Hello, I just installed your theme and the portfolios aren’t displaying, and I don’t know why. I have some existing content and also imported some demo content, but neither displays, so I don’t think it’s a mistake I’m making. The demo overview page is shown fine, but when I click on a specific portfolio page, the portfolio content doesn’t display. Please see here: https://disobedientrobots.com/portfolio-item/blue-boxing-robot/
Also, it seems I cannot disable the sidebar. I’ve turned the sidebar off in the General Settings, and removed all plugins, but it still appears as a blank white space, and I don’t know how to remove it. Specifically from Pages, see as an example here: https://disobedientrobots.com/web-development/
Hi,
Sorry for any confusion. Can you make sure you’ve enabled the Total Theme Core plugin as noted on the changelog: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/changelog/ (unfortunately I don’t have any better way of notifying customers of this change).
That should fix up the portfolio items.
Regarding the sidebar it seems you have figured it out since it’s no longer on the site. Basically you want to go to Appearance > Customize > General > Pages and switch the main layout for your pages so they do not have a sidebar.

Hi AJ,
Like a few of the other users, I noticed a sentence saying ‘Upgrade Total Theme Core’, then a list of plugins that needed to be updated.
That’s just it though – it was just a bolded sentence – no link to the Core anywhere, meaning like many other users I had to roll back my whole site with my host when I saw loads of WPBakery codes.
Having found the ‘Core’ file in a link above, I just re-did the downloads and all works fine again now, but shouldn’t there be a link to the file rather than just a bolded sentence?
Hi,
That’s very weird. You should have seen an installation link. Not sure why it wouldn’t have been there like this: https://cl.ly/eda5a5 (just took the screenshot from another server so I just tested the update to see).
I can’t really think of any possible way it would be different for certain customers. I’ll try on a few different environments to see if I can recreate the issue.
Either-way, you can always access the bundled plugins under Appearance > Install Plugins as noted in the docs for future reference.
Let me know if you have any issues with the update. Some customers reported a few which will be fixed later today in a 4.9.2 update – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/upcoming-update-changelog/

Hi AJ. how are you?
Thank you for the great update as always!
Could you please make a check to the Total Social Profile Icons widget? I noticed that any change I try to apply in the dimension section doens’t work (general size, icon sizes, border radius).
I don’t know if it is something that depends on me or if there is a theme problem, thank you very much!

Hey Bob,
I’m not seeing the ticket yet. I think it takes a bit for the HelpScout system to generate it. Thanks for the heads up on the bug!
It’s actually a small error on my part forgetting to pass a variable to a sanitize function. So I updated the total-theme-core zip on my server so that people installing it get the fix right away.
To fix on your site is going to be a bit tricky. Basically you would have to switch themes for a quick second so you can de-activate and delete the Total theme Core plugin then re-enable the Total theme and re-install the plugin.
Or do this… https://cl.ly/ce9961 (comment out the line forcing the total theme core to be enabled this way you can delete it without de-activating Total and re-install it so it pulls the fixed version).
Note: I haven’t changed the version number on the server, I just patched it. The version number will change in the next theme update.
Otherwise if you send me FTP logins I can fix it manually for you or you can wait for the next update. I released a 4.9.1 with some bigger fixes today but I may do a 4.9.2 tomorrow. This was a massive update/undertaking and there will probably be some other small bugs. I spent 3 days testing but the theme is so massive i probably missed some stuff.
Please do let me know if you see anything else!
- AJ
Thank you AJ, I’m not in hurry, I’ll wait for the next update, thank you SO MUCH for your great support!
No, thank you for always finding and reporting the bugs! You are a valuable customer.
- AJ
By the way..I never got a ticket. Hum…Next time you submit a ticket if you don’t get a reply let me know. I see lots of tickets from other customers coming in without problem but if you are having issues I’ll want to look into it so you don’t think we are ignoring you!
Hello AJ, thank you very much for your kind words, as you know I love Total and It is a pleasure to know that I can contribute minimally to perfecting it.
I have not opened a ticket, I just contacted you here because I know you always reply to everyone with great patience and professionalism.
Maybe the lack of sleep, but I thought you said you submitted a ticket but when I go back to read the comment you never said that. Ha!
Anyway thanks again for being such a great customer,
- AJ
Hi AJ,
How are you doing?
I just opened up a support ticket due to a problem after updating to the latest theme version 4.9.1.
I updated the theme this morning and it looks like the whole website is now showing a mix of code where titles, and other features typically show up.
Also the menus are missing items, etc. I’m not sure where to start looking, but I would appreciate some direction on this issue as soon as you possibly can.
I do have a recent backup of the whole site, so please advise as to what you need me to do.
Thank you Neil
Thanks for taking care of the problem AJ. That was super quick and much appreciated!
Hope you get some sleep soon. Have a nice weekend.
Neil
No problem. Sorry for the initial troubles.
Have a nice weekend yourself,
- AJ
Hi Aj,
My site was broken after updating the theme to 4.9 and my heart almost stopped. I’m glad I saw the comment where you provided the fixed core plugin.
