I have installed buddy press and tried bot MediaPress and rtMedia. They both are disconnected from the media that is used in posts. I am wondering if it is better/viable to set up a custom post type that will take the media/gallery function for the users and use the front end form to allowing users to upload. By having a front end form and custom post it will be directly connected with all the other Wordpress functionality. The only issue I see is for users to set privacy options. Is my logic wrong in some way? Since this seems to not have be a usual way to set this up?

I made a new type of post for this gallery / Portfolio function. I also made category taxonomy, but I can’t find how to add the category selection to the front end form. In the admin section I can add the categories have assigned to the posts, but I can’t get the option to show up on front end form.
Also, is there any way to add these custom posts to the budupress profile as a tab? preferable with a visual composer layout design option. I would like to have the option of seeing the users “portfolio posts” on their profile tab with a thumbnail view (not list). The best way would be if I could to edit this view with visual composer. (did that make sense?)

Is there a way to customize different post layouts?
I would like to use a post layout like ‘offer and review score’ but remove the post thumbnails and video from beneath the featured image. The problem with these layouts is that they always include the video along with the images, and the video player in this section does not work if you have SSL encryption enabled.
More generally, I would like to pick and choose features I like from different post layouts, but I don’t want to do anything that will get wiped out whenever the script get’s updated.
