Hey Guys…I’m in the market for an Excellent WP premium theme to use on my new digital marketing business site plus client sites…and I like that ‘Total’ vs other premium themes in my Favourites list, scores highly see… http://themecheck.org/score/wordpress-theme-total-v1_1_7_0.html Yet when i see your theme was 1st made in 2013 that concerns me that maybe its too bloated/outdated tech etc, or perhaps not as good as a premium theme made this year with latest! I’m not a developer/coder etc and so have have NO understanding as to whether this is a Valid Concern…But 1) could give me a a response to this. 2) I’ve been reading that Beaver Builder is the way best v other page builders and so wish to use this…Is ‘Total’ compatible and do you recommend or NOT & WHY? Thanks Rick
Hi Rick,
This is AJ the theme developer.
First of all the site http://themecheck.org/ – doesn’t really offer any real valid argument for using a specific theme. All it does is run the theme unit checker which is a checker that checks for standard requires for WordPress.org themes which doesn’t make a theme better or worse it just means it adheres to the requirements for hosting a free theme on WordPress.org. You could have a theme with a perfect score that is completely broken and full of malware and a theme with a score of 50 that is fully functional, very user friendly and good looking. So don’t trust that site, these type of sites make money from referring people to themes so they’ll really do whatever to convince you, they aren’t personally downloading the themes and reading through the code and trying them out.
Second the theme in the URL isn’t this theme, it’s a free theme that was created many years after my theme to try and steal away some of my potential customers
Nothing I can do about it. If you really want to learn about Total here are some good links:
- https://totalwptheme.com/ (landing page so you can view demos).
- https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/total-wordpress-theme-anatomy/ (theme anatomy so you can see it’s core parts)
- https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/importing-sample-data/ (demo importer)
- https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/building-pages-visual-composer/ (included page builder)
Regarding your question about Beaver Builder…it is a very nice builder and I do have some customers using it with Total and they have no problems, but it’s actually not that popular. Total includes the most popular builder named “WPBakery Page Builder” which is very easy to use and intuitive. However, recently a lot of my repeat customers have been using Elementor with Total which is probably the second most popular builder and one of the best (way better then Beaver in my and many people’s opinion). Total has full support for Elementor and even some built-in tweaks so you can use the Total Header/Footer builder function by assigning an Elementor template to be used as your header or footer or even dynamic template – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGYuBjqkj8Q
You really could pick any theme if you are using a builder such as Beaver, Elementor or the included WPBakery. The reason to choose a theme like Total is because it’s highly modular (built with hooks and filters), supports popular plugins, it’s well coded, well optimized and includes top notch support
In terms of what builder you decide to use with whatever theme you pick is mostly due to personal preference as they all work slightly different and offer different modules/designs. There is nothing wrong with testing each one before making a final choice (note you can only activate one page builder at a time on the site if you activate more then one they will conflict).
The MOST important theme for your site is honestly not the theme you choose it’s your hosting. With any page builder you’ll want to make sure you have a quality web host so your site is fast and it’s not a pain in the butt to build pages if your server is slowing you down.
I hope this helps you in your quest for finding that perfect theme and hopefully you choose Total
Money is great, but for me educating and helping people is just as satisfying.
If you have any other questions let me know!

5 ★★★★★ Best & Most Thorough Support Answer Ever…Hands Down! Thanks AJ
Hey AJ,
Since your reply re page-builders, and after seeing the page-builders in action I have now decided to use ‘Elementor’ as my preferred Page-Builder, due to its speed, easier faster (less clicks) interface, inline editing, ability to quickly edit for Mobile devices etc etc.
So I’m glad to hear you say Elementor is fully supported…nice.
You probably missed, or avoided, lol, the other concern I raised, that being purchasing a theme 1st made so many years ago!?
