I’ve seen the comment here soon after my previous one, from “chrystalmyers” (saving a VC page doesn’t work without error message).
I regularly have this issue on my Chrome 60 install (haven’t tried on FF yet), and noticed it usually happens after having switched to text mode – especially on active Footer Builder and Toggle Bar pages.
I feel it’s not related to Total, as I have other problems with VC on my Chrome.
I’ve “learned” to live with that because I anticipate it when I (scarcely) update in text mode, and correct it this way :
I clear site data in Chrome inspector app tab, and if it’s not enough :
I add to the page whichever temporary module, save, delete it, add it again, re-save.
(and in any case refresh caches)

That’s very strange. I use Chrome for all development (with over 20 tabs open usually at a time) and never had any issue working locally or on a live site.
Do you run any sort of extensions in Chrome? Specifically an ad-blocker (most likely to cause issues with javascript related functions).
The issue with the user “chrystalmyers” was just a bug in an older version of VC. What you are talking about seems very different…

It’s very kind from you to be concerned about my problems with Chrome, but I don’t want to bother you with that, as it’s not a big problem for me.
For your curiosity though : I was indeed using Adblock, but now disable all Chrome extensions when in WP admin – easily with … “Simple Ext Manager” extension *<:o)
Thanks also for your feedback about Contact Form 7 and video lazy load. For the form, I had heard that its resources are drawned on every page even without form, and I was afraid of the delay appearing on Pingdom “refill” line without clicking Send : http://www.pnet.fr/cf7.png
For info, I’ve kept WP version 4.7.7 installed by my host (who doesn’t provide auto updates), thinking that a newer version wouldn’t increase performance – and I’m afraid of difficulties updating myself.
And I also hesitate to switch to HTTPS (my host proposes free SSL), although I’ve heard it can substantially improve performance.

- Oh I see the refill now. I found this – https://wordpress.org/support/topic/file-refill/ – not sure if it’s helpful at all to you.
- HTTPS will help performance if using http/2 – if you plan on switching you need to decide before the site is live. Otherwise if you wait then there are important SEO considerations because Google treats https and http as 2 different websites.
- I’ll have a look for the email and reply back. I don’t do support via that email because it gets 50-100 emails a day and I don’t like to waste time going through the email on a daily basis because most of it is random people trying to basically get free help for their website or offering services. Always best to open a ticket.

Thanks indeed for your tip about HTTPS and for having looked for a solution about CF7.
What was mentioned in the CF7 support thread didn’t work for me, but I’ll stick to CF7 as apparently the “Refill” thing only adds around 50 ms to each page, as you seem happy with it, and as your module is handy (although an extra class in a future relase would help).
Can I please ask you if Total sets any cookies ?
As I don’t use (for now) user registration nor comments, I’d prefer to disable them to avoid displaying the EU warning to each visitor.
I’ve just found a tip to disable cookies on a domain via htaccess file :Header unset Cookie Header unset Set-Cookie

Hi Michel,
The actual Total theme does not set any cookies on the front-end. In the future if I add some sort of notice bar with a dismiss button then that would use cookies but currently no theme function uses them.

I’m using the testimonials slider – it is working fine along with the Read More button. Question, after clicking on Read More it brings me to the expanded view of the testimonial post. However, the url that shows links to my Home Page and I would like to change it to my Testimonals page where the Testimonials reside. How do I change the link?

Updating my site using the WPBakery Page Builder no longer works. Any time I publish or preview the page all changes revert. I CAN update using the front end builder but I find that interface frustrating. Any idea why this would suddenly stop working? The only change that has happened recently is a Firefox browser update. Working on latest versions of Total and WP and all plugins are up to date. Anyone else having this issue?

There aren’t any known issues with updating/saving pages on the latest version in the backend or front-end builders.
Do you see any errors in your browser console when updating?
Usually these sort of things happen when a poorly coded plugin is installed causing a javascript error on the page so the page builder won’t work.
You mentioned its happening in Firefox, does it happen on all browsers?