So whoever experienced issues after updating the theme to 4.9, don’t panic (like I was lol). Here are the steps:
1. Install this plugin: https://totalwptheme.s3.amazonaws.com/plugins/total-theme-core/version-1-0-1/total-theme-core.zip
2. Update the theme to the latest 4.9.1
3. Relax. Have a beer, coffee or tea
4. Send love to Aj for the hard work
Thank you for constantly working on this theme man, appreciate it.
Regards, Brando
Glad you saw that Brando!
And by the way, I also just released 4.9.1 with the fixes so anyone updating now should be good to go. If you do experience any other problems, have any questions or suggestions do let me know.
I’m not sleeping tonight to make sure everyone updating has a smooth update. So if you want to send over some coffee with that love, I would really appreciate it
- AJ
Great! Tnx a lot man. I will email you one of these days about some challenges that I have. I also need to review all the new things and what was fixed in the new theme to be up to date.
Here it is man, just for you: https://media2.giphy.com/media/7qV3yswT0K8hi/giphy.gifHave a great wknd.
-Brando
Haha, looks tasty
Hello, since todays update it totaly broke my 2 websites. Following error:
Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function vcex_inline_style() in /www/doc/www.instagain.eu/www/wp-content/themes/Total/framework/vendor/wpbakery/shortcode-mods/vc_column_text.php:157 Stack trace: #0 /www/doc/www.instagain.eu/www/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(288): VCEX_VC_Column_Text_Config::custom_output(’\n\t \n
I installed core plugin. My site is still broken. You can check full error on www.instagain.cz
I even tried to delete them and install it again. Still not working
Thanks so much for letting me know of the issue with vcex_inline_style – I added an extra check for that.
Also looks like the other issue is a type I wrote wp_son_encode instead of wp_json_encode
Here is the fixed plugin: https://totalwptheme.s3.amazonaws.com/plugins/total-theme-core/version-1-0-1/total-theme-core.zip
I will release a Total 4.9.1 in a few minutes with the fixes as well. Thank you for the heads up! Please do let me know if you find any other issues.
- AJ
Now it works. Thanks
Thank you for reporting the bugs! Let me know if you see anything else.
- AJ
Hi, I updated my site https://www.slipless.com.au/ to theme v4.9 and it is not loading now. Can you please have a look?
Thanks.
Kenny
Hi Kenny,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I see that you haven’t installed/activated the new Total Theme Core plugin, please do this first – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/changelog/
This will help fix issues with shortcodes not displaying such as in the Top Bar.
Besides this, it does seem that there may be a PHP error on your singular post any chance you can enable WP_Debug on the server to see what could be causing the problem with the page not loading (enabling debug will enable error notices on the page? Thanks! – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/enabling-wp-debug/
- AJ
sorry, noticed that you have a new plugin called total-core. once installed it is all good now. Thanks
Oh great! Glad it was an easy fix. Do let me know if you encounter any other problems though.
Sorry it’s not very easy to “warn” people about the addition of this plugin. I wish there was a way I could email my customers directly but it’s not possible on ThemeForest
- AJ
Hello support, since the installation of “unlimited addons for WP-Bakery” I’m not be able to see the category “total” and I got an error message via E-Mail. Can you help me?
Since WordPress 5.2 there is a built-in feature that detects when a plugin or theme causes a fatal error on your site, and notifies you with this automated email.
In this case, WordPress caught an error with your theme, Total.
Error Details
An error of type E_COMPILE_ERROR was caused in line 45 of the file …/wp-content/themes/Total/functions.php. Error message: require_once(): Failed opening required ’.../wp-content/themes/Total/framework/theme-mods.php’ (include_path=’.:/opt/plesk/php/7.0/share/pear’)
Hi,
This is AJ the theme author. The error you mention shouldn’t be triggered by the Ultimate Addons Plugin (unless they are doing some weird stuff).
Basically the error is saying that one of the core theme files “theme-mods.php” can not be found and thus loaded causing the site to crash. This file should be located in every version of the Total theme and so the error can only happen if the theme is partially installed or if there are server errors preventing access to the file.
My first recommendation would be to access the server via FTP to see if the file is actually missing because if the file is on the server (at the location stated in the error notice – /wp-content/themes/Total/framework/theme-mods.php ) it means the issue is with server permissions (can happen with some servers when uploading themes via FTP that aren’t configured properly for WordPress). The alternative is to try and delete and re-install the theme to see if all the files get installed properly.
Let me know how I can further assist or if you have any followup questions.

I had a custom action placing a button on the top bar left (content) and socials on the right. Since 4.9 it has moved everything together and I don’t know how to get it back to where it was. Can you help?
Hi,
The CSS for the top bar has changed a bit to use Flex items for the left/right positioning. Can you try clearing your site and browser cache first to make sure it’s not just a caching issue? If that doesn’t help please share the URL so I can take a quick look. Thanks!
