Hi, I am using the top bar on mobile only. I have the content for the topbar targeting a content from a page. There is a lot of space at the bottom of the topbar. I am wondering how to make the space smaller. I have already tried lowering the padding in the customization section.

Are you sure the space isn’t coming from the default page builder column margin? https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/visual-composer-spacing/

Hi, I want to add subscribe to my site. You have mailchimp widget. must I do another things for notification post to users auto? Your widget is enough? Or I must do another things or settings in mailchimp account?

Hi,

All the settings are done on the mailchimp side. The theme just allows you to add your mailchimp form to the page. But also you don’t have to use the theme’s widget mailchimp has a built-in form builder if you prefer to create your own styled forms: https://kb.mailchimp.com/lists/signup-forms/how-the-form-builder-works

Dear sir/madam,

I am now working with the total theme for a couple of months and I must say that it works way better than expected! nevertheless I can’t figure out how to adjust the colour of the title of a specific page I made.

I am currently working to give every page an image banner with the title of the page “in” this image. But, some of these images have a white background, resulting in not being able the read the title because it is white as well. I tried to figure out how to change the title text colour to black instead of white but, couldn’t find how.

Could you please help me solve this? I think I might have to write some CSS code to change it, but I have no idea of writing CSS code….

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Thank you for your patience (I’ve been dealing with the flu lately).

To be honest I think if you are creating a custom header for each of the pages maybe using the page builder would be better and give you more control over each page.

Example video: https://cl.ly/ovX8

Especially if it isn’t a ton of pages this method may work best and you can insert anything into the header.

Now if you want to use the default page title and the background style to change the color on each page you will use some custom CSS. You can do it like this: https://cl.ly/ovaw

I’m glad you like the theme!

Good day. I cat add read more tag to the text. When i add it, i see in the editor panel the line more, but on the site there is now this function and i see the whole text. I need this function in the text block for ordinary pages ( not blog). Thank you

Hi there,

Can you please provide an example? The More tag in WordPress is only used for archives. Pages don’t have an archive so I’m not quite sure what you are trying to do.

Are you trying to create a toggle button?

Another question -

Say, I have a text block in a row, and the row has a photo background. That one text block is the only item in the row. I’ve added an opaque or semi-transparent background to the text block, something like black with Alpha at 30%, so that you can see the photo through the text block, shadowed by the opaque background.

The text in the text block is of so few words that it doesn’t fill the entire width of the text block. Because of that, the shadow effect created by the opaque background of the text block is much wider than the text. In other words, it’s not a good fit, and it needs to be narrower to better fit the width of the actual text.

I know that in the Text Block Settings I can set the Width of the text block to a specific width, something narrow enough to better fit the width of the actual text. But that doesn’t help when visitor reduces his browser window to something smaller, in which case the line of text is wrapped to a smaller width but the width of the text block with its background stays the same, which makes it too wide.

Is there an entry I can put in the Width box of the Text Block Settings to cause the width to change as the browser window is resized? Maybe something like “max=700px” so that the text block will have a specified max width but will automatically be reduced if the browser window is reduced?

If not, I guess I could split the row into two columns and place the text block in one column while leaving the other column empty. With that, the text box width would automatically adjust with the auto-adjusting width of the column.

Hi,

The text block has a max-width of 100% already in the theme’s CSS so if you give your textblock a width of 700px then that will be the max width at which it can be displayed.

But you may want to check out the Total “Image Banner” module instead which is basically created for this sort of thing: https://cl.ly/ovhx

Okay, thanks. I’ll look at it.

AJ,

Here’s a question on a different topic -

I built our site to be responsive by using pairs of duplicate content rows. For each pair of content rows on any given page, one of the rows of content is formatted to be visible on desktop and tablet only (hidden on phone), and the other is formatted to be visible on phones only.

I’m finding that the site loads fast enough on desktops and tablets. But the contents are slow load on phones as one scrolls down the pages. I had always wondered about that, as to what was making the contents slow to load on phones, other than the fact that phones are slower than desktops, even on wi-fi. Then it recently dawned on me that it had to do with the animation I’ve applied. So, I went into the phone rows on a couple of pages and removed the animation. That did the trick for speeding up the content loads for those pages.

So, it looks like I’m going to need to go back in and remove the animation from all of the contents in all of the phone rows on every page. But before I do that, I thought maybe you might suggest an alternate approach.

Thanks for all your help.

Regarding the animation. I don’t experience this when checking on the iPhone. I don’t have a note to check, basically the animation works as soon as you stop scrolling so if you are still swiping the animation won’t happen until you lift your finger up or after some time.