Did you update all files? These errors would happen if the functions.php file was updated but there are files missing inside the theme. How did you update? It’s possible the server may have timed out during the update so not all files were uploaded correctly or there are permission errors on the server so the new files added don’t have the correct permissions and can’t be accessed.

I updated from the WordPress updates page. I’ll try again and if that doesn’t work, I’ll download the files and upload manually
I’ve transferred the latest theme files manually but the errors are still there…
I’ve switched back to the old theme version and the errors have disappeared. I’ve kept the latest theme files in a folder called ‘Total 5.5.1’. Let me know if I need to reset something somewhere to make it work.
Very weird, are you running a child theme? If you are make sure your child theme’s functions.php file isn’t trying to load these files.

Hey AJ,
It was something odd with the child theme. For some reason when I looked at ‘Appearance >> Editor’ it was showing that the child theme contained all of the same files as the parent theme – which wasn’t true. So I deleted the child theme and re-added it – working perfectly now.

Did you update to WP 4.9?
I’ll double check my update function to make sure there isn’t any issues with child themes. Can you let me know the name of your child theme so I can test with the same name? Thanks!

I just tested on a stagging site with the same child theme and didn’t have any issues (tested in wp 4.8+ and wp 4.9). I guess something went weird on your server 
I’ll keep an eye out though to see if there is some sort of WP 4.9 bug with this (if you were using this version).

This is happening again on a different site – showing all of the parent theme files, so I changed the child theme folder name. The child theme editor page looks normal now – just showing child theme files – but getting a series of errors at the top of pages throughout the site…?

I’m sorry, but I’m working on 2-3 things to improve loading times, on which I’d be glad to have your opinion. Here’s one :
On webpage tests waterfalls, Contact Form 7 adds substantial time – although I have very basic forms. It doesn’t seem to be due to the VC module, as i’ve found commentaries on the web about its apparent slowliness.
Maybe you would have a recommendation, possibly of other plugins.

Contact Form 7 has always been super fast for me, on which URL is it showing slowness? Can you share the URL?
If you want a recommendation though my absolute favorite form plugin is Gravity Forms but it is premium. It offers so many options, addons and developer tools.

On another subject : I’ve seen your documentation about “Lazy Load for Videos” support, and I wonder wether such a plugin would improve loading of pages with a Portfolio Grid of 8 items, each with video URL in oEmbed field (video accesssed by clicking on an item’s feature image on the grid)

- I don’t see any contact form issues here. And the form uses AJAX so it doesn’t run until you click submit and when you do it only takes 300ms to run – https://cl.ly/nnIK
- Lightbox videos don’t load until you click the image to open the video because the iframe isn’t created until the lightbox is clicked it’s just a link in the code.

If you did everything recommended then the malware is either coming from either another website on your server or a file on the server that isn’t part of the core files such as the .htaccess file (did you check this one?)
I’m sorry to hear that your hosting company isn’t willing to help you Most good hosting companies will assist with this sort of thing. Also you should have a backed up version of the site before it was hacked, do you?
Unfortunately fixing hacked server’s isn’t something included in theme support because it puts my computer at risk and it can take many hours or a full day to fix the issue. Which is why it’s important to have security methods in place on your server in the first place and keep things up to date.

Reading your last comment I see that all the errors are coming from a theme named “sophiescrafts”. I have no idea what theme this is. Did you rename the Total theme to “sophiescrafts”? If so, did you make sure to delete all the files inside this folder and upload the latest version of the files?
Can you please send me some screenshots or a quick video showing that everything is up to date on your server. I just want to make sure before logging into anything that things are up to date. Thanks!

