What is the way to change this colors: http://prntscr.com/i9dxer

Hi,

You can change this via the Accent color option: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/accent-color/

Or if you ONLY want to change the color here then you can use CSS. Example:

body #sidebar .widget_nav_menu .current-menu-item > a, body
 .widget_nav_menu_accordion .widget_nav_menu .current-menu-item > a { background: #000; }

Hi AJ,

Is it possible to use other page builders for custom headers and footers (Elementor in this case)? Thanks!

Yes, and actually in the last update I added support for Elementor so you can create an Elementor template and choose it from the dropdown selector.

- AJ

Nice, thanks!

I have a problem with the woocommerce – shop catalog page. I understand that this is basically an archive page. In the customizer we currently have 2 sections for woocommerce. I guess one from the theme and one from woocommerce itself. The latter has an option to set what I want to show on the shop page.

I have set this to “categories” but as the screenshot shows it does not work and (some) products are shown as well. These are not featured products or sth. just regular products. The products only option works as expected.

See screenshot attached: https://ibb.co/kq6czR (I have tested in live site as well not only within customizer)

Wow. Thank you so much. That worked like a charm! :D

And by the way since I cannot comment on other topics here. The „bluedolphin“ guy who just mentioned the issue that visual composer sends him always to the bottom of the page on each action: In the top right corner on the page edit Screen click on „Screen Option“ and disable „full height editor for distraction-free editing“. That did the trick for me. :-)

Full height editor is working for me just fine, but maybe there is a browser bug with certain browsers. Thanks for the tip!

Make sure you have your license active under Theme Panel > Theme License as the update should be available this weekend. I am uploading the theme right now to my live demos site so I can check all demos, all builder modules and all customizer settings to make sure there aren’t any bugs before pushing out the live update.

Hi, we have website that uses the Total theme, and since a few days it’s giving us an error when we try to log into the back-end of Wordpress, while the front-end still works fine… It’s a 502 proxy error:

“Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request GET /wp-admin/index.php.

Reason: Error reading from remote server”

I contacted our webhost and he gave us an error-report and said he suspected it was software malfunction related to the theme, so I’m trying it here. Hope you can see anything? The URL is http://www.airsoftadventures.nl/ and this is the log-file our webhosting sent us:

PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Cannot use string offset as an array in /home/public/sites/www.airsoftadventures.nl/wp-content/themes/Total/framework/customizer/customizer.php:806

Hi AJ True, I’m asking an behalf of a friend, whose webdesigner is no longer available and probably acquired the template in his name, and I have a bit more Wordpress knowledge. He thinks everything was always updated but I’m not too sure and can’t check now, due to no access to the backend.

So, I guess this is now more of a pre-sale question as it will work out best if we simply buy a new license. But since I can’t access the back-end of Wordpress anymore, could you advise on how to install the latest version over the old one after we buy a new license?

- Do you think this scenario would work: can I simply upload the new theme-folder in the wp-themes folder (and rename the old folder for safekeeping) - if I can then re-enter the back-end, activate the theme with the new serial number and will it keep all our previous theme settings?

I understand this is not the usual way, but I hope that from your experience you know how to best tackle this issue. Or do you have a pre-sale department I should pose my question to? Thanks in advance!

All your “settings” are always saved to the database so you should never lose any of them when updating the theme, since updating a theme only replaces the files without modifying the database.

That said, sometimes “designers” that don’t know what they are doing will modify the theme files manually (which is never a good idea when dealing with a WP theme) and so updating the theme does affect the site design because those manually edits will be lost. If you don’t know whether the core themes files were modified then making a backup is a good idea.

It looks like your site is running a child theme though, so I don’t believe this is the case here. Since you have a child theme active I’m guessing all modifications were done correctly ;)

But more importantly you should always have full backups of your website incase your server ever crashes. If you don’t have any I recommend doing a full server backup so you have one if anything ever goes wrong. Depending how often you modify your site you may want to schedule backups to run every so often. I personally use VaultPress which does backups in realtime whenever I modify anything on the site and it saves my backups to the cloud.

