. But most of my customers are WP experts so they just setup the site from scratch without a demo.
When you import a demo what it does is upload dummy pages, posts, images, menus, widgets and theme settings.
Does that make sense?
- AJ
Ohhh, ok!!! It does, now.
I want to use it as a portfolio site, and to also sell items if I need to. Which one do you suggest I import? I wound up choosing the “Base” theme because it had “Total” there where the Brand Identity (logo) would go…lol it’s been importing XML data for 15 minutes so far. How much longer do you think I need to wait before regarding it as “frozen”...?
And will the “Base” theme be what I need to use it as a portfolio? Thanks for all your help! Apologies for the noobishness, hahaa…
The demo import should only take about 1-2 minutes on a good server, it’s possible your server has timed out or crashed for some reason. If you go to the main Theme Panel on the right side are all values green? – https://cl.ly/oA2Y
A demo is just a starting point the theme is the same theme no matter what demo you import so you still have access to the portfolio, shop, etc. no matter what you import. So in terms of which one to start with, I recommend choosing one that you like the default design of the most so you don’t have to make so many edits in the Customizer to change colors, etc.
Don’t think of the demos as “Themes” because you are using only 1 theme (Total) the demos are nothing but a starting point to quickly setup the site if you like any particular look.
Hopefully that clears things up.
If you prefer you can open a private ticket and have myself or a support staff help out with the import process – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/
If your server crashed during the import it may be best to deactivate your license and re-install WordPress to start fresh and make sure that the server is setup correctly before trying again.

Oh, crap. No, it isn’t all green….screenshot: http://i63.tinypic.com/2qkqbgi.jpg
Do I really have to wipe and reset it now???
...I’m using a service (shared hosting)...I can’t set up a server. Unless you know of a way to do that for people on shared hosting plans….
Can I just delete the theme and all its folders, then reinstall instead?
man, this suuuucks, if i have to wipe and reset….on hold with tech support at my host now, asking if they can clean up any mess for me, and reset the server upload (“max” time).....
do you suggest i have them adjust the “max time” now, and then wipe? or, wipe and then have them adjust the “max time”...?
and ofc, if i just delete the theme and all its files, would that be okay or do i really need to wipe it??? i don’t want to lose my plugins, etc…
....hello?
Hi,
There are plenty guides online on how to reset WordPress it’s very easy and quick we have one here – http://www.wpexplorer.com/reset-wordpress-website/ – that shows how you can use a plugin for this.
But you don’t necessarily have to wipe and reset everything. I only recommend it if during the initial import try where it failed if content was actually imported, if your site is still completely empty then you don’t have to do that.
Deleting the theme won’t do anything because that’s just theme files. You don’t have to re-install the theme just clear up WordPress to delete any content that may have been imported previously.
In terms of increasing the max time it doesn’t matter when it’s done because that’s a server setting, you just need to make sure it’s done before importing a demo.
Where is your site hosted? These errors generally never happen with WordPress hosting solutions if you are new to WordPress and just picked a random host but want some advice for selecting a good hosting solution for WordPress let me know so I can guide you in the right direction. A common mistake for new WP users is to select whatever hosting is cheapest but WordPress is actually fairly resource intensive and it requires extra stuff, such as caching to store local versions of your dynamic site (you can use a plugin for that, but it’s always better and much easier when it’s built-into your hosting).
Let me know if interested.
- AJ
ok….i JUST wiped everything and reset it, and got this error message:
Warning: Creating default object from empty value in …wp-content/plugins/styleguide/includes/class.styleguide.php on line 179
and yes—Total is the only theme uploaded. no demo content.
oh nm—that’s the name of a plugin. i deactivated it. apparently ur theme doesn’t like it, hahaa..
Nope, not a conflict with the theme that error is straight from the plugin
If you want to use a plugin like that for custom colors and fonts (you don’t really need it when using Total) this one is much better – https://wordpress.org/plugins/yellow-pencil-visual-theme-customizer/ – and they have a premium version which is even more awesome.