- AJ
The original (unchanged) site is knox.vic.edu.au (not updated as yet). The updated test site is knox.vic.edu.au/bup19. You can see the top bar is different but the same code. It’s not a caching issue. I can privately send the css and action code or login details if you wish.
I had a play with css and it’s back where I want it. Not sure if my code is kosher but it works.
Oh I see. How are you adding that button? Because when I inspect the code it’s actually located in the general topbar which makes things more complex and in an ideal world you would place your button right into the content area instead: https://cl.ly/ebddcf
I’m not sure how you managed to get the content added outside of the actual top-bar-content element which is why it’s not placed correctly and you need to use CSS to place it.
Can you tell me how you’ve added this content? Thanks!
- AJ
+61 3 8805 3800 info@knox.vic.edu.au
and the css is .community {height: 160px; max-height: 100px; color: #1e3b6d; font-size: 14px; padding-top: 30px; padding-bottom:30px; } .community a {color:#ffffff !important; text-decoration:none;}
If you can give me another way to get the same result (that also works on mobiles) please let me know
Hi,
Instead of placing the code via the wpex_hook_topbar_inner hook, why not add it in the customizer under Appearance > Customize > Top Bar > Content : https://cl.ly/03878f
The field accepts shortcodes and HTML so there should be no need to use the hook.
Now, if you rather control the code via your child theme what you can do is make a new shortcode for your content, example:
add_shortcode( 'topbar_content', function() {
return 'YOUR CODE HERE';
} );
Then insert [topbar_content] into the content field in the customizer.
- AJ
Thanks AJ, I’ve done that and it works perfectly. Many thanks and keep up the great work.
Awesome! Just let me know if you need anything else
- AJ
Hi, I had added the code below to functions.php to load the missing .vc_custom_* css for some elements. It seems that it’s not working with the latest 4.9.0 update (and the latest WPBakery):
// Add vc custom css when processing custom content shortcodes
add_filter('doing_ccs_shortcode', 'my_ccs_content', 10, 1);
function my_ccs_content($result) {
if (preg_match('/vc_custom_\d+/', $result)) {
$shortcodes_custom_css = visual_composer()->parseShortcodesCustomCss( $result );
if ( ! empty( $shortcodes_custom_css ) ) {
$shortcodes_custom_css = strip_tags( $shortcodes_custom_css );
$result .= '<style type="text/css" data-type="vc_shortcodes-custom-css">';
$result .= $shortcodes_custom_css;
$result .= '</style>';
}
}
return $result;
}
Any advice?
Hmm it does not seem the problem is with my code related to the custom content plugin. It seems like a number of .vc_custom_* css code is not getting included for some reason. Looks like a problem with the theme.
For instance, on the page below, the vc_custom_1553546775580 class is not getting defined:
https://wednesdaynighthop.com/register/Hi,
So the action hook “doing_ccs_shortcode” is not part of WPBakery or the Total theme so I’m not sure what you were hooking into. When I do a Google search for “doing_ccs_shortcode” the only thing I can find is a plugin named “Custom Content Shortcode”. Is that something you are using?
It sounds like perhaps the “doing_ccs_shortcode” action hook is running too early before modules are being “mapped” so the parseShortcodesCustomCss method isn’t able to return anything.
I’m going to install the plugin right now and have a look. Since that’s the only thing I can find using the “doing_ccs_shortcode” hook I’m thinking this is what you are using. And I’ll get back to you when I see what’s up.
- AJ
Ok. I just tested that plugin and your code is working correctly for me. Here is a little video: https://cl.ly/ce6717
Are you maybe using a different plugin that has the same hook name? Or if you are using this plugin, how are you using it so I can test accordingly?
- AJ
Hi AJ, I don’t think the php code is related to the problem I see. Could you check why the vc_custom_1553546775580 css class is not getting loaded in the page below:
https://wednesdaynighthop.com/register/for the ‘Series Pricing? CLICK HERE’ button towards the top. This is pure WPBakery with a Total button, so there are no custom shortcodes involved here.
Hi,
The classname is defiantly there I did check this in the source code: https://cl.ly/7693bb – but for some reason your snippet isn’t actually placing the CSS On the page which could be an issue with the updated WPBakery plugin (not really an issue but a change in how it works) or an issue with the plugin you are using that is adding the “doing_ccs_shortcode” hook.
Can you please confirm that you are in fact using the plugin mentioned? Because the code you are using doesn’t do anything at all in of itself since the “doing_ccs_shortcode action hook doesn’t exist in the theme, WordPress or WPBakery. And if you are using the plugin please let me know so I can try recreating your scenario and be able to assist.
- AJ
Hi AJ,
As you saw, the class name is there but the corresponding css is not getting loaded. The custom content plugin and my doing_ccs_shortcode code are actually not involved here, so it has to do with the WPBakery plugin (and/or how the Total theme interacts with it).
Oh it looks like the latest updates fixed the issue. Could you tell me what the problem was?
Hmm looks like I was wrong, it’s not working again.
Hi,
Sorry if I didn’t explain things correctly previously, but basically the custom content plugin must be interacting with the code since that “doing_ccs_shortcode” action, which is the first line of that snippet, is not defined in the theme, wpbakery or WordPress.
