Hi AJ,
I have a questions regarding this guide – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/how-to-add-a-stretched-image-inside-a-wpbakery-column/
Firstly, the column with the image background doesn’t align with the right of the header items. I can set the inner column gap for that row to 0px, but then the text is flush to the image. I noticed I can add a 1px margin to the row and increase the inner column gap but then the text doesn’t align with the logo on any device.
I’m not sure why this is so difficult to recreate the look and alignment of the feature box using wpbakery rows and columns. Are these limitations of wpbakery? Is there a way to have text left & image right (with spacing) and keep it aligned on all screen sizes?
And can I ask why wpbakery breakpoints are different to those used by the theme (css framework)? E.g. ‘full width columns on tablet’ will stack at 992px but that’s not a breakpoint the feature box element uses.
Thanks, Paul.
For spacing between text and image columns I can add padding under design options for that column, but using padding classes from the css framework would be more appropriate if I could get them to apply. On the column say wpex-pr-50 as an extra class name doesn’t apply padding. Using the design options field, padding is applied.
Hi,
1. Because of how WPBakery is coded it can be a bit tricky to work with column backgrounds. This is because WPBakery uses padding for spacing between columns so backgrounds. So you need to use the Outer Column gap in the row to create more spacing.
BUT – I’m releasing an update this week with a really cool new function that will allow you to stretch the Image, Video and Image Banner elements to fill up the column. This will make things WAY easier. I couldn’t do this before because I had to wait for the modern :has() CSS selector to become fully adopted by all browsers and it finally is – https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/:has
Here is a video showing the new setting in action: https://a.cl.ly/P8uKYgvN
And what makes this new option extra cool, is the image will fill up remaining column space as well. This means you can add elements before or after the image and it will still stretch to fill.
Once I update the theme I will be sure to update the guide as well.
Also, depending what you are doing (it sounds like perhaps you are creating a custom header) you can also just use the theme’s Flex container to place text and images next to each other – https://a.cl.ly/Wnu5N1R9
But really, I’m a bit confused with your question because you are following the guide to stretch the image – but then you say ” Is there a way to have text left & image right (with spacing) and keep it aligned on all screen sizes” – keeping an image “aligned” is very different then stretching an image to be the same height as the text next to it. Like if you just want to center align your image you just need to use the setting for the row named “Content Position” and select Middle.
2. Not sure where you are getting the “full width columns on table will stack at 992px” – the description reads very differently: https://a.cl.ly/p9u4KdD2
The theme’s utility breakpoints to match WPBakery’s except for one of them. By default WPBakery columns stack at 768px which is the “md” breakpoint – https://totalwptheme.com/css-framework/responsive-breakpoints/ – the theme’s utility classes just have an extra 620px breakpoint.
When it comes to breakpoints the ONLY thing that really matters is the stacking of columns. I know some people are still stuck doing things like manually setting paddings, margins, font sizes…etc at different breakpoints. All of which is no longer needed because of modern responsive units and CSS functions (clamp(), min(), max(), vh, hw, vmin, vmax). I just wanted to throw this out there…
And when it comes to WPBakery, if you don’t want columns to stack on mobile all you need to do is edit each column to set it’s width for mobile. Here is a video example from one of the header patterns: https://a.cl.ly/KouRWzp5 – so if you set the width at the smallest breakpoint it will not stack.
3. If you add wpex-pr-50 to the column it won’t work because WPBakery has default padding added to columns (15px) because it’s used for spacing. The theme’s utility classes are registered early so WPBakery will override them. This is correct behaviour.
You could instead add the class to the image so that the space is next to the image, no need to target the column if the column only has an image.
What I personally do to add a bit more space is limit the image width and then align it with a utility. Example: https://a.cl.ly/NQunZO2y – this is a basic example. You can make it more responsive by using clamp() or max() in for the image width.

i have a problem with header – following update to 6.0.2 , the phone and email icons are NOW large and black in header – i use this code
[font_awesome icon=”phone”] 07770 836 457
[font_awesome icon=”envelope”] sales@fenori.co.uk
Fenori CI (UK) Ltd
i read somewhere about an issue with 6.0.1 and thought 6.0.2 fixed it – ALSO i dont have any social media icons in header
I updated to the NEW links in customise as follows
[topbar_item icon=”phone” text=”07770 836 457” link=”tel:07770 836 457”/]
[topbar_item icon=”envelope” text=”sales@fenori.co.uk” link=”mailto:sales@fenori.co.uk”/]
Fenori CI (UK) Ltd
that seems to have worked BUT i still dont have the social media links on the right hand side of the Header any longer
www.fenori.co.uk
i seemed to sort out the icons – now using some of the options in customise – TOP BAR > CONTENT used items=”icon,count,total”][/topbar_item]
[topbar_item icon=”phone” text=”07770 836 457” link=”tel:07770 836 457”/]
[topbar_item icon=”envelope” text=”sales@fenori.co.uk” link=”mailto:sales@fenori.co.uk”/]
[topbar_item icon=”home” text=”Fenori.co.uk” link=”https://fenori.co.uk/”]
THE social Icons are displayed on the appearance page preview – BUT not on the main website itself
ok, so the links exist – just they match the colour of the header – as i get th hand and if i click – i goto the social media sites – BUT cant see – tried changing colour still no go ????
maybe an issue with icons in the header , as the phone , email and all social icons are NOT showing up n the header – so a generic setting for icons perhaps in the header , I dont use icons anywhere else on site as far as i can remember
no icons showing in the header at ALL – no phone, email or social icons – so i guess an issue with the icons in the TOP BAR
so searching here’s seems icons on CSS and i guess the theme social links no longer work , as the 6.0 update removed the feature to have icons in CSS – so not sure what to do now – I see a plugin but i only load from add plugins – so not sure how to get the zip file loaded – NOT that i want to use the old style – Happy to use the new method – just need a tutorial on how to add exactly , the social media icons – i expected something in the THEME – also not sure why the customise appearance – AlL the icons appear correctly on the preview screen Any HELP – please
No idea why – but today it works , all i did was update an INACTIVE plugin contact 7 form. Nothing else update – so NO idea why it took a few days – maybe unless the theme i downloading and updating something in the background on a PC BUT the phone still is not showing the icons iPhone – with Chrome , but works with safari on the iPhone
Hi,
This is AJ the theme author.