But yes you can just rename the theme via FTP and then upload the latest one.

The main reason I request that people have an active license for asking questions is more often then not a company will hire a freelancer to setup their website. This freelancer may ask a bunch of questions and we help them setup the client site (sometimes costing us way more money then we earn from the theme) then later on the original company contacts us for additional support. While this doesn’t happen all the time it’s only fair for us to be rewarded for our time and effort ;)

- AJ

Oh, I completely understand you have to draw the line somewhere, and I thank you for your suggestions and assistance. I will indeed make a back-up, purchase a new license and try to get things in order. Again: thanks!!

Hi, I have updated to the latest version of total but somehow the visual composer does not update. I have deinstalled and reinstalled visual composer as usual but it then shows me I can only update to version 5.1.1. Could you let me know why I cant update vc? best regards

Hi AJ, I found out that the license key somehow was not entered (it always have been, I dont know why it was gone).

I have also downloaded the vc file from the url you have sent and it shows the correct version – but it doesnt show this backend (backend its the old one). And still, whenever I click update, it says incorrect license key.

The theme version is 4.5.4.3 acccording to the theme panel.

My developer told me “The theme folder was uploaded replacing the old one. That s what was done.” Really strange, because not only the vc plugin is old but also issues like the instagram grid bug are not gone.

Any idea?

Best regards Sarah

Hi Sarah,

The latest theme version is 4.5.5.1 – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/changelog/ – so be sure to update to the latest version.

- AJ

ps: I am planning to release 4.6 today though if you rather wait for the email/notice and update to the absolute latest version ;)

*edit: the fix for instagram was added in 4.5.4.2 so it should be fixed, if not try re-saving the widget or re-adding it to the sidebar incase it’s a caching issue.

Hi AJ, Loving the theme, but having a battle rendering bold and italic versions of google webfonts – have tried open sans and merriweather sans. Have the correct font set in the Typography > General section of the customizer, and I think the other typography settings are ok. The only way I can get bold showing on the front end is to modify css for that page (using yellow pencil). Tried using Chrome and FireFox Here’s a page on the dev site: https://safeministry.training/dev/online-training-registration/ In the section of the page “How does online training work?” the two paragraphs starting 1. and 2. have bolded text in TinyMCE up to the colon.

I can see that this comes up a few times over the last few years, but its the firtst time I’ve encountered it.

Thanks for any help!

Hi AJ, I think I have worked things out. Most of the problems really were related to me cutting and pasting formatted text from our current live site (with a very different theme). I think I have resolved it now having cleaned out the affected pages, pasting back in plain text and formatting within Total.

Thanks for your patience!

Oh ya! Never copy/paste from another website, email or an editor like Word because you may copy code and more importantly you may copy malicious code without knowing :(

If you ever want to copy paste, copy it then paste it into “text” mode: https://cl.ly/pGrW

Yeah, I was well aware of that with pasting from Word, but I must have had a brain fart doing it from our live site! All good…

Cheers

Hi AJ,

How are you doing?

I am trying to find out where/what I need to edit in order to change the Browser tab page title from Products to Prints.

My shop page is titled Prints, but for some reason when I look at the page source it shows up as the following:

<title>Products – Neil Marcello</title>

I searched via google but most answers pointed to changing Products Archives using Yoast.

Is there an alternative solution for this?

Thank you Neil

Hi again ;)

If you are using WordPress SEO by Yoast then yes you need to edit the settings under SEO > Titles & Metas > Post Types

- AJ

If you are NOT using the plugin the only way to change it is via custom code because the title in the browser (meta title) comes directly from WordPress core.

It is highly recommended to use an SEO plugin, such as Yoast so you can optimize these things which aren’t available in WordPress by default.