But personally I would remove all animation on mobile. As it’s not needed at all. People looking at a website on the phone most likely just want quick info or a phone number/address, they aren’t looking for pretty animations or cool affects (save that for desktop – the majority of your users).

ps: For things like mobile margins and paddings a lot of customers use this: https://codecanyon.net/item/responsive-for-visual-composer/20085272

Every bit of your comment above “But personally …” is absolutely correct, and I wholeheartedly agree. That is something I began to realize after getting quite a ways into building the website. Fancy stuff is wasted on phone users. And if visitors can’t find that basic info quickly, they’re gone or frustrated or both. Plus, as you say, our analytics are telling us that the vast majority of our visitors are desktop. And I’d that most of the phone users who return for more likely do the return on desktop.

We’ll look at the margins and padding link you provided. Thanks for that.

Just to let you know, the reason that you didn’t experience the slowness due to animation of the text blocks while checking the site on iPhone is that the only page you visited was the homepage, and I had already removed all the animation from all of the text blocks on the homepage.

Hello AJ,

About three weeks ago I ask you if there a way to decrease the size (width) of the spaces between the menu items in the main horizontal menu in the header?

Also, I said that I’m using a child theme.

You kindly responded immediately “Very easy with CSS but depends on the header style you are using, which are you using?”

Sorry, but I got tied up and never got back to you, not even to thank you for your reply. Didn’t mean to do that. But every time I thought about getting back to you, something else came up to distract me.

The header style I’m using is One – Left Logo & Right Navbar. See https://resourceanalytical.com/.

If you could please provide the CSS and let me know where to enter it, I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks.

That “Now” and “New” formatting I entered above didn’t result in the spacing I was trying to illustrate.

Oh sorry, the code I gave you is to increase the space, not reduce it (normally what people want).

To reduce it you can use this code instead (remove the code I previously sent):

body .navbar-style-one .dropdown-menu>li>a {
    padding-lefT: 0;
    padding-right: 0;
}

This will remove all the spacing on the link there is still some spacing added to the inner elements. If you want to remove even more I can give you some extra code and if you want to put some back just change the 0 to something like 1px or 2px. The default is 4px.

- AJ

Thanks. Will use that, instead. I hadn’t already added the code you previously provide, but instead waited for your last response.

Is it possible to change the position of the title to be before the image in Grid Builder. So the elements are in this order. Title > Image > Excerpt > Read More Button. Thanks

Are you using the “Grid Builder” under WPBakery Page Builder > Grid Builder? If so, then you do have full control over the elements since this function allows you to create any layout you want.

Example: http://www.wpexplorer.com/envato-market-plugin-guide/

Just make sure to disable the image from the top area: https://cl.ly/ovJa – which is the default featured image location.

Hi, i just migrated a site to a godaddy account. I use ultimate addons for visual composer and total theme In the new site i cannot use the admin to edit pages, visual composer options are gone All plugins and theme are updated When changing theme options become available again Tried using an old version of the theme but that didn’t work

I need to continue using ultimate addons + total in this site, i don’t really know if it has something to do with Godaddy since in my personal development hosting it works fine.

Hi,

If you switched to the default Godaddy hosting it’s really not meant for WordPress and most likely the issue you are having is a memory limit problem and you may have to increase it – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/increasing-memory-limit-to-php/

Have you noticed any errors in your server error logs or on the site?

Ultimate addons is also a massive plugin so if you are running that plugin you should make sure your hosting your site on a good webhost, otherwise you may not have enough resources or it will be very slow to use.

Honestly, I personally never recommend Godaddy hosting. Not only is the hosting bad all my experience with their support has also been horrible. That said, if you use their Managed WordPress Hosting solution it will run WordPress decently and quite a lot of Total customers do use it. If you are using this one and have issues it may not be hosting related, there may just be some other issue from the migration or a conflict with a 3rd party plugin.

For WordPress hosting I typically recommend Flywheel, WPEngine, Kingsta, Cloudways or Siteground.

If you do want, you can send us FTP and WP logins via a private ticket and we can try and figure out what’s going on but if it’s simply server errors there isn’t anything we can really do but provide recommendations – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/

- AJ

hey, as always thank you. The strange thing is that it only happens when Total is active, not with other themes… and no debug messages are thrown. BUT the word “massive” made me think, so i disabled all ultimate addons modules i am not using and voila, now it works.

I know Godaddy is no good option, but some clients just don’t hear..

Thanks a lot!

Great!