Because this action is not found in anything I’ve ever worked with I had to do a Google search to figure out what your code even does and in my search I found that the action belongs specifically to that plugin you are using. You can try Googling “doing_ccs_shortcode” yourself so you can see, it actually took me some time to figure out where that action was defined.
You can see the action defined in the plugin here – https://cl.ly/fa185f
Basically what your snippet is doing is hooking into the plugin’s action and then trying to pull the CSS from WPBakery for a given shortcode. Now, since there has been some security improvements in WPBakery as well as some changes in hooks it’s possible that either the “doing_ccs_shortcode” action is running at a time where WPBakery can no longer access the CSS correctly and return it or there are some new checks in place preventing the CSS from returning.
So the changes in the updated WPBakery plugin means you will likely have to tweak your code a bit.
Now, I tested the plugin myself and didn’t have any issues as I showed earlier in a video so I wasn’t able to come up with a solution for you. The problem could be with the way you are using the custom shortcode plugin specifically to add this extra content.
I’m a bit curious to know how you even came up with that piece of code for your child theme without knowing it was a part of the plugin? Was this something that was provided to you? Because if it was provided to you by the folks over at WPBakery they should be able to help you fix it since they gave you the code in the first place.
Now, what’s confusing me is looking at the page – https://wednesdaynighthop.com/register/ – it looks like a standard page with page builder content which wouldn’t require a custom snippet to get the CSS correctly added to the page, unless it’s not a standard page and you are actually inserting the WPBakery content via another method (like the Custom Content Shortcode Plugin). In which case a better solution may be to actually create a template and insert the template under WPBakery > Templates and insert it on the page via Templatera shortcode which looks like this:
[templatera id="2"]
Because the template itself will pull the needed CSS without you having to use any extra code.
If you want you can open a private ticket so I can actually look at how things are setup and if you want send me FTP logins to see if I can simply help fixing your snippet. But I do think using a templatera template would be the best solution here. If you submit a ticket simply request it be assigned to me.
I hope this better helps explains things and what your code is actually doing and where it’s hooked into.
- AJ
Hi AJ,
I understood you. Please forget about the plugin, it has nothing to do with the problem. As explained before, I have a pure WPBakery with a Total button whose vc_custom_* class is not getting loaded. And I want to figure out why.
Do you know where the code to load vc_custom_* classes is located?
Hi,
So the vc_custom_* CSS is loaded automatically whenever you are building with the page builder. When you add custom design options to a module the CSS is saved on the same page in the post meta which is grabbed by WPBakery when the page is loaded and inserted into the site head tag.
I’m not sure what you are doing exactly that wouldn’t make the CSS automatically added to the page. My guess is probably you generated the WPBakery code on some other page and then copied and pasted it on this page which is why the CSS isn’t automatically added. Is that correct?
If so, the best solution is to create a template as I mentioned in my last reply and then add the template to the page this way the CSS will work automatically and you have a dedicated place where you can modify the template whenever needed.
Now, if you are not doing this but this is just a standard page created with the page builder, then the code should work correctly and I can take a look for you if it isn’t to see what’s going on. However, if this page is dynamically created via a plugin so while it looks like you are building it with the page builder in the backend, it’s actually displayed by a dynamic output in a plugin (some plugins like WooCommerce do this) it will cause the the function get_the_ID() to not return the actual page ID as created in the backend so the CSS won’t return correctly. In which case a quick fix is to simply load the CSS via a theme filter by targeting the actual page in the backend. Example:
add_filter( 'wpex_vc_css_ids', function( $ids ) {
$ids[] = 170;
return $ids;
} );
Simply replace 170 with the page ID that is holding your backend page builder content – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/locate-page-id/ – this will ensure the CSS is loaded on the site as needed.
Hopefully this helps. But again, if you want to send me logins I can see exactly how things are done and provide the best solution possible.
- AJ
I confirm that it is a standard page built with the page builder. Here is a screenshot from the backend: https://ibb.co/s1fWQ6j
You can see the Total button on the left, with the container design margins set to 20px on the right.
If you know where the WPBakery code is to add the css to the page, please let me know. I will keep investigating on my end before giving you access to take a look.
Just noting that I have disabled the Templatera plugin on my site, because I don’t use it and it slows the site down quite a bit in my experience.
Hmm it looks like a bad interaction with the ‘Merge + Minify + Refresh’ plugin I use. I will try to see if I can find the root cause.
If you have information about the WPBakery security changes you mentioned, I am interested. Sorry for taking so much of your time.
I was able to solve the problem by adding the following to the ‘Merge + Minify + Refresh’ exclusion list:
https://SITE/wp-content/plugins/js_composer/assets/css/js_composer.min.cssI now remember I had a similar problem with Elementor some time back.
Oh….this makes perfect sense!
So in the last WPBakery update because of new ThemeForest rules any CSS added by WPBakery is loaded using the WordPress wp_inline_style function – https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_add_inline_style
Now, this function only works by inserting CSS after the defined css file which in this case would be the js_composer.min.css file so if this file doesn’t exist WordPress can’t insert the style onto the page.
