Missing style sheet error when installing the theme

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a "Broken theme and/or stylesheets missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

How to upgrade Subway theme?


If you are using FileZilla, please read this before you copy files:

You can upgrade our theme by performing following steps:

1. Download latest theme main file from ThemeForest

2. Extract it and locate subway.zip

3. Extract subway.zip and locate subway folder

4. Copy/Replace the content of subway folder to /wp-content/themes/subway folder of your web site.

Using this method, none of existing content or settings will be lost.

What to do if I get this message when I try to upload theme: “Are you sure you want to do that? Please try again.”?

There is max upload file size limit on your server. You can contact your hosting and ask them to increase it to at least 15Mb or you can install the theme via ftp following instructions here:

1. Download theme’s file from ThemeForest

2. If you downloaded All files & documentation, extract it and locate subway.zip

3. Extract subway.zip and locate subway folder

4. Upload the subway folder to /wp-content/themes/ folder of your web site.

How to upgrade Subway from version 1.0.5 or older to version 1.1 or newer?

1. Download latest All files & documentation file from ThemeForest (your Downloads page)

2. Extract it and locate subway.zip

3. Extract subway.zip and locate subway folder

4. Copy/Replace the content of subway folder to /wp-content/themes/subway folder of your web site.

5. Delete following folders on your server: /wp-content/themes/subway/wpbakery and /wp-content/themes/subway/extendvc/vc_templates/

6. Install Visual Composer plugin directly from WP Dashboard, as it will report missing required plugin (in case you are using child theme, you need to have main theme active while you do this, then you can re-activate child theme again). You can also install it manually from /subway/plugins folder.

Please note that Subway is using custom version of Visual Composer plugin and you need to use plugin included with the theme. We just updated it to version 4.1.2 and added our custom work to this version.

Using this method, none of existing content or settings will be lost.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: How to upgrade Subway to version 1.4 and Visual Composer to latest version included with the theme?

Before you start, you need to deactivate & delete Visual Composer plugin from WordPress Dashboard > Plugins.

In order to update the theme to latest version, please perform following steps:

1. Download latest All files & documentation file from ThemeForest (your Downloads page)

2. Extract it and locate subway.zip

3. Extract subway.zip and locate subway folder

4. Copy/Replace the content of subway folder to /wp-content/themes/subway folder of your web site.

Using this method, none of existing content or settings will be lost.

When update is done, please go back to WordPress Dashboard. You will see notice at the top that missing plugin (Visual Composer) is required. Please follow instructions there in order to install and activate the plugin.