Thank you, but unfortunately none of this is helpful. All it’s telling you is that all the files on your server are basically hacked and contain malware. It doesn’t say anything about how the hacker accessed the site and where the core issue lies. This can only be done by viewing server access logs and running scans on the server after deleting all themes/plugins on the site and re-installing the core WP files.
If you want to log into the support site and send the FTP and WP logins I can re-install everything for you and run Some scans to see if we can locate the root of the issue. I’ll need to switch over to a different computer though to not put mine at risk and this can take some time to complete depending on the severity of the issue. But also I am not an expert at removing malware from a server, it may be best to contact an actual specialist in the field.
This is something completely outside the scope of support, but I am willing to help if you prefer that I help you out, I just can’t provide any sort of guarantees. Out of 27,000+ Total sales I’ve only had 1 customer before that was hacked but it was a very easy fix and it was because they were running outdated versions of WordPress and insecure passwords. So I don’t have a lot of experience in this matter. And I’ve never been hacked before (knock on wood).
Don’t you have a backup of your website before it was hacked that you can just revert to? That would be the fastest and easiest solution. Most servers keep daily backups of your website so maybe they have one.

Photon is an addon of the JetPack plugin which stores your images on the WordPress.com server and reduces their quality to help speed up your site (if you prefer to have nicer quality images I recommend disabling it) – https://jetpack.com/support/photon/
Oh and actually i think the issue with the theme I just noticed your theme is outdated and I did add a favicon fix. Can you try updating the theme?

Assuming the alternate logo we choose is the same height/width, and there is a 2x logo (retina) uploaded to same folder, will it resize/retinize accordingly? Or are there additional specs/code we need to take into account to make sure the swapped logo sizes properly (e.g. shrinks down for sticky header)?

If you are using this particular snippet you must also define the retina logo (I just updated the snippet, please have a look). Because the theme can’t possibly now the name for the retina logo (the logo is a bit different so it can’t just use the @2x extension.)
I jsut noticed though that the normal image filter is named “wpex_header_logo_img_url” but the retina filter is named “wpex_retina_logo_url” – so I will likely alter the filter to read “wpex_header_logo_img_retina_url” in the future, but if I do I will keep the fallback or at least add a deprecated notice

Based on your video. I believe this would only happen if you have javascript disabled or an issue with javascript. I’ve tested on all the same browsers and don’t have any issues.
Have you tried on a different computer? I tested on my iMac and PC.
I’ve also tested on online browser tester (crossbrowsertesting.com) to make sure it’s not just cached for me over here and it’s fine there as well.
You can send FTP logins but if I can’t recreate the issue then there is nothing for me to fix
Have you enabled any sort of CDN on your server? Maybe I’m getting the website served from a different location then you?

Looking at your code I see why you have issues though and you need to clear the CDN. Your site is missing all the version numbers at the end of the scripts which are important because it tells your CDN and the browser if a script (css or js file) has changed so it can load the new one.
I’m guessing you are using a plugin or some code to remove these. Some people do it because sites like Google Insights (page speed) tell you to remove them (although it causes 0 difference in actual site loading time – unless you are changing the version every day, which would never happen in the theme as it only changes with theme updates when the file actually changes).
I highly recommend keeping the script version numbers enabled on the site – because even if you purge your CDN if other customers don’t clear their browser cache then the site could appear broken for them since nothing is telling the browser to load the new scripts.

I don’t think I coded anything to do this so I think it must be as that’s the main optimisation plugin I use (probably not the best idea to use settings found on Google). If you look at the notices the malware isn’t being stored in the Total theme but in the index.php file and in another theme named “sophiescrafts”.
That said, malware will always try and add it’s code into the active theme but the exploit can be in WordPress itself or a plugin. The theme itself should be 100% secure as no one has ever been hacked via the Total theme as it’s a very secure product. 99% of the time hacked sites are due to having an outdated version of WordPress or installing illegal copies of premium theme’s from insecure sources.
Here are my recommended steps (if your hosting company isn’t able to help you):
- First if you are using a PC make sure your computer itself doesn’t have a virus as that’s also a common way to get your site infected.
- Then locate the index.php file mentioned above via FTP and remove anything inside that file.
- Locate the searchform.php file mentioned above and simply delete it completely.
- Log into WordPress, change your admin passwords (and username if you are using “admin” for the username which is very insecure).
- Next update all themes and plugins. If you have plugins or themes that don’t need updating, delete and re-install them.
- Go to Dashboard > Updates and click the re-install option to make sure all the core WP files are re-uploaded with clean versions.
- Change your WordPress salt keys in your wp-config.php file – https://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/salt/
- Make sure your hosting company has a built-in firewall and login limiting rates (so if someone doesn’t enter the right password several times it blocks them). If they don’t then you should install a plugin for this.
- Run your site through Sucuri to make sure you are safe – https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/
That should help you get things going. The most important part though after the site is cleaned is to make sure you are keeping all your themes, plugins and WordPress up to date. Even if the themes or plugins aren’t active.