Again I don’t know if this is a valid concern, not being a coder, maybe latest tech/code is already used and the old stuff disgarded, so all good when buying and downloading the latest version of ‘Total’...but can you give me a few lines as to how buying a theme 1st made many years ago, IS NOT a valid concern, just to put my mind at rest…last pre-sale question, I promise…cheers Rick
Hey Rick, I just replied to your other comment/concern
If you have any other questions let me know.

Is anybody else having problems running Yoast SEO’s “Count links in your texts” and “Analyze your content” features while the Total theme is enabled? The feature works fine while I’m using a simple theme like Twenty Seventeen but not while using Total. Thanks.
Hi,
Total itself shouldn’t cause issues, since it doesn’t load any conflicting scripts in the backend, but Yoast SEO doesn’t work with many popular page builders because it doesn’t parse shortcode (unfortunately) if you try on a page with the WPBakery page builder disabled doe it work better?
- AJ
Hi AJ, thanks for getting back to me. I disabled ALL plugins on my staging site (including WPBakery) and the problem persisted. I then changed to the Twenty Seventeen theme and the Yoast features worked fine. So as far as I can tell, it is not a plugin conflict.
Hi,
Thank you for your patience. I was sick pretty much all of last week
I do use Yoast on my live site and have just double checked locally to record a video for you showing it should work – https://cl.ly/sMEL also most customers do use Yoast SEO and haven’t reported any problems. So it really shouldn’t be theme related, of course it is possible but I can’t recreate it.
Do you see see any errors in the browser console?
- AJ
AJ, hope you’re feeling better, and thanks for getting back to me. I’m not having any problems with the parts of Yoast you demonstrate in your video.
I do see one error in the console, but it seems to be related to a browser extension. My problem is shown in this video: https://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cF1FF0FXAK
When I run the “Count links in your texts” in a different browser without browser extensions (Opera) Yoast’s “Count links in your texts” behaves the same way, but I don’t see the extension-related error in the console.
I can’t change my theme on my live site, but when I go to my staging site and switch themes, Yoast’s “Count links in your texts” worked fine.
Anyway, it’s not a critical issue but this feature of Yoast Premium does look useful given the size of my site: https://yoast.com/how-to-use-the-text-link-counter/
Hi there,
I tested this tool as well and it ran just fine and I got this at the end – https://cl.ly/sLEm (sorry I thought I could run it multiple times so I didn’t capture a video the first time).
I do have Yoast Premium so I ran the analyzer and that works as well, I did capture a video for this – https://cl.ly/sLA3 – it does run pretty slow though (testing with different themes all of them run slow). But it does run. Have you tried seeking help from the Yoast team yet?
It took the Yoast function almost 10 minutes to only check 39 pages! Seem like some issue in their coding or simply the function needs to run a lot of checks. (i paused and resumed the video a few times so it wasn’t so long). It also made my Mac start to run really hot and the fans were going full speed…
I actually disable this function on wpexplorer.com/blog/ completely. I find it best to just use tags for organizing related content on the site (but disabling tag archives on the live end to prevent duplicate content) or after you are done writing a post do a google search on your site like site.com:some keywords so you can find what Google considers to be related which in my opinion is best
Plus if you have the related posts function enabled on your blog though by default it fetches related posts based on the current category so it’s already going to be adding a few relevant inner links.
- AJ
ps: It’s possible your server is just timing out since the process does seem quite long…Maybe an increase in your max execution time could help?
Yes, I did try Yoast support. I went through various permutations of disabling plugins, changing themes, etc. until I finally got the feature to work. We were working on my staging site which isn’t 100% identical to my live site (the staging site uses free versions instead of premium versions, for example) so what worked on the staging site may not work on the live site.
Anyway, I agree that there are other ways to work on internal linking so let’s set this issue aside for now.
Thanks again!
Hi AJ, I am trying to add your theme (fresh license, just downloaded yesterday) to a pre-existing site, and when i go to upload the installable theme total.zip, I’m getting an odd message from the WP system that “the link you followed has expired. Please try again.” (linking back to the theme upload screen). I have switched the theme to 2016 and disabled all plugins. Still the same message. Any ideas? Thanks! Bill
and the site is https://www.berkshireroots.com/staging/
Hi Bill,
Unfortunately the WordPress message isn’t very helpful but basically you’ll get this error if the server times out at some point thus creating an “expired” error.