Definitely sounds like a memory limit issue I would recommend increasing it to at least 256MB if possible – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/increasing-memory-limit-to-php/

Disabling modules you aren’t using is a great idea! I don’t have options yet in Total for the custom Total modules (will be adding a control panel though in the next big update) but you can use some code via a child theme to disable modules using the “vcex_builder_modules” filter. If you give me a list of items you don’t want I’ll send you the code to add to your child theme.

Hi, You have been very helpful so far. Is there is master list of classes and properties somewhere? I need to change the font for blog posts at both the single post level and the blog page level. Thanks!

Hi,

There isn’t a master list of this (it wouldn’t be helpful anyway). If you want to use Custom CSS and are not sure what class to target simply inspect the site in the browser to see what class to target – https://developers.google.com/web/tools/chrome-devtools/inspect-styles/

Of course for changing fonts there are also options under Appearance > Customize > Typography but they are more “global” if you want to get very specific such as using a different font for your blog post and your blog entry then CSS is the way to go.

Also if you aren’t sure what class to target just ask and I’ll let you know but tell me exactly where you want to change things.

- AJ

I’m new to Wordpress. I was able to inspect the styles, but still unable to successfully construct a Custom CSS. I am trying to change the font size of the blog-entry-excerpt for all blog posts that appear on the Blog page. Thanks.

Hi,

Well Custom CSS isn’t related to WordPress at all, it’s just the common language used for design. If you are new to CSS I can totally help with some small tweaks like this ;) But there are also awesome plugins out there you can use to click on any element and change the design such as Yellow Pencil – http://www.wpexplorer.com/customize-wordpress-theme-design/

So to alter the font size of the blog entry excerpt your code would look something like this:

body .blog-entry-excerpt { font-size: 1.2em; }

How to add custom CSS: http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/making-css-edits/

If you notice I am targeting both the body element and the .blog-entry-excerpt – the reason to target the body element is to give your code priority over any tweaks inside the theme. Alternatively you could use !important tags like this:

.blog-entry-excerpt { font-size: 1.2em !important; }

Also in my example I am using em values (1.2em) but you could use pixel values if you prefer such as 16px. The reason to use em values is to keep the fonts on your site relative so if you ever want to increase/decrease the fonts on the whole site you can simply target the body tag.

I have an Update (4.5+) but I can’t upload it in Wordpress. I get, “Update Failed: Download failed. cURL error 7: couldn’t connect to host”. I can install it using FTP but I’m not sure which Folder to add. Please advise me. Many thanks. Sean.

Hi AJ,

I’ve had a problem with my Hosting and I’ve had to reinstall Total. I’ve clicked the install for the Slider and Templetara but the latter has failed. I have the following message:

“Download failed. cURL error 7: couldn’t connect to host, Plugin not activated. A higher version of Templatera is needed for this theme. Please update the plugin.”

Do I have to but the Plugin and upload it?

Many thanks.

Sean.

Hi Sean,

The cURL 7 error is server related the issue is your server is restricting access to files on your own server. All the bundled plugins are inside the theme, which means they are on your own server, so if you can’t install or update them it means your server isn’t letting you access your own files. You should contact your hosting company so they can fix that for you.

Otherwise you can always locate the plugin inside the theme at Total/framework/plugins/

- AJ

Hi AJ,

I’ve been able to find the Plugins and upload them, thank you.

I’ve copied your message to my Host.

Sean.

Hi AJ,

I’m trying to set a slower transition on the toggle bar. But it doesn’t work.

toggle-bar-wrap {

transition: all 3s ease-in-out !important; -webkit-transition: all 3s ease-in-out !important; -o-transition: all 3s ease-in-out !important; -moz-transition: all 3s ease-in-out !important; }

What am I doing wrong? Regards, Tonny

Yes! it does the trick, great work AJ! Thank you :)

And last but not least, is there a way to move the close arrow (toggle close) inside the box as well? https://www.fortadvocaten.nl/fort-advocaten-amsterdam-act/ or do I have to do this with CSS en call for different @media rules?

Yes you can move it as well, it’s basically the same thing as moving the bar:

 remove_action( 'wpex_outer_wrap_before', 'wpex_toggle_bar_button' );
add_action( 'wpex_hook_wrap_top', 'wpex_toggle_bar_button', 0 );

Add it inside your previous code that was hooked on init.

But then again you’ll need to use CSS to change it’s position as well, but you probably would want to change it to an absolute position, not static.