It sounds like you’ve recently updated your site but the browser was using the old cached CSS and not the latest version of the theme’s CSS.
I had a look at your site and the problem is that the child theme is incorrectly set up. The child theme is loading the parent CSS file using the WordPress version number like this: https://a.cl.ly/6quABRP6
It should be loaded with the theme’s version number, otherwise it creates an issue with cache-busting.
This happens when the child theme doesn’t define a version or the parent CSS file.
You will want to update your child theme so the code that loads the parent CSS file looks like this:
wp_enqueue_style(
'parent-style',
get_template_directory_uri() . '/style.css',
array(),
wp_get_theme( 'Total' )->get( 'Version' )
);
Notice the last parameter pulls the version number from the theme.
If you don’t make these changes you will likely have issues anytime you update the Total theme and there were CSS changes made to the theme.
- AJ
Thanks – Where do i put that code ? Is it the Style CSS file ??

thanks again – have a great xmas holiday – I wont update the code till the new year now – just need to know where to place the code – I thought BB [] worked here – sorry about the above not sure how to insert code into the forum
Hi,
You don’t add this code anywhere. What you need to do is update your child theme to be coded correctly. So somewhere in your child theme’s functions.php file there is code that uses wp_enqueue_style to load the Total style.css. You need to modify that code to correctly add the theme’s version number using:
wp_get_theme( 'Total' )->get( 'Version' )
The code you pasted is from your child theme style.css file. You need to modify the functions.php file.
You can compare your child theme functions.php file with the provided child theme to see how it’s different – https://github.com/wpexplorer/total-child-theme/blob/master/functions.php
Or you can share your functions.php code (as long as there is no private data) with me and I can give you the modified version. If you do this please share the code via a 3rd party such as https://pastebin.com/ – so it’s properly formatted. Sharing code here in the ThemeForest comments isn’t ideal.
- AJ
Hope you had a good xmas – thanks for replying so quickly over the holiday
SORRY Not worked out how to PASTE here from that forum – it seems to have auto generated a code when the child theme was created. Nothing init that is private – Just various bits of code from yourself in the past and stuff i picked up from forums
I have just pasted here – While and try and workout how to doit on that link or other

Hi,
Oh ok, it looks like you may have used some sort of child theme generator plugin to create the child theme which doesn’t generate it correctly and also adds unnecessary code to load an RTL stylesheet.
So what you want to change is line 19 which looks like this:
wp_enqueue_style( 'chld_thm_cfg_parent', trailingslashit( get_template_directory_uri() ) . 'style.css', array( ) );
You would delete that completely and replace with this code:
wp_enqueue_style(
'parent-style',
get_template_directory_uri() . '/style.css',
array(),
wp_get_theme( 'Total' )->get( 'Version' )
);
You should also be able to delete lines 8-15 because this code is used to load an RTL stylesheet which you don’t use on your site:
if ( !function_exists( 'chld_thm_cfg_locale_css' ) ):
function chld_thm_cfg_locale_css( $uri ){
if ( empty( $uri ) && is_rtl() && file_exists( get_template_directory() . '/rtl.css' ) )
$uri = get_template_directory_uri() . '/rtl.css';
return $uri;
}
endif;
add_filter( 'locale_stylesheet_uri', 'chld_thm_cfg_locale_css' );
Keep in mind that if you make any errors in your child theme functions.php file it could cause your site to crash and you won’t be able to log back in via WP. So it’s highly recommended to make the changes via FTP so if you refresh the site and it’s down you can revise and fix your code. It’s never advised to edit the files via the WP admin (Appearance > Theme File Editor) – in fact this should be disabled for security reasons – https://developer.wordpress.org/advanced-administration/wordpress/wp-config/#disable-plugin-and-theme-update-and-installation
- AJ
Thanks so much – for that , I did not realise that i should not EDIT in the theme BUT using FTP I have FTP access and copy that complete set as a backup every couple of weeks any way I’ll look and see where the functions file is located and check
The file will be located at wp-content/themes/Total-child/functions.php
Just let me know if you run into any issues or have any other questions.
Happy New Year!
- AJ
Thanks, found the file and made a backup copy – edited as advised and copied over the new file using FTP All seems to have worked OK now , safari on iPhone is picking up the icons now Thanks so much for all the help here have a great new year
Awesome!
i read about preloading Google Fonts will help speed up website (although i don’t quite understand how it works). Where / how can we do this?
Hi,
You can do this via the Font Manager – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/font-manager/
Whenever you add a font, there is a checkbox to enable preloading.
What preloading does is it tells the browser that the fonts will be used on the site so that it can load it more efficiently.
It’s always a good idea to define the fonts your site will use via the theme’s Font Manager anyway, because it greatly slims down the customizer or any element that has a font family selector, since the theme will only display your registered fonts and default browser fonts, instead of hundreds of Google font options.
- AJ
Sorry I forgot to mention a couple things and I will update the docs as well:
- When using Google fonts if you want them preloaded you would need to set them as Global so the theme knows that font will be used on the whole site and it can be preloaded: https://a.cl.ly/geuDrlX9
- If you upload your own custom font files the preload field is here: https://a.cl.ly/rRudLPYk
Hi AJ,
I am trying to remove some meta from a card. Using the CSS below the author removal works but I have not found the right syntax to remove the comments count. Any suggestions?
/* Remove meta from card */ .wpex-card-blog-list_1 .wpex-card-author { display: none; } .wpex-card-blog-list_1 .wpex-card-comments { display: none; }
Hi,
Here is the updated/optimized CSS:
.wpex-card-blog-list_1 :is(.wpex-card-author, .wpex-card-comment-count) { display: none; }
You could also just create your own custom card – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/custom-card-builder/ – so when you add the Post Meta element in your custom card you can choose exactly what meta fields display, where and how.