- AJ
oh i deactivated it, had it in my plugins list from earlier use.
hey, weird thing—i installed the “Child Theme” that came with the package, when i bought Total. the odd thing: it has a transparent ((no)) image for where it shows up in my theme list. now, Total has a graphic for it, in the list of themes so…it’s not blank, but the Child theme is. is that a sign the Child Theme is defective? why is it like that?
OH SHIT, i wiped my server clean, then….went to reinstall my theme…all went well! until i went to go use the ‘theme importer’ and re-entered in my license key. it said it’s “already in use”....LOL
how do i deactivate it and use it again ((on the same site, lol))...???
....can i “deactivate” it in my private support area—and then re-add it?????
WILL that eliminate my purchase if i do….???? or is that how it works when u go to re-install a theme?
ok, that’s what i did, i decided it was worth a shot…lol
and it worked
- Child theme’s are for developers that’s why it has a blank image so you can edit the image to add a screenshot for your own website.
- If you aren’t going to be making advanced modifications to your site you don’t even need a child theme.
- Yes if you ever need to delete a site be sure to de-activate it first or you can deactivate from the support dashboard. You will NEVER lose your purchase (unless you get a refund).
- AJ
oh neato! how do i edit the screenshot, btw? what a cool feature
You would open it in a photo editor such as Photoshop.
so is there anything not great about using a child theme that i should know about? i have a plugin, ‘child themes’ that would make a child version of my site. i was told making a child version is a wise idea, because it preserves the original theme’s state (parent theme)....in case the child theme gets screwed up. is that the case with Total?
can i use Total better as a child theme than as a parent theme?
and is making my own child theme of Total okay to do, with the ‘child themes’ plugin?
ok, one other weird question: how do i get my logo to display larger?? the restrictions on the space it can display in makes it look really small…i even took off the px height and width in the appearance>customize>header section
Hi,
There is no down side to using a child theme. But the only purpose of having one is for advanced modifications of the theme. For example adding a custom snippet such as those found here – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/snippets/
If you plan on making advanced tweaks or hiring a developer to help you with advanced tweaks then yes having a child theme setup is a good idea and there is no negative affect of having one.
The reason for using a child theme for advanced modifications is because you should never edit the Total theme (parent theme) itself because if you edit the main theme then update it, you will lose your edits.
By default the logo doesn’t have any restrictions and will display at it’s full size unless you imported a demo that has a fixed height for the shrink header animation function – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUxnwB0JQGU
For future specific questions like that if you can share the URL and/or the demo name you imported it would help me provide you with the best support possible, thanks!
- AJ
You are truly amazing. Truly. Thank you—that really made my day. I am currently super happy with everything you’ve done for me; this is a fantastic theme. Thank you for all your hard work on this theme, and thank you for helping me get through this setup!!
I’m happy to help. I will be leaving the office in a bit though since I’ve already worked over 12 hours today but I’ll be back tomorrow after some rest
I hope the theme works well for your site and if you have any other questions or run into any issues just let me know.

Hey Guys, we need to set up a site similar to this layout for our customers:
https://wptangerine.comSome questions:
1) With your Total theme, can we have 2-3 stretched blocks at the top for full screen width, a blog block with a right side bar with widgets for advertising etc? Obviously then another two full stretched blocks at the bottom including an email sign up block, total projects completed block, and maybe a “case study” block with sites we have helped?
2) Is there a plugin/add-on to write reviews of apps and or themes like yours where we can add our affiliate links and score/rating etc? We would like to have a page on the site that has all of the apps and themes we review filterable by category etc.
Chad
Hi Chad,
This is AJ the theme developer.
1. You can build anything you want on the homepage via rows which you can stretch, add multiple columns insert a widget area if needed…etc.
I think this video would be very helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JyW4yAyTl0
Granted this is a very basic example of all the possibilities you can do with the page builder.
2. We have a post here from a couple months ago with some recommendations for review plugins – http://www.wpexplorer.com/best-reviews-testimonials-plugins/
Total is a well coded theme so any good plugin should work with it and if there is any sort of conflict I will of course fix it up.
My recommendation though would be to actually setup a post type not for “reviews” but actually for the different things you will reviewing. For example if you are going to have a section for “themes” you can make a post type called “Themes” – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/adding-custom-post-types – where you publish all the theme reviews and then if you will also review plugins for example add another post type for “Plugins”. Then use a rating plugin that can be activated for use with the post types.