Hi AJ,

I tried this but didn’t work:

add_filter(‘gettext’, ‘change_woocommerce_products_page_title’, 20, 3);

function change_woocommerce_products_page_title( $translated_text, $untranslated_text, $domain ) { static $count=0; if( “Products – Neil Marcello” $untranslated_text AND $count = 0 ){ $translated_text = “Prints – Neil Marcello”; $count++; } return $translated_text; }

Hi AJ,

I’m adding a custom post to using the Custom Post Types UI plugin. I’m missing how to set up categories for the custom post type. I’d like to set it up similar to Total’s Portfolio has Portfolio Category options. Thanks! -j

You need to create “Taxonomies” and assign them to the post type. Just click the “Add/Edit Taxonomies” link under CPT UI.

Cool, thanks! Super sweet to be able to do this with Total!!

Do you have a snippet for adding option/setting in buttons and Call to Actions for onclick (google analytics,FB) tracking code?

How are you setting up your tracking? Because you can track clicks using simple classnames (you don’t need custom attributes). That said you can add custom data attributes to the Total buttons like this: https://cl.ly/pFXI

Personally I use and prefer to use custom links for tracking clicks on important links/buttons: https://ga-dev-tools.appspot.com/campaign-url-builder/

Since you can pass-on a lot of data and it integrates instantly with Google analytics.

Re: WordPress and WooCommerce Compatibility

Hello, We have the Total theme for our website that our web developer set up. We are planning on upgrading to the latest plugins and I noticed on the WooCommerce site people were having difficulty with WooCommerce 3.0. Can you let me know what version of WordPress and WooCommerce that the Total theme has been tested? We were planning to move up to WordPress 4.9.2. Thanks!

Hi there,

So the Total theme works on WooCommerce 3.0 but there is a new 3.3 version released a couple days ago. I am updating Total to version 4.5.5 today that will include fixes and optimizations for the absolute latest version of the plugin.

If you didn’t purchase the theme yourself, but you hired a developer in the past to do so, I do highly recommend purchasing your own license to make sure you always have access to support and updates.

A lot of developers will purchase the license on a new ThemeForest account and then assign it over to the end customer once the site is finished so they get access to support, but some developers don’t do this (usually developers that either don’t purchase unique license for each site, are using illegal versions or offer extended support after the site is complete). I do recommend you always have your own license if you will be managing your website from now on to guarantee you have full access to the support and updates ( it’s a small business expense that could really save time and headaches in the long run).

- AJ

Hi AJ, Will PHP version 7.1 work with the Total theme if we upgrade to 7.1? Thanks!

Hi,

Yes I recommend PHP 7.1 ( it’s what I use for development). There are some issues with 7.2 and the page builder when using the backend editor, but those will be fixed soon. So 7.1 is perfect ;)

By the way, WooCommerce released version 3.3 and it had so many bugs they removed it while they fix the bugs and the official current version is 3.2.6 and that’s what I am running on the live demos. Just a heads up ;)

- AJ

Where are the templates that come with Visual Composer? I was able to insert a license key and get those, but I dont see that option any longer.

The Visual Composer (now named WPBakery Page Builder) does have a function called “Template Library” which is a premium addon, if this is what you are referring to and you have your own license for the plugin you can activate it like such: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/activate-wp-bakery-page-builder/

Now, if you are just referring to standard templates like this – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/visual-composer-templates/ – you should still have full access to this, but maybe you’ve disabled or deleted the Templatera plugin which you can always re-install at Appearance > Install Plugins.

I wasn’t quite sure what you were referring to so if this doesn’t answer your question let me know so I can provide further assistance.

- AJ

We bought your Alpha Premium theme some years ago which I know you dropped support for but we have a bit of a crisis in that our site in now non-functional in that, we are told by GoDaddy, it is not compatible with the latest WP platform and crashes the site if we try to use it. If I use any other theme we loose 98% of our content as it was all put under your “Portfolio” content type.

How can we get out of this? Is your Total Responsive similar enough to the old Alpha Premium?

I haven’t looked at your site so I don’t know but in general you will need to spend some time setting things up. Such as going through the customizer and changing any fonts, colors, etc and Total uses a page builder so you’ll want to create your homepage but it’s very easy – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JyW4yAyTl0

Also I believe Alpha used templates so you will have to modify some pages like your portfolio for example if you want to insert it there.