- AJ
Thanks very much! I had tried a few variations but did not luck upon the right one. Have read up on custom cards too. Looks very flexible, but since I just needed a few minor changes to this predefined card I decided to go the css route.
BTW, I have another open question from a couple of days ago. Have you seen that yet?
Makes sense, a little CSS is much easier
If you aren’t sure what classes to target what I recommend is using the Chrome inspector tool. This will allow you to click on any element to view the classes added to that element. Sample video: https://a.cl.ly/p9u4ze9q
These are the commands you can use to open the tool:
MacOS – Command + Option + C Windows – Control + Shift + C.
If you are familiar with the inspector tool, it’s very useful!
In Total there will generally be a unique classname at the front of any element that you can target with CSS. Just don’t modify any of the theme’s utility classes – https://totalwptheme.com/css-framework/ – because it can break your site. Utility classes are all prefixed “wpex-” and generally have very specific names based on what they do as opposed to what they are. So it’s fairly obvious to know if a class is a utility or not.
- AJ
ps: I replied to your previous comment. ThemeForest displays comments with the newest at the top and when doing support I generally go top to bottom. Sorry for any confusion!
Hi, I have 14 purchased licenses for Total (unfortunately currently only a handful of active sites) for some strange reason a few sites have lost their registration key and are no longer receiving updates. When I try to login to WP Explorer support to check which key belongs to which site, it now says I have no account there?
Thank you for another awesome update btw!
Hi,
Last year I moved the support site over to this domain – https://my.totalwptheme.com/ – but I didn’t migrate all the users (for good reason). But the site never allowed you to log in with your own credentials before. Previously you always had to log in with your Envato account.
I had a look and I don’t see your username added to the new site. So you will need to go here – https://my.totalwptheme.com/log-in/ – and click on the green button “Continue with Envato” so that it can connect to your Envato account, verify licenses and add you to my site. Once you are added to the site you can then continue logging in with Envato or you can set your own password – https://my.totalwptheme.com/reset-password/ – and use your email/password to log in.
Once logged in you can view and manage all licenses under the License Manager tab – https://my.totalwptheme.com/license-manager/
Licenses shouldn’t ever get automatically removed by the theme. The only code in the theme that removes the license would happen if you visit the license page and the current domain doesn’t match the license on my API, then it gets removed.
Another possibility is that due to legal reasons last year I removed the ability to activate a license in “developer mode” so if those sites were active in dev mode then it’s possible they got deactivated.
Let me know if you have any issues logging into the licensing/support site!
- AJ
Thank you AJ!
I was able to login in fine the way you described, I must have made a mistake earlier sorry. I do believe I was using the developer license on some sites which could explain why they disappeared. So I should use separate licenses for my staging sites now instead?
Thanks!
For staging sites you don’t need to register any license. The theme doesn’t hide any features behind the license. It’s used exclusively for updates and support. So feel free to install the theme on any development/staging site (no need to buy a separate license for all those). But please do purchase a new license (you or your client) for each live site.
That said, some customers do purchase 1 extra license to use just for staging sites that they can add/remove accordingly. This way they can access the automatic updates when needed.
- AJ
Of course every site has it´s own license, I have much more licenses than sites however I just realized my support has expired sorry about that, will purchase new licenses ahead. One site still had the Envato Market but that seems to work fine still. Happy holidays!
Hello I would like the mobile menu to display the submenu, like the mobile menu submenu on this page https://oakywood.shop/de.
Is something like this already integrated in the theme or do you have any tips on how I can implement it?
Hi,
The theme doesn’t have the ability to open the submenus like in this example. It wouldn’t be hard to do this using some custom JavaScript in your child theme. If you do it though, don’t copy the sample site, because their website is not accessible so their mobile menu can’t be properly navigated by people with disabilities. I could perhaps help with some basic JS for this if needed, but I have to know exactly what mobile menu type you are using and your site setup, so you’ll need to provide the URL.
This is actually one of the reasons why in the new Off-Canvas element – https://totalwptheme.com/elements/off-canvas-menu/ (which is intended for use with the Header Builder to create a custom header) – I opted into using the modern details element for the mobile menu dropdowns – https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/details. Because it’s a core browser element, it’s accessible by default. Additionally it doesn’t require added scripts keeping your site as fast as possible.
- AJ
please fix
Old Version working fine. Please t ell me the reason for new version not wroking
What you are showing in the screenshot is usually caused by improper cache busting on your website. Without seeing the actual URL it’s impossible to know what the error is exactly. But most of the time it’s caused by having optimization plugins that incorrectly remove the script versioning at the end of the CSS/JS files or it’s caused by an improper child theme setup so the parent CSS file is not being loaded with the correct version. Thus, when you update your browser loads the old CSS and not the new CSS which causes issues.
If you can share the URL I can inspect the code and give you a more accurate response as to what is causing the issue, but the issue itself is a caching related issue.
- AJ
Hi Aj, how are you? my “all” filtr tab stopped working, following your video using navbars for filtering, now when “all” (#al – All in Menu) shows 0 results, and the url ends with ?filter=al Example: https://forestgreen-louse-296003.hostingersite.com/showcase/
hi, ok, found out the custom link should be only ”#” instead of ”#al”
hmm, is there no way to set a “none” hover animation for feature boxes?
Hi,
Sorry, I’m not sure what you mean. By default the Feature Box doesn’t have any animation: https://totalwptheme.com/elements/feature-boxes/ – can you share the URL so I can see what you are referring to? Thanks!
- AJ
you are right!. I am redesigning an old web, and there was a :hover global class causing that! Sorry
No worries
Hi AJ. I am trying to use a custom dynamic template for Post Series. There is an input field for this in Customizing ▸ General Theme Options ▸Post Series.
The field is not a drop-down. What should I input here? I have tried to type in the dynamic template name and the template number as seen in the dashboard. Neither seems to work.
HI again AJ. I have not heard back from you yet on this, so I did some more digging. I noticed the Dynamic Template input field looks different in a screenshot you have used in your documentation, compared to what it looks like in my UI. Any ideas what is causing this? See image at link below.
https://1drv.ms/i/s!AjFG0Wwo4gi7iv19ELyGjoDPQ7OnaQ?e=hd2xbYHi,
Thank you for your patience. I had to go AFK the last couple days dealing with a family matter.