Of course this is my recommendation since I like keeping things very organized but it really depends on your site and how many articles you will publish. If you won’t be publishing too many then maybe a simple post type for “Product Reviews” would suffice.
Also you can use the Total dynamic post template function to customize the layout for your reviews post type – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGYuBjqkj8Q – so they don’t just look like standard posts you can have them look however you want and place the shortcode for your ratings plugin wherever you want on the article.
If you have any other questions let me know!
- AJ
Thanks AJ, I just installed the theme and am going through your links. I will contact you through support with any other questions and also to give you a better idea of the direction of our site/blog.
Awesome. If you have any questions or issues just let me know via a new comment I’m here to help!
- AJ
Can I simply start with one of your pre-made templates like “Vanilla” and then modify the content and blocks?
Never mind, just saw your video which is very well explained. Thx
Great! Glad that helps, and if you have any particular issues or questions about the demo content let me know in a new comment.
- AJ
Hey AJ, I started trying to import a demo theme “Boost”. My old content was all screwed up so I downloaded the plugin to reset my WP site to its original default. I now have a fresh install of WP and Total and am starting from scratch. I am NOT WP fluent, but know I can build this site with Total. I could use a little nudge in the right direction for building just the home page from start to finish. I searched your videos, but did not find one starting from scratch. For instance, I want two full width blocks under the top nav bar, then 2-3 blocks with a right side bar, then 2-3 full width blocks above the footer. Do you have a tutorial that will show me how to set that up?
ALSO… I am using the demo theme “Paris”. How do I change it so the nav bar links go to pages rather than scroll down the page? I will need all blocks down the page to be static.
Hi,
Sorry for the delay, I wasn’t feeling too good the last couple days and was in bed for the most part.
Did you have a look at this video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JyW4yAyTl0
The page builder is pretty much self explanatory if you speak english.
Here is a little video showing how to add for example 2 full rows and then a row with a sidebarbar (by the way, if you are using the page builder I don’t see much need for adding a sidebar, why not just place whatever you want into the column itself?)
Video: https://cl.ly/oDTf
For the menu if you imported the Paris demo, just go to Appearance > Menus and change the menu items. Delete the default menu items and then add the links to your custom pages.
- AJ
Hello AJ,
As you recommended, I’d like to send you a ticket about iLightbox sizing.
Can I add in it 2-3 short minor questions on other subjects, or you prefer comments for these ?
Michel
Hi Michel,
It’s up to you. No need to ask questions about asking questions it’s just more work for both of us
Odd Column Background Behavior with External Editors
I have a tricky question about column backgrounds that I can’t figure out. I am able to create a sidebar column (2/3 + 1/3) with a black background and white text. If I copy-and-paste the plain-text HTML to another post within the Wordpress back end, the formatting is correct and the sidebar maintains its black background. (Even if I paste in plain-text mode and never open the visual editor.)
BUT—if I copy and paste the very same text into an external editor like MarsEdit or Ulysses, it publishes the post with perfect formatting except the black sidebar background. I know the HTML isn’t corrupted because it’s formatting the columns, recognizing links, changing the color of the text in the sidebar, and doing everything else correctly, but it just does not want to recognize that background color change on the sidebar column.
However, if I open the visual editor on that post, then open the sidebar column editor and close it again, the background changes to black, even if I don’t save changes. I’m hoping you love a good mystery as much as me, but are better at solving them. I would really, really love to use an external editor for these posts because it’s a big part of my workflow and it saves me a ton of time. Do you have any idea what’s going on? I’ve compared posts side by side and I do not see a difference in the body of the posts, which makes me think something may be going on in the back end, out of my sight?
Latest test: I created a post with MarsEdit. Uploaded to Wordpress and it created a post without the black background, as expected. I opened the editor on that post in plain-text mode and simply copied that text, pasting it into a new post from within the Wordpress back end. I previewed the new post, created with the exact same HTML and shortcodes as the previous one, and voila! The black background does appear on it. The only difference is that one was created in the back end of Wordpress, and one was uploaded via a 3rd party editor. But the code and text is all the same. So weird.