By the way I looked under your username “sunsanvil” and it’s coming up as you haven’t even purchased the Alpha theme (weird). Maybe you got it through a developer?

- AJ

Pretty sure it was purchased here, but not by me: I’m just trying to help a friend with his site. :) Try sspears maybe? It was a long time ago.

It’s not a bit deal of course, just sometimes customers log into the wrong account, it was more of a heads up ;)

Hi Total We have installed the theme on a number of sites . On a recent site whenever you are in the back end editing a page , whenever you take an action it sends yoy to the bottom of the page – very frustrating especially on long pages . Please can you help

Hi AJ everything is up to date and the cache is cleared Please advise

HI AJ any updates as to what we can do Happening on a number of sites that are under development

Hi,

I was asleep, just woke up ;)

Have you tried disabling 3rd party plugins? If everything is up to date and the cache is cleared you shouldn’t be having this issue unless another plugin on the site is breaking things.

Did you want me to log in and see what’s going on? I do see your support license has expired so you can’t submit a private ticket here: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/ – but if you give me an email address I’ll message you directly to see what’s going on. Normally I don’t do this, but since you’ve asked so few questions in the past I’m happy to go out of my way to help you out.

Also can you please explain what you mean by “whenever you take an action”? I assumed by this you mean whenever you click to edit or insert a module in the backend editor, is that correct?

- AJ

Hello AJ,

It’s not a big deal and not due to Total but I’m having repeating problems when editing pages in VC Backend (error screen “Site unavailable”, and page editing is then lost).

My host recommends I activate their “Google PageSpeed Tools” on their manager’s site configuration, this tool having its own caching method and default parameters such as :

ModPagespeedEnableFilters combine_css
ModPagespeedEnableFilters extend_cache
ModPagespeedEnableFilters rewrite_images
ModPagespeedEnableFilters rewrite_css
ModPagespeedEnableFilters rewrite_javascript
ModPagespeedEnableFilters combine_javascript
ModPagespeedEnableFilters pedantic

If you know about this tool, I’d be glad to have your opinion, as I’m afraid this could conflict with WP Super Cache and add uncessary load.

Thanks in advance,

Michel

Hi Michel,

Your hosting company has no idea what they are talking about, doing Google page tweaks won’t help at all with this. The mods listed about are not a bad idea and can increase loading time on the front end by maybe a second at the most (if it’s a large site) but nothing to do with the backend or editing.

The “Site unavailable” error could be a couple things:

  • Browser or computer related, the page builder is javascript driven. If you are editing very large pages and your browser/computer is running out of resources this could happen. I recommend using the page builder only on a new browser without any open tabs just to be safe and if you have an older computer or not very good one avoid having other intensive browser scripts running (such as video players).
  • This could just be your server becoming unresponsive. Check your server error logs (your hosting company should have done that for you). You may have to increase memory limit, max execution time or if you are on a shared server there may be nothing you could do, this could just be related to the fact that the server is running out of resources.

But doing Google PageSpeed optimizations wouldn’t ever fix this sort of thing, these are micro-optimizations to speed up the front-end only.

In the end, my recommendation is to always use a solid host. I don’t know where you are hosted but I highly recommend WPEngine or Flywheel. I personally use WPEngine (I’m on a premium $800/month plan) but their standard plans are very good also.

- AJ

Hello AJ,

Thank you a lot for these explanations.

I’ll follow your advices, and will switch to Flywheel (which I’ve tested when you mentioned them) if annoying problems remain with my current Swiss host (which is not bad though, but doesn’t get involved in Wordpress-related topics)

Bonne journée  (“Have a nice day” in French)

Michel

Hi I’ve just purchased and installed Total and am having trouble making it behave. I’m trying to use a demo as a stop gap but it keep asking to activate the license even though I have already done that. Thanks.

Hi,

Once the license is active it’s actually impossible to see that notice in the demo importer because the license is saved in the database which is checked in the demo importer. If the license is in the database you should see it under Theme Panel > Theme License and the demo importer should be available to you.