This is actually a bug!
I am patching it right now for the next update. For the meantime what you can do is enter the template ID into the field which you can find in the admin page: https://a.cl.ly/JruQwy2k
Sorry for the troubles and thank you for reporting it!
- AJ
ps: If you want to fix the bug it’s actually really simple. You would edit the file at plugins/total-theme-core/inc/post-series.php and change line 148 from:
'type' => 'wpex-dropdown-templates',
to:
'type' => 'totaltheme_template_select', 'template_type' => 'archive',
See here: https://a.cl.ly/4guL74kv
You can also just enter the ID as I mentioned before. And I am planning to release the next theme patch, most likely over the weekend.
- AJ
Thanks AJ. I made the change in the .php file and the proper dropdown appeared. I am not using a child theme (yet) but I guess my change will be overwritten by your same change next time I update. I was unable to get the result I wanted with the template for the post series, but have parked that for now. I wanted to incorporate an image in the post series “box” but have been able to achieve something similar by placing an image above and using a negative CSS margin.
Correct, your change will be overwritten which is why I mentioned that you could patch it yourself.
I’m not sure what you want to do exactly, but Total does have the ability to assign images to taxonomies by default. So you can give your post series a photo via the image field: https://a.cl.ly/GGubAvee – this image can then be shown on the archives via the Image element added to the Post Series dynamic template.
If you are using the theme’s page header on the site it will display as a background behind the page title. Example: https://totalwpthemedemo.com/blogdotnom/category/recipes/
By default any taxonomy term with an image will swap the page header title to the background Image style unless disabled via the Theme Panel’s Taxonomy Thumbnail Page Header setting.
Now, if you are trying to display this image on the post itself it is possible to use some custom code to insert the post series photo before the output of the Post Series element. Personally I think it would just bloat things up.
Also if you create a dynamic template for your posts. You can display your post series easily using the Post Cards element like such: https://a.cl.ly/llue4vbq – you aren’t forced to use the default post series element which just shows a list. You can instead display cards which can be shown in various formats (grid, carousel, etc) and with any design you want.
- AJ
Hi AJ. Thanks for this additional advice. I had moved on to other parts of the site but have now returned to this. I have tried some different of achieving the result I was after. Ref this screenshot: https://1drv.ms/i/s!AjFG0Wwo4gi7iv59CBYi7vLvFYxeng?e=at1t1h
The live page is here: https://combat.academy/metharc2025a/article/hydrogen-from-natural-gas/
Referring to the numbered annotation in the shared image…
(1) This was my first attempt. I quite like that offset image style. One problem is that the image gets displayed even for posts that are standalone and not part of a series (such as the one at (4)) as I am choosing the primary Term (Category) image. This could be avoided if I could choose the post series image as the image source but I do not see that available in the dropdown. Can I use a custom field name?
(2) Another variation I tried today using an inner row, but it has the same issue for single posts not part of a series.
(3) Tried you suggestion of using post cards (list 1) but the current post is not listed and the numbering is “dynamic” so I am not sure that this will work “out of the box”.
Also, previously you helped me with the fix to reveal dynamic template names in the post series customizer dropdown, but I wonder if there is another bug as even though I change the dynamic template for the post series nothing actually changes when viewing the page.
Hi,
1. Having the ability to select the post series image would be very useful. I am going to add that setting in the next update.You can’t just use a custom field because the custom field option will search for a custom field of the post itself, it needs to pull the meta value from the post series.
If you want to edit the files on your site to add the option to select the Post Series Image it’s very easy!
First edit the file located at plugins/total-theme-core/inc/vcex/shortcodes/image.php and scroll to the bottom where you will find the get_source_choices() function where you will add the new Post Series Image setting like this:
esc_html__( 'Post Series Thumbnail', 'total-theme-core' ) => 'post_series_thumbnail',
Screenshot of the edit: https://a.cl.ly/mXuNAKYB
Now you will want to edit the file at plugins/total-theme-core/inc/vcex/helpers/get-image-from-source.php and add a new method to the class:
/**
* Get post series thumbnail image.
*/
protected function get_post_series_thumbnail_image() {
if ( \taxonomy_exists( 'post_series' ) && \function_exists( '\wpex_get_term_thumbnail_id' ) ) {
if ( \is_tax( 'post_series' ) && ! \vcex_is_card() && ! \in_the_loop() ) {
$this->image = \wpex_get_term_thumbnail_id( get_queried_object_id() );
} else {
$post_series = get_the_terms( get_post(), 'post_series' );
if ( ! is_wp_error( $post_series ) && ! empty( $post_series[0]->term_id ) ) {
$this->image = \wpex_get_term_thumbnail_id( $post_series[0]->term_id );
}
}
}

2. You could define a custom template just for posts that are a part of a series. Example snippet: https://totalwptheme.com/docs/snippets/post-series-singular-dynamic-template/
3. When using the Post Cards you would use the “Related by Taxonomy” query Type – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/related-items-dynamic-template/ – so you don’t select the “current post”, the theme will pull items from the current post’s related taxonomy automatically for you. Simply select “Post Series” as your related taxonomy.
4. The option in the Customizer is for the post series archive (the page where you can view all the posts assigned to the specific post series), not the singular post. Are you checking the archive to make sure it’s changing? I just tested and the option is working as expected.
I could add the option to define a singular template for the Post Series posts. I do think it would be useful so you don’t have to use code like the snippet provided above.
- AJ
Thanks AJ! I will try the code changes you suggested at (1) and (2). As I have become more familiar with the theme I have realized that there are other ways to achieve what I wanted to do but agree that since we have the ability to associate an image with a post series, it will be useful to be able to select this image directly from the dropdown.
For (3) the “problem” I have with using cards in this case is that it returns a list of the “other” posts in the series only, not including the one currently being viewed. I was after an option similar to how the post series element works, where (say) if I have 3 posts in the series and am on a page viewing the 1st post, all 3 post titles are listed, with the 1st one (currently viewing) being greyed out and the 2 others being clickable links. In any case I will continue using the post series element itself which handles this the way I want.