- Make sure that you are uploading just the Total.zip file.
- Make sure your upload limit on the server is at least 20MB (usually the error is from a low upload limit)
- Make sure your PHP memory limit is at least 256MB (not usually the cause for the error but can potentially cause it) – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/increasing-memory-limit-to-php/
Of course you can always upload via FTP if needed, but usually increasing the upload limit on the server fixes it right up.

Thanks for choosing Total by the way
The EPO plugin and latest WooCommerce does not work with the latest version of Total, can you please update it asap.
Thanks.
Hi,
I don’t own a copy of the plugin to test and see what could be wrong. Any chance you can open a private ticket and send it to us so we can have a look – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/
Did you try enabling WP_Debug on the server to see if there are any errors? http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/enabling-wp-debug/
- AJ
Hi, Well like the author of EPO plugin says in his comment: “Your case as many other cases is because of your theme. It is not compatible with the WooCommerce 3.4 template system. Its overrides use the woocommerce_before_add_to_cart_button hook in the wrong obsolete place and this has the effect of the options being displayed twice. The huge white gap you are seeing is a second set of options.”
Got the issue go away by disabling /woocommerce/single-product/add-to-cart/variable.php file in Total. Looked the source before disabling, and the extra product options were duplicated and therefore didn’t work.
Thanks.
Hi,
Thanks for the followup.
Yes, this has already been fixed in the upcoming Total update. The only thing that needs doing is removing the woocommerce_before_add_to_cart_button hook from the variable.php (no need to remove the file completely).
Whenever there is a WooCommerce update I make all needed updates in any template file within the theme but I usually don’t push out an update the same day as WooCommerce because there has been many times where there are big bugs in WooCommerce updates so I wait a bit to make sure there aren’t any big bugs before pushing out the theme update with the tweaks – since if I tweak the theme customers are now forced to update WooCommerce as well.
- AJ
And actually this WooCommerce modification wasn’t in 3.4 this was edited in 3.4.1 (aka a fix from 3.4) – again the reason for waiting a little to update the theme
Hi, I did remove the woocommerce_before_add_to_cart_button hook first, but didn’t help. There’s something else… I’ll let you know if I manage to make it work without removing the whole file.
This is the whole updated file – https://cl.ly/sCHW – to match the WooCommerce changes, the only thing different is the moving of the “clear” link so the table look better an prevents a “jump” when selecting variations. This is the updated file for upcoming Total 4.7 if you want to try it out.

Hello i left the total theme in my basket and when i was about to buy it , it said it was $39 I also still had my tab open of the total theme demo site and even there it says $39. But now its telling me to pay $59, please help. thanks
Hi,
This is AJ the theme developer.
The theme was on discount for Memorial Week (a national holiday in the USA) but it ended yesterday morning. If you still see $39 on the landing page it’s cached by your browser, it should say $59.
When the theme is on discount we usually lose money on each sale because of the cut Envato takes, taxes, advertising, support/hosting costs, etc. So we can’t afford to be on sale all the time.
There are also many rules on this marketplace regarding sales and customer incentives, so I can’t just swap the price for a single person. However, if you are looking to buy multiple licenses we do offer bulk discounts

Hi, Post Grid and Post Masonary Grid allow custom post types and various categories but is there a way to show a mix of different custom post types in a grid ? thanx in advance for your help
Hi,
You can query multiple post types via a custom query like such:
post_type%5B%5D=staff &post_type%5B%5D=portfolio &posts_per_page=-1 &post_status=publish &order_by=date &order=DESC
Example: https://cl.ly/s3RX
The reason “%5B” and “%5D” are used is because you can’t use ‘[]’ due to how the WPBakery plugin parses brackets inside a shortcode to prevent conflicts.