Hi,
To be honest I have no idea what you are doing exactly. Any chance you can share a video example?
Also if you are going to use a text editor to write custom HTML why even use the page builder plugin? I am a bit confused as to what you want to do here.
And if all you want is to have posts with a black sidebar you shouldn’t have to use the Visual Composer at all to create 2 columns, the theme already has a built-in post/page with sidebar layout that you can use – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/content-layouts/
Duplicating the html every time you write a new post is also going to be very time consuming and very hard to globally modify in the future if needed. If you do prefer to create a custom layout for your posts with the page builder then I highly recommend instead using a dynamic template – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGYuBjqkj8Q – so you can control the layout in 1 place and have it automatically applied to all your posts.
Lastly, if you are only referring to using a 3rd party editor for writing blog post “Text” then no need to ever copy all the html either and in general your blog posts shouldn’t even make use of a page builder since blog posts should really just be headings, text and images.
I would love to help just not sure what is going on or what you are trying to do…but hopefully this helps at least a bit for now until you can show me a live example. Thanks!
- AJ
Okay, let me back up and give you a little background. I’m using Wordpress (and Total) for my local sports website, which is advertiser supported. I write game recaps, post photo galleries, video highlights, etc. My advertisers are listed in the right sidebar on every page. (Home page – www.republictigersports.com)
In addition to those sidebar ads, I sometimes sell additional sponsorships, which allow advertisers to appear in a special section within the game recap. This is where the visual editor comes in. It enables me to get creative with the layout. Here is a recent example: http://www.republictigersports.com/2017/11/dry-spell-dooms-lady-tigers/ ... The “Farr Better Player of the Game” section is set apart as an advertising section, made possible by the visual editor.
I’m not re-creating the coding each time I add a blog post. Instead, I am using an app called TextExpander, which allows me to type a short snippet (in this case, “farrplayer”), and in turn creates the post template in plain text. All i do from there is type my game story in the right spot, add the “Player of the Game” info in the right spot, and publish the post. The code is the same every time, and doing that saves me from manually opening the visual editor every time I want to publish a game story. It works flawlessly, re-creating the page complete with custom fonts, custom columns, etc. —except is just doesn’t pick up on the column background when I post from a third-party editor.
Just one more thing as background: the reason I want to use a third-party editor is that it really speeds my workflow when I can open MarsEdit or Ulysses, type my article, and upload quickly from there.
I’m glad to record a screencast if that would help you visualize what’s happening. What’s the best way to get it to you?
Thanks this is very helpful!
Ok, so the reason the CSS background for the column isn’t picked up is because the way the Design Options work in the page builder is they are saved in a hidden “custom field” that is related to the current post and then outputed as CSS on that post. If you copy/paste into a new post the column background won’t work because the CSS is on the original page.
I have a better solution for you though. Just add some css to your site like this:
.rts-gray-column .vc_column-inner {
border: 3px solid #dd890b;
background: #9e9e9e;
padding: 20px;
}
This would be added at Theme Panel > Custom CSS or in a child theme’s style.css file. And you can add any extra styles you want to it.
Then all you have to do is give the classname to any column where you want it to take affect – https://cl.ly/oAXj
And the best part is now if you ever want to change the design of these columns you can do it in the CSS panel and it will affect all the columns on the site automatically. With the current method if you wanted to alter the design you would have to do it manually.
Make sense?
- AJ
ps: Your site came out nice, good work!
Thank you! I knew you’d be able to figure out what was going on. (And I appreciate the nice words about my site. Your theme is fantastic, and it’s made a huge difference—not only in how the site looks, but in how I’ve been able to use it in my business.)
So what you’re saying, I think, is that I can create any number of column and row formats using that classname, add it to my CSS panel, and I will be all set? That is ingenious! Thank you for your help. Your theme is great, your support is great, and I recommend Total every chance I get!
Sorry for the delay, I wasn’t feeling too good lately.
Yes, you can create any number of custom classnames (just make sure the classname is unique, for example in my provided code I used “rts-” at the front which is a prefix for your site. Then you can have any number of custom column styles to re-use
I am glad you like the theme! I hope you are having an awesome weekend
If you need anything else just let me know via a new comment.