For (4) I may have misunderstood things. When I click to edit a post series element I see this message: “Go to Appearance > Customize > General Theme Options > Post Series to customize this global element”. So I though I could go to the customizer and change this post series element completely. But it appears that I can only change things like background color, border color etc and not the complete design of the element. That is OK. I have the tools I need to make this work now.
Thanks again.
Quick update: I tried the code changes to reveal and use the series thumbnail – works great!
I also tried the snippet you shared under point (2). Could not get it to work. I want to use this for a custom post type called “article” so I made changes to your code after my initial try (see below), but it did still not work.
I suspect this is because under post types I have defined a custom dynamic template to use with these articles and that this overrides the code snippet. Any suggestions?
``` /** * Define a custom template to use with articles that are part of an article series. */ add_filter( ‘wpex_singular_template_id’, function( $template_id ) { if ( ! is_singular( ‘article’ ) ) { return $template_id; // only apply to the standard post post type. } if ( taxonomy_exists( ‘article_series’ ) ) { $article_series = get_the_terms( get_article(), ‘article_series’ ); if ( ! is_wp_error( $article_series ) && $article_series ) { $template_id = ‘1032’; // !!! EDIT THIS !!! } } return $template_id; } ); ```
Sorry for the formatting, I though I could use markdown here…
Awesome!
The problem you are having is that get_article() is not a function in WordPress. In fact this code would probably throw an error on your site. You need to keep the function that says get_post().
In WordPress technically all custom post types and even pages are “posts” so when you see a function that says post in the name it just means it’s returning data for that post. In this example get_post() specifically returns all the data associated with the current post – https://developer.wordpress.org/reference/functions/get_post/
Also the Post Series taxonomy is always called post_series so you can’t change that either.
The only part of the code you want to change is the is_singular( ‘post’ ) check at the top. Leave everything else the same.
Make sense?
- AJ
ps: To share code here in the comments you need to wrap it inside pre elements.
Got it! Change to snippet made. Now working.
THANKS
Awesome
I bought the product and in the relevant section I type the payment code to verify the license, but it is not verified in any way. Only the loading transaction icon returns. I bought the product here from Themeforest, I’ve never encountered anything like this before. Can you help me urgently to solve the problem.
Solved thank you.
Great! Thanks for the heads up!
Hi,
I am using the Puppy demo. Is it possible to make the right sidebar scroll as I navigate down a post, and also have a specific block within the sidebar scroll along with the post content?
Hi,
Yes, it’s very easy. You just need to edit the sidebar template and use the theme’s wpex-sticky utility classname – https://totalwptheme.com/css-framework/position/
I made a video to show you: https://a.cl.ly/wbuOrnkK
- AJ
Hi AJ
I use the “Reach” demo. My question concerns frames. Let’s say I decided to add a frame to the page I need (for example, “Services”). How do I do that?
1. If I want to add a simple frame, like<iframe src="https://www.example.com" width="600" height="400"></iframe>
2. If I want to add a frame through divs with my own styles, like this
<div class="iframe-style "> <div class="iframe-bg-image" style="height: 500px; background-image:url(https://site .com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/image .jpg);"> </div> <div class="iframe-content"> <button href="https://site .com " class="iframe-button" data-fancybox="" data-type="iframe" data-preload="true" data-caption="Test"> Button name </button> </div> </div>
Hi,
When displaying iFrames on your site you would generally have all the styling done on the page that you are embedding since you can’t target inner iFrame elements with CSS.
Your example would be an iFrame doesn’t make much sense to be because there isn’t an iFrame and it implies that you want it opened with lightbox.
If you want to open an iFrame in Lightbox/Modal you have 2 options:
- https://totalwptheme.com/docs/modal-dialogs-html/ (ideal, modern method that uses native browser modals)
- https://totalwptheme.com/docs/inline-lightbox/ (easier but uses jQuery and extra lightbox scripts)
In terms of just adding an iFrame though to your page you would use the WPBakery HTML element or the Gutenberg HTML element (depends on the context and if you are using WPBakery or not).
If you can provide more details. Maybe an example of what you want exactly and the URL you want to embed into an iFrame I can be more helpful.
- AJ
ps: I forgot to mention, the theme has utility classes you can use to apply styling to elements without adding extra CSS to your site – https://totalwptheme.com/css-framework/
I have reviewed the information you have written above. I would like to clarify some details.
If you can provide more details. Maybe an example of what you want exactly and the URL you want to embed into an iFrame…
I’d like to add the ability to launch a demo game slot to the page. For example:
- Like this https://tinyurl.com/2wwj7uh3 (if you click on the “Play demo” button, a window opens. And in the upper right corner there is a “Close” button).
- Or like this https://tinyurl.com/ytvcy2nw (if you click on the “Play demo” button, the frame starts right inside the page)
...ideal, modern method that uses native browser modals
I tried to do this by adding a modal dialog using HTML. The code looks like this:
<dialog id="popup-1" class="wpex-modal"> <div class="wpex-modal__inner"> <iframe width="667" height="375" src="https://player.eu.regulated.pushgaming.com/mesh/b2c/igp/dm-verajohn/launch?rgsCode=hive&rgsGameId=bigbamboo-01&mode=DEMO&lang=sv&country=EN&ccyCode=EUR&jurisdiction=MT"></iframe> </div> </dialog> <button aria-controls="popup-1" class="wpex-open-modal theme-button">Popup</button>
In this case, when you click the “Popup” button, a modal window opens. But inside it, just a black screen is displayed. Like this https://ibb.co/WKBSTNm.
Hi,
Your code looks correct, but when I try it out I see errors from the player itself: https://a.cl.ly/OAudRPDm – the iFrame is working as expected the issue is on the other end.
