Hi AJ, I’ve created a Custom Cards layout (awesome by the way!) for some Items I’m displaying as a directory and have used the following Blocks: Feature Image, Heading, Post Terms, Post Excerpt, Theme Button.

The cards are all equal Size, but my question is… with the excerpts being different lengths is there any way to get the Button to align to the bottom of all the cards so it’s always in the same position?

You can see it here: https://startupcroydon.co.uk/Directory-Category/professional-services/

Hi,

Yes it’s possible by adding a margin top of auto to your button (which you can do with the theme’s wpex-mt-auto class). Here is a sample video: https://a.cl.ly/E0uZAeP7

The problem is that in your custom card you are using an Inner row which causes issues with the equal height. You’ll want to place all your items inside the same column like in my example. Based on your design there really isn’t any reason to have the items inside an inner column anyway.

So there are 3 things you need:

1. All the content must be inside the same row. 2. You must enable equal columns height. 3. You need to add the wpex-mt-auto class to the button.

Hi,

i have purchase total theme and deployed on demo server. there is no option of mobile toggle menu, i have seen in your documentation for mobile menu check below taken from documentation;

To alter the mobile menu style log into your WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance > Customize > Header > Mobile Menu.

did not found any Mobile Menu can you please let me know how can i enable this option.

PLEASE REPLY

Hi,

This is Aj the theme author. I hope you had a nice weekend, thank you for your patience. I don’t usually take time off, but I had to for a family matter.

The only reason for the mobile menu settings would not be available in the Customizer would be if you are using the “Header Builder” – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/header-builder/

Otherwise you should see the settings in the Customizer. I made a little video to show you: https://a.cl.ly/4guenWgr

If you can share the URL in question then I can see how it’s setup and provide better support. Thanks!

- AJ

Oh it looks like you submitted a ticket and my support guy replied back to you a couple days ago and the issue was with the installed Max Mega Menu plugin – https://a.cl.ly/DOurq1Ay

I just logged in as well to confirm and you’ve disabled the plugin so the settings are showing up now.

If you do have any other questions, issues or suggestions though let me know! Thanks ;)

Hi, I just upgraded to 5.5.1 from 5.4.5. Now my sticky menu no longer has a drop shadow. I have checked and the new option to have a drop shadow on the sticky menu is enabled. But it is no longer displaying. Can you please check this out. I have this issues on 3 different sites that I have upgraded now. Thank you.

Hi AJ, Here is one site: https://www.mesaspirit.club Thank you for checking.

Hi,

Hope you had a nice weekend. Thanks for sharing the URL. I’m definitely seeing the shadow on the site, see here: https://a.cl.ly/04uW28YJ

So this is clearly a caching issue.

I can see that on your site you’ve removed the version numbers at the end of your scripts (CSS/Javascript) most likely via a plugin. This is actually not recommended because what happens is the files will get permanently cached by the browser so when you update your site you need to also clear your browser cache and there is no way to “force” repeat visitors to clear their cache. So I would highly recommend disabling whatever function or code you are using on your site that’s removing the versions at the end of the scripts.

You can learn more here: https://www.keycdn.com/support/what-is-cache-busting

- AJ

Hi AJ, Thank you for checking and the tip about the version numbers.

Hi AJ,

The latest 5.5.1 update has broken a plugin on our front page. I’ve confirmed this in the development server as well. The plugin was working fine, I updated to 5.5.1 and it stopped displaying on the page. The plugin, Library Bookshelves, is supposed to display under the Staff Picks section. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I installed the plugin locally and it seems to be working fine (the only issue I see is that the plugin uses a custom template output as opposed to making use of the default theme’s page.php or singular.php template file) so the content is not properly centered on the site. But this would have been an issue always present.

I’m not sure what you mean by ” it stopped displaying on the page. The plugin, Library Bookshelves, is supposed to display under the Staff Picks section”. Are you saying that on the live site when you go to a page named “Staff Picks” it’s not showing any items?

Are you able to share logins to the staging/dev server so I can take a look? (your support license is expired so you can’t submit a ticket in which case you can either renew support to do so or simply email me directly to wpexplorer [at] gmail dot com without renewing) and I can take a look and see what’s going on. Thanks!