Can you double check under Theme Panel > Theme License? Sometimes plugins have activation panels and it can confuse customers as they activate the license plugin instead.

If you want we do also offer private support and we can log in and verify for you – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/

But I can also continue providing help here in the comments ;)

- AJ

Thanks it seems to have sorted itself out, maybe just needed a few hours to confirm activation. Seems all good now. T

Hi AJ,

How do I get the testimonials carousel to show dots for each of my 8 items. It only displays one dot. I am displaying three items at a time. Thanks.

Hi,

It should be showing all the docs but if you are showing 3 at a time and you have 8 items it should be showing 3 dots because when you click a dot it will show the next 3 items ( 8/3 = 2.66).

Can you share the URL with the issue so I can have a look?

- AJ

Reset all the values for number displayed per device type and it fixed it.

Hi AJ,

I have a couple of issues I was wondering if you could please take a look when you get time.

1. How do I get the Breadcrumbs to show the sub-category and category int he right order?

Right now, on this page http://bit.ly/2BIFj2m if you look at the Breadcrumbs, it shows a comma between the sub-category and category.

The order does not follow what a client would expect, i.e., going backwards product to sub-category to category to main page.

2. Is there a way to get the woocommerce tabs as on the product page to show on the mobile devices?

I know that you had a secondary title for Description and Reviews for that purpose, but if the above cannot be done then how do I show the title (that you helped me disable) to show up only on the mobile devices?

Thank you AJ Neil

Hi AJ,

In response to the Woocommerce shop page’s meta title in the browser, while Yoast seems a likely solution, I do recall you or Adrian helping me with switching out the name of the Portfolio (folder name) to the desired name it is currently at (Works).

This also changed the sub menu in the admin panel from Portfolio to Works.

So how come we could change that but not the Products title?

Thanks Neil

HI Neil,

I’m not understanding the question, what are you trying to change for your products? Do you want the slug to be something else so instead of site.com/product/product-name it’s site.com/something-else/product-name/ ?

If you can leave a new comment for this question it will be best, thanks!

- AJ

Hi AJ,

In response to your question, I don’t want to change the slug or permalinks as WooCommerce has a weird setup to begin with where we can’t have Product-Category the same as the

If you go here: http://bit.ly/2EZNtH9 you will notice that this used to be called Portfolio that came with the Total Theme. If you look at the Browser tab, the title says Works – Neil Marcello.

I don’t recall what was done before when it used to be Portfolio.

If you go here: http://bit.ly/2nV808h you will see the browser says Products – Neil Marcello and so I want to change this to Prints – Neil Marcello.

Besides adding a plugin like Yoast, I was wondering where this gets changed, since it was done for the Portfolio switch to Works for my website with help from either you or Adrian.

When I go to the Admin Panel, on the left side menu, I have the folder icon and Works next to it (where it used to say Portfolio).

Since I installed WooCommerce, it shows up as Products. I don’t really care to change this to Prints, but if possible then I would set it up for consistency sake.

Thanks Neil PS> Sent you a screen shot via email as I don’t know how to send it on here.

Hi, AJ, I have tried to build up the page following the video you gave to me. But I have another problem now. I have imported the base lite demo at the beginning and found out that whenI deleted some pages, the head (main menu) there was still showing those pages’ name. I guess this is related to the setting. I can not figure out how to change. Then I thought maybe it could be better to use some simpler demo. So I imported another demo named as James (if I remember correct). At this moment I realized that somehow these two demo were combined. Lots of contents were above each other…..After this I deleted all the pages (at ‘pages’ in the dashboard). But finally when I started to build up my own page, some contents from two demos which I had imported and deleted were still there. I do not know how to delete these contents including the back background (I think this is from demo James) completely…..I have to bother you again. Many thanks!