Hi AJ. My page builder is acting strangely. Whenever I add a new vc element or save an element the page scrolls down to the bottom of the page, meaning that I have to scroll back up and find my place. Have you encountered this before?

hi, We are currently on Total version 1.1. We would like to upgrade to latest version. If we just override the theme folder will be fine, or do we need to perform any additional steps. Thanks
Version 1.1 is from 2013 so you’ll have some steps to do. More importantly you should never update a theme by overriding theme files (if you want to update via FTP you must delete the theme and re-upload it because sometimes files are removed so if you override the folder you may have files on the server that are no longer used and can break things).

as this is locked to one domain i would like to install it a few times on my site. as in the following
www.website.com – as in production site
dev.website.com – sub domain of above for development
i know some themes class this as two sites?

Hi there,
You can install the theme on as many development sites as needed, the only thing you can’t do is “activate” the license on multiple installations. But the license is only used for updates and demo importer so it’s not required to have the theme license active anyway. Everything in the theme will still work 100% (theme settings, page builder, etc)
Plus you can always activate/deactivate on the domains as needed. For example if you setup a development site first and activate the theme you can always de-activate the license after you move everything over to the live site and then activate it there.
Also, if you are using a multi-site installation with sub-domain mapping and you activate the license on the primary site then it will remain active for all sub-sites.

Automatic update has deleted all my changes in customize theme and replaced them with demo content… that’s really annoying
That’s actually impossible. Because when WordPress updates a theme it only replaces the theme files, but the customizer settings are stored in the database.
If you were using a child theme by any chance can you double check to make sure your child theme is still active and not the parent?

Or…did you by any chance rename the theme “Total” on your server to something else? If you did, you will have to rename it back to whatever custom name you were using. WordPress saves all customizer settings based on the folder name of the theme. So if you updated and it renamed the folder back to Total then it will look like your settings are gone, but it’s because your theme isn’t the same name now.

Hi, Do we have the ability to create a minimized hamburger menu in Total similar to the below site :

In case we don’t have this functionality in Total yet, are there any plans to add the same going forward? This is a good format for landing pages to help minimise distractions.

You can choose to display the Total mobile menu on desktops if you want and use that one (overlay style). More info here:

A bug! maybe …
I tried to install Woocommerce plugin, it went fine but I noticed the Woocommerce wizard did not start although the plugin is activated already.
I went to Woocommerce wizard to run it manually but I got a blank page with an error saying i do not have access to this page
I de-activated all the plugins i have installed one by one to see which one is causing the problem and as soon as i deactivate the total Theme the woocommerce Wizard runs fine.
I tried it twice and same thing.
I think it is something you need to take a look at it.

Hi,
The WooCommerce Wizard is disabled by default to prevent conflicts with the Demo Importer (because the demo importer uses ajax and when you enable WooCommerce via the demo importer it will try and redirect to the WooCommerce Wizard).
So, simply go to Theme Panel and disable the demo importer if you want to use the Wizard

ps: I noticed your support license has expired, if at this time you can renew your support license I would really appreciate it. You can also purchase a new copy of the theme for another site/client and it will also renew your support. A support renewal is around $41 so if instead you purchase a new license of the theme you essentially will get a new license for only $17 to use on another site and a support renewal. If financially you can’t at this time I understand but would really appreciate it since I spend a lot of time and money supporting and updating the product – thank you!