Hi AJ,

Blog > Archives & Entries > Image Overlay > Category Tag

I want to reduce the black border with CSS around the text, what should I do? Please see attached photo: https://photos.app.goo.gl/KUYteiTT9jsdEkv9A

I’m using CSS: .overlay-category-tag { font-size: 10px; } to shrink the font so I want to shrink the surrounding border.

Thanks.

Hi,

You can modify the padding like this:

.overlay-category-tag a { padding: 1px 5px; }

- AJ

ps: If you are wanting to do a lot of CSS edits to your site you could also consider using a CSS plugin: https://www.wpexplorer.com/wordpress-css-live-editor-plugins/ – this allows you to basically edit any element on your site.

Hi AJ,

Have you tried any membership plugin with recurring Paymments?

Thanks

I personally haven’t tried any, I generally recommend Restrict Content Pro because it was originally created by a friend of mine that I worked with in the past (was recently bought out). We have some a list of some of the most popular membership plugins on our site.

Depending what you need though you could also setup WooCommerce for this sort of thing along with some custom code to restrict content based on the user’s purchases.

- Aj

Hi AJ

Hope you’re doing fine.

I’ve been trying since yesterday to create non-clickable pages because they have little content. Unfortunately, I can’t do it. I saw that you explain the process on this link https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/adding-non-clickable-menu-links/

The problem is that in “appearance” and “menu”, I don’t see “url” nor “CSS classes”. I don’t know where to go and how to do it.

Can you guide me step by step ?

I thank you very much Olivia

Hi Olivia,

So for the CSS classes it may be disabled under the Screen Options tab: https://a.cl.ly/9Zug0QAE

As the for “URL” field, you will only see this when adding “Custom Links” you won’t be able to modify the URL if you are inserting an actual page into the menu: https://a.cl.ly/GGuz2pko

I will update the docs with the additional information!

- AJ

YES AJ, it’s working perfectly ! Thank you very much ! :-)

Great ;) If you need anything else let me know!

Hello, This appears by default in theme home, how I can remove it as I forget Start Creating Better Websites Today

Learn to impress with the latest modern design trends

https://prnt.sc/2xmydjGWjYUO

Do you have a mockup of what you are trying to accomplish?

Also can you share the URL you are working with so I can see what you mean by “space between the header menu and first raw”.

When you use the Transparent header, what happens is it places your content beneath the header so if you want to enable the transparent header globally you would most likely want to create a template to display under the header.

If you can share an example website or image of what you want to archive that would give me an idea of what you want so I can show you how it’s done. Thanks!

- AJ

Hello, Thanks for your reply. I need background to cover header menu items https://prnt.sc/tTe3wCM3ZZR_ I tried to create a template with space and hide page title, but a blank dark space appeared between first raw background and menu items

Can you share the URL so I can see what the space is? There shouldn’t be any space by default. Examples:

I’m thinking maybe the space is coming from either some custom CSS on the site or a specific setting, but I can’t know without looking. Thanks!

Hi AJ,

I just updated the Events Calendar (and Pro) plugins to their v6 update and I am getting the following error now when updating events in the backend:

[18-Sep-2022 19:40:51 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Uncaught ArgumentCountError: Too few arguments to function TotalTheme\Integration\Relevanssi::parse_title(), 1 passed in …/public_html/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php on line 307 and exactly 2 expected in …/public_html/wp-content/themes/Total/inc/integration/relevanssi.php:63 Stack trace: #0 …/public_html/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(307): TotalTheme\Integration\Relevanssi::parse_title(‘dj-dance-party-...’) #1 …/public_html/wp-includes/plugin.php(191): WP_Hook->apply_filters(‘dj-dance-party-...’, Array) #2 …/public_html/wp-content/plugins/pods/classes/fields/pick.php(2795): apply_filters(‘the_title’, ‘dj-dance-party-...’) #3 …/public_html/wp-content/plugins/pods/classes/fields/pick.php(1962): PodsField_Pick->get_object_data(Array) #4 …/public_html/wp-content/plugins/pods/classes/PodsForm.php(243): PodsField_Pick->data(‘pods_meta_li in …/public_html/wp-content/themes/Total/inc/integration/relevanssi.php on line 63

Not sure if it’s related to the Total theme but it mentions the Relevanssi integration so I thought I would bring it to your attention.

Hopefully they push out a fix soon!

- AJ

I just submitted a PR, so yes, hopefully soon. Kind of a major bug.

Hi AJ!