Hi there,

  • When you delete pages they may still be in the menu until they are removed from the trash or if the menu was using custom links (most likely).
  • Yes, in WordPress demos work by importing pages, media, posts, menus, widgets. Because of how WordPress works each one of these has unique ID’s in the database that are incremental as it’s uploaded to the site and if your site already had content there is no way to verify what content was there before and what wasn’t prior to an import. For this reason content can’t be auto deleted by the demo importer and importing one demo over another can cause issues. It’s always best to import a demo on a fresh demo.

A demo is basically a “full site”...

Now I am working on releasing a new function to insert pre-designed layouts, custom headers, footers and “blocks” onto any page which should be ready with Total v5. This will be different since it would only tweak a single page and I think maybe more of the type of thing you may be looking for.

  • When using the reset plugin, look at the different options and only check the ones you wish to reset – http://www.wpexplorer.com/reset-wordpress-website/ – for example, don’t check the “Users” or the “Options” tables. The Users because you don’t want to remove yourself from the site and the “Options” because your theme license is saved in the options table.

If you have a basic idea of what you want to accomplish for your site though maybe importing a demo is just a waste of time. Most customers don’t import demos because it’s very quick and easy to simply set things up how you want them from the start. And if all you really want is to get the “look” of a site (like the colors/width) you can run the importer but only select to import the Theme Settings then you just add the content yourself.

I understand how importing a demo may help learning the in-and-outs but there are also plenty docs for that. So one good place to start would be to just go to Appearance > Customize and tweak the global setting for the site (like the colors, header style, enable/disable stuff, etc).

Then go here – http://www.wpexplorer.com/reset-wordpress-website/ – and learn how to build a page and create your homepage. Once you’ve played around with the builder I think you’ll realize how easy things are and you’ll have your site setup in no time!

- AJ

Many thanks AJ. Glad to get your reply. I will do WP reset once I can sit down. I will do as you suggested….

Always happy to help, just let me know if you run into any issues or have any follow up questions! Also I am constantly updating the docs – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/ – so if you find something is missing our outdated, let me know and I’ll add a new doc or update the outdated one ;)

Hi AJ,

I’m having an issue where the Rev Slider is not displaying on the front page of my site. I wouldn’t swear to it, but I think I updated that plugin today, and that’s when it stopped working. Do you know if this is an issue, or have any thoughts on what might be causing it? (And do I need to contact the plugin makers directly for support, or do you handle it since it was included with the theme?)

David

Well, I’ve discovered that the conflict is apparently with W3 Super Cache, which I’ve had all along. Any thoughts on a setting that might be causing the conflict?

Well, never mind! I got it working. In case it comes up with anyone else — I actually figured out through trial and error that if I change my JS minifier setting in W3 Super Cache from the default to “Narcissus,” the slider displays. (And this also fixed a conflict with a premium ticker I had purchased, too, so double-bonus.) Thanks again for your help!

Oh awesome! Yes, any minifying plugin can only “guess” as to what can and can’t be minified/combined so it’s very important when setting things up to use trial and error.

One thing I do want to mention is if you are using W3 Super Cache it has very hard caching so whenever you update WordPress, the theme or any plugin to purge your cache and clear your browser cache to prevent any possible issues as well.

- AJ

Hi AJ,

I added the following CSS to the WooCommerce Tabs (Description and Reviews) to change it to this font family:

.woocommerce div.product .woocommerce-tabs ul.tabs li.active a {font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif !important;}

The style.css file gets updated just fine, and I also purged all caches, etc for good measure upon reloading, but the font-family is still the same as the body which is Georgia.

I understand from reading other comments that the Customizer only sets/changes the CSS of the secondary title which is not what I want as I disabled that previously due to it being redundant for my page.

Do you have any other suggestions on how to change this particular CSS property?

Here is the link if you need it: https://goo.gl/GdR4Nv

Thank you Neil

Hi Neil,

Your CSS is working perfectly fine when I look at the site. But you are only targeting the active tab in your CSS not all the tabs. If you wanted to target all the tabs change it to this:

.woocommerce div.product .woocommerce-tabs ul.tabs {font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif !important;}

- AJ

Brilliant AJ! It worked!

Thank you Neil