Hi
- Navigation Bar Module > Settings > Design: If you choose Button Style > Clean Color: Hover does not work (everything else does).
- Is there a way to toggle this Navigation bar to open and close when button (or a header) clicked
Thanks M<
Also some issues with the Navigation Bar:
- Submenus appear as parent menus, not as child underneath their parent
- Adding font Awesome Icons to menu CSS Classes like (fa fa-home) make the icon stick right next to the Menu Lable. how to add a space between the menu and its icon (margin or padding)?
Regards M<
Hi,
1. Thanks for the heads up on the button hover. This is a conflict of !important attributes I will add a fix for the upcoming update to hopefully be released by the end of today.
2. You could insert the module inside a Toggle module if you want.
3. Correct this module because of all the various styling options available can’t natively support dropdowns. I am working on a new module to release early 2018 called “Advanced Menu” which won’t have all the built-in color options but instead a few default styles to choose from which will support dropdowns as well as different styles (navbar, toggle. full-screen and off-canvas).
4. Adding the font awesome class directly to the menu class isn’t ideal because of how font awesome work, it’s best to insert the full html into the label – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/adding-icons-menu-items/
I’m not sure what you are trying to do exactly but depending what you are doing you could also consider using 3rd party menu plugins such as “UberMenu” to create a full custom menu.

Hi. I started to alter the content of the footer bottom yesterday but got distracted. When I came back to it, the footer bottom itself was in default setting but I couldn’t find the Footer Bottom tab under Appearance/Customize. I don’t know how I made that happen and it’s my bad but how do I get the Footer Bottom tab back?
Hi,
It’s possible it was hidden under Theme Panel > Customizer Manager. Can you check? This panel is used to simply “hide” settings. For example lets say you already setup the footer exactly how you want it you can then hide the section so that it’s not available in the Customizer to slim things down as you don’t need to use those settings any more.
The other possibility is if you are using the footer builder located at Theme Panel > Footer Builder that it was disabled from there.
- AJ
Thanks for the pointers AJ. It wasn’t hidden under Customizer Manager. When I went to Theme Panel>Footer Builder it was enabled there. I thought I’d try disabling it, then re-enabling, and that worked. So I’ve now successfully altered the Footer Bottom.
what is the difference between the original Visual composer, TOTAL theme and Visual composer Professional?
Hi,
The Visual Composer plugin was actually renamed recently to WPBakery Page Builder which you can see here – https://codecanyon.net/item/visual-composer-page-builder-for-wordpress/242431
This is the plugin included with the theme and can be used to create your pages – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JyW4yAyTl0
I’ve never heard of “Visual composer Professional” and it’s not something created by the plugin developers that created the original plugin. Where did you see this? It’s possible someone is selling or providing a modified version of the plugin illegally.
- AJ
this looks 100% like the original visual composer. thats why I am very confused.
This is actually a very different plugin. Unfortunately the page builder developers made a new plugin named Visual Composer and renamed their original plugin WPBakery Page Builder. which is very confusing.
This one when you use it it saves your content as HTML in WordPress as opposed to shortcode (in my opinion that’s way worse because of the lack of flexibility).
That said, you can use this plugin instead if you prefer, it works with any theme.
- AJ
So I purchased WPBakery Page Builder for WordPress (formerly Visual Composer) again for 6 months for 45$ and tried to install or activate it inside wordpress, but it doesn’t work. the funny thing is: it’s not possible to create a support ticket without a valid license…haha.
So what now? Do I also have to buy again a Total – Responsive Multi-Purpose WordPress Theme License?
Is this the way to go? To spend every 6 month 100$?
Sorry, I am a little dissapointed. I use TOTAL now since 1 year and just wanted to upgrade to the new Visual Composer or Page Builder or Visual Composer Premium or whatever. And when I understand it right, they will not support the “OLD” Visual Composer anymore und try to push the new Visual Composer Premium now.
Hi,
You do not have to buy the plugin to update it (request a refund). I provide updates for the plugin via the theme, it’s all explained in the docs – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/
And no, you do not have to re-buy Total for updates, updates are ALWAYS free.