A quick general question regarding fonts: I installed one font (Roboto 300) locally on my site using the Font Manager.

https://www.geistigewelt.tv/

This is the site wide standard font but I want to highlight some passages bold. But the bold text is only slightly bolder than the standard text. There’s hardly any difference. What can I do to get really bold text? Do I have to install a bolder Roboto variant like Roboto 500 in the Font Manager? Will this font be selected when I mark a text als bold?

Thanks a lot!! - Jolopu

Hi,

You are correct, you will need to upload a bold font as well. Bold is 700, semibold is 600 and medium is 500.

Generally 300 is not recommended because it’s too thin to pass accessibility checks. Usually you will find websites will instead use the normal font weight (400) and then apply anti-aliasing to the site which makes them a bit slimmer. This can be done in the Customizer under Typography > General – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/enable-font-smoothing/ (you don’t have to do this, but thought I would mention it since it’s more typical).

- AJ

I switched to 400 as standard font, applied anti-aliasing and uploaded a bold font. Looks great! Thanks a lot!

Great!

Hi AJ,

Up to a few weeks/months ago, there used to be a setting within most WP Bakery modules, that allowed you to make it ‘Always Visible’, Visible at Mobile Breakpoint’, ‘Only visible on Tablet’ etc etc.

I nipped into the back-end this morning and couldn’t find that setting anywhere.

Has it been discontinued?

You have a lot of caching issues on your site, seems like you are always having troubles with that… :(

Yeah, I’d hate to be a theme developer with me as their customer :)

I even blew Google up earlier.

haha, it’s not bad ;) And luckily 99% of customers don’t ever even ask a single question. It’s usually the same 10-20 people. Just means I have a lot of close friends, ha!

Hi again AJ.

1) It is possible to use color palette slug instead of the random number (—wpex-palette-296-color to—wpex-palette-my-color-slug)

It is possible to include this color in the CSS framework? (like wpex-text-gray-50, wpex-text-palette-my-color-slug)

2) With the new flex header style it seems that Sticky Header it’s not working. Can you check? I just updated the theme.

1. The theme uses the ID and not the slug, because slugs can be changed so if you rename your color it will break all your colors.

The reason I used a different naming convention for the color palette is to be consistent with Gutenberg color palettes (same naming convention). Of course you could easily add some code to your site to loop through the colors and add CSS to the site using the theme’s wpex-{} naming convention, but I don’t really see a reason for doing this (just creates added bloat).

2. Sticky should just fine with the Flex headers. Example – https://a.cl.ly/P8u7y6ER – the code for the sticky header is the same for all Header styles, so if it’s not working for the Flex it really shouldn’t be working for any of the header styles. So perhaps there is some child theme code breaking things. Can you share the URL where you are using the sticky header so I can see what’s going on? Thanks!

Hi AJ

I have a page where I have used the “Image Grid” element with around 28 images. But I’ve noticed that when viewing the Media Library from within the Image Grid, then using the Filter Media > Uploaded to this page it does not show all the images, it only shows 18 of them. This is a pain because I wanted to edit the alt texts, captions etc but because they are not all there I have to hunt them down by searching which is fiddly and takes a long time.

Hope I’ve explained this clearly, I can open a support ticket if you prefer.

Hi James,

You could actually copy things over, but it’s a bit complex because you need to use the browser inspector. I recorded a video using the Chrome browser developer tools (important: in my video I cut and pasted the image Id’s you shouldn’t do this incase something goes wrong, use copy/paste instead) – https://a.cl.ly/kpuOZmqB

If you aren’t sure how to do this, you can always send me the logins for the site and I can do it for ya: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/ (please request your ticket be assigned to me, thanks).

- AJ

Amazing AJ! Worked beautifully! Thanks :-)

Great ;)

Hi AJ, Google has been sending a message for a long time: Main problems “The value of the viewport meta tag is not set.”

https://prnt.sc/HGUKorjeZlWX https://prnt.sc/kdaDbowRbnIu

Please help me figure out if this problem is related to Total or is it something else?

Hi,

The theme has the viewport tag added by default (example: https://a.cl.ly/04uWOLyr ) the only way for it to be removed would be if you added child theme code to remove it.

Can you please share your URL so I can take a look.

- AJ

Where can I download Total v5.4.5? I have 5.5.1 and want to downgrade.

Hi,

This is AJ the theme author. There isn’t any way to downgrade. If you want to provide me an email address I can send over the old version though via email.