You could also use the Total Post Types Grid and select the post types you want – https://cl.ly/s2Ug
- AJ
fantastic AJ, thank you – no idea what %5B….. stands for though
?
It’s just encoded versions of a bracket. So it’s basically the same as writing:
post_type[]=staff &post_type[]=portfolio &posts_per_page=-1 &post_status=publish &order_by=date &order=DESC
But because shortcodes are written as [shortcode_name argument=”value”] you can’t have extra [] inside it because it will break the shortcode but using the encoded version is fine

Hello AJ,
I’m using the below css for styling links on my site.
The .wpb_text_column works great (I think you gave me this code) but I can’t get a link on the homepage, within an h1 tag, to show blue (#0055FF) on hover?
I suspect, as usual, I’m missing something obvious. http://aroundorover.comThanks Pete –
body .wpb_text_column a { border-bottom: dotted 1px #252525; }
body .wpb_text_column a:hover { border-bottom: none; text-decoration: none; }
body .wpex-entry h1 a { color: #252525; border-bottom: dotted 1px #252525; }
body .wpex-entry h1 a:hover { color: #0055FF border-bottom: none; text-decoration: none; }
Hi Pete,
You can target the homepage exclusively using body.home like this:
body.home h1 a {
// Your edits
}
But also Total doesn’t use “wpex-entry” anywhere though so that last bit of code shouldn’t be doing anything. You would want to target just the ”.entry” class.
- AJ
Thanks very much AJ – I’ve tried that, and a couple of variations, but can’t get the hover state color change to happen? Is it clashing with something I have set in the customiser maybe?
Pete
body.home h1 a { border-bottom: dotted 1px #252525; }
body .home h1 a:hover { border-bottom: none; text-decoration: none; color: #0055FF }
You have an extra space between body.home in the second line of code
Arrrrgggghhh flippin’eck, so sorry AJ Thank you Pete

Hi AJ, Could you please provide the css to Center-align the logo when the site viewed on mobile devices?
Please access www.burhani.co from your mobile and you will notice the logo to be left aligned and it’s just looks off.
The css should not affect the logo on desktop views.
Would appreciate your response. Thanks
Hi,
The reason the logo is on the left is because header style two could have content on the right side. But the CSS is very easy:
@media only screen and (max-width: 959px) {
#site-logo { width: 100% !important; float: none !important; text-align: center !important; }
}
The !important attributes may not be needed but I added incase to make sure they always override.

- AJ
Hi I am looking to buy this theme, but before I do, I would need to know if the theme have settings to show/hide the header (logo and menu) on some individual pages. Thanks.
Hi,
This is AJ the theme developer. I hope you had a nice weekend.
Yes the theme includes a custom metabox – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/page-settings-metabox/ – under the page editor so you can easily make some per-page alterations such as disabling the header on specific pages (or the footer, callout, etc).
There are also global settings for any setting you can tweak per page so the settings are just for making per-page tweaks.
Total also has a bunch of hooks/filters available – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/action-hooks/ – if you need to make more advanced edits. This is one of the main reasons people choose Total over other theme’s due to it’s flexibility. And I have tons of sample snippets here – http://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/snippets/
If you have any other questions let me know.

Hi,
The “total” widgets are no longer working on my website. For example the total product carousel, the sign up form at the bottom, and the mobile menu isnt working. Ive disabled all plugins to see if that was the issue but the problem still persists, my theme is currently running on the most recent version. Please advise. https://shop.herhustle.org/
Hi,
There is a javacript error on the site – https://cl.ly/s0j4 – coming from some custom code added near the bottom of the site which is used for tracking which is breaking all javascript related functions on the theme. Looks like you have a bunch of additional tracking code but the core gtag script is missing from your site which should be added before this code (in the head tag is usually best) – https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/gtagjs/
- AJ
I am replying to my comment earlier by scuddy. I am now logged in as the purchaser, but unsure how to reply. You asked for our website. It is pacexpo.ca
I think I have found the problem. I downloaded the plugin Jetpack. When I disable it everything seems to work correctly again. It originally worked correctly, but an update must have broken it.