Thanks for pointing this out as it will save a lot of headache in the future if other customers are using these scripts.
In general though if your site is setup with http/2 protocol (most sites are since https is pretty much required these days) combining/merging assets can actually make the site render slower because of how http/2 loads assets it can potentially be faster to have them separate. So just something to keep in mind if you did want to do some test in that regards
- AJ
Currently the issue is presenting a series of problems, which is why the following legend is received when entering the administrator
The site has technical problems. See if instructions have arrived at the email tray of the site administrator.
If the contact form 7 is deactivated, it becomes accessible
If another form is installed, for example, wpforms can not be accessed
If you deactivate the theme Total 4.8.5 you can access it and you can work with contact form 7 and wpforms
Hi,
This is AJ the theme author.
Unfortunately there isn’t any known issues with Total 4.8.5 and Contact Form 7 or WPForms. We are using Contact Form 7 on our live demos and I’ve just tested locally as well with both plugins (I can only test with WPForms Lite since I don’t have a copy of the premium version). So the issue seems to be on your site only and I will need a bit more info to assist you.
Can you let me know what errors are showing up in your server error logs? If you are getting the error notice from WordPress “The site has technical problems.” it means there is a PHP error somewhere on the site which would be saved in your server error logs or you can enable WP_Debug to see it on the front end: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/enabling-wp-debug/
Once we know what errors are showing up I will be able to help.
- AJ
Hello, Can you tell me if there is a direct upgrade path for a site running Total theme Version: 3.3.2 with “WPBakery Visual Composer” Version 4.9.2 (from circa 2016 I think) or would I need to perform more than one incremental upgrade? Thanks in advance for your reply.
Hi,
No matter what theme you use you always perform a “direct upgrade”. You can have a look at the changelog, but that may be a bit crazy since there has been so many changes – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/changelog/ – perhaps you’d want to look at the bigger warning notices such as the one from 4.0.
Now, your theme version doesn’t have built-in updates so the best way to set that up is via the Envato Market plugin – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/update-theme/ (option 2) – which would require access to the account used to purchase the theme (you can purchase your own license the theme is 40% off right now if you wanted).
I am releasing Total 4.9 today though so you may want to wait for this update to be live and going straight to it.
My main recommendation when doing an update like this from such an older version is to de-activate all plugins and your child theme (if using one), update WordPress and then perform the theme update. Once the theme update is successful update any plugins that need updating and activate them 1 by 1 and last re-enable your child theme. This should help prevent possible issues or if there are issues it’s easier to know what caused them.
- AJ
Thanks for your prompt reply. I have one more question: the “WPBakery Visual Composer” v4.9.2 plugin is in a plugin folder called “js_composer”—will that get upgraded by the Envato Market plugin once I purchase a license, or will I need to update/reinstall that separately? I tried using the latest version of “Visual Composer” from the WordPress plugin repository, but that doesn’t seem to work… Thanks Again.
Hi,
So there may be some confusion here. The plugin included with Total is actually this one – https://codecanyon.net/item/visual-composer-page-builder-for-wordpress/242431
Originally it was named Visual Composer but the company (for sketchy reasons I imagine) decided to rename the plugin to WPBakery and then release a new very different plugin named Visual Composer for free. This created a huge confusion a couple years ago when it took place and apparently still does.
In terms of updates, yes the plugin is updated with the theme. You will see a notice as described in the docs to update the bundled plugins after updating the theme: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/update-plugins/
- AJ
Thanks for clarifying that for me. That all makes sense.
That was easy. Site is all updated without hassle. Thanks for the great support!
Sorry, one more question: before the update, I was able to find the “Total” custom CSS applied to the site (there were two different places with custom CSS) but now I only seem to be able to edit the “regular” wordpress custom CSS. The “Total” custom CSS is still output to the site, but there’s nowhere to edit it. The first block (which I can edit) has the id: wp-custom-css the one I need to edit, but no longer can has id: wpex-css – I remember updating that block before the upgrade, but can’t seem to find it now. Maybe I’m just looking in the wrong place. Thank You Again.
Awesome!
If you’ve updated to the latest version make sure you install and activate the Total Theme Core plugin as noted on the changelog: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/changelog/
As the Custom CSS panel has been moved here, once active you can access it under Theme Panel > Custom CSS.
If you still have issues please let me know!
- AJ
Yes, I noticed the Total Theme Core plugin. I assume it’s active, since the site is working, even though it doesn’t have the usual “deactivate” link under it… The theme required plugin manager installed and activated it I think.
The problem is that these places:
Theme Panel -> Custom CSS or
Appearance -> Customize -> Additional CSS
Display the exact same code. Originally, one of them had a different set of styles—and as I say, both sets are output on the front end, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to edit the “wpex-css” set.