Why would you want to downgrade? If you are having some sort of issue can you let me know what it is so I can take a look?

I find that 99% of customers that end up reverting back to old versions of the theme the issues they were having turned out to just be cache related so it was a simple fix. Of course if there is an actual bug I will fix it right away, so it’s good to know if customers are having problems. Thanks!

- AJ

Hi AJ,

There was a fatal error after upgrading.

--  bizzuka

What was the error?

It would be good for me to know so I can look into it and if there is an error in the theme i can fix it. Thanks!!

- AJ

Hi AJ, I’m going through the learning curve for my first rigorous WCAG AA compliant site, and I have three accessibility-related questions for you. I think all three are related to Total, or at least the way I’m using Total, but let me know if I’m off-base and these are issues I should be contacting a third-party plugin developer, or someone else about ;)

1. the mobile menu is being flagged (alert not error, but still) as a “broken same page link” for some reason. here’s a screenshot. https://prnt.sc/WFyj0bZlmGu_ I know alerts don’t strictly have to be fixed, but this seems like one that’d be nice to eliminate if it’s not too hard. 2. when I build megamenus, I sometimes do an admittedly hack-ish treatment of column headings. first, I use use # for the link and use CSS to hide the hand cursor, so they don’t look like links if I don’t want people to click them. if I have two columns that contain the same category of pages, I sometimes additionally use the space HTML entity   to make it look like there’s no column head at all. the latter infuriates the WAVE scanner and gives it my only true error. https://new.frcog.org shows the way I’m hacking the megamenu headings (hover over “Service Areas”, and this page shows the error https://wave.webaim.org/report#/https://new.frcog.org/regional-brownfields-steering-committee Is there a better way to achieve the appearance I’m going for without triggering this error? 3. I’m having trouble understanding why some images without alt text correctly trigger an error, like the card carousel images on this report https://wave.webaim.org/report#/https://new.frcog.org/ but other images without alt tags don’t trigger erros, as in the grid images, row background, etc. on this report https://wave.webaim.org/report#/https://new.frcog.org/program-services/transportation-planning/ so I’m wondering if certain elements make the images show up as “decorative” by default and avoid triggering the scanner? or maybe there’s some control I’m not seeing that determines how the images appear to assistive devices? this site has something like 10K images, so it wouldn’t be a terrible thing if all those images didn’t require alt text unless the admin specifically wants to add it, but that doesn’t really seem to be in the spirit of the WCAG AA spec, so I feel like I must be missing something.

Hi,

1. This is a false alert. Notice how the link has a role=”button” as well as aria-expanded=”false” attributes? This tells screen readers that the link actually opens another element.

I wonder if you can ask the checker developers about that.

In order to “eliminate” the notice (which shouldn’t even be showing up) would require changing the menu button from a link to a button element, which “technically” would be “better” and is very easy to change, but customers have added custom CSS to their site to modify the element they will lose their customizations and I try and avoid making core changes to the HTML as much as possible.

2. For the headings on megamenus, the Total theme automatically disables pointer-events to prevent clicking via the following CSS:

.main-navigation .megamenu>.sub-menu>.menu-item.menu-item-has-children>a[href="#"] {
    pointer-events: none;
}

So you don’t need CSS to hide the “cursor” assuming your heading link is just a # symbol.

The theme also adds a noindex tag so it can’t be accessed via sequential keyboard navigation, so it shouldn’t cause any accessibility issues. See here: https://a.cl.ly/8Lu1rBXo

Now, for hiding the heading completely you should still not have issues if you are using # symbol for the link since it will have the negative tabindex and disabled pointer events. But to be extra safe, you can also add CSS to hide the heading, example:

#menu-item-29831 > a {
    display: none;
}

#menu-item-29831 > ul {
    padding-top: 37px !important;
}

Hidden elements should be excluded from keyboard navigation as well.

Now, the theme adds the negative tabindex via javascript, so perhaps the checker is running the check without parsing the javascript first? Or maybe it’s a false positive?