Hi, I would like to add a | divider between the menu item. I managed to do it easily enough with

.navbar-style-three .dropdown-menu>li>a>span.link-inner:after { content: ’|’; }

But I can’t seem to remove the last-child separator. I tried span.link-inner: NOT :after, I tried to select the last-child, but it doesn’t work. Any idea why ?

+ It would be a nice snippet to add ;)

Using your method to remove from the last item would simply require this added code:

.navbar-style-three .dropdown-menu > li:last-child > a > span.link-inner:after { display: none; }

But you could also use borders instead like this (this is what I prefer):

.navbar-style-three .dropdown-menu > li {
    border-right: 1px solid #ddd;
}

.navbar-style-three .dropdown-menu > li:last-child {
    border: 0;
}

.navbar-style-three {
    padding-top: 15px;
    padding-bottom: 15px;
}

.navbar-style-three .dropdown-menu > li > a {
    height: auto;
    line-height: normal;
}

.navbar-style-three .dropdown-menu > li > a > span.link-inner {
    padding-top: 0;
    padding-bottom: 0;
}

- AJ

Your solution is way way cleaner, it’s very nice of you and a really cool snippet to add ;) Thanks a lot !

Hi, after the last update for me it’s impossible to work on the site. I modify for example a text and when I close the text block the page go to the bottom and I have to return up, everytime I try to do something…

This was a bug in WordPress 4.9 but was fixed a few updates ago. Make sure to update your theme and the Visual Composer (WPBakery Page Builder plugin) to the latest versions. Then clear all site and browser cache since it was caused by a javascript change in WordPress you need to make sure all cache is cleared.

- AJ

Hi AJ, as you know I am using a different Post Type Creator than you recommend :) so here`s my problem: I have disabled the 40px (customizer and VC) margin at the bottom of the page everywhere but it keeps showing up in my single view post types. Is there a way to unset this in the functions ?

If you alter the 40px bottom margin for the page builder columns it gets changed globally, it’s literally impossible to not change for all pages/posts. Can you share the URL with the issue so I can take a look?

I answer hundreds of people each week and I do try and remember as many people as I can, unfortunately if you shared the URL before I don’t remember it, sorry :(

- AJ

Quick one for you: the mobile menu icon is getting hidden on screens narrower than 845px. Any idea why?

http://growingleadership.com/

No problem at all! I appreciate your patience through sorting this all out!

Oh no I appreciate your patience! I’m the one that was mistaken. Have a great rest of the day and if you need anything else or that code doesn’t quite work for you let me know!

Well it seems to be working perfectly now, so I’ll let you know! Thanks again

this theme is rtl ready ? if yes have you any demo about it ?

Yes, please have a look here: http://totaltheme.wpengine.com/features/theme-features/rtl-ready/

I don’t have any RTL specific demos but that’s a great idea!

Let me know if you have any other questions,

AJ

Hi AJ –
hope you’re doing well.
Happy new year!

I just have a quick question.
How can I remove the metadata on top of a post?
I don’t want the post to show ‘comments’ or ‘author’ up at the top.

http://globalpacksource.com/2018/01/what-color-is-your-tube/

I’ve also set the title to disable yet it still shows up above the meta data.

Thanks!

HI,

I am doing well, I hope you are as well ;)

Simple disable the Meta from the blocks in the Customizer – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/blog-single-post-builder/

But also if you want you can use the new Dynamic template function – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGYuBjqkj8Q – to create a custom layout for your blog posts.

Hi, just bought your theme and want to import a demo: what is the difference between the “Base Demo” and the “Base Light Demo”?

The Base Demo has a lot of extra pages from the original demo that showcase all the shortcodes, feature pages..etc and the base light only uploads a few stock images to make the import much faster:

One thing that confuses customers sometimes and want to make clear is that EVERY setting/layout/color you see on any demo can be applied to the theme. You don’t have to import any specific demo. For example if you like the way the portfolio looks on one demo but you like having a black header like on another demo those are just controls you can access in the theme. Importing a demo usually is so you can start out with a look closer to what you want. The base demos don’t use ANY customizer settings they are the default way the theme looks. All these 2 demos are are pages created with the page builder with dummy content – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JyW4yAyTl0

If you do have any other questions or issues please let me know!

- AJ

Love this theme so much I bought it a second time :D I don’t think I’ve ever done that lol :D

Hi,

The menu item is just missing the “local-scroll” classname to tell it it should have a smooth scrolling affect. Please see here: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/creating-local-scroll-menu/

- AJ

Ahhhhhhhhhh Got It! I would have never thought of that lol :D

Thank you very much :)