Hi,
I hope you had a nice weekend!
I do see a javascript error on the site which is breaking various scripts on the site but it’s not coming from JetPack – https://cl.ly/s1DQ – it’s coming from some custom Vimeo code added to the site. Simply change the $ symbol in your custom vimeo code to jQuery or define the $:
(function($){
// YOUR CODE HERE
})(jQuery);
or:
jQuery(document).ready(function($){
// YOUR CODE HERE
});
- AJ
I fixed the issue you mention above, but when I re-activate JetPack I see the same issue I had before
Are you able to keep JetPack active so I can look? Total and Revslider are 100% compatible with JetPack so you shouldn’t have any error and the only way I can assist is if I can see for myself. Thanks!
- AJ
I actually found the problem with JetPack. It has an option called Lazy Load Images. I had turned it on and this created my problem. I have now turned it off so it works the way it should.
Oh yes, that would cause issues. I forgot they added Lazy Load more recently.
Is this something you will address so we can use it or is a complete no go?
It’s just not possible to add a “fix” inside the theme because of how LazyLoad works. However, you can use the jetpack “skip-lazy” class added to any image – https://cl.ly/sBKF – that you want to skip from their function as mentioned on the docs – https://jetpack.com/support/lazy-images/ – it wouldn’t be goo for Slider Revolution to manually add this to all of it’s images by default.
- AJ
Hi,
Is it possible to move the Product title above the Product Image on the Single product page? My product titles are very long and they break (words cut-off) on the right side off the product image. It would be nice if there is a hook to move the product title above the product image.
Much appreciated!
HI,
Yes, this is very easy. Do you want to add the title inside the page header area that says “Shop” by default? Or just above the image?
See here: https://cl.ly/rziz
Both very easy to do with a little code in the child theme’s functions.php
- AJ
Hi, I need to use the Advanced query for sorting but I can’t seem to figure out the correct syntax to use to query by a custom taxonomy of Dwelling type (slug of dwelling) and the Dwelling Type of House (slug house). This is what I tried: post_type=listing&post_status=publish&posts_per_page=12&pagination=1&tax_query_taxonomy=dwelling&tax_query_terms=house&meta_key=wpcf-listing-status&orderby[meta_value_num]=ASC&orderby[menu_order]=ASC&orderby[date]=DESC and: post_type=listing&post_status=publish&posts_per_page=12&pagination=1&tax_query_taxonomy=dwelling&tax_query_field=slug&tax_query_terms=house&meta_key=wpcf-listing-status&orderby[meta_value_num]=ASC&orderby[menu_order]=ASC&orderby[date]=DESC and also: post_type=listing&post_status=publish&posts_per_page=12&pagination=1&taxonomy=dwelling&terms=house&meta_key=wpcf-listing-status&orderby[meta_value_num]=ASC&orderby[menu_order]=ASC&orderby[date]=DESC but they didn’t worked. I always got all of the listings being displayed. Could you please let me know what the correct syntax should be. Thank you.
Hi,
The issue is that tax_query_taxonomy & tax_query_terms don’t actually exist. WordPress only has a tax_query parameter.
You should be able to do this though:
....pagination=1&dwelling=house
WordPress is smart enough to pull it. Alternatively you can do this:
tax_query[0][taxonomy]=dwelling&tax_query[0][field]=slug&tax_query[0][terms]=house
- AJ
Thanks again, that worked great!
Hi AJ when viewing the frontend for yewlodge.cwcdev.co.uk on the home page the section for the 4 grid bit (images and text) where you told me to remove the margins at the bottom – it now doesn’t display correctly on a mobile?
The reason it doesn’t show on mobile is because you have columns with background images where you have the images. These columns don’t have any height to them because they don’t have any content. So you would want to add a spacing module inside these empty columns with background images so they render on mobile or give the columns a min-height value – https://cl.ly/rzap
- AJ
I also have a visual composer tab element. But when I link to a second tab with local scroll it does not open the 2nd tab.