Also one isn’t an “old” Visual Composer and one a “new” one they are 2 very different plugins. They work very differently and the one you have been using is still and will still be supported by the developers and as long as it’s used with the Total theme I will support and update it for my customers.
So, all you have to do is update your theme and you will see a notice at the top of your WP dashboard to update any bundled plugins (Visual Composer, Slider Revolution….etc). Like shown on the screenshot here – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/update-plugins/
Now…if you want to “switch” to the other Visual Composer plugin you can (it’s not an upgrade it’s a different plugin) and you can just go download it for free from their website.
Personally. I find the original builder to be better and way more flexibly. Also there are TONS of addons for the original plugin and there aren’t any for the new one. Most popular themes use and will continue using the original plugin.
Does this make sense? Just let me know if you are confused about anything or have any issues updating your theme and included plugins. You never have to “re-buy” anything. If you want to submit private tickets then you will have to renew your theme support license, but updates and support via the comments are always free
- AJ
Ok, I will try to get a refund here. So if I renew my Total license I also renew always my VC lincese and get the new features? Thanks for your help.
Hi,
Renewing your Total license is 100% optional. You ONLY need to do that if you want to submit private tickets here – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/
Updates are 100% free…If you follow the documentation you can update everything right now without paying anything.
Make sense?
- AJ
Ok. I just was confused because I got the message from the VC within TOTAL:
There is a new version of WPBakery Visual Composer available. View version 5.0.1 details. Automatic update is unavailable for this plugin. To receive automatic updates license activation is required.
Oh yes, this message was part of the old plugin, it will not show anymore after updating your theme
- AJ
Now its working. Thanks AJ!
How do you earn money if updates are free forever?
To be honest, I will stay with TOTAL also because I’ve never seen a better and faster support then yours! HUGE COMPLIMENT!
I make money from new purchases and from support renewals. Most customers purchase the theme for more than 1 website and that’s where I make most money from theme sales is from repeat customers.
As long as Total keeps selling I can continue it’s development and provide support and updates for many years to come
So make sure to recommend it to your friends!
- AJ
Hi AJ. I have some problems after your reply. Can you check them?
1) I cant and 2 field to post type grid in same time: Video: https://cl.ly/1V2R2r0y3w0B
2) Add field before image in post type grid doesnt work. Strange Video: https://cl.ly/3z1q233o3M2c
3) I think auto load next post plugin dont support Total, or you can view it as developer
video links dont work. I updated them
1) https://youtu.be/bl-esBdz73I
2) https://youtu.be/f-y5rPWs9rY
Hi,
1&2. That’s because they are both called “custom_blocks” sorry I didn’t realize previously the errors in the original code. Give them unique names:
add_filter( 'vcex_post_type_grid_entry_blocks', function( $blocks, $atts ) {
// Add new section after media
$blocks = wpex_array_insert_after( 'media', $blocks, array(
'myprefix_category_tag' => function() {
return '<span class="kateqoriya">'. get_the_category( get_the_ID() )[0]->name .'</span>';
}
) );
// Add new section after date
$blocks = wpex_array_insert_after( 'date', $blocks, array(
'myprefix_views' => function() {
return do_shortcode('[views]');
}
) );
print_r( $blocks );
// Return blocks
return $blocks;
}, 10, 2 );
Notice “myprefix_category_tag” and “myprefix_views”.
And you can’t use $id because it’s not defined make sure to use get_the_ID()
Also whenever adding custom blocks make sure to use unique names to prevent any conflicts with future theme updates.
3. I would recommend using a different plugin. I looked through the code and it has quite a bit of issues. First it won’t work with any theme by default – https://cl.ly/oANU – so you have to enable support for the plugin like this:
add_action( 'after_setup_theme', function() {
add_theme_support( 'auto-load-next-post' );
} );
I didn’t find that anywhere in the docs, but if you look at the code nothing will happen unless you do this first.
Also the javascript is all coded to only work for themes coded in an exact way. For example it requires an article tag on the post with an ID equal to the post ID – https://cl.ly/oAPn
To be honest this plugin could be coded in a much better way and it will require highly modifying either the plugin to work better with all themes or modifying the theme to make it work (which could potentially break current customer sites since it requires altering the theme’s native HTML).
Have you tried other plugins?
- AJ