One thing I want to mention though, if you want to display many of these I would highly recommend a custom post type – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/adding-custom-post-types/ – with a custom field to define your iFrame – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/snippets/add-custom-metaboxes-to-total/ – then you can create a custom card to display them all – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/custom-card-builder/
And you can make your code dynamic like such:
<dialog id="popup-{{post_id}}" class="wpex-modal">
<div class="wpex-modal__inner">
<iframe width="667" height="375" src="{{cf_KEY}}"></iframe>
</div>
</dialog>
<button aria-controls="popup-{{post_id}}" class="wpex-open-modal theme-button">Popup</button>
Notice the use of “{{post_id}}” which is a dynamic variable – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/dynamic-variables/ – this allows each popup to have a unique ID so they don’t conflict.
And the iframe URL is added using the custom field variable, so you would need to modify it to use your custom field ID (aka, change KEY for your meta key ID).
Of course this code wouldn’t check if a field exists, so the assumption is all items have a popup. If you need if/else checks then the code would need to be added in a custom shortcode via a child theme or code snippet plugin.
- AJ
Hi,
Thanks for the information.
...if you want to display many of these I would highly recommend a custom post type
No, I plan to use such an iframe only on one page of the site. In this regard, at the moment I do not see the need to use a custom post type.
Your code looks correct, but when I try it out I see errors from the player itself.
I decided to experiment with the code and this is what I got.
If I use this link
src="https://player.eu.regulated.pushgaming.com/mesh/b2c/igp/dm-verajohn/launch?rgsCode=hive&rgsGameId=bigbamboo-01&mode=DEMO&lang=sv&country=EN&ccyCode=EUR&jurisdiction=MT"
in an iframe by adding a modal dialog using HTML, it will not work.
But if I simply add an iframe to the page with this same link (without adding a modal dialog using HTML), it will work. Moreover, if you look in the DevTool console, there will be the same errors that were indicated here https://a.cl.ly/OAudRPDm/
This is the code that works:
<iframe width="667" height="375" src="https://player.eu.regulated.pushgaming.com/mesh/b2c/igp/dm-verajohn/launch?rgsCode=hive&rgsGameId=bigbamboo-01&mode=DEMO&lang=sv&country=EN&ccyCode=EUR&jurisdiction=MT"></iframe>
This was for example, because this method of inserting iframe does not suit me.
Based on the above, I have a question. Could it be that the error loading the iframe inside the modal window occurs because of the method of adding a modal dialog using HTML?
I would also like to add the following. If I use a modal dialog using HTML and add another link in the src attribute with the same demo slot, it will work. Here is the code:
<dialog id="popup-1" class="wpex-modal"> <div class="wpex-modal__inner"> <iframe width="667" height="375" src="https://www.pushgaming.com/games/play/big-bamboo.html"></iframe> </div> </dialog> <button aria-controls="popup-1" class="wpex-open-modal theme-button">Popup</button>
I have encountered a problem. I embedded the code below on the page I need via Gutenberg Editor (because I didn’t know how to do it via wpbakery page builder):
<dialog id="popup-1" class="wpex-modal"> <div class="wpex-modal__inner"> <iframe src="https://www.pushgaming.com/games/play/big-bamboo.html" style="position:fixed; top:0; left:0; bottom:0; right:0; width:90%; height:90%; border:none; margin:auto; padding:0; overflow:hidden; z-index:999999;"></iframe> </div> </dialog> <button aria-controls="popup-1" class="wpex-open-modal theme-button">Demo</button>
Now I can’t go back to editing this page via wpbakery page builder. As soon as I try to do this, an iframe starts right in the editor.
Can you tell me how to correctly embed such code on the page so that there are no errors in the future?
Hi,
By default the dialog element is hidden, my guess is that the page you are trying to load in the iFrame has javascript that runs when the page loads but because the initial iFrame is hidden it causes an issue…But I see that you’ve modified the code so that the iframe is inside another page (your second screenshot) and this will work correctly!
The problem with the second code though is the inline CSS which set’s the iFrame to a fixed position so it’s going to display over the editor.
You’ll probably need to remove the code from Gutenberg first. If you can’t via the editor you may need to swap to code mode first: https://a.cl.ly/z8u9wG7W – then in WPBakery you can add this via the HTML editor.
What I would personally recommend though is to instead place your code in your child theme functions.php file as a custom shortcode – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/child-theme/
Example code:
add_shortcode( 'big_bamboo_popup', function() {
ob_start();
?>
<dialog id="big-bamboo-game" class="wpex-modal">
<div class="wpex-modal__inner">
<iframe src="https://www.pushgaming.com/games/play/big-bamboo.html" height="600" width="600"></iframe>
</div>
</dialog>
<button aria-controls="big-bamboo-game" class="wpex-open-modal theme-button">Play Bamboo Game</button>
<?php
return ob_get_clean();
} );
Then you can use your shortcode ( [big_bamboo_popup] )anywhere you need it and you can always edit it globally via the child theme. This way there aren’t any concerns with the iFrame trying to render while in the editor as it will just show up as the shortcode in plain text.
Here is a video showing the code above working: https://a.cl.ly/p9u4zeKZ
Also you can change the width and height of the iFrame to fit your needs. I set it to 600×600 for the example.
- AJ
Hi AJ
Great solution, thank you!
Even though I will be using a shortcode, I would still like to clarify a couple of things. Perhaps I will need it in the future.
1. How to use my own HTML code in WPBakery?
I still haven’t figured out how to do it correctly. For example, I decided to insert something like this:
<div> <p><a href="lorem.html"><img src="images/sample.png" width="189" height="255" alt="lorem" /></a>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...</p> </div>
This is just an example. I understand that something similar can be done through the WPBakery editor itself.
2. Unnecessary HTML tags
Let’s say I decided to add the code from your example to the page:
<dialog id="popup-1" class="wpex-modal"> <div class="wpex-modal__inner">This is my Popup</div> </dialog> <button aria-controls="popup-1" class="wpex-open-modal theme-button">Popup</button>
In WPBakery I add a new row. Then I go to Classic mode, find this empty row and paste the code above there. Like this https://ibb.co/XLRvtPW
When I click Update in WPBakery, it takes me to the Gutenberg editor. There I see this https://ibb.co/3zdj7cw
I fix it as it was before. Save
Everything works on the page, but in the source code I see unnecessary HTML tags. This is what it looks like in the page’s source code https://ibb.co/41K21pF
Extra tags have been added to the code: p and br.