Is that possible?
thanks
Hi,
It would be possible but it would require quite a bit of custom javascript for each item. When you click on the local scroll link you would have to trigger a click on the tab you want to open as well.
I would strongly recommend against it though for usability. Wouldn’t this be better done with different pages and not tabs?
- AJ
You are right. thanks!
I am having trouble getting my column boxes to have a space between them. I’ve tried inner column gap, only adds more space below (makes the semi-transparent border longer at the bottom). Outer column cap works to create the border effect. But nothing helps to get a space between my boxes.
Any idea how I can fix that? See 3 blocks under work with me (scroll down).
http://new.masteringtheartofmanifesting.com/homeNevermind chose another route
Thanks for letting me know
Hello AJ.
I came across this plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/image-focus/) and i am wondering if this is something which can be used t control the cropping of the header images, for instance.
Thanks!
If you want to use plugins like this you would probably need to go to Theme Panel > Image Sizes and disable the first option “Enable on-the-fly dynamic image cropping.” So that the theme will use native post thumbnails regeneration.
What “header” images are you referring to? If you are referring to the page title with background – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/page-header-backgrounds/ – this displays your images in full. So you would want to either crop before upload or just use the image cropping options in WordPress – https://www.wpexplorer.com/editing-images-wordpress/
- AJ
Thanks AJ. Yes, i was talking about the page title with image background. The client is trying to come up with a way to have a “focus point” so that, when in smaller devices, the interest point is still visible.
I guess the best way is to have the image crop center center and, as you suggest, carefully crop before upload.
Hi,
I hope you had a nice weekend.
So the background image is actually set as a cover size. This is so that the background will always cover the same width/height as the page title no matter what as to not leave any empty space.
Depending on how large the images are what you can do is alter the background style – https://cl.ly/s2Yu – to see if another one better matches your current design and photos (this setting can also be changed globally or conditionally via the “wpex_page_header_background_image_style” filter).
You could also hide the images on mobile and display a solid background or you could disable the page title completely and instead insert a simple image at the top of these pages or a slider via Slider Revolution.
If you can share a sample URL I can give you my personal advice.
- AJ
Hi AJ. Thank you once more. I believe your suggested solution (fixed center, for instance) and a crefull cropping of the image cold help in most situations. This is a good example: https://www.malcolmdrilling.com/press/
Thanks.
Hi,
I’m just checking to see if you were able to get things looking better or wanted some further recommendation?
I hope you are having a nice weekend,
- AJ
Thanks for the contact AJ.
I am waiting for some client feedback regarding this issue but i think we will go with the carefull cropping of images and i’ll tweak the css to have all those page header background images crop center center, for instance. This will give a more detailed control and able us to define not a focus point but, ate least, a “focus band” of sorts.
Thanks again for the continued support to your clients. Have a great week.
Hello, I want to add Widgets to sidebar, and I want to add Portfolio Categories to Widgets, but from Available Widgets, I can not find Portfolio Categories, how to do? Thanks/
Hi,
You have a few options:
1. You can create a new menu under Appearance > Menus and add your categories. Then use a menu widget on the sidebar.
2. You can use the “Tag Cloud” widget – https://cl.ly/ryuw
3. You can create a new template under WPBakery > Templates and insert the Categories Grid module – https://cl.ly/rzTE – then you can add it to your sidebar via the “Templatera” widget. This method allows you to display the category images if you wanted.
- AJ
I had not used looked at my site for a few days and got a report that my revolution slider was not showing any pictures. I went to the edit page and then selected Preview Changes. Everything looks fine, but if I view that page the slider does not work. Any ideas. I also have an Image Carousel on the same page and it shows correctly in the preview, but too deep on the preview.
Can you share the URL of the page with the issue so I can inspect the code?
Also can you please log in with the account used to purchase the theme, thank you!
- AJ