Unfortunately there isn’t a good way of adding the negative tabindex via PHP as there is no way to properly check that an item is inside a mega menu (at least not that I can see – the WP menu Walker is pretty complex). But I’m pretty sure using javascript is fine for this, especially when it runs on DOMContentLoaded

3. The reason you are having an error with the carousel alt is because the images are inside of links so they need alt text which is used for the link – https://accessibility.oit.ncsu.edu/it-accessibility-at-nc-state/developers/accessibility-handbook/mouse-and-keyboard-events/links/all-links-must-contain-either-text-or-an-image-with-alt-text/

I will update the cards so that the featured image has a fallback alt equal to the post title if an alt isn’t set and the link is enabled. This way you don’t need to worry about tagging all images. Thanks for the heads up on this one!

That said, you can also just add some code to your site to automatically set any image alt to be equal to its title this way you will never have a missing alt on the site. Example:

add_filter( 'get_post_metadata', function( $value, $post_id, $meta_key, $single ) {
    if ( ! $value
        && ! is_admin()
        && 'attachment' === get_post_type( $post_id )
        && '_wp_attachment_image_alt' === $meta_key
        && true === $single
    ) {
        $value = get_the_title( $post_id );
    }
    return $value;
}, 10, 4);

But these will just be the image names so it’s not really helpful, while it may remove checker notices it’s horrible for actual usage, so I don’t recommend it.

Want me to send you the updated post cards class with the tweak for the image alts?

- AJ

ps: Your site – new.frcog.org/ – is loading the style.css twice. You should not have the @import inside your child theme’s style.css

Hi AJ, The latest update broke a custom font array that has worked perfectly for years.Now all of the icons show up as stars.

Hey,

I hope you had a nice weekend.

I wasn’t saying to add the snippet to your site…So I’m not sure what you mean by “that snippet broke my site”. I was just mentioning it saying that is what you were doing on your site and I used it to verify the patch I added worked.

For you to fix your site all you have to do is re-install the Total Theme Core plugin, the fix is already live and verified. So log into WordPress and go to Plugins delete the Total Theme Core and then go to Appearance > Install Plugins and re-install the Total Theme Core.

make sense?

- AJ

Hi AJ, Awesome! Should I do the same thing on my other sites that are acting strange.

Probably a good idea. What do you mean by “acting strange” though? If you are having the same issue with the icons then yes.

The official 5.5.2 update will be out today or tomorrow as well.

- AJ

ps: Is this Bob? I feel like I remember your username, but could be wrong!

Hello, i update total theme today and now I can’t access the website + dashboard anymore. It says that the website is undergoing scheduled maintenance. How can I access it again? Thanks Astrid www.das-art.nl

Hi,

The “undergoing scheduled maintenance” screen is a WordPress function that gets added to the site when you are performing updates. Sometimes (rarely) it get’s “stuck” and you have to delete it via FTP. It looks like perhaps you already did this because the page is loading correctly for me.

But your homepage isn’t showing any content, is that normal?

- AJ

No, not normal :-). The image slider doesn’t function anymore. I deleted images from the library to insert new ones but the slider keeps on using old images that are no longer in the media library and doesn’t show the new ones that I uploaded and selected. I figured to leave it overnight, but it still isn’t working. Yes. Thank you for the ‘undergoing maintenance’ reply. I re-installed Wordpress. Astrid

Hi Astrid,

That’s very strange, it would almost be impossible for the theme to use images that don’t even exist on the site. Is your Image Slider using Slider Revolution or the theme’s Image Slider builder element? And have you updated all plugins on the site?

I see your support license has expired so you can’t submit a private ticket. If you want you can renew support or if you don’t want to you can email me directly at wpexplorer [at] gmail dot com with the site logins and I can log in and. have a look to see what’s going on.

It almost sounds like a caching issue on the site. Have you cleared all 3rd party caching? (plugins, server, CDN, Cloudflare..etc)

- Aj

Hi Aj. I setup single post to show related posts. I configure to show related posts on ‘single layout elements’, and related by ‘categorias’. Old posts showing related posts correctly. Newers not. Can help, please? tks a lot. https://bit.ly/3DqDzOR any ideia to help? tks!

i guess i found the problem is in customizing related posts, with single post categories.

Hi,

Sorry, I’m not understand the issue. Did you want to change the related so it doesn’t use categories?

For anyone else wondering here is the guide for adding related items in a custom template – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/related-items-dynamic-template/

- AJ

Hi AJ, I’m looking to recreate a home page like this one https://coppola.qodeinteractive.com/vertical-split-showcase/ Do you think it’s possible? Thanks M

Oh great! If you do need anything though let me know ;)

- AJ

I’ll send you the final product ;)

Looking forward to seeing it!