Why does this happen? What am I doing wrong?
HI,
1. To insert HTML in WPBakery you just need to use the Raw HTML element. Video: https://a.cl.ly/xQuk0pNo – WPBakery saves the code as Base64 code so it doesn’t cause issues with the editor, then it gets parsed on the frontend when displayed.
2. You can’t just insert HTML inside WPBakery like this because the WPBakery rows need to contain shortcodes, if you insert plain HTML it breaks the WPBakery editor. When using WPBakery you should never edit things in classic mode because things can break. If you just use the RAW HTML element as mentioned above it will work correctly.
And when you edit in the WordPress Classic editor, WordPress will automatically insert extra tags like the line breaks you see. This is because the default WordPress editor has code that automatically adds spaces after new lines.
3. Tip: When you first open the WPBakery window to insert elements you can actually imediatly start typing to locate an element so if you type “html” you will find the element easier. Like I did in my video.
Thank you AJ, your support is priceless
Hi AJ,
I have WP 6.7.1 installed with Total theme version 5.19 installed.
The website works great – https://rpwtraders.com
I try to update the theme via different ways: > Appearance > Themes > Update > Updates > Update Themes > upload the latest zip file
I have tried to update the theme with the last few versions including version 6.0.2 today.
Everytime I update I get the error = There has been a critical error on this website.
Do you know what I can do to overcome the error.
Thanks Paul
Hi Paul,
This is a generic server error. Unfortunately, no one else is having critical errors when uploading so I have no idea what could be going on.
Are you able to log into the site to access the backend? If so, you may want to try disabling plugins to see if it fixes things. The error could potentially be related to a child theme code as well.
If you want shoot me an email directly to wpexplorer [at] gmail dot com (so you don’t have to renew support – although if you want to, it really does help me out). And provide me with your WP and FTP logins via this – https://onetimesecret.com/ – and I can log into your site and see what’s going on to get it fixed up right away without you having to revert to any backups.
- AJ
Hi AJ, thanks for the reply. I renewed support and sent through a message. Thanks again Paul
Hello. Is it possible in wpbakkery to set a different font size in the title and text each separate block for mobile devices? For example, Elementor is easy to change. But in wpbakkery I can’t find where to do this.
Hi,
If you are using the theme’s elements you just click the toggle next to the font size field to enter font sizes at specific breakpoints. Here is a video: https://a.cl.ly/8LuWyvjY – any size you add will be use for that breakpoint and lower, so if you set a size at the middle breakpoint it will be used for that and all the smaller ones (no need to add a number to each field).
BUT…setting a custom font size for different breakpoints is very old school and not generally recommended these days. The modern way to add responsive font sizes is via the CSS clamp() method. I would only recommend using the breakpoints for extremely large font sizes where you may need a bit more control.
In Total 6.0 I introduced fluid font sizes by default for the theme’s built-in preset font sizes – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/preset-font-sizes/ – if you are using an older version of the theme you can either disable the “Classic Styles” option in the Theme Panel to “migrate” your site to the new fluid font sizes, site layout, default font size…etc. See the changelog for more info: https://totalwptheme.com/docs/changelog/6-0/
Or you can keep Classic Styles enabled and define fluid font sizes in the Customizer for your preset font sizes. This site is great for generating them: https://www.fluid-type-scale.com/
And it’s highly recommend you just click on the preset font sizes and use those in the elements that way your font sizes aren’t manually added everywhere and you can easily control them in the customizer globally:
- AJ
ps: If you prefer Elementor, Total is fully compatible: https://totalwptheme.com/elementor-integration/ and https://totalwptheme.com/docs/elementor-site-width-setup/
Hi AJ, I updated the total theme and it seems that the toggle menu it doesn’t appear when you click it in the mobile view. Is there any issue about that with the new version? this is our URL: https://bilbaobizkaiapeoplesmuseum.com/
can you help with this issue?
Hi,
The theme’s javascript for the mobile menu was optimized to use modern defer attributes like such: https://a.cl.ly/KouRyb76
Unfortunately some sort of “optimization” plugin is incorrectly combining the optimized scripts and adding them without proper deferring causing JS errors on the site: https://a.cl.ly/RBub7xyP – I can’t tell what plugin is doing that since there is no clear commenting in the source code, but customer usually only have a single optimization plugin enabled or it’s done via the hosting so it should be clear to figure out what is causing the issue.
Now, combining scripts is out-dated tactics. It can actually slow down your website when using modern HTTP/2+ protocols. So it’s generally no longer recommended to combine scripts. So personally I would recommend you disable any script combining on the site, which should fix the issue but also allow your site to render faster.
Additionally, I have seen some incorrectly coded optimization plugins also remove the defer attribute when “minify” is enabled. The theme’s scripts are already minified anyway so there is no point to run extra server resources minifying what’s already minified. So if your optimization plugin is also minifying theme scripts it’s best to exclude the theme from that.
In fact looking at your site it appears the theme’s CSS files are being modified (no apparent issues) – but again, the theme’s CSS is already optimized so no point in having another plugin modify them.
- AJ
Hi AJ, thanks for your help. There was a pluging to optimize pages, I’ve deactivated and our web is ok again.
many thanks Sonia
Great, thanks for letting me know Sonia.
Any chance you can tell me the name of the plugin? This way I can test it and recommend a fix to the plugin developers. Thank you!
Of course, this was the plugin: Page Optimize from WordPress.com
Optimiza el JS y el CSS para una carga y proceso más rápido de la página en el navegador.
Thanks again, AJ
Thanks!
I had a look at the plugin which I believe is this one; https://wordpress.org/plugins/page-optimize/
If you are using this plugin. I know you de-activated it but I would recommend deleting it entirely and never using it. It has a lot of issues:
- It combines your scripts which can actually slow down your site. Combining scripts is an outdated optimization not recommended with newer protocols.
- It moves where styles are loaded which breaks CSS priority.
- It incorrectly removes all defer attributes from scrips.