Just to clarify: this is what I have right before the closing head tag on each page:
<style type=”text/css” id=”wp-custom-css”>
/* bunch of css I can edit using the two areas in wp-admin /
</style> <noscript><style type=”text/css”> .wpb_animate_when_almost_visible { opacity: 1; }</style></noscript> <style type=”text/css” data-type=”wpex-css” id=”wpex-css”>
/ bunch of CSS I can't find anywhere */
</style>
I even searched the database for classnames that are in that css and can’t find it! It’s a complete mystery to me where that’s even coming from.
Gah!! I figured it out. That css I couldn’t find is all the CSS generated by the customizer. But the stuff I wanted to change was not appearing in the customizer (the fields were empty)—once I made a change, and then made another change, the change I was trying to make appeared. I guess the old version let you edit the generated CSS, and the new version doesn’t.
Oh,
Sorry for any confusion…You know what? There was a small bug a long time ago when switching to the new WordPress inline CSS function (which allows for custom CSS in the Customizer). I updated the Total Custom CSS panel to migrate your CSS over to where WordPress stores the CSS so that both functions would hold your CSS and you can edit in either place.
There was 1 version of the theme that was live for literally like 30 minutes hour and it had a bug where your Customizer options were saving their CSS output into this custom CSS field. I think you were either an unlucky customer that downloaded at this time or maybe there is a live demo of mine with some broken sample data (if you imported a demo can you let me know which so I can check the code and make sure it’s fine – thanks!).
If you want. I don’t mind logging into your site admin just to verify everything is working as it should. Just let me know if you want me to do that! It does sound like it is now though.

Thanks AJ. Yeah, I think it’s all set now. It appears that everything that had been done in the customizer got reset to defaults after the upgrade, apparently except for manual edits to the generated css, fortunately it seems like there wasn’t actually much that had been done there. I inherited the maintenance on this site, so I have literally no idea what the original developer did. That’s always a bit messy, but all’s well that ends well.
One thing to keep in mind is that all Customizer settings are saved in the database based on the theme name (folder name on the server) so in this case that would be “Total” now if you switch to a child theme or rename the total theme on the server, this name will change so the Customizer settings will be “reset” (unless you switch back to the parent theme).
It’s possible the theme had a different name on the server which caused the issue in which case you could always rename it back and export/import the settings. It’s also possible if you recently switched to a child theme that you would have to also move your customizer settings.
Just a heads up. And this can always be done via Theme Panel > Import/Export (simply copy the settings in memory to import later whenever switching to a child theme or renaming your child theme).
- AJ
Hmm, the theme name is the same. I don’t really understand what happened, and I do now see other things in the customizer that weren’t reset. I’m guessing that the original developer modified the generated CSS directly somehow. This site doesn’t use as child theme (which I almost always do for sites I build) and it’s a bit of a dog’s breakfast under the hood I guess, but I was able to get everything done that the client wanted, so I think I’m all set for now. Thanks again.
Hi! I am using UberMenu plugin but not sure if that is where I go to fix/change my mobile navigation issue… Basically I have the top bar used for a login/contact menu, then use the header for the logo and main menu. Its great except in mobile where the hamburger goes UNDER the logo. I am trying to find how to make the hamburger to to the right – so logo left, hamburger right. Now its stacked and takes up a lot of room because of this… Do you know if this something I can do in the Total theme or is it an Ubermenu setting/issue? URL – Vology.com… Thank you!
Hi there,
Definitely remember your username and site, nice to hear you again, I hope you are doing well.
Regarding the mobile menu there are a few issues here. First you have some custom CSS on your site tweaking the location of the mobile menu: https://cl.ly/2af4f0
If you remove your edits and then you add a little extra CSS to set the toggle to a fixed width you can position it absolutely. The proble is because of how UberMenu works if you position the toggle absolutely when you click on it the dropdown items will be positioned absolutely as well so the header can’t “expand” when you click on the toggle. And if you “float” the menu to the right instead of using absolute position it would look a bit weird.
You’ll want to ask UberMenu for some advice in terms of better positioning their menu on mobile since they know more about their plugin maybe there is a quicker fix.
My recommendation would be to use UberMenu on desktop and the Total mobile menu on mobile which should work by default. But I’m seeing some edits on the site that may be breaking this function which is probably why you have it hidden by default. If you want I can log in via FTP and see how things are setup and we can get the Total mobile menu working correctly and hide UberMenu on mobile. Let me know if you wanted to do this.
- AJ
Just to verify, you could make the menu look like this in mobile:
https://www.vology.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/End.jpg
and keep the desktop one looking like it does now? I can kind of see what you’re saying but I am not great w coding things so if you can log in and do it that would be great… Let me know how to send you login info Thanks!
No worries, I hope you had an awesome time! It’s always good to let the brain rest for a bit
Yes, I can get it looking like the screenshot, but the way I was suggesting to do this was to use the Total mobile menu for mobile devices instead of the UberMenu one which has 3 different styles to choose from (sidebar, toggle, full-screen) – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/mobile-menu-styles/
For the actual button it would look like 3 bars by default, but it’s possible with a little code in a child theme to add the word “Menu next to it”. Although personally I don’t think it’s needed, anyone using the internet on their phones is generally caught up with design trends to know the hamburger icon means menu.
Either way, if you wanted you can go a head and submit a private ticket and request it be assigned to me.

I am trying to show related content for my custom post type in the template I built for them. I first tried to just have the “Related Content” switch to ON when placing the “Post Content” module but nothing was showing. Same when I try to use that custom query “related=1&posts_per_page=4” in a blog module, it is just not working. Why? What is the simplest way to display related content for my CPT?
Hi,
This is AJ the theme author.
So the “Post Content” module is only used for the Dynamic Template is this what you’ve setup? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGYuBjqkj8Q
I tested locally and the related items are showing up for me. However, by default this option pulls the related items from the standard posts (the blog). To be honest I wasn’t thinking when adding those extra options for (author/related) that they would be used for custom post types. So I’ll need to update things to add a new file in the theme for related items when it’s a custom post type. I’ll do that now for the upcoming update.
Now in terms of using a module and “related=1” this works by grabbing items from the same taxonomy as the current post. It can work for built-in post types because the main taxonomy is known. For custom post types you need to add a little code to your site to define what the main taxonomy will be using the “wpex_get_post_type_cat_tax” filter.
Example: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/snippets/custom-post-type-main-taxonomy/
Otherwise when using related=1 it should still show items, but it will only display the most recent from the defined post type they won’t be “related” in any other way.
If you are not seeing anything, that’s a bit weird. I may need to log in to see what’s going on.
In terms of the “easiest” way, currently it would be to create the dynamic template and insert either the Post Types Grid or Post Types Carousel module and just set the Query to the same post type as your custom post type.
I”m planning an update later today. I’ll see if I can add in the new file for related posts for Custom Post Types so you can enable it via my Post Types Unlimited plugin right in the settings – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/adding-custom-post-types/
As well as add a fix for the Post Content module so if it’s not a standard post that it pulls it’s own file for the related items.
- AJ
Hi.
So I just finished making some changes for upcoming Total 4.9. I made a little video showing you how I updated the integration with my Post Types Unlimited plugin so you can define the taxonomy to be used for related items and also enable related by default without making a dynamic template – https://cl.ly/f7f447
I have also fixed the “Post Content” module so it grabs a new file at partials/cpt/cpt-single-related.php for related items on custom post types instead of the blog file which won’t work correctly.
Thank you so much for bringing this issue to my attention!
I hope to release the update tonight.
- AJ
So yes I have setup a dynamic template. This is where I tried to use the “post content” module and activate the “Related content” switch. It works for regular posts. It doesn’t for custom ones (custom taxonomy or not).
It’s real nice if you can have this “post content” module works for CPT in your next update!
I understand that the “related=1” query works for regular posts only. When you say you need to add that code “wpex_get_post_type_cat_tax” to your site, where exactly? In CPT UI there is a setting that allows you to define what is the main taxonomy (which I set to my main regular taxonomy). I feel it’s doing the same thing you described with your snippet?
I did try to use a regular blog module and set the query to the same post type and it works but it shows also the post that I was just seeing. I want to avoid that.
Maybe in the custom query there is a way to exclude the current post?
I look forward to use your Post Types Unlimited but so far I didn’t really see any reason to switch as it just does exactly the same?
Thx AJ
Hi Fabien,
- Yes. I updated the theme so not only can you add Related and Author Box to custom post types via my Post Types Unlimited plugin but I also fixed the “Post Content” module as well so that the social share and the related posts work correctly when used on Custom Post Types.
Thank you so much for letting me know of those issues.
- Oh you are correct it should do the same thing as the option to define the main query in CPTUI, however, I hadn’t coded related posts for custom post types so this option will only be used for breadcrumbs and for the category in the “meta”.
Now I updated things for the upcoming Total version so that the Main taxonomy setting will be used for related posts like I showed in this video: https://cl.ly/f7f447 – but I’ve only updated it for my Post Types Unlimited plugin.
The reason I created my own Post Types Unlimited plugin is because the Custom Post Types UI plugin is coded very poorly in my opinion so adding settings for the theme is somewhat complex and not very efficient. Because of how my Post Types Unlimited plugin works it’s much more optimized and less functions/checks are needed for the Total theme so it’s a lot more optimized and faster. I would recommend switching if you possible and doesn’t take too long.
- Oh, you are correct the query won’t automatically exclude the current post. You can add a snippet to your site though to exclude the current post from any Total module query. Example: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/snippets/exclude-current-post-vcex-query/

Hello AJ,
We have “Touch Navigation” enabled on our website but it does not seem to be working. We have tested on a Samsung S9 and Iphone XS, both devices updated and have updated browsers.
Hi,
Sorry I’m not sure what you mean by “Touch Navigation”. Can you please explain? Thanks!
- AJ
Sure. The theme comes with LayerSlider WP.
There is an option in LayerSlider WP > Slider > Slider Settings > Slide Show > “Touch Navigation”. It is supposed to enable gesture-based navigation so you can swipe back and forth between different slides.