The plugin is so broken It doesn’t even make sense for me to suggest any changes for them. This plugin will probably only work with a very simple site that is loading a single CSS file and un-optimized JS. The Total theme has built-in optimizations already anyway, so it’s completely unnecessary.
Hi AJ, I don’t realy use this plugin, It was instaled by default, so I’ve deleted as you told me. thanks again Sonia
Hi AJ, I hope you are well. Is there any way to make something like this grid under “Perfect Beauty Things” of this page: https://chandelier.qodeinteractive.com/light/ ? One of my clients asked for this but I cannot find any way to reproduce it with Total.
Thanks George
Hi George,
There isn’t anything built-in to the theme for this sort of things. You would need to use a 3rd party plugin or custom CSS/JS.
It wouldn’t be very hard to come up with the custom code to make this work (should only be a few lines of JS as all you need to do is add/remove classes from the items when hovering on one of them and the class would then be used to hide the content). You can inspect the code used on the same site to see how they did it.
But personally, I would never recommend something like this. I think it would be best to convince the client to do something else. These are the main reasons that layout is a bad idea:
- SEO: It’s very bad to hide text like this.
- Usability: It’s not clear to the end user that you should hover the image.
- Accessibility: Most importantly, this isn’t accessible for people with disabilities.
Hi – I am setting up a new site (on multisite). Imported the Corporate demo but am having trouble displaying the main menu in the header. It looks fine when I am in the customize header screen, the menu is visible and responds to changes, but when I preview the site there is no menu in the header (only the logo). Created a new menu and swapped that in, but the problems remains. Can anyone help please?
Hi,
This is AJ the theme author.
Can you please share the URL?
Since it works fine while in the Customizer, there are 2 things I can think of:
1. You are using an optimization plugin that incorrectly modifies the theme’s mobile breakpoint CSS files. This is a known bug in many plugins. I reported it to Total Cache for example: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-removes-css-media-attribute/
2. You are using a plugin that is loading the whole Bootstrap CSS framework (always a bad idea) – and this can cause issues like the one you mention.
If you share the URL I can confirm exactly what’s going on.
- AJ
Thanks for the quick response AJ!
Site link: https://combat.academy/metharc2025a/
Also worth mentioning, I am running two other Total theme sites on this multisite. They did not experience this problem. Also, if I switch over to the default WP theme, the menu is visible.
AJ – you were spot on. I disabled Minify in TotalCache and the menu appears. I reenabled it again so you can confirm the same. Until they respond with your requested fix, are there any other options than just disabling this setting in TotalCahce?
Well, all the theme’s scripts are already minified by default so there is no point in having another plugin minify and create duplicates of the theme’s scripts.
Ideally you could exclude all the theme’s scripts from Total Cache messing with them (for example using their “Never minify the following CSS files:” option) but because of how the plugin is coded it’s complicated and messy.
Other optimization plugins allow you to exclude folders (like the theme or a plugin) completely from their minify, combine or other optimization processes. Unfortunately Total Cache doesn’t allow this, so you have to manually add each file in the settings to be excluded. Very bad design.
That said, I looked at your site and all the CSS and JS files loaded on your site are just coming from the theme, WPBakery and Slider Revolution. They are all already minified! So there is no need for W3 Total Cache to waste server resources doing something that’s already done. I would recommend just keeping the option disabled.
More importantly I don’t see any sliders on your site so you should be able to disable/delete the Slider Revolution plugin and actually speed up the site a bit. You can then disable the notices from the theme to install it so it doesn’t bother you – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/disable-bundled-plugin/
I really recommend never using sliders actually. This is a really good read – https://yoast.com/opinion-on-sliders/
- AJ
Thanks again AJ. I started with slider revolution disabled, but when I played around with things to figure out the missing menu issue I may have enabled it, since the demo I imported used a slider revolution part. I will make sure to disable it again.
Hi, What is the diff btw Single Image by WPBakery & Total?
When I add a single image in the row, I want to set max height of the image ie to truncate the image because the original image is too high .. can this be done?
Hi,
The Single Image is a core WPBakery element. So it’s coded by the plugin developers. The Image element by Total is an element I made specifically for the theme that has more flexibility.
Generally I would recommend using the theme elements when possible and not WPBakery’s so you have more customization. Also because then you can use the theme’s WPBakery Slim mode feature – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/wpbakery-slim-mode/ – to speed up the site.
You can easily set a max height for your image in the theme’s Image element under the Dimensions tab: https://a.cl.ly/mXuNjpQw
hi AJ, is it not possible to use vimeo videos as row background videos? Also, container units are not supported yet, are they? qw, qi, qb….
I mean cqh, cqw…. they are a really good alternatives for vw, and vh when having boxed content
Hi,
Currently there isn’t a built-in setting to use Vimeo videos for your background, but I wouldn’t recommend it anyway. It’s best to always self-host your video background. That said, if you are using Vimeo Pro it’s possible to display the Vimeo videos inside standard HTML elements (aka self-hosted).
Where are you trying to use those units exactly?
The only fields in the theme that sanitize the input in a way that would prevent those units from working would be font size fields. Any other theme field should strip those out.
- AJ
Hi,
I struggle to change the font size of the price in Woocommerce on the single product page, I can only alter the weight.
Is there a way to do so that I’m missing ?
Thank you
Hi,
This is AJ the theme author.
There isn’t a built-in Customizer setting for this, but you can use a little Custom CSS.
Example CSS:
.woocommerce .product .summary .price { font-size: 16px; }
If you want to use a theme’s preset font size – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/preset-font-sizes/ – the code would look like this:
.woocommerce .product .summary .price { font-size: var(--wpex-text-xl); }
Where “lg” is the font size prefix (xs, sm, md, lg, xl, 2xl, 3xl, 4xl, 5xl, 6xl, 7xl)
You can also create a custom template for your products if you want to have more control over the design – https://totalwptheme.com/docs/woocommerce-single-product-template/ – when you insert the theme’s WooCommerce Part element to display the product price you can modify the typography.
- AJ
Thank you for the quick answer. Got it.