The feature is activated but is not working on our site.
Hello,
Hoping to get an update on this please.
Hi,
Sorry for the delay as I was pushing out a big update for the theme. I haven’t been able to recreate the issue locally. Any chance you can export your slider and send it over so I can try with your exact settings? Or submit a private ticket so I can log in and export it and then test locally (to not mess with your site) – https://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/
Thanks!

Are there any build-in support for multiple authors (co-authors) on same blog post in this theme? That lets me do the following:
1. Lets me add more than one author to the same blog post.
2. Displays author boxes for all authors on the blog post.
Hi,
Unfortunately this isn’t something built-into the theme because WordPress by default only supports 1 author per post. In order to add support for multiple authors you would need to change the core functionality of WordPress which isn’t theme territory (that’s something that needs to be done via a plugin). In fact it wouldn’t even be allowed for authors of ThemeForest to add such functionality into a theme.
Have you tried looking for a plugin that does this?
- AJ
I’ve found other plugins that can do something like this. However, I’d prefer not to use a third party plugin for it, and I’d also like to have the feature where the author link is linked to the staff item.
Hi,
Unfortunately this isn’t something that I can add to the theme. If you don’ want to use a third party plugin you could always copy the code from the plugin into your child theme, but then you will be missing out on updates it’s not recommended.
Now…If you have code to simply allow you to create multiple authors (doesn’t do anything else but let you assign them on the backend) I can help with integration with the plugin via a child theme to display the multiple authors on the front-end and connect them with the staff item.

I have bought the theme last week. And The visual composer / WP Bakery workede perfectly. Now it doesn’t. Not anywhere on the site. I updated wordpress today to the latest version. Can you help?
Hi,
This is Aj the theme developer. First of all, thank you for your purchase!
Updating WordPress shouldn’t cause any issues with the page builder (it’s been tested with the latest version of WP), do you know if you made any other changes? Maybe installing a new plugin which caused a conflict? I have a guide here for troubleshooting issues with the page builder if you want to check it out: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/visual-composer-issues/
Oh, if you updated WordPress from a very old version I would recommend trying first to clear your browser cache or testing in another browser to see if it’s simply a cache related issue.
If you aren’t able to figure out what changed recently on the server that’s causing the builder to break you can always submit a private ticket with logins so my support staff can have a look: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/support/

Hi AJ –
How are you doing?
I need to add code to the header portion of the home page of my site running total. How do I do that?
I’m running a child theme but the editor only has a styles.css, functions.php, and a readme. Could you tell me how to access that <head> section?
thank you, J
Hi,
I’m doing very well thank you. I hope you are as well.
So to add content to the header what you want to do is make use of an action hook. These are basically functions that run in specific places of the theme and there is one in the <head> so you can write a function in your child theme functions.php file that adds anything you want into it. More info here: https://wpexplorer-themes.com/total/docs/action-hooks/
Here is an example of the code you need:
add_action( 'wp_head', function() {
if ( ! is_front_page() ) {
return; // code only needed on the homepage
} ?>
YOUR HEAD CODE HERE
<?php } );
This would go in the child theme functions.php file. So as you can see you are running an “action” (which is your inline function) on the wp_head hook which is a hook that is located in all themes in the header tag – https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Action_Reference/wp_head
Let me know if you have any issues or questions.
- AJ
ps: And total actually has hooks pretty much everywhere so you can dump code anywhere (top bar, header, title, footer, before/after content, etc)
Thank you AJ. That’s good to know about the hooks! This worked.
Can I use this theme to build a directory website? Do you have a demo of a directory website built with it?
Hi,
You can but it’s not a “directory” specific theme so ideally you would use the theme in combination with a directory plugin otherwise you may want to check out our list of Directory WordPress Themes which are built specifically for that purpose so they include custom post types, taxonomies and search functions for that specifically.

Hello AJ – hope you’re well? I am using the testimonial grid to show only a single testimonial post, but can’t figure out how to use the Advanced Query to do that? Please can you tell me how to query specific testimonials? Thank you Pete
Hi Pete,
Yes I am doing very well thank you. I hope you are also. I’m just working on finishing up Total 4.9 and checking everything before making it live later today.
So to use the Advanced Query to query a specific post you would use the post__in argument – https://codex.wordpress.org/Class_Reference/WP_Query#Post_.26_Page_Parameters
Example: https://cl.ly/3415f4
But to make things easier for management you could create a testimonial category named “Featured” so you can easily remove and put it a new testimonial if you want to change it from time to time.
- AJ
ps: Thank you for the wonderful rating and 5 stat
Thanks very much AJ – I have that query working now, but I have another problem. I can’t change the following custom fields for testimonials:
wpex_testimonial_author wpex_testimonial_company
My client is cloning testimonials to add more and then changing the content – the content is changing fine but the custom fields revert to the previous version as soon as the testimonial is updated?
Strike that! Found the settings/metabox which overrides the custom fields! Thanks/Sorry!
Oh yes, the metabox will take priority
